Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of the San Clemente community,

God of all peoples and nations,

Accompany us on our Lenten journey.

Through the life and mission of your Son you give us the gift of

mercy.

May we learn to walk your way of love and compassion with all

people.

In a special way, we keep in mind the children, women and men

around the world who are most vulnerable to extreme poverty

and injustice.

Bless our prayers, our fasting and our Lenten gifts to Project

Compassion.

Through these actions, May our hearts be open to receive your grace.

As we work towards a just future for all your creation.

We ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen

St Dominic – Pray for us.

Lent began this week and the San Clemente community gathered on Wednesday morning for the Ash Wednesday litur-

gy. This important event gave all at San Clemente the opportunity to pause and reflect on the significance of Lent in our

year and in our lives. The season of lent is a time of reflection and preparation for the most significant of Christian cele-

brations – Easter. Through prayer and involvement in our liturgy, students and staff committed themselves to contem-

plation of the things in our lives that we can abstain from or give up that will help to enrich our lives and the lives of the

people around us. Furthermore, as a Catholic community we are called to be people of compassion. These are chal-

lenges for human beings, but they are certainly challenges worth taking up. Over/...

As we enter the second half of Term One, our students are focussing their energies on assessment tasks and items in

each of their subjects. There is not a more important time for students to be working closely with their teachers and en-

suring their attendance at each class is time well spent in the pursuit of personal best. Learning growth is the goal for

every student. This growth can be in small increments or in giant leaps but either can only be achieved by a dedication to

productive use of class time and ensuring that the expertise and support of teachers is not only sought but acted upon.

An interim report will go out to parents and carers in the latter part of this term and an opportunity to meet with teach-

ers at Parent/Student/Teacher meetings will follow closely. Parents and carers are encouraged to use both the report

and the meetings as an opportunity to engage fully with their child’s learning.

As is always the case, staff at San Clemente go above and beyond in terms of providing support to our student learners.

Various lunchtime and after school tutorials and homework groups are made available to students to assist in their learn-

ing. I encourage parents and carers to seek out these opportunities with their children so that learning can be enriched

and improved, particularly in subjects where there may be struggles.

Parents and carers will have received a letter this week regarding adjustments to the expectations regarding uniform at

San Clemente. Some of the matters addressed in the letter were raised last year and expectations in relation to shoes as

part of the uniform have been added this year. Without going into the detail of the letter again, families are asked to

read the information with their sons and daughters and insist that the expectations set out in it are met. Students not

adhering to uniform regulations of any kind will be given appropriate consequences.

Finally, Project Compassion forms an important part of our Lenten journey each year. Monies raised through various

fundraising activities at school during Lent go to Project Compassion. This Lent is our giving through school and parishes

is themed “Give Lent 100%”. This simply means 100% of our capacity to give either in monetary or if not then by doing all

that we can in word and action so that we may empower communities with hope and help those in great need to shape a

better future for themselves, their families and their communities. Lives change when we all give 100%.

With best wishes to all in our San Clemente community.

God Bless

Assistant Principal - Wellbeing

Despite the fact that our San Clemente community prides itself on our strong relationships, this theme remains a constant

work in progress. Many of the issues I deal with are relationship based and a common word I hear is “bullying”. This term

itself can be mis-represented. The definition of bullying is – “Bullying is an ongoing misuse of power in relationships

through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve

an individual or a group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it

can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert).”

Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Many of the

issues we deal with at SCM are not necessarily bullying by definition but regardless of this, where harm is occurring – ac-

tion must be taken. The Ninth National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is being held on Friday, 15th March

2016. This annual day is Australia's key anti-bullying event for schools, and encourages all students to 'take a stand togeth-

er' against bullying and violence in schools, the classroom and beyond. In my experience the only way to stamp out bully-

ing is to BE ACTIVE and face it head on. At SCM, the Wellbeing team make any instance of bullying a priority. As a school

and as an organisation bullying flies directly in the face of the very values and beliefs we all endeavour to display as a Cath-

olic community. Tolerance, compassion, kindness and care for others should be at the fore-front of all our interactions.

Yet, bullying remains an unfortunate part of growing up.

SCM is committed to stamping out bullying and I encourage all families to investigate ways of stopping this behaviour. One

simple idea is to follow our 5 Ways of wellbeing:

· CONNECT with their peers, talk to teachers and parents and report all instances of harassment or bullying.

· BE ACTIVE not passive.

· TAKE NOTICE of your peers, be brave as a bystander, step in and report.

· KEEP LEARNING new ways to be resilient to negative behaviours.

· GIVE of yourself to others, assist those who need help.

Let’s be a community who STAND UP to Bullying. In our next Year meetings and PosED sessions we will be addressing all

students about the issue of bullying at SCM and have made a special request to hold a discussion about bullying. This will

also include the completion of an online bullying survey where students will be given the opportunity to speak out about

any bullying in our community. We are hoping to push the message that bullying at SCM will NOT be tolerated, that those

who are or witness bullying MUST STAND UP and report.

San Clemente says - NO TO BULLYING!!

Note to Parents/Carers

Student Verification Reports sent home at the start of school need to be reviewed and any corrections should

be noted and returned to school as soon as possible. If the information is correct the form must still be re-

turned. Similarly the Code of Conduct paperwork is now overdue also.

Assistant Principal - Teaching and Learning

Research highlights the importance of learning being visible and students being actively engaged in the learning process. Teachers communicate to students the learning intention of every lesson at San Clemente and how stu-dents can measure their learning.

A very important component of the learning process is the communication between a teacher and student about what students can do if they determine that they have not successfully learned the intention of a lesson. To take more responsibility for their own learning, research shows that learners need to know: What they are going to learn How they will know when they have succeeded Why they are learning it

Teachers at San Clemente are committed to supporting all students to

be successful learners.

Together, we keep learning…

NAPLAN Practice Test

On Thursday March 28, Year 7 and Year 9 students will participate in an online practice NAPLAN test. The test is a 45 mi-

nute omnibus test with questions from domains of Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in consul-

tation with the school principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be

signed. More details will be sent to parents later in the term.

If you do not wish your child to participate in the NAPLAN Practice Test please contact Mrs Emma Tierney.

What are Learning Intentions? A Learning Intention describes what students should know, understand or be able to do by the end of the lesson. Learning intentions identify new learning and focus on knowledge, under-standing and transferrable skills. The Learning Intention of a lesson is visible on the white board at the commencement of every lesson and teachers come back to the learning intention throughout the lesson.

What are Success Criteria? Success Criteria are the measures used to determine whether and how well a learner has met the learning intention (how the learning will be assessed). The criteria a student can use to assess how successful their learning has been is also visible on the white board at the commencement of every lesson.

Why Are Success Criteria Important? Improve understanding

Help learners to focus on the task

Encourage independent learning

Enable accurate feedback

Learning Intention: We will learn to identi-

fy reliable content on the world wide web

Success Criteria:

Define the word reliable

Research a variety of different websites

Solve an information problem using differ-

ent websites

Develop a set of criteria to judge if different

websites and their content are reliable

Assessment

All students should now have received a copy of San Clemente’s Assessment Guidelines and an Assessment Schedule for

2019. As mentioned in the Week 2 edition of Veritas, Mentor teachers went through a presentation with students on as-

sessment procedures and expectations. San Clemente’s Assessment Policy was reviewed in 2018 and there are new proce-

dures in place for 2019. Whilst students have been informed of these changes in procedure and have taken home a booklet

outlining the Assessment Guidelines that govern assessment at San Clemente, with both formative and summative assess-

ment now underway I will highlight some pertinent procedures relating to Summative Assessment (Assessment Tasks).

Please note that the points below are taken from the 2019 Assessment Guidelines booklet. Assessment Schedules have also

been uploaded to the school websitewww.mayfieldsanc.catholic.edu.au

Support Services San Clemente has many avenues of academic support for students including: Class teacher, Teaching and Learning Coordi-nator, School Librarian, the Feldt Centre and Homework Hub. Students are strongly encouraged to utilise the support the staff are so willing to give students. Formal Notification Students will receive formal notification for each task at least two weeks prior to the submission date by their class teach-

ers. At this time class teachers will outline the requirements of the task and guide students’ approach to completing the

task.

Year 10 Students

On Monday morning, Year 10 attended a drama performance by Brainstorm Productions, titled, “Wired”. It was

educational theatre that addressed student mental health and emotional wellbeing, including the physiology,

causes and effects of stress, anxiety and depression. It focused on two adolescents with extremes of behav-

iour, metabolism, hormones, goals and perspectives who were spiralling out of control in different directions -

one into STRESS and OVERLOAD, the other into DEPRESSION. When their lives collide, they are forced to change

course and the characters play out an alternative path towards greater resilience and mental wellbeing. One in

seven young Australians experience a mental health condition. Mental health is a topic that needs to be dis-

cussed and not hidden. I encourage all parents of Year 10 to start the conversation with your child. Make the

time to connect with your child, be interested in their lives, support and encourage them. Teenage years are

not only difficult for parents but for teenagers as well, especially in today’s world. Websites such as Beyond

Blue, Headspace and Reach Out provide valuable information on mental health topics, please check them out.

It’s time we all joined the discussion on mental health.

Next Wednesday 13th March, Year 10 will be involved in a Study Skills and Careers Information day at school.

The day is designed to better equip Year 10 with the tools and skills needed to successfully achieve at school

and post school. The day will feature presentations from Elevate Education, TAFE NSW, Hunter Trade School,

representatives from Newcastle University and ex San Clemente students. Students are not required to bring

their devices/books on this day, just a positive attitude and writing equipment. All Year 10 are to be in full aca-

demic uniform.

A few parents have contacted me regarding important dates for Year 10. I know it is early in the year but if you

are planning a family holiday please avoid the following dates.

Semester One Examinations – Week 8 Term 2 (Monday 17th June – Friday 21st June)

Year 10 Retreat – Week 10 Term 2 (Tuesday 2nd July – Thursday 4th July)

Semester Two Examinations – Week 4 Term 4 (Monday 4th November-Friday 8th November)

Year 10 Graduation – Week 8 Term 4 (Wednesday 4th December)

Also, please be aware that St Francis Xavier’s College Hamilton (SFX) will mail out enrolment packages to all San

Clemente students in Year 10 at the end of Term 1.

A reminder to Year 10 parents, if you have any concerns at all please contact me at school, 40147300 or at the

Year 9 Students

The importance of belonging cannot be underestimated. From a wellbeing perspective there is probably no more im-

portant ingredient to leading a connected, happy and fulfilling life. Many studies have shown that the down turn in gen-

eral wellbeing at ages 18-25 and 45-55 are primarily due to either leaving a school community or the disruption to the

family balance, both occurrences are direct results of the removal of a feeling of “belonging”. For our children the feeling

of belonging is absolutely key to their wellbeing. All children need to feel that their world is a safe place where people will

care about them, where their needs for support, respect and friendship will be met, and where they will be able to get

help to work out any problems. When these needs are met children develop a sense of belonging. A sense of belonging

has been found to help protect children against mental health problems and improve their learning. Children who feel

that they belong are happier, more relaxed and have fewer behavioural problems than others. They are also more moti-

vated and more successful learners. So what can we do to help our students feel more connected?

At school we:

Encourage the small, daily interactions between staff and students, the greetings and general conversations.

Provide multiple opportunities to contribute to school life – academic, spiritual, sporting, House comps, cultural,

ministry, IT, debating, etc., etc.

Provide a multi layered approach to pastoral care – Mentors, classroom teachers, Year Coordinators, Middle Man-

agement, Executive.

Recognise our Charism, history, diversity and traditions.

At home:

Listen to your child, asking them about their day and talking through any concerns they may have. Take time to

play with your kids without distractions – show them that you value spending time with them giving plenty of en-

couragement that values effort over success.

Allow opportunity to engage in wider family support and/or community – sport, arts, music, cultural etc.

My focus this term is to ensure that all Year 9 students feel a strong sense of connection to San Clemente. Parents please

do not hesitate to contact myself if you have any questions or concerns about your child.

I would like to congratulate those students who are wearing the school uniform with pride. A letter was sent home earlier

this week outlining the clear expectations in terms of uniform. Parents I am seeking your support in ensuring that your

child is dressed appropriately for school each and every day.

Take care, till next fortnight.

Kate Tolfree, Year 9 Coordinator (Wellbeing)

Volunteers are needed for the canteen

We are very short on volunteers for canteen this year, if anyone can help that would be appre-ciated. We need you to come between 9am and 12:30 pm for food prep and service with sup-port from a Fulltime Canteen Supervisor.

Weekly, monthly is great or even once per term, if you can come more often, that would be fan-tastic. Come meet our lovely students and staff. Please call the office on 4014 7300.

Kind regards, Gillian and Toni, Canteen Supervisors

Year 8 News

Term 1 has now shifted into another gear for Year 8 with focus now turning from assessment notifications, to the comple-tion and submission of a variety of formal tasks. Students have a large number of impending due dates relating to a pleth-ora of subjects, some of which are included below;

Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD)

Robotics

Food Technology

Science

Visual Arts

French

Geography

Religious Studies

Mathematics

With a large number of tasks due over the following weeks I would encourage ALL students to familiarise themselves with San Clemente’s 2019 Assessment Policy, see Assistant Principal’s overview of the Policy in this edition of Veritas.

In the event of misadventure, a student’s first point of contact would be there classroom teacher for initial discussion. Should additional information be needed parents/carers are encouraged to discuss their child’s options with the relevant subjects Teaching and Learning Coordinator (TLC).

In addition to the importance of a students’ academic health, I would like to outline the role both SLEEP and EXERCISE has on an individual’s overall well-being. During a recent Learn 2 Learn (L2L) day held on site Year 8 were made fully aware of just how imperative these 2 things are if a student is to reach their full academic potential.

The benefits of both SLEEP and EXERCISE are well documented, and have been thoroughly backed up with proven scien-tific evidence – in short they work!

Some of these benefits include;

Sleep:

Sleep helps reduce stress Sleep can improve your memory Sleep can lower your blood pressure Sleep helps your body to fight back Sleep can help you maintain your weight Sleep puts you in a better mood.

Exercise:

Exercise helps to make you feel happier Exercise helps with weight loss Exercise is great for your muscles and bones Exercise increases energy levels Exercise reduces the risk of developing chronic disease Exercise assists with a person’s skin health Exercise helps with overall brain health and memory

In this year of connectedness, I would again like to encourage parents/carers to contact me should you wish to discuss the pastoral needs of your child. Also, the importance of out of school experiences that you share with your children can never be underestimated. These are things that I firmly believe are worth sharing and serve to strengthen the professional rela-tionships between staff and students.

Lastly, a final thought;

“One day you will just be a memory to some people. Do your best to be a good one.”

Year 7 Students

In 2019, our theme is to CONNECT. At San Clemente, we pride ourselves on community with the number one indicator of

Mental Wellbeing being positive relationships. As I connect with the cohort in class and during break times, it is fantastic

to see Year 7 students greeting their peers, showing gratitude to their teachers and giving their all in every opportunity

that comes their way.

The Lunchtime House Competitions have commenced for Term 1 with Dodgeball for Years 7/8 playing each Wednesday.

All students are encouraged to participate or to spectate. Music will be played for students to enjoy while they support

their House.

I mentioned to all staff recently that we will continue to maintain high standards and set the bar high for this group – in

their dealings with each other, effort in the classroom and uniform. I look forward to leading Year 7 students toward

achieving their best and displaying excellence in all aspects of school life.

Shout-outs: Congratulations to all swimmers who will compete at the Diocesan Carnival next week.

A reminder to all parents/ carers, if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s wellbeing, please don’t hesi-

tate in contacting me on 4014 7300 or at [email protected]

Our first experiences at San Clemente

Week 6 into San Clemente and we have already done so much. Firstly, Camp at Point Wolstoncroft. It was an amazing chance to connect with our classmates and learn so many new skills. We participated in multiple team building activities, which helped us build trust and relationships with our peers. Next was the Learn 2 Learn day at San Clemente. The aim of this day was to help students on how to manage high school education methods. We learnt how to do assignments, how to handle heavy workloads, manage stress and many other helpful tips for high school. Last week, Year 7 participated in the Active and Connected days which were highly suc-cessful. It was an afternoon at the beach with the other members of our house. We played games and were being active whilst still having fun with our peers. Early in 2019, San Clemente have also held the announcement of the SRT. The Student Representative Teams are a chance for students to take notice of what is going on in their school. So far, San Clemente has been a great experience for all Year 7 students.

Friday afternoon. The comp saw eight submissions from club members across year groups which are on display in the Library for eve-

ryone to see and vote for their favourite. The winning poster will be announced in the next Veritas and also used for club promotion.

Quiz and sushi fest - There will be a quiz and sushi fest in Week 11. Our President Shea and Vice President Sarah are creating the

quiz and there will be prizes for quiz winners. Members can order sushi hand rolls for $3.50 each, notes will be going home next week

(12 March) and due back with payment by Friday 29 March.

Term 2

1000 paper cranes - The club will embark on a mega origami project where we will attempt to fold 1000 paper cranes. Hopefully we

will reach 1000 and they will be on display at our annual Sight and Sound exhibition.

Lip sync battle - We will be hosting a lip sync battle at the end of Term 2 where members will be able to ‘sing’ songs from anime theme

songs, J-Pop or K-Pop. The sign-up sheet will be available from the beginning of Term 2. There will be guest judges and prizes.

A reminder to parents that the drop off zone immediately in front of

St Dominic’s on Havelock St is not for use by San Clemente parents. It

SPORT NEWS

Last Tuesday 26th February we held our San Clemente Swimming Carnival for 2019. This was a fantastic day that gave

both staff and students a chance to connect, be active, and enjoy the day together as a school community. The participa-

tion throughout the day was outstanding, while there were some very ‘interesting’ outfits on show! A big congratulations

goes to Aquino, who won the Swimming Carnival on 616 points! As well as this, a very big congratulations goes to our age

champions, as well as the swimmers who qualified for the Maitland – Newcastle Diocesan Swimming Championships at

Lambton Pool on March 12th. All students who have qualified for DIO Swimming have been informed and need to return

their permission notes ASAP. A summary of our swimming carnival can be found below:

Project Compassion is Caritas

Australia's annual Lenten fund-

raising and awareness-raising

appeal. Millions of Australians

come together in solidarity with

the world's poor to help end pov-

erty, promote justice and uphold

dignity.

This year Project Compassion

invites us into a partnership with

Caritas Australia. We are called

to give hope 100% to those living

in a variety of circumstances, we

are called to transform compas-

sion into action, to make a differ-

ence in the world.

First week of Lent

Thandolwayo, a 12-year-old girl in Zimbabwe, would walk seven kilo-metres each day to collect contaminated water for her family. She then went to school exhausted from hours fetching and carrying water. It looked like she would never realise her hope of finishing her education and becoming a nurse, until a Caritas Australia supported project cre-ated access to clean water helping Thandolwayo to stay at school and achieve a future full of hope.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 to provide clean water

and a future full of hope for vulnerable communities in Zimbabwe.

Second week of Lent

Tati lives in the remote forest of Indonesia with her husband and children. Earning an income working in a local rubber plantation, her Dayak culture has relied on the rainforest for generations. How-ever, due to land clearing, many indigenous people are losing their land and livelihoods. Through eco-tourism training supported by Caritas Australia, Tati can now afford to send her children to school. With new hope and commitment Tati aspires to a future free from poverty for her family.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help lift com-munities in Indonesia out of poverty, and give them hope to protect our common home.
