Preliminary notes by transcriber:

In the Memoranda and Cash Account sections at the end of this volume are a brief

comment on the year 1891, and what amounts to an abridged version of the whole

diary. On the last Bills Payable page, the final page of the volume, is a record of colts

foaled and mares bred.

The Pierces attended Henry M. Stanley's lecture in Sacramento on 17 March.

1 May Pierce registered the death of John Le Conte, and he attended his funeral in

Berkeley on 3 May.

Aunt Ann [Dopkings or mother-in-law of Dopkings?] died 30 May in Woodland.

Pierce used the term "O.K." on June 18, the first appearance of this major

Americanism in these diaries.

Writes of taking electric car from San Francisco to Berkeley for his UC reunion.

Mentions the name "Oeste" for the first time, in connection with school meeting on 25

July 1891.

Throughout are entries about Pierce's participation in the board of the Fairfield school,

including discussions and action on construction and repair of building (22-24 Aug).

Even with no children of school age, Pierce had been active in school matters for

several years, purchasing and delivering supplies, delivering salary to teacher, being

member of the board.

Woodland county fair 3-5 Sept.

Mention of Vacas family building house opposite Methodist church.

First mention of gas engine, 11 Sept. Mentioned again at State Fair. Best wins first

prize on his gas engine, 18 Sept. Pierce sold a gas engine on the 27th Sept. He

became quite involved in gas engine business in this year. cf 2 Oct.

Birth of second son to the Pierce family, 11 Nov.

In November Pierce attended several lectures in Sacramento, including one by a

Theosophist. Also he saw Jasp. Keene's Merchant of Venice and Richard III.

Took coop of Turkeys and one of roosters to Davis -

Sue and I went in buggy -

- took 4 rolls butter - got water pipe - trees &c - keg 8d nails.

Deposited $200 with B. F. Ligget for Mother.

Wed 14 Jan 1891

Set trees - planted potatoes on old vineyard ground - Sue and I went to Mr.

McMillans to engage poultry turkeys - shot two ducks.

Henry finished pruning

Began plowing summerfallow in East field.

Sent Paul for 6 hen turkeys to McMillans - he got only five 48#.

Got 19 head of hogs from LaRue's home - put them in small vineyard field.

Sprinkled a trifle -

Sue went to Sacramento to see Dr. Gardner - she took electric bath also.

Put bacon in smokehouse

fixed wind mill -

Mrs Miller and Celia called as did some gentleman looking for poultry.

Sat 17 Jan 1891

Sue and I went on excursion train to Marysville to attend State Citrus Fair. Left Davis

11.50 reached M 2.15 left M 9.40 reached D 12.00 p.m. Dined at Presbyterian

ladies lunch rooms - Got bugg[y] & rode about town. The display was fine and the

trip enjoyable. 17 carloads of people

Staid last night at Mother's Attended Presbyterian Church in a.m. Sue joined.

Attended Methodist church in p.m. home at 6 p.m.

Put out trees and vines.

Began plowing orchard

Sue and I went to Davis in the afternoon. Sue signed and sent Deed to Glen Alpine to

Warren Olney 101 Sansome St. San Francisco.

We called at Mr. Hamel's but found the girls out.

Dr. Ruddock is visiting Mother.

Henry began plowing on east side of field

Paul got three more hogs home from LaRue's - we have 38 here now.

Paul is hauling manure into front yard from creek.

Sue and I went to Sacramento on 11 a.m. train - took baths of Dr. Cook. Sue tried to

see Dr. Gardner but he was not in Come out at 3.05

Sat 24 Jan 1891

Went out and shot two wild hogs - hauled them in on wagon - got sow from vineyard

field - The two large ones are fine -

A young man from Canada came looking for work - hired him and he helped butcher.

Went to town got man's trunk and the poultry coop - sent 30 doz eggs G. B. A.

Sun 25 Jan 1891

Quite strong north wind.

Mon 26 Jan 1891

Yen went to town last night on foot came back at 5 a.m. today.

North wind - Set new man to hauling manure and grape vines.

Took red yearling bull to Davis to ship to N. Gilmore - Bull got cut on wire fence

Mother has gone to Woodland

Mr. Dopking's folks are sick.

Went to Woodland to see Aunt Ann's folks. Mother was there. Aunt Ann is bad off.

Bought Johnson's Map for school and foolscap paper.

Thurs 12 Feb 1891

Watered things in yard. Went shooting and got 7 ducks.

Went into lower field in p.m. put down straw - drove out Mr. Miller's hogs &c.

Went to Davis with Sue -

She went to Sacramento for treatment. Fixed Mother's roof and pump -

Yen came home - brought a little China boy with him.

Old Sam mule died and was hauled out.

Sue and I went to town in p.m. Got keg nails rice and shoes for Henry -

Mr. W. G. Button was buried in Sacramento today - He died Sunday. Mr. Drake is

very low.

There is much sickness in the country now -

Sue is sick today.

Went out to where boys are fencing in p.m. - shot 2 ducks

Went to Hext's -- Paid Tauzer $20.00 for plowing last spring -

Am not well - my back has got very lame

It began raining before noon and kept it up most of day.

Feel some better today.

Rained and blew very hard last night.

Am better today

The Father of Yen's little nephew came for him today but he did not go home. [The

boy's name was "Foon", as noted in Memoranda at end of this volume for 22 Feb.]

Rained most of day - Old buck died.

Went to school house and put up map - gave Miss Ball her warrant for Feb.

Went to town for my keys that I had forgotten.

Henry came home with many new clothes.

Mr. Miller came to settle today.

Sue and I went to Woodland on 11 a.m. train back at 3.20

Sue had dentist work done

Broadway - street car to 16th st. home at 8.20

Went to Woodland Rained about half an hour.

Inserted ad - in papers

- down to Aunt Ann's - she is easier - To Davis at 6.30 -

is to lecture at Metropolitan Theater tonight.

Home on 10.40 train. Got new man Walter Rendall to drive team in Henry's place.

Went to Aunt Anns for lunch- she is much better. Went to Woodland saw Mr Hays

- sold two - Gave Thos. Hext one. Saw Mr Herbert Coil about harvesters. Got steak -

wine for Mother &c.

Found the Harvester business in badly demoralized condition.

It turned out to be a very warm day. Boys cut wood in a.m. scraped ditch in p. m.

Got $22.00 left at Bank of Yolo for me by Eli Hays.

from Canada - they did not come.

Paul went to town with Baby and Gay.

They sent for Mother at Mr. Dopkings - and she went on 11 a.m. train. Was sick and

Saw President Harrison Secretary Rusk and Postmaster General Wannamaker. The

reception to them was grand never to be forgotten.

Toward evening Sue and I drove Don to Mr. Miller's. I engaged Fury to sew sacks for

me on the harvester at $2.00 per day - The old folks are both complaining a good

deal.

Wed 20 May 1891

Strong north wind again.

Helped cock hay before breakfast and in forenoon did more out on

knoll.

Sue and I took Soon[?] to Davis and got Yen who has just returned from

San Francisco. Yen brought Sue an elegant fan, some fruit and

confectionary

Yen drew $10.00 Got strawberries, rhubarb & lemons.

Sprinkled several times. Stopped mowing at noon - all hands bunched

hay in afternoon -

Dan Patterson came out from town with message from Mother announcing Aunt

Ann's death.

Went to Davis in morning.

Took flowers to Mr. Dopking's

Aunt Ann was buried from her home at 1.30 p.m. from church 2 p.m.

Rev. Seneca Jones preached her sermon.

There was a large attendance.

- got home at about 8 p.m.

Sue was sick and could not go.

I was re-elected Trustee.

Attended lunch to Alumni. Went to Oakland thence to San Francisco. Stopped at

Grand 150.
