Dear Parents/Carers

We are all enjoying the long awaited glorious wet weather. We have often found that with wet weather, comes restless children. Having said that, the children, as a whole, are behaving beautifully. Their behaviour at our opening mass was impeccable. Perhaps children do long for quiet times, quiet play and peaceful experiences. While getting out with friends and running until they drop in exhaustion is very important for their development in many ways, so are quiet times. Activities such as reading a book with or to parents at night (even up to Year 6), playing board games for short but increasing periods of time, sitting quietly to be creative in their own way through visual arts for example, are opportunities for peacefulness and contact with parents. These are opportunities for questions they have been thinking about that need to be asked in moments of trust and provide a bit of peace away from screens, noise and their “rat race”. Their sleep will be of a better quality too. Term 4 is busy though. So quiet times are few and far between. Please check your newsletter for announcements and dates. This is the best way to keep up with all that is happening.

VIP Open Morning

Please don’t forget that we have our VIP (Very Important Persons) event tomorrow morning, October 19. This will begin with a BBQ breakfast for all of our visitors from 8.00am and then continue with all classrooms being open for visits. Please note all children will attend their normal classes during this time, so all of our special guests are invited to wander through the classrooms at their leisure. Our morning will conclude with a liturgy in the courtyard (weather permitting) from approximately 9.40am – the bell will ring to indicate when we all need to gather for the liturgy. Thank you to Mr Gerrard and all of the teachers for their hard work and dedication in bringing this open morning to fruition.

in the bus zone – Hawtree Street

Just a reminder about the bus zone in Hawtree Street at the front of our school. There should be no parents parking in this zone before and after school. All children should be picked up and dropped off in Brier St. If you would like to enter the school, please park on the other side of the streets and walk into the school. You are quite welcome to do this. Most parents should join the end of the line in Brier St and move forward for their child to be put into your car.

Revitalisation Project Update

While our building refurbishments have gone out to tender, we are waiting for contractors to bid on the work to be done. We soon hope to be able to announce the commencement date for the work to be completed. The teachers and children will have a beautiful new looking school to enjoy when they return in 2018. We are so lucky to be able to complete this work with the support, once again, from BCE.

Enrolments for 2018

Just a reminder to let your friends know of the great work we do here at St Brendan’s. While we are a small school, we easily compare with our local schools in all areas of school life. Our children are just as well -mannered as you will find in other schools, our teachers just as caring and professional as other schools and our resources are equal to or better than other schools in some cases. Our real difference is our community spirit that is very palpable to those who visit us. Please let your friends know of the great little school called St Brendan’s, tucked away at Moorooka, and ask them to consider joining our community of learners. Are your children currently in Prep to Year 5 and you have plans for your family to leave St Brendan’s at the end of the year? Our expected enrolment numbers for 2018 are lower than first predicted and as a result, it is essential that if you and your family are not returning to St Brendan’s in 2018, that you inform the office immediately. Thank you in advance for your support of this request. Finally, I’d like to thank the community for their well-wishes and prayers at this time for my family. Your thoughts and prayers are welcomed and very much appreciated. I pray that you all have a terrific week. May God’s blessings be with you and your families today and always! Take care and God bless always In Faith and Love Nicole Cole Principal

7.00am-9.00am

2.00pm-4.00pm

October, the month of the Rosary Our Lady is at God’s side listening to our prayers. Through the rosary we take

our lives to her asking for God’s intervention. Please remember to pray the Hail Mary with your children. It is a comfort to know and say this prayer when times are tough.

Mission Month At the end of this month we celebrate Sock-tober. The Missionary arm of the Catholic Church, Catholic

Mission asks all to wear crazy socks and raise money for the poor. This year the appeal is focusing on the poorest people of Uganda. Throughout the month the children in yr 5/6 will hold different activities for a silver coin donation for Catholic mission and St Vincent de Paul, Moorooka. I hope you will allow your child to participate and support the 5/6s in this leadership role.

Parish School Mass – I’d like to thank Fr Dan, the children from St Brendan’s and St Pius X and all the parents and

parishioners who warmly welcomed the children who lead the mass last Saturday. The parishioners were really appreciative of their presence, reading and singing. It was also great to see so many stay after mass to meet each other. Being involved in community is so important for children in many ways.

VIP Open Morning – 19th 7:45 – 10:00am To all special family members. Please come and join us for a light

breakfast before school to see the school grounds. At 8:40 we’ll gather for a quick greeting and a song from our choir. Later, you’re welcome to walk through the rooms and see what the classes are doing in their regular day. A closing prayer will be held at 9:40 to conclude the morning. We hope to see you there.

Volunteers’ Morning Tea Please keep an eye out for this morning tea if you have helped around the school and in

the classrooms this year. We’d love to say thank you.

Have a wonderful week everyone.

Brendan

any sweets or finger food would be welcome. We would also welcome any helpers from

10:00am to help set up.

STAR STUDENT &

CLASSROOM NEWS

PREP: Star Student - Henrik Schoenemann In Prep we have been learning about the features of places. We made a collage of a park and included things like monkey bars, a slide, tunnels and bridges. In Science we have started investigating the Seasons. We know that we are in Spring at the moment. The Preps are very excited about going to Swimming lessons this Term!

YEAR 1: Star Student - Sam Duckworth Yr 1 has been learning about how important Mary, the mother of Jesus is. They have started learning the Hail Mary. In English, Yr 1 is having lots of fun reading poems. They read a funny one called 'A Fu Fu Bird'. Telling the time has been one of the Maths areas that Yr 1 has been focusing on. They are learning about o'clock and half past. In HaSS, Yr 1 is learning about places and spaces and how to read and follow maps. They are also finding out about celebrations around the world. In Science, Yr 1 is investigating light and sound. They are very excited about the Street Science show which is coming to St Brendan's on Friday.

YEAR 2: Star Student - William Payne We have been looking at push/pull forces in Science and Technologies and thinking about how we can design a push/pull toy. We have also been investigating the text structures of narrative texts in English through fairytales, folktales and fractured fairytales. We have been learning to measuring volume using uniform, informal units such as blocks, water and sand in Maths. In Religion, we have consolidated our understanding of the four steps to reconciliation through the parable of “The Lost Son and the Forgiving Father”. We are continuing to explore the relationships we have with different places and the different scales of these connections in Geography.

YEAR 3/4: Star Student - Winnie Acot The Southern Stars are exploring the forces around us. We can't see friction or gravity but it holds us to the ground. Time rules our life and we are expanding our knowledge of the rules of time. In History we have explored the effect on traditional Aboriginal life by Maccassans and the Europeans. Each Sacrament has its own symbols and signs. They are also linked back to the life of Jesus in the Gospels.

YEAR 5/6: Star Student - Eric Kaniki We welcome everyone back to the final term and while this is the last for Year 6, there is still much to be done in a short amount of time – and it’s getting shorter. In Religion, we are studying the Bible and making connections between passages that show Jesus as the Messiah finishing with the famous dialogue between Jesus and Peter with Jesus asking him, “Who do you say I am?” In English/Technology, we are creating toys that move and solving design problems. While making these we are making notes, creating a procedure to construct them and creating an ad to sell them. Watch out for our toy sale later in the term. In Maths, we’re consolidating our mental calculation ability and solving harder problems with operations. We are also creating games of chance. In Science, we are learning about different substances and their qualities. While in HaSS we are studying businesses and how they work to form an economy.
