This transcription from the original diary contains language contemporaneous of the time and is being presented as part of a historical record. Please note that this transcription

has not been reviewed for final editing. Please contact us with any questions.

Preliminary notes by transcriber:

There is another diary volume with the date 1922 on it. It is a Wanamaker diary, put

out by Wanamaker's of Philadelphia, a store Pierce visited on a trip in 1921. The diary

includes some notes in pencil about the location, history, geography, economy, places

of interest of Hawaii. This seems to be connected with Pierce's trip to Hawaii of the

following year, February and March of 1923. In addition there seem to be drafts of

letters by Pierce in this volume tied in with the Almond Growers organization (on the

pages for March 7th and 8th.)

In the two "Memoranda" pages at the end of the present volume Pierce has a few

figures having to do with the accounts of the ranch.

University Farm

On January 1, Gardner Pierce had some people from the U. C. Farm as guests at the

ranch, including Dr. Goffin. From 2 to 5 January Pierce attended a short course on

Tractors at the U. C. Farm. On 1 March Pierce noted that he re-wrote a Resolution

requesting that a farmer be appointed to membership on the Board of Regents of U. C.

Earlier the Pierces had lent a 25 H. P. Best tractor to U. C. Farm for short course

purposes, and on 14 Apr it was returned to the ranch. On Sat. June 10th James

Wilson, U. C. Farm sheep man was at ranch. On 24 June Gardner took some sheep to

U. C. Farm sale. On 7 August Pierce got Salem buckets at U. C. Farm. On 24 October

Pierce attended the dedication of the Horticulture and Dairying buildings and lunched

at the Gymnasium; also attended a meeting of the Horticultural Division of the

Agricultural Legislative Committee there. On November 14 Pierce attended a luncheon

and parade of stock to be sent to the International in Chicago. On 21 December

several members of the Farm faculty were at the ranch. On December 29 a Mr. Greer,

foreman at U. C. Farm came to see stump puller at ranch.
