It is not yet deep s u m m e r , but the t h under can be heard

already. The t h u n d e r of anger of the people along the

roads and mines, the thunder of b u l lets in the townships

and h iding at work.

Again we show our anger over o p p r e s s i o n and the exploitation

we feel every day of our life. W h e r e it was thundered rest

in V a a l , t h e i r suffering are the same as ours every where,

the p eople in the Vaal, like all our p e o p l e else— where,

have d e m o n s t r a t e d that they do not w a n t G overnment stooges,

by a b s t a i n i n g from voting for the C o u n c i l , but these are

still e n f o r c e d on us.

Our people are compelled to show the G o v e r n m e n t their dis=

like of this, but the G o v e r n m e n t ' s r e p l y was to send the

A r m y and the P o lice to those w h o t r i e d to peacef u l l y show

their dislikes, to injure them and k i l l e d some.

The B a n t u s t a n and C o m m unity Council L e a d e r s and others of

the G o v e r n m e n t tried to excuse t h e m s e l v e s by saying there

are Agitators..

* They do n o t w a n t to see our p r o b l e m s are real.

* They d e n y that we are struggling.

* The students' demands for a b e t t e r e d u c a t i o n are turned d o w n .

* If B l a c k w o r k e r s in factories c o m p l a i n of low wages and b e t t e r w o r k i n g conditions and the dismissal of workers, the Police are called t h e n t h e y get assaulted and d i s m i s s e d .

* The w o m e n are complaining of t h e h i g h cost of food and the r i s i n g G.S.T. They get a s s a u l t e d and teargas is shot at them.

We are t o l d to vote for dummy leaders, v i o l e n t Bantustan

leaders, r o b b e r s in the new A p a r t h e i d Parliament.

If we r e f u s e and say we want a S o u t h A f r i c a that is free

of surrogation, with equal rights, free of oppression and

ex p l o i t a t i o n , we are arrested, a s s a u l t e d and killed.

* H o w can they call themselves our leaders when theyare sent by their A p a r t h e i d m a s t e r s ?

* H o w can we believe pecple such as h'encrikse and Rajbansi, who say they are going to fight from i nside Parliament, while p e o p l e are dying and t h e y said nothing and did not even try to do something. How long do we still have to wait w h i l e these people do this to us?

* H o w can we trust them, when t h e y say they work for us if they do not listen to us.

* H o w can Tshabalala say it is A p a r t h e i d that has c a u s e d people to suffer, when he keeps on exploiting p e o p l e at his shops and o p p r e s s i n g people? It isle Grange, Mahlatsi, Tshabalala, Rajbansi and H e n d r i k s e and their friends w h o cause the suffering and deaths all over the Country.

T h e U D F believes that we should join and strengthen our

O r g a n i s a t i o n s , Civic Associations, W o r k e r s Associations,

Y o u t h Organisations, Students' as well as Women's Organi=

sations.

* If w e are united, we will fight as one.

* If we are united, we can involve the youth in the struggle.

* U n i t e d w e are strong.

W e h a v e succeeded in some things, m a n y rents have been

reduced, t h e Community Councillors resigned. In Ratanda,

E a s t Rand, the Councillors heard the complaints of the

p e o p l e a n d resigned. The C o l o u r e d s and Indians refused to

v o t e for Apartheid, but this is not sufficient, we want them

t o go out altogether and the d e s s o l u t i o n of the Apartheid

P a r l i a m e n t and Bantustans.

We w a n t a society that is free of any economic exploitation

a nd o p p r e s s i o n where the basic life necessities will be

lo o k e d i n t o equally.3/ .............

But the road a h e a d of us is still long. We must unite,

be one, let us b u i l d our strength at schools, locations

and factories.

Let us proceed f o r ward to freedom.

Power is ours, UDF Unites, Segregation Divides.

D u r i n g the e l e c t i o n of the new Parliament, the Indian and

C o l o u r e d s t u d e n t s boycotted classes in thousands, demon=

s trating their o p p o s i t i o n to apartheid elections. k

T h e D e p a r t m e n t of Education (DET) has as its reply the

c l osing of s c h o o l s and expulsions of students, we see Police £

arresting, f i r i n g tearsmoke and k i l l i n g students. -

B ut the s t u d e n t s k e e p on organising and are strong, even if ;

t h e G o v e r n m e n t r e f u s e s to give t h e m t h e i r rights.

At the m o m e n t t h e r e are more than 160 000 students boycotting

classes. In t h e V a a l at Bophelong, Boipatong, Sebokeng,

Sharp v i l l e and E v a t o n there are 93 000 students boycotting.

In the East R a n d 5 000 in Daveyton, 6 000 in Katlehong,

2 000 in T h o k o z a , 5 000 in Tembisa, 2 000 in Vosloorus,

6 000 in W a i e v i l l e . In Pretoria 2 500 in Mamelodi and

Soshanguve, 6 000 in Saulsville and A tteridgeville, in Alex=

andra 2 000, i n W e l k o m 3 000, in T o m a h o l e 2 000, Queenstown

3 000 and C r a d o c k 7 000. \

M a n y students h a v e been arrested, but the others are fighting j for their r e l e a s e .

T h e students h a v e inside the schools quite a number of

grievances, l i k e corporal punishment, lack of reading books

a n d poor food a n d teachers selling out on students about

anything the s t u d e n t s do.

V A A L RESIDENTS DEMAND L O W E R R E N T S .

Vaal residents call upon the sellouts to r e s i g n from the

D u m m y C o u n c i l .

Our . ?ople in the Vaal Townships of Sebokeng, Boipatong,

E vater and Sharpville have won a g reat b a t t l e against rent

increase r and also succeeded in f o rcing some of the

C o u n c i l l o r s to resign from the D u m m y Council.

It I ad been m o n t h s now that the Vaal R e s i d e n t s have been

c a l ling meetings to come and d i s c u s s the increases in rent.

A* ,e • u r a meeting, they r e s o l v e d not to go to work, and

( • ac the c h i ldren would not go to school since their

request was ignored.

■?.nt to the offices to d e m a n d the a bolishing of the

i n c r e a s e in rent. They also r e q u e s t e d that shops be closed

on this day.

On the 3rd of September, the Vaal R e s i d e n t s went to the

o f f ices to demand the following

* A b o l i s h i n g of the increase in rents.

* That the rent be reduced.

* That Councillors resign their p ositions.

* That all w h o are in prison be r e l e a s e d forthwith.

* That the Police abstain from h a r a s s i n g people burying their dead.

Just like Sharpville twenty years ago, the residents of

Vaal were replied by bullets, t h e y paid h e avily for

_ ^ I u s i n g to pay increased rent, w i t h t h e lives of their

children.

Z. Government claims that there are 31 dead, but the

C ’.nunity -ay the murdor is m u c h more; others sustained

One of the r e s i d e n t s said, Apartheid is the cause of this

bloodshed in the Vaal.

It became clear w h e n this Dummy Council was i m posed on the

people who did not w a n t it.

The Dummy Vaal C o u n c i l was elected by about 9% of the people

In Evaton by about 5%.

The Vaal Civic A s s o c i a t i o n has been fighting for t h e rights

of the people from 1983 since its inception. This Associa=

tion is r e p r e s e n t e d in all the Vaal Wards.

One Vaal r e s ident s a i d : " W e are defeating the incre a s e d rent

while at the same t i m e u n i t i n g the people".

There are other o r g a n i s a t i o n s that are affili a t e s of UDF

in the Vaal, like C O S A S and the Vaal W o m en's Organisation.

The Vaal Civic A s s o c i a t i o n calls upon the r e s i d e n t s to

resist the i n c r e a s e d rents daily, and that they s h o u l d

unite and be one.

The Vaal R e s i d e n t s say t h a t they can not a f f o r d the high

rent because the c o s t of living generally and t r a n s p o r t

goes up and up daily.

People are being d i s c h a r g e d from their e m p l o y m e n t without

reason.

Employment being one of the difficulties facing the

residents.

Let us unite and be one— R e s i d e n t s of the Vaal.
