Finding the Perfect Fit

The Latin word Veritas is defined as “truth.” In Roman mythology, Veritas was the god-dess of truth, a daughter of Saturn and the mother of Virtue. Veritas is also the name given to the Roman virtue of truthfulness, which was considered one of the many virtues any good Roman should have possessed. “Veritas” is included in many university mottos as well, including Yale University’s Lux et Veritas (Light and Truth). Veritas is also the motto of Harvard University, and the Dominican Order of the Roman Catholic Church. The BMHS motto is “justice, truth, honor” and the case can be made that all pursuits, if they are valid, must first be rooted in truth. We, as a school community, certainly strive to achieve that goal.

As you will see in the following pages of this issue of Veritas, our students’ academic success is un-

deniable. During the course of pursuing their academic goals, the students here at Bishop Montgomery learn so many things from their teachers, their classroom in-struction, the peers who share their class-room communities, and their guidance counselors. How well they master the skills and the information imparted to them during the course of their education here at Bishop Montgomery determines what doors will be open to them in the future. As you will see, amazing doors are open to our students as a result of their hard work and their accomplishments! We are immensely proud of them.

With Gratitude,

Rosemary LibbonPrincipal

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

BISHOP MONTGOMERY HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Friends of Bishop Montgomery,

Our students’ academic education is something we obviously take very, very seriously, as it is crucial to their devel-opment as thinking human beings who will contribute to the many communi-ties in which they will find themselves. Even more critical, however, is how they learn to live and love, how they learn to put their faith into action — to be about doing and not just about speaking — to know how to pray, but also how to live their prayers through commitment to so-cial justice — to have the courage to walk

Our goal and continued prayer, then, is that our students will remember not only those academic lessons they have been taught so well here at Bishop Montgom-ery over the course of their four years, but

There is no doubt that our faculty and staff, so able academically, do so much more than teach academic content. They witness to living lives that are meaningful and rooted in Gospel values. There is no doubt that you, our many friends, support us in this work, not only financially, but through your own witness to Gospel val-ues and through prayer. We count you as

in Jesus’ shoes. These lessons do not come from books, but from learning how to live by accepting God’s grace.

members of our community and part-ners in our efforts to encourage our stu-dents in this — that just as they excel in everything — in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in their love — that they also excel in the grace of living.

“Our goal and continued prayer, then, is that our students will remember... the lessons about how to live a life that is a witness to the message of Jesus Christ.”

that they will remember the lessons about how to live a life that is a witness to the message of Jesus Christ. We pray that they will remember that they are each children of God, made in His image, with a duty and a mission to continue to develop their gifts and use them for good. We pray that they remember that a Christian life is about becoming the largest, most inclu-sive, most Christ-like person they each can be. We pray that they will continue to be-come even more remarkable as they grow in age and grace.

COVER STORY

Finding the Perfect Fit for College

A significant milestone in every Bishop Montgomery

student’s life, high school graduation celebrates the

culmination of years of hard work as seniors prepare

for a new chapter in their lives. While graduation also

marks a new beginning for these young adults, it also

signals an end-- an end to the long process of finding a college that fits

their wants and needs.

FALL/WINTER 2014-2015 • 7

• On average, 95% of BMHS students are accepted to 4-year schools.

College Matriculation Study2005-2014

In the last 10 years, 2,689 students have graduated from Bishop Montgomery High School.

meeting with each member of the class,” she explains. “They are also

fielding questions from juniors who are diving into their college

searches and helping them begin to navigate the college application

process.” Fortunately, for the underclassmen, “the new set-up provides

our ninth and tenth graders with more individualized attention because

they have a counselor specifically dedicated to serving their needs.”

It is no secret that students enter Bishop Montgomery with the

knowledge—and the expectation-- that college is four years away.

Bishop’s college matriculation rate over the past decade proves this fact

(see sidebar). With an average matriculation of 99%, BMHS prides

itself on not “if” it sends students to college, but “where” it sends them.

So, what exactly is the process today that students go through to

find the right school? When, in their high school career, do students

begin this process? How do they know if they are on the right path? The

answers to these, and many other questions, are just a short walk from

any locker or classroom on campus: in Bishop’s Guidance Center.

Today, students and parents begin thinking about college at an earlier

age. In the past, traditional preparation for college began in the junior

and senior year. Now, it is happening before high school even begins.

As the school’s Director of 9th Grade Admissions and Curriculum

Studies Coordinator, one of Casey Dunn’s responsibilities is to assist

incoming freshmen with course selections. In the past, many of the

questions she fielded centered on which classes would satisfy Bishop’s

graduation requirements; now, more of the questions center on which

classes specific colleges will accept. “More and more incoming freshmen

have their minds set on going to a certain college,” says Dunn. “Part of

my job is to respect those aspirations, but I also want them to choose

classes that will offer as many options as possible and give them the best

chance at being successful after Bishop Montgomery.”

With the goal of providing even more college-prep assistance to the

underclassmen, Bishop’s Guidance Office was restructured before the

2014-15 school year began. Prior to this academic year, three counselors

were each assigned a section of the alphabet by student last name (e.g.,

A-G) and were responsible for all students in that range, regardless of

grade. However, beginning this year, veteran counselors Celeste Adams

and Doug Mitchell now spend their time working with the juniors and

seniors, while new Bishop guidance counselor Angelica Diaz works

with the freshmen and sophomores. Continuing her role as an advisor

and advocate for the incoming freshmen, Dunn works closely with Diaz

to ensure the new class is assimilating and adapting well to Bishop’s

college-prep program.

Having Diaz on board has been a blessing not only for Dunn, Adams,

and Mitchell, but, more importantly, for the freshmen and sophomores.

In addition to her role as freshmen and sophomore guidance counselor,

Diaz coordinates the college tour program, the scholarships that are

available to the seniors, and the off-campus summer programs that both

local and national colleges offer to students of all grade levels. It is in her

work with the ninth and tenth graders, however, where she sees having

the greatest impact. “I have the opportunity to build a relationship with

the younger students and I enjoy that,” she explains. “I think it makes a

big difference to the students.”As Dunn explains, the change in structure has turned out to be wildly

successful for all involved: “From the start of school through Novem-

ber, the Guidance Office is swamped with getting the seniors ready for

college applications, writing their letters of recommendation, and

In September, Diaz visits classrooms so that she can see every freshman

and sophomore on campus. For the ninth graders, it is an opportunity to

be introduced to the Guidance Office and its counselors. Diaz seizes the

Perhaps the most important tool the

juniors receive is something that they

must use – the College App Project. For

the last five years, all juniors enrolled

in a regular or honors English course

spend the first three weeks of the spring

semester working solely on the College

App Project. (Juniors taking Advanced

Placement Language & Composition

complete this project after the AP test

later in the semester.) The project is a

collaboration between the Guidance

Office and the English Department,

with the end result being a practical college portfolio. “Having the English

Department require the juniors to complete the College App Project has

been a huge help in exposing the students to some of the tools at their dis-

posal,” explains Adams.

By junior year, many students have begun to assemble their lists of

prospective colleges, and Adams and Mitchell believe this initiative puts

them a little ahead of the game. It does not mean, however, that their school

search is complete. “We let them formulate their lists,” Mitchell says, “but

once they have their lists, sometimes we have to give them a little reality

check.” Mitchell admits, though, that those reality checks have subsided

in recent years. “Students are getting more sophisticated and realistic in

making their lists of target schools,” he says, “and we have gotten better at

helping the students make better lists.” For most of Bishop’s current sophomores, their visits with counselors

during the freshman year were limited to group meetings. Although group

meetings are still on her agenda – to discuss standardized testing and

preparation for the junior year – Diaz is able to spend more time on details

and in meetings with individual students. “I am able to go into more detail

with the tenth graders about the SAT Challenge, the PSAT, and the ACT

Practice Test, while getting them ready

for junior year,” she says. Another one

of her priorities with the sophomores is

focusing on their academics and chal-

lenging them to take higher-level cours-

es, something Dunn also stresses with

the incoming ninth graders as well.

“I challenge the students to challenge

themselves all the time,” says Diaz.

Chris Nunez ’17 is one of many sopho-

mores who has taken advantage of the

Guidance Office’s new structure. Last

year, he saw his counselor several times

in group settings, but only once individ-

ually. So far this year, Nunez says that

he has met with Diaz at least five times,

and the tools she has provided him have

been invaluable. “[Ms. Diaz] has helped

me help myself get better in all aspects

of my academics,” says Nunez. “I feel

more connected to the Guidance Office

than I did last year.”

To help juniors identify potential schools and continue exploring college

options, Adams and Mitchell have a myriad of tools at their disposal. Some

tools they strongly encourage the students to use; others they require. At

the start of their second semester, all juniors receive a comprehensive

College Newsletter from the Guidance Office. The newsletter gives each ju-

nior, and their parents, detailed infor-

mation about the college essay, letters

of recommendation, UC and Cal State

guidelines, testing, scholarship and fi-

nancial aid resources, a timeline of im-

portant dates, and much more. They are

also encouraged to make college campus

visits on their own, sign up for one of the

college tour events organized by Diaz,

and visit the College Board website.

Junior year is an important time in the college preparation process, not

only for the students, but for the Guidance Office as well. Just as Dunn and

Diaz encourage the underclassmen to challenge themselves academically,

Adams and Mitchell stress it even more with the juniors, most of whom

have completed the requirements for both Cal State and UC schools by the

end of their sixth semester of high school. But, for Adams and Mitchell, that

is not enough. “Colleges are looking for rigor in a student’s course load,”

Adams explains. “We want to see the students challenge themselves to be

better; to see what they can do; and, to be competitive in the classes they

are taking.” Mitchell, the senior member of the office and the Head Guid-

ance Counselor, takes it one step further: “When the students get to their

senior year, we want them to have options,” he explains. “Just meeting the

basic Cal State and UC requirements is fine, but it will limit student’s op-

tions of where they can apply to college.”

The person at the forefront of the junior College App Project is English

Department Chairperson Teresa McDorman. McDorman has spent several

years tweaking and streamlining the project so that, by the time it is com-

plete, each student has a document they can refer back to as seniors. And

it is no coincidence that her department and the Guidance Office share the

same philosophy for the entire college preparation process. “The primary

reason we started the project is to show the students that there are many

options for college,” explains McDorman. “The students start to see that

there are more schools out there …[for] where they are a potential match.”

opportunity to speak to freshmen about improving their study skills,

taking advantage of the resources that are available to them through the

Guidance Office, and encouraging them to speak to their teachers. Hav-

ing Diaz in her current role has already garnered results the Guidance Of-

fice was seeking with the new structure. “I have seen Ms. Diaz about six

or seven times already this year,” says freshman Megan Lau ’18. “She has

encouraged me to talk to my teachers and she has helped me improve my

study habits. I am a better student because of her.”

Our Counselors

Mrs. Dunn has been at Bishop Montgomery for almost ten years. As Bishop’s Studies Co-ordinator, she is responsible for all student scheduling. She also serves as the 9th grade Admissions Director and the International Academic Counselor for current 9th and 10th graders. She is a graduate of Palmdale High School. She received her B.A. in Sociology from San Diego State, and her Master’s in Educational Counseling and PPS Cre-dential from the University of La Verne.

Ms. Diaz is in her first year at Bishop Mont-gomery, but has been a counselor since 2011 and has been working in education since 2007. This year, Ms. Diaz is responsible for working with all of the 9th and 10th grade students. She is a graduate of Inglewood City Honors High School. She received her B.A. in both Peace & Conflict Studies and Spanish Language & Lit-

erature from UC Berkeley. She holds a Master’s in Counseling and a PPS Credential in School Counseling from the University of San Diego.

Prior to moving into counseling, Ms. Adams, a 1994 BMHS alumna, taught 9th and 10th grade English for five years. She has also served as an assistant volleyball coach and currently coaches the boys’ soccer goalkeepers. As a Bishop student, Ms. Adams was an outstand-ing student-athlete. She was Sportswoman of the Year in 1994, won CIF titles in volleyball and soccer and was CIF Goalkeeper of the Year in 1993-94. As a counselor, she is responsible for guiding the juniors and seniors with last names Li-Z. She received her B.A. in English from Loyola Marymount in 1998 and also holds a Master’s Degree in Counseling with a PPS Credential from LMU.

Mr. Mitchell is in his 16th year in the counsel-ing office and 26th year at Bishop Montgom-ery. Prior to becoming the Head Academic Counselor, he taught in the social studies de-partment. In addition to being the counselor for juniors and seniors with last names A – Le, he is in his 26th season as the head boys’ basketball coach. One of the most successful

coaches in the state, he has led the Knights to 16 league titles, five CIF-SS titles, and three State titles. Mr. Mitchell is a graduate of South Torrance High School and received his B.A. in History and Political Science from California State, Dominguez Hills in 1988. He completed his secondary teaching credential at Mount St. Mary’s College and he is currently en-rolled in the Master’s program in Educational Administration at National University.

Broken up into three distinct weeks, the project requires the juniors to

have hands-on access to Naviance software, the Common App, and the

University of California (UC) writing prompts, among other tools. In

Week I, Adams, Mitchell, and Diaz work with the juniors as a group, focus-

ing on Naviance-- college and career readiness software that provides stu-

dents with college planning and career assessment tools. After the Naviance

overview, the juniors spend time “playing” with the software. Among the

resources available on Naviance are graphs that show the acceptance his-

tory of BMHS students to specific colleges based on GPA’s and test scores.

“These graphs are visual aids that really open the eyes of many students,”

explains Mitchell. “They see where they stand in terms of their grades, test

scores, and what specific colleges are accepting.”

During Week II of the project, students research schools, which is where

the Guidance Office’s philosophy of expanding their options comes in to

play. Each junior is required to conduct research on schools in the UC and

Cal State systems, as well as private California schools and out-of-state

schools. By the time portfolios are complete, each junior has a list of 15

prospective schools. “The second week [of the project] is really fun,” says

McDorman. “[The students] get into researching schools and see all of the

possibilities of where they might be a match.” To McDorman and the coun-

selors, the school research portion is always an eye-opener for the students.

After uploading grades and test scores to Naviance, along with their own

research of schools, students can hone in on possible colleges that might

have not originally been on their radar, as well as come to the realization

that they may not be a fit for their dream schools. Despite the potential

mix of emotions, the process proves extremely valuable in the long run:

“College admissions today are very competitive, to say the least. Some stu-

dents experience a reality check when they discover that they might not be

able to gain admission to all of their top college choices,” says McDorman.

The final week of the College App Project is spent on completing a mock

college application. The students complete the Common Application in-

formation which includes penning a full personal essay; writing on a UC

prompt; and, conducting scholarship research. After the three weeks are

finished, the juniors not only have a reference tool they can use heading

into senior year, but some of their anxieties are minimized. “One of the best

parts of… the project is that some of the questions the juniors… have always

get answered,” explains McDorman. “The feedback we get from the juniors

is so positive about the entire project experience.”

One student who has used the College App Project to her advantage is

senior Danielle Julifs ’15. When she arrived at Bishop as a freshman, her

parents encouraged her to be open to all of the possibilities for college and

told her to “look everywhere,” she says. Guided by this philosophy, and

supported by the Guidance Office, Julifs did extensive research on out-of-

state schools to find the right place to study either pharmacy or occupa-

tional therapy. “Danielle wanted something different,” says Mitchell. “She

did her research and put together a realistic list of schools.” That list, which

includes Boston University, the University of Illinois, Purdue University,

the University of Washington, and James Madison University, pinpoints

colleges where she feels she will be a good fit. “The counselors encouraged

me to try new things and really supported my desires to go to school out-

side of California,” explains Julifs.

Page 10: Veritas fall winter 2014 15

however, she was invited on a Washington, D.C. college trip sponsored by

the Asomugha College Tour for Scholars (a program sponsored by former

Bishop Montgomery student and NFL great Nnamdi Asomugha), but she

was hesitant to go. “She was not even considering going to school out-of-

state,” says Mitchell. Encouraged by Adams to take the trip, Franco ended

up falling in love with Georgetown University, where she is currently

finishing up her degree in International Politics. “The trip forced her to ex-

pand her horizons,” says Adams. “I think she will admit that keeping her

options for college open changed her life.” For Adams and Mitchell, one of their main challenges is pushing students

to look past the branding of a school. Often, students are caught up in

attending a college that has an impressive name. “Perception is important

to the students,” says Adams. “The tough reality for many of them is that

their dream school may not be a suitable option; it is really all about finding

the right fit.” Adams and Mitchell admit that finding the right fit is easier

said than done, but if the students use the tools at their disposal – doing

the research, visiting campuses – then, more often than not, they will be

happy with their decisions. When asked to recall a student who illustrates

this, Adams and Mitchell almost simultaneously replied with the name of

former student Daisy Franco.

Each year, the senior class at Bishop Montgomery is filled with students

who are ready for college because they found the right fit. In fact, the coun-

selors believe that most, if not all, the students fall into this category. “The

real success stories are the students who work really hard in their studies,

challenge themselves to look at all possibilities, and get into their number

one choice for college,” says Mitchell. The Class of 2015, like many classes

before them, is littered with stories of students who are ready for college

and who have found the right fit. There is no doubt that they will carry on

the tradition of Bishop Montgomery alumni who are successful not only

after high school, but in the many years that follow.

Finding the right fit for college is really what the Guidance Office stresses

to the students as they begin their senior year. With the junior portfolio

complete and some of the research done, both Adams and Mitchell spend

much of their time meeting with the seniors individually to discuss where

they will be submitting applications. “We never tell a student not to apply

to a school,” says Mitchell, “but we stress to them to be realistic about their

applications and to find a school where they will flourish for all four years.”

Finding the Perfect Fit for College

While preparing for college applications, Franco, from Bishop’s Class of

2011, planned on staying very close to home in Los Angeles. As a junior,

Donor of Bishop Montgomery

($100 - $499)

Why I Give“Our daughter, Sarah ‘04, had a wonderful experience at Bishop Montgomery High School. During her time at Bishop, she grew spiritually, academically and athletically. We believe in the mission and philosophy of BMHS. We want to do what we can to help other students and families have the same opportunity to receive the same high quality, Catholic education that our daughter received at Bishop. As Luke reminds us, God calls on those that are able to help others. The BMHS Queen of Angels Fund is an excellent way for us to give back and to help others that might need a little assistance. We strongly encourage those that are able to consider BMHS when determining their charitable contributions.” Pat and Bob Kidwell, Past Parents

Mission StatementThe mission of Bishop Montgomery High School is to provide quality Catholic education primarily to college bound students of varied academic abilities from the South Bay area.

We serve the needs of the Church and the larger community by providing intellectually mature persons who have learned to integrate world knowledge with Catholic beliefs and values.

Our mission is accomplished through the cooperative efforts of parents, students, and staff by providing a rigorous curriculum and a positive discipline program that challenges all students to reach their potential.

The mission is realized in a community that nourishes the faith life of the parents, students, and staff through prayer, worship, and service to others.

The school does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, racial or ethnic origin in administration or its education policies, admission policies, scholarships and loan program, and athletic or other school administered

programs.

Why I Give“Due in large part to the quality education I received, which started at Bishop Montgomery, I have been fortunate in my career, so I want to say ‘Thank you!’ I also hope to inspire others to do the same, and therefore, give back, whether it be time or money, or both! I want the students of Bishop Montgomery to believe in themselves, and it has to start from someone who does!” Martin von Kanel ‘80, Current Parent, Boys’ Golf Coach

Why I Give“I want students to have an educational experience as enriching as I had (and even more enriching, if possible). The reasons I donate to particular institutions, such as Knight Pride, PBS and St. Jude Childrens’ hospital is because I believe in the missions of all of them and I consider it an honor to be in a position to give back.” James Pesutich ‘86

Why I Give“[We] received a quality education at Bishop Montgomery and, as Ms. Libbon has stated, ‘alums should always consider Bishop Montgomery their home.’ Donations insure that current and future students not only receive a quality education, but will know that Bishop Montgomery will

welcome them home long after graduation, as it has for us.”

Songleaders Kaelyn Jefferson ‘17 and Miya Mimura ‘16 have been invited to represent Team USA in an international dance competition in Tokyo, Japan in the summer of 2015. The team consists of “hand picked” dancers from various dance teams across the country; all competitors have to be invited to compete. The selection committee travels to competitions across the United States and selects dancers to invite based on their performances.

June Richards (far right), a local business owner and 7-Eleven franchisee who operates the Redondo Beach store on Prospect Avenue, presented a $500 Project A-Game grant to BMHS before the Knights’ football game against Cantwell. Development department members Amy Traxler and Andy Marafino, along with ASB Presi-dent Kira Iwai ‘15, accepted the donation on behalf of the school.

It is a rare feat when a high school is home to a student who receives a perfect score on the SAT or the ACT. Of the millions

of students who take those exams each year, a microscopic per-centage earn perfect scores. Now, Bishop Montgomery is home to two “perfect” students.

Senior Earns Perfect ACT Score

FALL/WINTER 2014-2015 • 21

When asked his reaction when he learned of his score, Kim was, at first, hesitant that it was even true. “My score did not come out until a few weeks after everyone else I knew received their scores, so I was anxious,” Kim says. “When I saw my score, I wondered if I was seeing it correctly.”

With plans to double major in business and computer science in college, Kim has applied to Cornell, Harvard, the University of Pennsylvania, NYU, UCLA, UCSD, Cal Berkeley, UC Irvine, Cal Tech, and Stanford.

Not only is Kim an outstanding student, he is actively involved in many organizations at school. This year, he founded Bishop’s Model UN Club. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Knightlife staff.

Last year, we chronicled the accomplishment of now-BMHS senior Samantha Nishimura ‘15, who earned a perfect score of 2400 on her SAT. Now, Nishimura is joined in elite company by her classmate, David Kim ‘15, who scored a perfect 36 compos-ite score on the ACT he took in September. It was his first time taking the test.

Concordia Club and Faculty Make Dresses for a Cause

While working with her family on the second 100 dresses, Galdamez approached Fabbri and Concordia Club about getting involved. With 80 dresses already made, Galdamez asked Concordia members to help make the final twenty. It was an instant hit. “The [Concordia] girls really embraced the project,” says Galdamez. In February, Concordia received a visit from Jan Cooper, a southern California representative for Dress a Girl Around the World, who took the dresses for delivery.

Through the Dress a Girl Around the World campaign, Hope 4 Women International provides dresses for at-risk women and girls. Galdamez, who has been teaching at BMHS for over 25 years, became involved in the organization through her late sister, Olga Martinez. Prior to Olga’s death in 2014, Galdamez helped her sister and other members of her family make 100 dresses for the campaign. The dresses were shipped only a few days before Olga’s passing. It was an experience that had a tremendous impact on Galdamez. “After my sister’s death, we decided as a family to carry on her legacy by continuing to make dresses for the cause,” says Galdamez. Along with her mother, an aunt, and her sister in Houston, Galdamez was ready to make another 100 dresses with the help of the students in Concordia.

Each year, Bishop Montgomery’s Concordia Club, under the leadership of veteran Spanish teacher Laura Fabbri, dedicates its time serving the school

community, as well as those in Los Angeles and around the world. Among their projects, they make fleece blankets for children in local hospitals, raise money for leukemia patients, and gather supplies for those serving in the military. Recently, a new project grabbed their attention thanks to another longtime teacher, Dulcie Galdamez (pictured above, center).

Work has begun on making a third set of 100 dresses and this time, Concordia

Club, Fabbri, and Galdamez have been joined by other members of the faculty and the greater BMHS community. “The Concordia girls have either supplied or gathered all the materials for the third set of dresses,” explains Galdamez. “We have finished about 50 dresses with a goal of completing this set by Thanksgiving.”

If you would you like to help Concordia send dresses to girls around the world, you can sponsor the project by donating nice, clean cotton fabric and/or thread. Concordia Club also welcomes anyone who would like to stop by campus after school to help. Contact Laura Fabbri at [email protected].

For more information about the project, visit www.dressagirlaroundtheworld.com.

One of the things Galdamez likes most about the project is that the dresses get hand-delivered to those in need, not just shipped off and forgotten. Cooper as-sured Galdamez of this, telling her that her most recent placement of 700 dresses was taken to Uganda by volunteers traveling there to dig wells in an impoverished area of the region.

A Great Fall Season to Start the Year
