Angel & Nazareth An inspiring group of rescu-ers came together to save a 12 year-old brother and sister who lost their home when their dis-abled owner was evicted. These sweet, shy seniors have settled in after being moved several times on the way to Wild Spirit. Thank you for helping us pam-per them in their Golden Years.

Angel & Nazareth Angel & her brother, Nazareth (black fur) were pur-chased and raised by a man when they were only 4 weeks old. Angel bonded with her owner but would only allow a few people to pet her. Angel was comfort-able enough to go on leashed walks, while her brother, Nazareth, refused. When Angel and Nazareth were 9 years old, their own-er was seriously injured in a fall and was hospitalized for some time. While recovering, the owner’s home was ransacked and he lost his job. Thankfully, his landlord was very caring and allowed him and his wolf-dogs to stay rent-free. Sadly, the landlord passed away and An-gel and Nazareth’s owner was evicted by the landlord’s family, leaving them all without a home. Knowing his wolf-dogs needed secure, escape -proof containment, as well as experienced handlers, the owner reached out to friends and neighbors for help so he could find proper placement for them. One of his friends from church called Pamela Jo at Lake Tahoe Wolf Rescue and immediately, Pamela Jo began reaching out to various sanctuaries and wolf rescue people. Doris Duncan, who runs Sonoma County Wildlife Rescue (SCWR) in Petalu-ma, CA, responded to Pamela Jo’s plea right away and told her that the two wolf-dogs could stay in her escape proof otter pen for a short time. Although SCWR would soon need the otter pen for rescuing otters, Angel and Nazareth had a temporary home. Shana Larson from Auburn, CA, transported the wolf-dogs to the SCWR and they were cared for by Doris and her team of volunteers and staff for almost two months.

Pamela Jo continued to search for qualified sanc-tuaries to permanently home Angel and Nazareth. The sanctuaries that responded to Pamela Jo could not take them, as most wolf-dog sanctuaries are inundated with large numbers of wolf-dogs. Being familiar with Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary’s ability to provide the best of care to innately wild canines, Pamela Jo contacted us. We agreed to temporarily place the two wolf-dogs in a 5,000 square foot off-site habitat until a habitat at our Sanctuary opens up for them. We send a Howl Out in gratitude to Pamela Jo for nev-er giving up until she found Doris Duncan and her staff at SCWR who were fantastic help when we came to pick up Angel & Nazareth. Thank you all for helping us keep these deserving siblings well-cared-for in their last years. Your tax deductible donations mean the world to our rescues. (More thank yous on pg. 10).

Brutus Our happiest high-content wolf-dog rescue was a beloved, ever-smiling boy who lived each day with joy, won the hearts of everyone who met him and was loved by everyone who helped us care for him. He was diagnosed with aggressive cancer last summer, but he continued to be his happy self. Just shy of his 10th birth-day, we found him lying in the spot where his long time love, Skye, passed away the week before. He was helped along by our Animal Care Supervisor, Rae, Executive Director, Leyton, and long-time volunteer, Elaine. We are heartbroken losing a love like Brutus, but we take comfort knowing that he and Skye are finally running free. Thank you for helping us care for this spectacular boy.

Skye A week after enjoying a special meaty cake for her sweet 16th birthday, our precious mid-content wolf-dog rescue, Skye, peacefully slipped away to join the Big Pack in the Sky. She was rescued from an inadequate home in Oregon where she was living in squalor. A kind-hearted lady picked her up and brought her to Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. Her loss is a painful one, but we celebrate her love for mischievous play with caretakers, her sweet spirit and take com-fort knowing she is now running free with the Big Pack. Thank you to all of those who helped us give Skye the pampered life she deserved with her handsome love, Brutus.

Contessa Our hearts were heavy the day we said goodbye to our 16 year-old, Contessa. She had suffered a stroke and we thought it best that we help her to pass on comfortably. We know she had many loving sponsors among our members and had found new fans from our Face-book posts, where her glorious personality made the world smile. Our beloved royal lady was an unforgettable character with majestic charm and beauty who won the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of serving her in her last years. We celebrate her love for life and take comfort know-ing she is now happily ruling The Big Pack in the Sky. Thank you to all of those who helped us give Contessa the royal treatment she deserved.

Our phenomenal Pack Mama, Parris McBride-Martin, blessed us with the coolest gift for our res-cues. We now have a new walk-in freezer for storing the raw meat that we pick up each week from our generous donors at Sysco Foods, Roadrunner foodbank and a New Mexico butcher. Our staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that our rescues enjoy the raw meat diet they need and de-serve, but as always, it takes fan-tastic partners and working equip-ment to make it all happen. We all sing a song of love and thanks to Parris for this vital contribution!

Navar Exactly a week after his 16th birthday party, our precious and gorgeous Tundra wolf, Na-var, joined The Big Pack in the Sky, following his beloved, Contessa, and his siblings, Akela, Brutus II, and Callie. Navar and his family came to Wild Spirit in April 2008 from Iowa after the children’s zoo where they lived closed. Though Navar was very shy at first, he learned to love massages from his caregivers in his golden years, especially after being blessed with his beautiful and social girl-friend, Contessa, who showed him what fun he could have with people. Our Animal Care Super-visor, Rae, and Program Director, Nicole, helped Navar on his journey to join the Big Pack in the Sky. We celebrate Navar’s gentle, noble spirit and take comfort knowing he is finally free. We thank you for opening your hearts to our rescues.BEST FRIENDS: Robin Shaug, Shirl Casner, Stacie Cranford, Gay & Paul Witherington, Grant & Lanie Gordon, Joanne Hadley, Joanna Kolodge, Mike Boyd, Susan Barrett, , Rob-ert Stecker & Beth Stuart, Naomi Bond, Patti & Gary Quil-liam, Levi Chalot, Lynn Koch, Shoshana R. Rayneby Rae McCue, Animal Care Sup. Rayne has endured a rocky life journey up until now, but his future finally looks bright! Like most of our rescues, our handsome low-content wolf-dog came to us after his own-er, who loved him very much, sadly could no longer provide for him after seven years of being Rayne’s devot-ed human. Owning wolf-dogs is tough and keeping them safe is tougher. Ani-mals like Rayne and the other six-ty-seven rescues at WSWS simply do not belong in captivity and his owner could not give him the security that he needed. When Rayne first arrived at our sanctuary, he was confused and scared, but instantly bonded with me. I did everything I could to make Rayne’s transition into Wild Spirit’s family easy, and spoiled him rotten. Since then, he has made many more human friends and caretakers de-spite his very aloof nature. Although Rayne may look intimidating with his pitch black coat, piercing yellow eyes, and thunderous bark, he is one of the most gentle-hearted animals we have. His favorite activity re-mains his morning walks. His adoring companion, affectionately known as

“Shasta II,” is his best friend. Rayne was an older man when res-cued, but he was the very model of health. About a year later, however, everything changed. Rayne began to lose the beautiful luster in his thick, black coat followed by extreme weight loss. We tried everything to beef him up, but no matter what we did, he would not gain weight. We watched helplessly as Rayne strug-gled with pain all over his body and sunk quickly into depression. We rushed Rayne to our veterinarian and he was diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or E.P.I., a gastrointestinal disorder that affects canines, felines, and even humans. Left untreated, it is always fatal. E.P.I is defined as a decrease or ab-sence of pancreatic enzymes. When canines have this disorder, the pro-teins, starches, and fats found in their diet cannot be broken down into pieces small enough to allow them to be absorbed through the intestinal wall. The value and sub-stance of the food, therefore, stays in the gastrointestinal tract and is passed undigested. The affected animal, without treatment, literally starves to death even though it may be constantly eating. The only treatment is a pancre-atic enzyme supplement combined with a high quality diet. It is very important that he does not eat any-thing (treats, scraps, etc.) without also ingesting the medication. It took another month and a half be-fore Rayne was healthy again, even on the prescribed medication in his food. What finally worked was feeding Rayne twice daily and tak-ing him off of raw meat and onto a

high-quality kibble diet. Finally, after several months, Rayne began to feel like himself again. He began to gain weight, have healthy stools, and the energy he used to have. He began to play, roughhouse, and demand his morning walks again. It was a long scary journey, but Rayne is now greeting his caretakers with a huge smile every morning. However, it is very pricey to keep Rayne feeling healthy. Due to the extremely delicate balance of med-ication and nutrition, one wrong slip and he could experience a bout of illness to set him back. We are ask-ing for help to continue purchasing this life saving medication. Each bot-tle of PancrePlus costs about $25.00 and lasts for sixteen days. Equally important is the Kirkland Nature’s Domain salmon meal and sweet potato dry food you can find on our Amazon.com wish list or at Cost-co. Donations can be made over the phone, through our website or you can sponsor Mr. Rayne himself. Please make sure you give your in-formation so Rayne can send you a special ‘thank you’ and your receipt for a tax dedcution! Watching Rayne experience such pain was heartbreaking for us all, but we are so grateful that we were able to turn it around, all thanks to our dedicated veterinarians at Can-yon Crossroads Animal Hospital in Tijeras, NM and our amazing do-nors. We are grateful to our spon-sors, members, and guests. Without you, all that we do for Rayne and all of our other rescues could not be possible. We look forward to many, many more early morning walks with Rayne!

RAVEN’S EYEGhost Pack

By Crystal Castellanos, Assistant Director

After losing the “matriarch” of their pack Lady, remaining Ghost Pack members, Nyme-ria, Arya, Brienne and Ghost underwent more changes with their pack structure. Our staff watched Nymeria and Arya vy-ing for the status of being the “lead female” of the pack. There were many signs that pointed toward Nymeria potentially en-dowing herself with the title, but one morning, a stunned caretaker found Nymeria had suffered extensive injury to her face. Nymeria was immediate-ly taken to the vet, where they cleaned up her lip and added over 40 stitches. Needless to say, it was not an option to put her back in her pack, much to her dismay. Directly across from Ghost Pack, lived Lakota. His habitat’s sub-enclosure has a roof and

that is where she recuperated for two weeks. During her recovery time, staff moved Ghost Pack to a larger habitat behind Lakota. Our hope was that when Nymeria fully recov-ered, we would in-troduce her to Lakota and that she would be content living next to her family. After her recov-

ery, we opened the gate and watched as she said a quick hel-lo to Lakota. She immediately ran over to the shared fence-line with her family and greet-ed them through the fence. All seemed to go well for almost two weeks, until one morning, their caretaker reported that Lakota was missing a patch of fur on the side of his neck. Staff investigated and saw nothing out of the ordinary; interactions between the two were cordial. However, during feeding, the caretaker saw fur sticking out from the other side of his neck; this time, staff stayed in the hab-itat for a longer period of time. From afar, Lakota didn’t seem intimidated by Nymeria and she showed no antagonism toward him. She paced the fence close to her family and she stopped at a corner of the habitat, neigh-boring her family and Silva & Nakota. Her body language showed interest in this particu-lar corner, so staff checked it. We found that all three habitat res-

cues, were pulling at the fences; Nymeria’s corner was a breach so we quickly ushered her into the sub enclosure again. We concluded that while she was busy trying to get back to her family, Lakota showing curiosity in her work, was being chased off with neck grabs. For Lakota’s safety, we did not reintroduce her to him. We had three more single boys to try her with, but out of the three, Lucian seemed like a good choice. We moved her to Lucian’s sub- enclosure and watched their in-teractions through the fence. Af-ter 24 hours and witnessing good nose-to-nose interactions, we let her into his habitat. She didn’t immediately warm up to him, but it was obvious that Lucian was pleased with the prospect of a new companion. He was (and still is) very patient with her. Un-fortunately, she’s not happy in this new habitat as she is farther away from her family. You may be asking yourselves, “well, why don’t you put her back with her family?” It could be dangerous to put her back in with her family, especially after losing their matriarch, Lady, and weeks of Nymeria’s absence. We believe that the weeks that Lady was absent from her pack helped with her demise and we do not want to see this happen with Nymeria. We wish they could un-derstand our English language so that Nymeria would know that we have her separated from her pack with no ill-intentions and in fact, for her best interest.

As I write this, we plan to move rescues to new habitats so that Lucian and Nymeria can live next to Ghost Pack. We will be adding reinforcements to the habitat before the move, to deter her from trying to pry herself into Ghost Pack’s habitat. We all hope and pray that she will be content with living next to them and that there are no squabbles between her and Lucian in this habitat. If for some reason it doesn’t work out for him to live with her af-ter this move, we already have a habitat open for him to move into. Please send positive thoughts to Nymeria and to Lu-cian. Thank you for opening your hearts to our rescues.

Zoerro photo: C. Castellanos

Happy Trails, Zoerro We and former staff member, Rory Zoerb, find it difficult to inform everyone that we will be going our separate ways. After much con-sideration, both WSWS and Rory agree that it is time to turn a new page. Rory originally pur-chased Zoerro as a pup and after discovering that animals like Zoerro are not meant to be pets, brought Zoerro to WSWS to live. After spending some time to help Zoerro adjust, Rory offered to stay at WSWS and became part of our team. We know firsthand that Rory and Zoerro share an extraordinary bond with each other and we’d never want to break that bond, and so we are happy to announce that Rory took Zoerro with him. We have taken Zoerro off of our list of animals for sponsoring, as he will no longer be a part of WSWS. Thank you all for helping us care for him during his time with us. Sponsor A Rescue - $125 per year NEW SPONSORSHIP OFFER! Please lift our ‘low-paw’ rescues up to the dou-ble digits! It takes a minimum of 17 sponsors per year at $125 (about $10/month) each to feed one of our deserving rescues. We would love to see each of them have hundreds. Our sponsorship package makes a great gift, too! It comes with a personalized photo certificate, photo magnet and newsletter. If you would also like our original wolf T-shirt, you will be offered the special price of ONE shirt for $10 (normally $30).

Please visit our website to sign up to get each issue emailed to you, if you like.

Enrichment- Bunny Baskets! Along with daily enrichment from caretakers, we provide four spe-cial enrichment treats each year. After very careful consideration, we have decided that it is in the best interest of our rescues no longer to invite folks to our enrichment days at Wild Spirit. Many of our newer rescues are too shy to enjoy themselves around a crowd of people. Of course, you’re welcome any time for regu-lar tours or encounter packages! Your vital donation of $35 each quarter helps us provide unique treats and toys plus helps us pro-vide our rescues with the raw meat diet they crave and deserve. It takes a lot of hard work, driving, vehicle maintenance, storage and supplies to make this happen. On behalf of happy rescues, thank you for your thoughtful support!

Vet Visits We are blessed with great vet care from Can-yon Crossroads Animal Hospital, Derma-tology for Animals, Eye Care for Animals & TLC Animal Hospital. So much goes into the care of our rescues, especially our seniors. Everyone is checked several times through-out the day. Those who let us touch them are checked for lumps or injuries. We also check gait, fur, eyes, appetite, energy, etc., as well as checking their habitats for changes in drop-pings or vomitting. Vet visits can be stressful for our non-social rescues, but we feel they de-serve the highest quality of life we can provide. Your donations make it happen!Tia We noticed our 8 year-old New Guinea Singing Dog had a runny nose. A round of anti-biotics for a sinus infection cleared it up. Rayne Our handsome low-content wolf-dog had a bad tooth pulled and his other teeth cleaned. See page 6 for more about Rayne.Saint Our handsome boy who was mis-iden-tified as a wolf-dog had an abscess drained un-der his chin followed by antibiotics, and got a clean bill of health on his follow-up visit. Beric Dondarrion High-content wolf-dog, Beric Dondarrion, had a horribly mis-aligned jaw when we rescued him. His recent radiographs revealed no abnormalities, a dental exam confirmed his teeth are in good health, and he was treated for an overgrowth of bacteria in his intestine. Powder Our 10 year-old Arctic wolf had a general check-up and his blood checked and is doing well! Thunder Our 10 year-old Arctic wolf had his skin checked and a tumor removed from his back right leg. He’s doing well, and we’re hoping for no more lumps. Your thoughtful donations are not only vital, but tax-deductible! Just make a note that you would like to contribute to our vet bill. Howl-ing thanks for helping us keep our rescues as happy and healthy as we can.

Furthest From the Wild We are thrilled to have been a part of the documentary, “Furthest From the Wild” which brings awareness to sanctuaries like ours who rescue other wild animals like big cats and primates and work hard every day to take care of their rescues who are also victims of the pet trade. We were lucky enough to be a part of their up-coming series when they filmed our recent rescue of Angel and Nazareth. We’ll keep you posted about when you can tune in! For now, please vis-it furthestfromthewild.org to learn more and watch clips. Thank you to the wonderful brothers, Alex and Sam Tello, and their crew, for including us. Best of luck to you on this new ven-ture and your crucial work!

Walk for Hope Photo of Sugar by Meredith Williams Those of you who have come to visit know how vital the store, Candy Kitchen Trading Post, is to not only our guests, but also our community. Our store is struggling, and manager, Mike Francis, walked an epic journey on foot from Chicago back to Texas along Route 66 to raise awareness about our area. Several articles were written about him and he met great folks along the way, several of whom came out to visit our res-cues. Thank you, Mike, for this creative and brave way to help our community!

Exclusive Posters We’ve added an exclusive on-line poster store to our gift shop with some of our favorite full color photos. They are a smaller size of 12” x 18” and are printed on very thick paper. We have five styles now, but will be expanding our poster store over time! Please visit our website to shop for yourself or a loved one! You can also give us a call at 505-775-3304 to place your order. All proceeds help our rescues. Your support means the world to us.
