OBJECTIVE: STUDENTS WILL LEARN WHAT IMPACT BRITISH SETTLERS AND SEE THE IMPACT THEY HAD ON NATIVE AMERICANS

Goal: Students will learn the contributions of different religious groups to American civil laws and social reform

Jamestown, Virginia• Jamestown- (1607) 1st

English city in present day US

• Virginia Company- in charge of Jamestown

– *Goal- make money (find gold like Spanish)

• Disastrous start- settlers died in huge numbers (WHY?)

1)Gentlemen Settlers- they did not know how to live in the wild (kill food, build homes)

2)Looked for gold- not food

3)Disease- town is in a swamp with mosquitoes

• Tobacco- Native American crop popular in Europe

• *Tobacco made Jamestown profitable (Drug trade makes $ too just like gold)

• New settlers- people wanted to move to Jamestown to make money and cheap/free land

• Headright system- free land for new arrivals

• Indentured servant- person to poor to pay for trip, had cost of trip paid in return for 3-5 years labor• *Shortage of people/labor required

incentives for people to move to Americas

• Problems for settlers- as more people came, available land moved farther inland – *Caused clashes with

Indians

• Bacon’s Rebellion- (1676) former indentured servants riot and burn down Jamestown– *Wanted more

protection against Indians from local government

– **Importance- created a need to find a less troublesome, cheap labor source (SLAVES)

• New England- settled by English looking for religious freedom (Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island)

• Puritans- wanted to purify/fix the Church of England (make it less Catholic), treated harshly by King in England

• Pilgrims- Puritans who wanted to separate from the Church of England, sailed on Mayflower and landed on Plymouth (1620)– *Both wanted to create a model

Middle Colonies (New York, Penn.)

• New Netherlands (New York) founded by Dutch as a trading outpost ($), open to all groups of people, traded with Indians (few clashes)– Duke of York- took over New Netherland without a fight for England,

renamed New York

• Pennsylvania- founded by William Penn as a colony for Quakers (Christians who were pacifists, against slavery, and supported Indian rights)

Expansion- more settlers from Europe moved in, worse relations w Na.Am.

*How is Penn. different from New England

• Advertised- in Europe to attract settlers (Germans, Scot-Irish)– *middle colonies had equality, cooperation, and religious tolerance

Beginning of the 16th century, nations of Europe competed for wealth & power through a new economic

system called mercantilism.

• Mercantilism- nation could increase its wealth and power in 2 ways: – By obtaining as much

gold & silver as possible – By establishing a

favorable balance of trade, in which it sold more goods than it bought.

• Navigation Acts- England’s parliament (king) attempt to gain control of colonial trade by passing certain laws.

Many who came to the colonies like Virginia were looking for gold.

Did not find gold. Many died. Future colonists ended up raising tobacco.

In the beginning, Virginia colonists like in the ones in Jamestown died.

Virginia colonists need labor to grow tobacco

Puritans are persecuted in England

Puritans believed in religious freedom
