This transcription from the original diary contains language contemporaneous of the time

and is being presented as part of a historical record. Please note that the transcription

has not been reviewed for final editing.

    Preliminary notes by transcriber:

At the end of this diary volume are items in the "Memoranda" section. There is

a partial abbreviated diary in the "Cash Account" section. In the "Bills Payable"

section are some accounts for Glen Alpine, and these are continued in the section of

pages at the end of the volume for the months of 1903. On the blank inner surface of

the back cover are some notations and figures.

Entry of 8 April indicates that Sue had once been a school teacher in Fresno. Met

some of her old pupils there.

After a preliminary group went up a few days before, Sue and children left for

the whole season at Glen Alpine on 12 June and returned on 7 October. Pierce

himself went up more than once, and there are a good number of references to Glen

Alpine expenses before, during, and after the season, indicating an active role of

managing and running the place by the Pierces, especially Sue.
