Gardner getting up sheep for sale -

Drove to Sacramento to attend meeting of Legislative Committee -

Neither C. C. Teague nor Mr Harrold J. Powell were present. Acted as President -

Secretary Wilson was called out to attend wife in childbirth

Lunched with committee. Lost our quorum and adjourned

Stopped at Clunie 202.

Attended Farm Bureau meeting in Assembly chamber. Cocherna & Dr. Walker

Very foggy & cold -

Ray began plowing in 134 acre field with 75 three plows and a heavy harrow -

Harriet went to Davis in p.m. shopping -

Jeff Donnenwirth called up this a.m. to say the Deputy-Grand Master of I. O. O. F. of

this district was to be in Davis this evening -

About 8 p.m. I started for Davis. The fog cam in fearfully thick and with wind blowing

was very cold - After getting the mail I returned and did not attend Lodge meeting.

Am far from well today - Am lame -

Harriet & Muriel went to Sunday School.

Gardner shipped 50 head of sheep sold through the U. C. Farm for Santa Rosa - P [?]

Gardner went to town when last load went and came home late -

We arrived at Carlin at 6 a.m. and were delayed there until 10.45 by freight train

wreck ahead -

Wired office relative to Schmitts finances -

Wrote article for Democrat -

Got out of Carlin 10.45

Passed wreck at 2.15

Bad wreck 15 or more cars loaded with merchandise were wrecked -

Got into Ogden 8.15 7 hours late -

Changed watch, by moving it up one hour to take on Mountain time

At Rawlins Montana at 8 a.m. were due there at 12.30 a.m.

Very bright morning

But little snow remains on ground -

Just passed Hanna Coal mines -

Slept well last night but do not feel very well this morning -

as I write we are stopped out in the open - apparently we are having engine troubles -

Had lunch early as dinner was taken off at Harrisburg. Our car switched to

A darkey snatched purse from lady on 2nd floor and jumped down to first and ran -

was caught by cop after 1 block chase -

W. L. Porter called brought my mail. Harriet writes of the death of Mr. F. F. Dopking -

Pierce Porter and Geo. Ryder are here in Chicago.

Sat 5 Feb 1921

Sent Street ass[ess]ment $6.75 to Richmond Cal.

Tried to get a lower berth on an 8 p.m. Santa Fe train for California

- nothing available until the 21st - Got one on the 11.50 train on the 8th $112.

Took Soo Line 1.45 train for Antioch

Homer Pierce met met at depot and Frank Hunt drove me up town for valise Key and

then to Homers'.

Roy had 3 children 1 - 4+, 1 - 2+ 1 - 1+

Up until after 12 P. M.

Roy took me to train due at 7.25 A. M.

train late - a delayed fast train came leaving at 8 a.m. into Chicago at 9.30

Left Chicago at 11.50 a.m. on Santa Fe train No 19 in lower 3 for the West -

Got into Williams Arizona at 12.00 M-

Left at 1.15 for the Grand Canyon 60 miles distant -

Took in the near by outlook the Indian dance - and the curio shops -

Had a bad night was affected by the altitude -- 7000 ft.

Left Grand Canyon at 8.20 stopped 1 1/2 hrs at Williams left at 1.15

Reached Needles about 6 p.m.

Passed through much desolate country -

There is a very queer rock formation in ----- [name not given] canyon near the Indian

School -

At Fresno about 6 a.m. beautiful day - I seems good to again be in California - Now

Velma is at 585 - 40th St

Left on 5 p.m. train for Davis -

Harriet & Gardner came for me.

After taking all home got to Key Route about 1 a.m.

Went to Premier Machinery Co. 22 Ave and left order for 3 sets blue prints of our

almond bleacher this morning -

Fixed tire - went to Davis

Attended meeting of Winters Almond Ass'n -

They elected Mr. Caldwell Representative.

Mr. Tucker gave them minute detail of Exchange condition.

T. C. drove up, with Mrs. Tucker, Billy and T. C's cousin and his wife.

Drove into Sacramento - Mrs. Killespie went to Oakland

Saw Hecke relative to going to meeting of Federated Farmers of America

- He pleaded to have Taylor left him

Was at plant - saw Schmidt not Bailey -

Got a few things for children and house -

Am far from feeling well today -

Stomach troubles are annoying

Gardner finishing wheat sowing. He ran tractor until 3 A. M.

Drove into Sacramento - Sac. Hotel 376.

As Vice President of Agricultural Legislative Committee presided at conference with

other organizations - Mr. Teague is absent on account of illness of his wife.

Mr. Powell absent, sick.

Discussed many measures -

Held fine banquet at Sacramento Hotel

Had many members of Legislature present - Had map of California shown with its

diversified products on table in center.

Held another meeting after banquet.

Held sessions of our A. L. Committee all day.

Went in evening to Assemble Chamber where meeting of Regents of the University

were defending the policy of the Agricultural department.

Was literally kidnapped and force to not only speak but speak first -

Perry Gammon and Prof ---- [name not given] and I were against the field

Gardner and many other Davis people were there

Gardner took me to S. P. Depot when I boarded Pullman in upper berth for Oakland -

left at 3.35

Got into Oakland 6.50

Took 7.05 Ellsworth St. line for Berkeley.

Went to LaFayette apts. where Frankie Porter, Mildred & baby were stopping at Mrs.

Hanson's -

Went with Porters to 40th & San Pablo St depot of Santa Fe Line. They took 9 A. M.

train for Chicago.

- had $39.00 worth excess baggage

The Rider girls & Mrs. Hansen were there -

Went to 585 - 40th St Schaeffer's where Velma Porter and her mother stopped - Got

jitney and went to 16th St depot -

Velma left 11.38 on S P T.[?] 2 for Chicago.

afternoon - not out in evening

Sun 27 Feb 1921

Was so worn out last night that when I came in about 5.30 I took outer clothes off and

laid down for a rest - Woke up once, took shoes off and slept until morning.

Strolled about town in a.m. Took car out to Cliff House -

Back and at work in room -

Went to Casino

worked until 1 p.m.

did not sleep Wed after retiring -

Mr. T. C. Tucker called for me while I was out -

Sproule had floor most of afternoon in the Senate sitting as a committee of the whole -

Wrote up an address on the need of buildings at the Davis U. C. Farm.

Attended the hearing of U. C. appropriations in the Senate sitting as a committee of

the whole and spoke on the measure -

Followed by Dunlap, Gammon Robson

Left about 6 p.m. for home in auto -

Left for Sacramento.

Attended hearing of Regents budget and Board of Control -

Home via Davis -

Harriet had "500" Ladies party -

Went to East field to help Gardner with engine.

Two men came from Red Cross employment Bureau in response to phone sent after

Barnard, Leavitt Schaffer Russell & Pierce.

Meeting took a friendly turn

In p.m. in Senate - got Joint Resolution No 24, a memorial to Congress on almonds

through Senate - They had a call of the house, as many were at a Base ball game.

We called at Howard Vaughan's and saw his short horn bulls, some of which are poor

Took ---- [name not given] back to Dixon - We then drove to R. J. Currey's to see

bucks - his are fair - Went home for lunch, then to Elmo Montgomery's to see bulls.

Went with Gardner Albert and ---- [name not given] a stock buyer of Oakland and his

attendant with 11 head of bulls, including our old broken down one to Davis - The

bulls sold for 4c per lb and brought $35.30 save 2 sold to Del Grieve at $100.00 each.

Also had some 40 mutton sheep sold at 5 dollars.

We got 4 thoroughbred registered bucks from the University Farm -

I made another trip to Davis in the afternoon for 3 more bucks from the Farm - Price

$35.00 each.

Drove to Dixon to see Howard Vaughan's short horn bulls - He asks $350.00 for what

is only a fair bull -

Drove to Caledonia Farms in West Sacramento. Saw Andy Simpson and looked over

the bulls

They are to [be] put in sale of May 26th. Gardner's heifer there for breeding to

Caledonia [blank space as if something were left out] is not yet ready to ship.

Went to plant, saw Schmitt & Bayley -

They put first fire in incinerator furnace.

Albert and I fixed gate at county road -

also put in 3 telephone poles and fixed culverts.

Gardner worked all forenoon on the 25 Best - got 75 started a little in afternoon.

Three sheep shearers came from Dixon with 2 one horse rigs -

Later had J. R. Wilson & wife and Van Bernhard at ice cream and around the Farm in

Dix went with me to street car - had refreshments.

business, losing but $10,000 -

Gardner & I went to almond plant at noon hour -

We attended the banquet of the boosters, at the Hotel Sacramento -

The Lake County Almond Assn held its annual meeting on the Stubbs ranch. They

also had a barbecue. Had fine meeting -

T. C. Tucker & wife were there, coming from Calistoga and returning there tonight T.

C & I spoke. I drove to Lakeport - Stopped at [name not given] Hotel room 15 -

Went to chatauqua entertainment.

Finally paid room rent to the janitor left my check for 50c for garage charge and left

for Upper Lake where I breakfasted and got 8 gallons gasoline 33c

Gardner, having Bola Singh in bin, put 90 sacks of barley up in bin in one hour -

Boys broke shoe in harvester and brought it to shop for repairs about 11 a.m. Worked

on it during noon hour - they got out about 1.15 p.m.

Went to Davis for meat, spuds, ice and reel [?] slats.

Gardner and family went to Dixon to look into grain market -

His advised to hold.

Had phoned a telegram from John E Raker, M. C. Washington stating that a 60 days

Remodeled loading chute in a.m.

A fire broke out about 2 p.m. at the James Burroughs dairy ranch on old Currey

place, one half mile south of us.

It burned all B's buildings, save a shack -

The wind took burning shingles clear into our alfalfa field - It set the dry grass on fire

on creek and burned some fencing.

Tues 28 June 1921

Cool South wind -

Went to nursery barn & cleared away dry grass - Went to Burroughs' place scene of

fire yesterday.

The loss is complete

A truck loaded with milk was burned - The two silos as far as filled alone stand -

Gathered star thistle.

At noon Gardner's two men, who were haying quite short off -

Gardner finished the mowing and I the raking of the alfalfa.

The boys got into the Tennessee barley opposite Robsons about 4 p.m. Got 27 sacks

to round.

Many field fires occurred today. One in the direction of Madison burned most of day.

One toward Elvira was large - one toward Woodland was large - other smaller ones

were noted - one broke out about 1 p.m. on Kidwell place near almond orchard and

burned across Kidwell' into R. Curreys' 160 acre field of fine club wheat and to

railroad on East -

Harvesters did not run

2 Men gathered up wheat in A. M. & quit. stole oil -

Monsha & Bola worked on creek barn, Ray on engine -

The old Roth dwelling 1/2 mile east of Plainfield burned this morning about 10 oclock.

The fire ran through Judge Anderson's Oestes & Cambell's to Putah Creek - Boys took

About 4 p.m. a fire broke out on the Hansen place from defective electric pump wiring

burning a field of fine barley -

Choreman went to Sacramento.

Was met by Mr. J. M. Patterson of the Georgia Soft shelled Pecan Association of

Was at packing house where negroes came in with days picking and had it weighed.

The days pick was 10,941 lbs. -

They do no processing save dry and grade the nuts. Same [some?] are boxed in 5, 10

Windsor came and staid at the Davenport 1209 over night - Was visiting with me until

10.30

Am pretty sick with a cold -

Mon 21 Nov 1921

Clear in a.m. Snow in p.m.

Felt pretty badly this morning -

Betty[?] came in about 7 a.m.

Had gone back to bed.

Dressed - went to breakfast and felt better.

Windsor & I walked about town

There is so much snow may jitney lines have suspended operations

Went with Windsor on trolley line to his home - had luncheon and returned about 5

p.m. to Davenport -

It snowed a considerable part of the afternoon.

Tues 22 Nov 1921

Cold though warmer than lately.

The C. M & St P. trains are running late. The East bound is 4 hours late the West

bound 2 hours late.

Left Spokane at 11.10 in Couer(sic) D'Alene sleeper.

St Othello, the beginning of the electrically operated portion of the road we lost about

two hours while the crews were tinkering on the electric motor.

We finally [we joined?] to a steam locomotive and ran into Seattle on steam.

We reached Seattle about 2.20 a.m. nearly six hours late -

Passed through much open, rocky country -

Stopped at Hotel Washington, Seattle, Room 322.

Went to tower of L. C Smith building 500 ft.

Tried to go on sight-seeing trip but they could not get a load.

Visited the Free Market. There was a great jam there -

Attended the Apple Show of the North West. They gave a reception to their "Apple

Queen" -

Cloudy and rainy -

Left Seattle at 8.10 for Portland -

Saw Camp Lewis of war time fame -

Nice trip - fine scenery - many vegetable gardens.

Train ran an hour late owing to delay at Tacoma -

Portland about 3.30 p.m.

Stopped at Hotel Portland Room 309

Attended theater

Rained at intervals rather close together.

Did but little -

No excursions going out -

Got reservations for home trip tomorrow -

Left Portland at 9 a.m. on No 15 S. P.

Passed through much interesting country.

Camp Lewis, of wartime renown was passed through. Many saw-mills are running.

The State Highway near Portland has been overflowed and bridges are washed out -

The trip along the upper Sacramento river is an interesting one.

It had not rained much in California.

Changed cars in Sacramento, taking No 17, the local train for Davis -

Gardner, Harriet and the children Marjorie and Muriel came to meet me -

My cold is still very bad -

Tried to see F. P. Deering. Phoned him at about 10.20.

He said he had a client coming at 11 and would call me and make a date. Was in

office until 2.30 and heard nothing from him.

Went to see Dr. Hugo Wahl, Pacific Building relative to statement of account for Mrs. P

Theater in evening.

Field Marshall Foch of France came to town today - Saw him in the procession on

Market street.

Bot Xmas cards -

Left at 2.40 for Davis.

Was at Cal. Dev. Assn relative to some letters they wished me to sign.

Harriet, the children Mrs. Killespie and I drove to Woodland to attend the Elks'

Memorial service at Christian church Woodland.

Gardner and Monsha started 75 tractor plowing in west knoll field -

Went to Davis, made deposits at Bank and transferred money to Savings department.

Got 2 kgs nail and some round iron for Gardner.

Took Harriet's car and got new battery at Frost's.

Went to town in a.m. and got man, Ed Johnson for Gardner - from Enterprise

Clear & Cold.

Harriet, the children and I drove into Sacramento. Got 2 toy doll carriages, a trunk

and confectionery. Had lunch at Travelers Hotel.

Went to Crockers inspecting type-writer desks - to C. A. G Ex Got underclothes 2

suits (union) & 1/2 doz socks for self -

Home about 6 p.m.

Gardner moved harrow to N. W. Knoll field -

Thurs 8 Dec 1921

Foggy -

Started late on acct of not being able to locate papers, for 8.37 train - missed it and

returned home

Sent $32.00 to Cosmos Club Washington D. C. and copied Nat Nut Growers tariff

resolution -

Took 12.15 train for City.

Gardner began sowing barley in N. W. knoll field -

Met T. H. Ramsay on boat and conversed rest of route.

Electricity was "off" several hours this forenoon -

Cool frosty.

Ed Johnson and I put in cement foundation for gate in front of house and also cement

braces for cement heads at culverts on road from house to county highway.

Wed 14 Dec 1921

Frosty.

Gardner moved harrows to East field - had 3 lambs butchered at State Farm for S. P.

Pullman service.

Went to town in p.m. and looked over my safe deposit box.

Monsha is plowing in East field -

Land is quite dry but plows well.

Very cold -

Took Harriet to north gate to meet auto stage as she is going shopping with Mrs. W O

Russell in Sacramento.

Went to San Fran on 8.37 train - Sutter 233.

Attended luncheon of California Development Association at Palace.

Dr. Meade and Wm Sproule spoke on land settlement.

Called at Habernichts and saw proofs of photo

Was at office did not see T. C. T. as he was out.

Dix lunched with me on Bush St - Gave Dix $10.00 for fare home Xmas.

Left on 11 p.m. train for Fresno, en-route as delegate from Cal Dev. Assn to Valley

Citrus Fair at Visalia

Pleasant cloudy -

Arrived in Fresno 8.10 a.m. breakfasted and left soon after for Visalia - Our

delegation, numbering finally a dozen, was met and escorted to the Fair and were

courteously treated.

This Fair is fine -

Citrus fruits, apples, vegetables etc are creditable - The auto exhibit had Xmas

setting. The machinery exhibit was not large but was good -

Left at 7.25 for Fresno, Stopped at Hotel Fresno 528 -

It sprinkled beginning at Visalia. Dance tonight at hotel.

Had Christmas tree exercises tonight - It was a very enjoyable occasion.

Went to 54th Ave Oakland in evening.

Back in San Francisco to New Year street celebration.

It was a disgrace to our civilization.

Drunkenness was rampant and hoodlumism was the order of the day -

It began raining about 12 P.M. and soon dispersed the crowd.

Gardner sold five hogs to Mace of Dixon @ 7 1/2c average 200#
