From January 2014, Romanians and Bulgarians will be allowed to enter the United Kingdom, live here, work here and claim benefits like all UK citizens. The prospects of allowing another influx of immigrants into the United Kingdom does not sit well with the majority of Brits. The question is “How will the new influx of people from these two countries affect the United Kingdom ? “

Romanians, more so than Bulgarians, seem to have always been frowned upon by British people in general. Perceptions of Gypsies, thieves and other unwanted associations are part of the current vocabulary being used to describe them. But why is there a fear amongst the Brits to allow these people in. Surely they must have known when they signed up to become a member of the EU that this would someday be inevitable.

It is difficult at this stage to determine the exact number of Romanians and Bulgarians that will be entering the United Kingdom. All indications are that it may be in the thousands as airline ticket and bus travel tickets from these countries to the United Kingdom is fully booked over the next few months. Some airlines have even doubled their standard ticket prices and still have no seats available. Although on new years day a few ministers went to one of the UK's local airport to personally oversee the arrival of the mass of Romanians and Bulgarians, only to be met by two, one a doctor that was offered a permanent position at a local surgery and the other a permanent job at a car wash.

It is obvious that some of these people will be making use of the benefit system in the UK as this is their right to do so. Earning benefits in excess of a 500 pounds per month is not impossible. A pregnant woman at 25 weeks can receive benefits totalling £192 per week. At the moment they can use the NHS services for free but there are laws in the making whereby the Government is looking to stop so called “ Health Tourism”, making foreigners pay for their NHS use.

What are the main motivation factors for Romanians and Bulgarians to come to the United Kingdom, surely it is not the land of “milk and honey” as what many foreigners believe it to be. Times have changed dramatically over the last 4 years with the economy struggling, forcing the Government to make cuts wherever they can, and in turn this affects not just British citizens, but also immigrants wanting to come and live and work here.

Page 7: Uk Edition Jan 2014

It seems that the main motivational factor is money. To see it in perspective, we have to look at the average income for Romanians in their country.

Romanian salariesBenefits in the UK start at £56.25 for under 25s, £71 if over 25 or £111.45 a week for a couple(per month £243.75, £307, £482.95 respectively).

AVERAGE SALARY The average salary in Romania is €479 per month before tax, or €347 after tax. (£287 per month).

HALF the population of Romania earns £287 or less per month. They can receive a rise to £307 per month in job seekers allowance from 2014 in the UK, for not working.

The debate over whether UK benefits are too high, is for another day...

MINIMUM WAGE The minimum wage is €155 per month, (the government may raise this to €177 over the next 3 years). To clarify: minimum wage in Romania is £30 per week.

PEOPLE ON LOWEST WAGES The 'low wage threshold salary' is a an EU term - it defines the % of the population earning less than 2/3rds of the average wage. According to the EU the low wage threshold for Romania is €1.30ph (£1.08 per hour), compared to say Germany where it is €10 per hour. According to EU data, 25.6% of Romanians earn at or below the low wage threshold of €1.30 per hour.

So it's not sensationalist to say that a Romanian on job-seeker allowance will make more money on benefits in the UK than they will working full-time in Romania. It is quite incredible that 25% of the population earn £1.08 per hour or less.

For at least half the Romanian population (21.4m people) it is economically rational to quit their job and move to the UK and claim benefits.

The increased cost to tax-payers doesn't even go into the problems of pressures on social housing and the effects on unskilled workers who do not have enough job vacancies to pursue as it is.

THE HIGHEST WAGE The highest paid employment group in Romania is 'financial services' as in the UK, where salaries are €992 per month.

This compares to the UK minimum wage of €1,244 per month. Frankly, skilled workers coming to the UK for skilled jobs are always welcome in my book, financial services is such a skilled area immigration will have little effect, who cares about bankers wages! But what this demonstrates is that the gulf is so wide, even the highest paid group of professionals in Romania is better off in the UK working on minimum wage.

It is going to be interesting to see how this influx will affect the United Kingdom but only time will tell.

The World That Made MandelaBy Luli CallinicosBringing history and geography together, this is a large coffee-table-sized book filled with archival and contemporary images, telling the story of Nelson Mandela and his struggle for South Africa's freedom through the many places associated with his life. From his birthplace in Qunu to the Old Fort in Johannesburg, where he was held prisoner (and which is now the site of the Constitutional Court), from Soweto to Mpumalanga, the images provide a wonderful historical context for South Africa today, combining to form a unique "heritage trail".

Long Walk to FreedomBy Nelson MandelaThe towering figure of South Africa's liberation struggle began this autobiography in prison, having pages in tiny writing smuggled out by comrades. When he came out of jail in 1990, and went on to become South Africa's first black president in 1994, he continued the work, and it is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand Mandela, the times he has lived through and the war he waged for freedom. He also authorised a biography by Anthony Sampson (see box right), which provides much useful extra information and differing perspectives.

Tomorrow Is Another CountryBy Allister SparksSparks is a veteran South African journalist and author of The Mind of South Africa. His account of the transition from apartheid to democracy is one of several, but undoubtedly the best. It describes, from behind the scenes, the process that began with tentative contact between the sworn enemies, moving through the unbanning of the liberation movements and the complex negotiations that led to South Africa's first fully democratic election in 1994.

Top UK cycling routesTop UK cycling routesThe most fun you can have on two wheels

Green, cheap and great exercise, not to mention enormous fun, cycling is becoming ever more popular. London has launched its own cycle hire scheme and more of us than ever are exploring Britain by bike. We’ve got hundreds of cycle routes to choose from but here are our five favourites.

Millennium Coastal Park, Llanelli, WalesThe Millennium Coastal Park is a 12-mile stretch of coastline on the Burry Estuary which features a purpose-built traffic-free path following the coastline along the park's entire length. Previously an area of industrial wasteland, the park has been transformed into a tranquil green corridor offering superb views of the Gower Peninsula and a variety of attractions both natural and man-made.

Richmond to Hampton Court, London, EnglandWind your way along this photogenic section of the Thames from villagey Richmond to the glorious Tudor palace, Hampton Court. There are some great pubs along the way and even a sandy beach or two. For more information and other routes along the River Thames check out the Waterscape website.

Bristol and Bath Railway Path, West Country, EnglandLinking the twin West Country jewels of Bath and Bristol, this 13-mile stretch of disused railway track begins in the historic port of Bristol and passes via the picturesque villages of Mangotsfield, Warmley and Saltford before arriving in the heart of Bath.

Wastwater, Lake District, EnglandThe 12-mile cycle from Wastwater to Stanton Bridge via Gosforth is said to have the best view in the Lake District. Wastwater is the deepest lake in England and it’s surrounded by some glorious scenery including Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain.

Cairngorms, ScotlandThe uplands of Scotland are famed for their rugged beauty and these days, their excellent mountain biking terrain. Trails in the Cairngorms National Park are rarely waymarked - instead, bring a map (there are good route maps available locally) and go and explore.

How to Make Pressed Flower ArtPressed flowers can be used for making different kinds of art and crafts. Here are some easy crafts that you can make.

A flower, or rose, given by the special someone is unknowingly preserved in a book. When we come across it a couple of days later, we find that it has withered completely and the petals are about to fall. At that time it is no longer possible to preserve the flower in a book. In that case, you can think of making pressed flower art and keep the memory in unaltered condition! Pressed flower crafts can also be used to make homemade gifts like cards, jewellery, frames, etc. Here are the different craft options for you to have fun with.

Pressed Flower Art IdeasIf you already have pressed flowers ready, you can use them right away. If not, you can begin by pressing flowers, and preserving them for later use. Here are the different kinds of arts that can be made using pressed flowers.

Making Pressed Flower Cards

Things RequiredThings Required* Pressed flowers and leaves of your choice* Card stock* Glue* Tweezers* A soft brush

ProcedureProcedure* Firstly, try to arrange the flowers in different combinations on the card. You can roughly arrange them (without pasting them of course) and co-ordinate colors to make a design of your choice for the card.* Now either apply the glue to the back of the flowers or on the card. Gently place the flowers on the card and slowly tap them. Follow the same for pasting the remaining flowers and stems.* When you are completely done with pasting flowers and stems, you should keep the card under a heavy book for 5-6 hours.* After the recommended time, take the card out, check whether the flower is stuck properly. Now you can also decorate the card using sketch pens.* Write down your note and your card is ready! From the above procedure we see that making cards using pressed flowers is fairly easy!

Page 27: Uk Edition Jan 2014

Making Pressed Flower Bookmark

Things RequiredThings Required* 1 card stock sheet* Pressed flowers of your choice* Transparent paper* Coloring pens* Bookmark thread* Glue

ProcedureProcedure* Determine the size of the bookmark and cut the card stock sheet accordingly.* Glue the flowers or flower petals to make a design.* Make borders to the card or write like 'I like Books' or your initials to personalize the bookmark.* Cover with proper sized transparent paper and glue the ends.* Punch in a hole at the top and insert the bookmark thread and tie up the ends! Your pressed flower bookmark is ready!

Art is all about creativity and hence, you can come up with your own designs and creations using pressed flowers. So, what are you waiting for, collect the old flowers from your garden or vase and start with your work! Good luck!

If you were born in the UK or a Qualifying TerritoryIf you were born in the UK or a Qualifying Territory

This page will help you decide whether you are a British citizen, if you were born in the UK or a qualifying territory. The qualifying territories are all the British overseas territories, except the Sovereign base areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia (in Cyprus).

If you were born in the UK before 1 January 1983If you were born in the UK before 1 January 1983, you are almost certainly a British citizen. The only exception is if you were born to certain diplomatic staff of foreign missions who had diplomatic immunity.

If you were born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983If you were born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983, you are a British citizen if at the time of your birth one of your parents was:

* a British citizen; or* legally settled in the UK.

If you were born in a qualifying territory on or after 21 May 2002If you were born in a qualifying territory, you are a British citizen if either your father or mother is a British citizen. If neither parent is a British citizen, you will still be a British citizen if either your mother or your father was legally settled in either the United Kingdom or that particular territory at the time of your birth.

If your parents are citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA)If you were born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983 but before 2 October 2000, you are a British citizen if, at the time of your birth, either of your parents was an EEA citizen who was exercising Treaty rights under European Community (EC) law. This is because your parent's stay is regarded as having been free of a time limit under immigration laws.Since 2 October 2000, EEA citizens who have a conditional right of residence in the UK (such as workers and businesspeople) are not automatically regarded as free of a time limit under the immigration laws.Between 2 October 2000 and 29 April 2006, EEA citizens would not be regarded as free of time limit under immigration laws until they had obtained indefinite leave to remain in the UK.If you were born in the United Kingdom between 2 October 2000 and 29 April 2006 to parents who were EEA citizens, you will not be a British citizen unless one of your parents had been given indefinite leave to remain before the date of your birth. However, you may be able to register as a British citizen if one of your parents later gets indefinite leave to remain (see Registering your child as a British citizen or subject).Since 30 April 2006, EEA citizens are automatically considered free of a time limit under the Immigration Rules after they have exercised their Treaty rights for any continuous 5-year period. After 5 years, they automatically receive permanent residence status. They no longer need to apply for indefinite leave to remain. If you were born in the UK between on or after 30 April 2006 to parents who were EEA citizens, you are not a British citizen unless one of your parents had permanent residence status before the date of your birth. However, you may be able to register as a British citizen if one of your parents later gets indefinite leave to remain (see Registering your child as a British citizen or subject). If you were born in the UK on or after 2 October 2000 to EEA citizens who had an unconditional right of residence under EC law, you are a British citizen. People with unconditional right of residence include those who are retired or who cannot work because of illness or disability.

If your parents are family members of EEA citizensIf your parents are family members of an EEA citizen who was exercising Treaty rights, they may have been settled in their own right when you were born in the UK. If they were not, you are a British citizen only if the EEA citizen is your parent and was settled at the time of your birth.

Swiss citizensSince 1 June 2002, Swiss citizens and their family members have had similar residence rights to EEA citizens, and the information above will also apply to you if you were born in the UK on or after that date to a parent who is a Swiss citizen. Before that date, Swiss citizens are not normally regarded as having been free of immigration time restrictions unless they had indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.

If you were born in the UK to parents who are not British citizens and are not legally settled hereEven if you were born in the United Kingdom, you will not be a British citizen if neither of your parents was a British citizen or legally settled here at the time of your birth. This means you are not a British citizen if, at the time of your birth, your parents were in the country temporarily, had stayed on without permission, or had entered the country illegally and had not been given permission to stay here indefinitely.

What Happens If You Eat 5,800 Calories Daily on an LCHF Diet? What Happens If You Eat 5,800 Calories Daily on an LCHF Diet?

What happens if you “overeat” on an LCHF diet? It’s a common question and here’s one possible answer.

The young man Sam Feltham has done a three-week experiment, where he’s been eating enormous amounts of LCHF-food. On average 5794 calories daily of which “only” 10% as carbohydrates (menu).

According to over-simplified calorie counting, energy expenditure isn’t affected by what you eat. All excess calories you eat will then lead to weight gain. If this were true Feltham would have gained 16.5 lbs (7.5 kg) during the three weeks, but in reality he only gained 3.5 lbs (1.7 kg).

Here’s the explanation:

Theory and Reality

There’s a difference between calculated energy surplus and real energy surplus. Apparently Feltham didn’t have a large real energy surplus, as he didn’t gain more weight.

The most likely explanation to me is that his energy expenditure increased substantially during the experiment. Maybe there are other explanations? Perhaps his body also adapted by not taking up all the nutrients he ate?

I’m not surprised by the results. If you starve long term you don’t lose as much weight as simple calorie counting predicts. The body will decrease the metabolic rate. If you overeat you don’t gain that much weight. The body adapts and tries to maintain an appropriate fat mass.

Some find it hard to believe in Felthams results and suggest that he’s lying. I don’t think so. There are several previous reports from people who have done similar experiments – stuffed themselves with copious amounts of LCHF-food. Weight gain tends to be small or non-existent, so Feltham’s results seem to be typical.

HormonesHormones

The above applies as long as the body’s hormonal regulation is balanced. Eating large amounts of bad carbohydrates may interfere with hormonal balance. Large amounts of the fat-storing hormone insulin are then produced.

So what happens when you overeat bad carbohydrates to the extreme? A good example is the movie “Supersize Me”.

Morgan Spurlock did a similar experiment: he ate 5,000 calories daily for 30 days – at McDonalds. The difference was that this was not an LCHF diet, but HCHF (high carb high fat). There were about as many “excessive” calories, but Spurlock did not only gain 3.5 lbs (1.7 kg). He gained a whopping 24.5 lbs (11.1 kg).

Professor Fredrik Nyström did a study where twelve students overate, but to a less extreme degree, “only” a few thousand extra calories daily in the form of carbohydrate-rich fast food, for four weeks. Just adding these extra calories made them gain on average 14 lbs (6.4 kg).

Paulo Roberto, Sweden, made a similar TV documentary the other year. He ate large amounts of carbohydrate-rich junk food and gained 33 lbs (15 kg) in two weeks!

SummarySummary

There is a difference between overeating and overeating.

When eating bad carbohydrates it’s easy to gain weight quickly. You’ll get plenty of the fat-storing hormone insulin in your blood.

It’s generally hard to gain weight on an LCHF diet. It’s even difficult to eat too much food, as you then usually have to eat more than you want. Even if you force down large amounts of LCHF-food, against your will, the result is usually as it was for Feltham. It’s a constant struggle and weight gain will likely be modest.

Overweight people eating as much as they want on an LCHF diet will typically lose weight.

Snowdonia National Park

Snowdonia National Park, in North West Wales, is the largest National Park in Wales, home to 100 lakes, 37 miles of pristine coastline and beaches, moors and wetlands, and 90 mountain peaks.

You’ll find some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery in Snowdonia National Park, including Snowdon, the highest mountain in England at Wales at 1,085m, and Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales. Add to this 823 square miles of natural adventure playground to explore and you have an outdoor experience that’s hard to beat.

The rugged mountain peaks and low valleys make the perfect setting for a relaxing walk, challenging highland trek or off-road mountain bike climb. And the mountain lakes, rushing rivers and harbour waters are home to opportunities for sailing, surfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding and white-water rafting.

The area is steeped in history and culture, and there’s plenty of it to see, from Stone Age burial chambers and Roman forts to churches and castles. King Edward I built a series of castles during his conquest of North Wales in the 13th century, many of which are still around today. Don’t miss the stunning Harlech Castle perched on a cliff top and Caernarfon Castle, one of the world’s finest medieval structures.

Flatlands engineering are proud to announce they are now the sole UK distributor for the Meyers Manxter 2+2 dune buggy kit.

All kits are authorized by Meyers Manx USA and carry a UK identification plate and serial number. This fantastic looking car utilizes the standard length, unmodified VW beetle chassis and therefore does not have to be IVA tested when built. The Manxter is by far the best looking and nicest proportioned standard wheelbase dune buggy ever designed.

Safety is a big consideration in the Manxters design and unlike the traditional short wheelbase design, the rear seat passengers can now sit lower down at the same level as the driver within the confines of the cage structure. The Manxter also offers the option of front and rear seat inertia seat belt installations. http://www.flatlandsengineering.co.uk/http://www.flatlandsengineering.co.uk/
