Being a Nursing Home Resident in Ren Ci for a Day As part of the move towards person-centred care, it is important to understand how we, as staff of Ren Ci, make our residents feel and how they spend their lives when they are staying with us at Ren Ci Nursing Home. The Management led the way in gamely participating in the experiential learning facilitated by Dr Emi Kiyota, an environmental gerontologist. The simulation was so realistic that participants wore patient clothes, underwent oral toileting, put on diapers and played simple ball games as part of the residents’ usual exercise routine. They even stared into space and experienced the various diets. Another group of staff also underwent this experiential learning to better understand how our residents feel. A Night of Appreciation and Celebration This year being Ren Ci’s 20th Anniversary, a joint Volunteers and Staff Appreciation Dinner was held to show recognition and appreciation to all our volunteers and staff on the same night for their dedication and hard work. It was a night of Shanghai splendour on 28 June 2014, where Ren Ci volunteers and staff swarmed Singapore Expo with essence of “Shanghai Triads”, in line with the theme “Shanghai Night” and livened up the atmosphere similar to the famous “Pearl of the Orient” in 1930s.

Six long serving staff were presented with their 10 years and 15 years Long Service Awards for their commitment to deliver service excellence to those we serve and care for. Fifteen deserving volunteers were honoured for their faithful support, care and love shown to our beneficiaries over the last ten years and more of volunteering at Ren Ci. Once again, we applaud the award recipients’ dedication and contribution to Ren Ci! We also wish to thank the organising committee and lucky draw prize sponsors for making our Shanghai-themed D&D a memorable one.

Upcoming 20th Anniversary Events:

August – Family Appreciation Day

September – Charity Gala Dinner (Fundraising)

November – Ren Ci Vegetarian Food Fiesta (Fundraising)

Memorial Dinner in Loving Memory of Madam Goh Lee Hiang Ren Ci Hospital received $351,000 donation from the Goh Lee Hiang Memorial Fund on Vesak Day 2014. A memorial dinner organised by a family member of the late Madam Goh Lee Hiang in commemoration and loving memory of her helped raised the fund for Ren Ci Hospital. Established to aid charitable causes, the Goh Lee Hiang Memorial Fund, stemmed from the affinity with Ren Ci and belief in our corporate mission of “Partnering the community to provide inclusive healthcare for quality and meaningful living”, has donated generously for our fundraising events and even adopted our wards in 2013. Their support has enabled Ren Ci to help and meet the needs of the ageing population and enhance our patient care.

Sparkling Pearlies Dental hygiene came to the fore when about 75 Tzu Chi volunteers descended en masse at Ren Ci Nursing Home, Buangkok on Sunday, 16 February 2014 to peer into the mouths of the 174 residents. Following the dental screening, a follow-up took place on Sunday, 27 April 2014. Residents did teeth scaling, had their bad teeth extracted and a few had dentures fitted. Thanks to Tzu Chi volunteers, our residents are now able to flash bigger and brighter smiles!

Ren Ci Annual Charity Golf 2014

Ren Ci Hospital has successfully raised approximately $628,000 through its annual charity golf tournament held at Sentosa Golf Club on Friday, 23 May 2014. Minister Lim Swee Say was the Guest-of-Honour for the event as well as celebratory dinner.

Attended by 140 golf enthusiasts, the Ren Ci Charity Golf 2014 teed off without a glitch despite the wet weather. Total funds raised increased by 14.3%, as compared to Year 2013 ($550,180). It was encouraging to receive continued support from donors and corporate sponsors like Mitsubishi Electric Asia Pte Ltd, Ho Bee Foundation, JP Nelson Offshore Services Pte Ltd and Daimler South East Asia Pte Ltd. We would also like to thank all the members in the Organising Committee in ensuring the success of our third annual charity golf event.

A Night to Remember

It was a night of colourful splendour based on the celebration theme “An Evening of Bouquets”, at the biennial AIC Intermediate and Long-Term Care (ILTC) Night on Friday, 30 May 2014. Held at the Fairmont ballroom, the night became even more memorable when Ren Ci emerged as the winner for the performance segment.

The team weaved a touching story of a man’s life journey, titled “Life Silhouette” told through shadow play, which won the hearts of the judges and audience. The motivation behind the storyboard?

One of our performing members shared, “We wanted an act that would be meaningful, related to our sector and focused on our patients. It was a challenge to gather for joint practices because we work different shifts, we also had to stretch ourselves to come up with something creative yet cost effective. We were overjoyed when we realised we had won. More importantly, we are so happy that we have been able to share our patients’ life experiences with the audience.”

Ren Ci Passenger Van Sponsored by Loh Tai Min Foundation Mr David Loh Tai Min, a supporter and friend of Ren Ci since 2009, has generously donated a passenger van for Ren Ci’s use. Mr Loh sponsored $77,200 under the Loh Tai Min Foundation, which covers the purchase of the passenger van. Ren Ci can now provide better transportation support for our Day Rehabilitation Care Centre. The sponsored passenger van has been in operation since May 2014.

Mr Loh quoted, “Doing good deeds should come from a willing heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion. Doing good is my greatest source of happiness. Be a cheerful giver.” With this sponsorship, he hopes to lead by example and encourage his friends to advocate meaningful initiatives and give back to the society.

He is also an earnest supporter of other Ren Ci fund-raising activities, such as the Ren Ci Charity Dinner, Vegetarian Food Fiesta, Charity Golf Tournament and Drive for Fund. Thank you, Mr Loh!

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL

Congratulations to our Principal Physiotherapist and Deputy Rehabilitation Manager of Ren Ci Hospital, Lim Kong Beng, on receiving the Healthcare Humanity Award 2014! He took no pay leave for a year and uprooted his family to carry out missionary work in a village at East Timor. One of the burn victims, whom he helped to nurse and rehabilitate, has gone on to get his degree in Indonesia.

What motivated his decision? Kong Beng shared that it was a calling he could not ignore. With a background in geriatrics, Kong Beng’s response to the calling to help the needy came not just in East Timor but another two times, when he stepped out of the acute care sector to help in the intermediate and long-term care sector (ILTC). He brought along his two daughters, aged 1.5 years old and 4.5 years old then, as he believed that education should be about broadening one’s perspectives, and not just academically.

An eye-opening experience Kong Beng had to pick up the local dialects so that he could translate to teach English. Other than creating a model for teaching English in schools, he applied his clinical expertise. He shared that villagers would think that they had been possessed by spirits when they ran a fever. A villager had died in his twenties due to asthma, but was thought to have died from witchcraft.

The children would run around bare-feet and get bitten by roaming pigs. Kong Beng would have to cajole them to seek medical treatment, building an awareness that medicine can help. He would also organise health talks, demonstrating the use of basic amenities, such as toothpaste and soap, which we take for granted.

One of his most vivid memories was of a youth in his twenties who had suffered burns from putting a generator where the fuel was pumping. It exploded and scarred the youth. At that time, a flood had resulted in a collapse of the connecting bridge to medical help. Kong Beng stepped in to manage his burn, helped to rehabilitate him and in the process brought him out of depression. The youth’s family had been shattered when they learnt about their son. For 3 to 4 months, Kong Beng kept at helping the youth recover. Eventually, the youth managed to regain the use of his limb and went on to Indonesia to get his degree.

Lessons learnt Life is fragile. Kong Beng shared that the villagers were very resilient. Rain or shine, they would set up makeshift stalls to sell fruits. When the stalls collapsed, they would set up again and resumed selling. Life goes on, and he hopes to inject this positivity in Ren Ci’s patients that they will be able to maximise their functionality, return home to be with loved ones and lead meaningful lives.

Kong Beng also felt that he is better positioned to understand and relate to foreign domestic helpers’ need for time in adjusting to the environment in urban Singapore.

His takeaway message from this meaningful journey, “Let us live simply so that others can simply live.”

Happy Rehab Day In celebration of Rehab Day, the Rehabilitation Department organised activities aplenty for members of the public, patients and staff at the lobby of Ren Ci Community Hospital on Friday, 9 May 2014.

Based on this year’s Rehab Day theme “Beyond Disability, the Power of Rehab”, there were various activity booths which showcased physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and recreational therapy. Some of the participants got a first-hand experience in navigating through an obstacle course in motorised scooters and wheelchairs. Other activities included art therapy and Rehab Day gifts giveaway. The highlight of the day was the Rehab Challenge! Five teams of staff competed head-to-head in this Amazing Race-style challenge.

Rehab Day ended on a good note, and we wish to reiterate our thanks to our wonderful Rehabilitation Department for helping to enable our patients and residents to continue living meaningfully!

Pet Therapy: Man’s Best Friends as Healers Police dogs visiting our nursing home? That's right! Six adorable canines brought joy on the morning of Friday, 25 April 2014 when residents came out of their blocks to meet man's best friend. The dog handlers were great too, engaging and wheeling the residents around the compound with the residents holding onto the leash of the dog. They shared on the various types of police dogs and entertained numerous questions from our residents.

One of our residents, Mr Teo was thrilled to have a caramel-coloured Labrador leap to his side as a greeting, sharing that he used to keep dogs and cats as pets when he was younger. Another resident asked for one of the dogs to be placed on his lap, happily stroking it. Indeed, pet therapy has been proven to provide psychological benefits. One resident was spotted to be talking when he is usually reticent.

Another pet therapy initiative was by Love Kuching Project (LKP), a community-based rescue volunteer group for cats. Every fourth Saturday of the month, residents of the Nursing Home will be visited by the volunteers and of course, their cats! Most of our residents are delighted to be able to pat, hug and “speak” with the cats, which respond by mewing.

We certainly look forward to more visits by man’s best friends, now our residents’ new friends, which certainly add life and buzz in their lives! This is yet another example of how Ren Ci will continue to work and engage our community to bring meaning to the lives of our nursing home residents.

Working Minds – Resilience Being one of the five pillars of Mental Health, resilience is our ability to cope with stress and bounce back when we are confronted with difficult situations. Ren Ci and Dayspring Corporate Wellness conducted a 3-hour talk on the perspectives of resilience, whereby one can view challenges as opportunities rather than threats, or how it helps us cope with difficult situations and turn them into useful life experiences. We interviewed Ms Summer Ng (Senior Executive Assistant, HR) who shared her thoughts regarding resilience after attending the talk.

What did you learn about resilience from the talk? I learnt that we constantly need to be aware of our feelings and how it affects our mindset towards issues or situations. To build resilience, we can change our mindset from negative to positive by using empowering language.

How do you apply empowering language? Here are 3 scenarios which most of us usually encounter. By applying empowering language, it helps tweak our mindset to make things work:

Disempowering Language: “This is too tough for me to handle.” Empowering Language: “Where do I get support?” (This opens up the mind of finding possibilities to make things work.) – Don’t be afraid to ask for help or support. Sometimes, all you need is a little guidance or motivation.

Disempowering Language: “This task is too big to manage or finish in time.” Empowering Language: “What can I do to meet the deadline?” (With this phrase, it switches the mind to find ways that will meet the target.) – Break down the task into smaller or baby steps, and you may be well on your way to completing the entire task.

Disempowering language: “I want to talk to this person, BUT this person is difficult to get along with.” Empowering language: “How should I approach this person?” (Eliminate the “BUTs” in our language. It stops us in our track to move forward.) – Ask yourself what you can do to make the relationship work, and stay cordial towards him/her.

Have you put what you have learnt at the talk to practice? From this talk, I learnt that we should live in the present moment and focus on the NOW, not the past or future. We accumulate feelings and knowledge as we age, which forms our mindset when facing certain situations. Instead of looking for ways or methods to overcome the difficulty, we should learn to let go of things that are no longer relevant in today’s context. Ask ourselves what serves now. Focus on the moment. Be aware of the thoughts going on. When I face a stressful situation now, I will not let previous experiences cloud my feelings and I will tell myself to approach the matter with a positive outlook.

工作思想 - 韧性 作为心理健康的五大支柱之一,韧性是我们应对压力并从困难中快速恢复的能力。仁慈和 Dayspring Corporate
