Preliminary notes by transcriber:

In the Memoranda and Cash Account sections at the end of this volume are a brief

comment on the year 1891, and what amounts to an abridged version of the whole

diary. On the last Bills Payable page, the final page of the volume, is a record of colts

foaled and mares bred.

The Pierces attended Henry M. Stanley's lecture in Sacramento on 17 March.

1 May Pierce registered the death of John Le Conte, and he attended his funeral in

Berkeley on 3 May.

Aunt Ann [Dopkings or mother-in-law of Dopkings?] died 30 May in Woodland.

Pierce used the term "O.K." on June 18, the first appearance of this major

Americanism in these diaries.

Writes of taking electric car from San Francisco to Berkeley for his UC reunion.

Mentions the name "Oeste" for the first time, in connection with school meeting on 25

July 1891.

Throughout are entries about Pierce's participation in the board of the Fairfield school,

including discussions and action on construction and repair of building (22-24 Aug).

Even with no children of school age, Pierce had been active in school matters for


several years, purchasing and delivering supplies, delivering salary to teacher, being

member of the board.

Woodland county fair 3-5 Sept.

Mention of Vacas family building house opposite Methodist church.

First mention of gas engine, 11 Sept. Mentioned again at State Fair. Best wins first

prize on his gas engine, 18 Sept. Pierce sold a gas engine on the 27th Sept. He

became quite involved in gas engine business in this year. cf 2 Oct.

Birth of second son to the Pierce family, 11 Nov.

In November Pierce attended several lectures in Sacramento, including one by a

Theosophist. Also he saw Jasp. Keene's Merchant of Venice and Richard III.

Henry and Yen went to town.

Henry took Mr. Guili's roller home

Got ready to take poultry to town tomorrow

Gathered up chickens for market.

Took coop of Turkeys and one of roosters to Davis -

Sue and I went in buggy -

- took 4 rolls butter - got water pipe - trees &c - keg 8d nails.

Deposited $200 with B. F. Ligget for Mother.

Wed 14 Jan 1891

Set trees - planted potatoes on old vineyard ground - Sue and I went to Mr.

McMillans to engage poultry turkeys - shot two ducks.

Henry finished pruning


Thurs 15 Jan 1891

Began plowing summerfallow in East field.

Sent Paul for 6 hen turkeys to McMillans - he got only five 48#.

Got 19 head of hogs from LaRue's home - put them in small vineyard field.

Sprinkled a trifle -

Fri 16 Jan 1891

Sue went to Sacramento to see Dr. Gardner - she took electric bath also.

Put bacon in smokehouse

fixed wind mill -

Mrs Miller and Celia called as did some gentleman looking for poultry.

Sat 17 Jan 1891

Sue and I went on excursion train to Marysville to attend State Citrus Fair. Left Davis

11.50 reached M 2.15 left M 9.40 reached D 12.00 p.m. Dined at Presbyterian

ladies lunch rooms - Got bugg[y] & rode about town. The display was fine and the

trip enjoyable. 17 carloads of people


Sun 18 Jan 1891

Staid last night at Mother's Attended Presbyterian Church in a.m. Sue joined.

Attended Methodist church in p.m. home at 6 p.m.

Mon 19 Jan 1891

Put out trees and vines.

Began plowing orchard

Sue and I went to Davis in the afternoon. Sue signed and sent Deed to Glen Alpine to

Warren Olney 101 Sansome St. San Francisco.

We called at Mr. Hamel's but found the girls out.

Dr. Ruddock is visiting Mother.

Henry began plowing on east side of field

Paul got three more hogs home from LaRue's - we have 38 here now.

Wed 21 Jan 1891

Paul is hauling manure into front yard from creek.

Tried to get the two wild hogs in the field to kill but failed

Sue and I went to Sacramento on 11 a.m. train - took baths of Dr. Cook. Sue tried to

see Dr. Gardner but he was not in Come out at 3.05

Sat 24 Jan 1891

Went out and shot two wild hogs - hauled them in on wagon - got sow from vineyard

field - The two large ones are fine -

A young man from Canada came looking for work - hired him and he helped butcher.

Went to town got man's trunk and the poultry coop - sent 30 doz eggs G. B. A.

Quite strong north wind.

Mon 26 Jan 1891

Yen went to town last night on foot came back at 5 a.m. today.

North wind - Set new man to hauling manure and grape vines.


Went to Davis at 11. for Flora Kron and Mrs Roberts.

Took visitors to 11 a.m. train

Fixed Mother's pump and cleaned out tank.

Took red yearling bull to Davis to ship to N. Gilmore - Bull got cut on wire fence

Mr. Dopking's folks are sick.

Went to Woodland to see Aunt Ann's folks. Mother was there. Aunt Ann is bad off.

Bought Johnson's Map for school and foolscap paper.

Thurs 12 Feb 1891

Watered things in yard. Went shooting and got 7 ducks.

Went into lower field in p.m. put down straw - drove out Mr. Miller's hogs &c.

Fri 13 Feb 1891

Went to Davis with Sue -

She went to Sacramento for treatment. Fixed Mother's roof and pump -

Yen came home - brought a little China boy with him.


Joseph broke his plow.

Sat 14 Feb 1891

Strong south wind. Started boys to plowing north of barn in east field -

Old Sam mule died and was hauled out.

Worked about garden and yard

It began sprinkling about 9 a.m. and continued most of day.

Sun 15 Feb 1891

Rained hard last night and most of today

Creek is up about 1/3 full

Mon 16 Feb 1891

Rained most of night.

Joseph and I put in water pipe to carriage house

Began oiling harness and repairing fence along Hext line burned by Lee last fall.


Tues 17 Feb 1891

Boys worked on fence -

Sue and I went to town in p.m. Got keg nails rice and shoes for Henry -

Mr. W. G. Button was buried in Sacramento today - He died Sunday. Mr. Drake is

very low.

There is much sickness in the country now -

Wed 18 Feb 1891

Sue is sick today.

Went out to where boys are fencing in p.m. - shot 2 ducks

Went to Hext's -- Paid Tauzer $20.00 for plowing last spring -

Am not well - my back has got very lame

Had a bad night and am in a sad condition today.

Had another bad night.

Boys are oiling harness and fixing stables.

Sent Paul to Davis for mail and steak

It began raining before noon and kept it up most of day.

Feel some better today.

Rained and blew very hard last night.

Am better today

The Father of Yen's little nephew came for him today but he did not go home. [The

boy's name was "Foon", as noted in Memoranda at end of this volume for 22 Feb.]

Rained most of day - Old buck died.

Henry drew $30.00 and went to Sac.

Jos took team - got Yen's trunk and can neats foot oil -

Sue and I went to Davis and attend Mr. Drake's funeral.

Got school maps and posted notices for Grange meeting.

Left my keys somewhere.

Tues 24 Feb 1891

Went to school house and put up map - gave Miss Ball her warrant for Feb.

Went to town for my keys that I had forgotten.

Henry came home with many new clothes.

Wed 25 Feb 1891

Mr. Miller came to settle today.

Sue and I went to Woodland on 11 a.m. train back at 3.20

Sue had dentist work done


Looked up harvester advertisements.

Thurs 26 Feb 1891

Sue and Paul went to Sac.

Rained toward evening.

Shot 3 ducks and a cottontail.

Got sick cow from lower field to sheep barn -

Blacksmithed -

Boys chopped wood

Rained toward evening.

Expected Grange meeting but speakers did not come

Yen's friend sent Sue flowers &c.

Boys cut wood Sue went to Sacramento - missed the Dr.

Received letter from Geo. Dopking saying that Aunt Ann was very sick and if we

wanted to see her we must got at once.

Tues 3 Mar 1891

Sue and I went to Aunt Ann's -

Sue came back to Davis on train


Got rates of advertising from Mail and Democrat. Drove to Davis -

Rained while going over to Woodland.

Wed 4 Mar 1891

Sue went to Sacramento on 6.35 and I to San Francisco.

Bought overcoat. Went to San Leandro on 12 M train - to Oakland on 3.40 - off at

Broadway - street car to 16th st. home at 8.20

Went to Woodland Rained about half an hour.

Inserted ad - in papers

- down to Aunt Ann's - she is easier - To Davis at 6.30 -

is to lecture at Metropolitan Theater tonight.

Home on 10.40 train. Got new man Walter Rendall to drive team in Henry's place.

Took Henry to town $159.75

Gardened for Mother - took her to Woodland train. Went to see Mr. Swingle about

harvester.

Strong north wind

Plowed garden and vineyard.

Prince got shoe fast and had to pull one off.

Mr. Montgomery from Merritt's came look for sheep shearing.

Sat 21 Mar 1891

Went to Davis - got Prince shod.

Sold 6042# barley at 1 1/2

Bought sacks for crop at 7 1/2c.

Went to Aunt Anns for lunch- she is much better. Went to Woodland saw Mr Hays

& Mr. Bullard about selling bulls

- sold two - Gave Thos. Hext one. Saw Mr Herbert Coil about harvesters. Got steak -

wine for Mother &c.

Sue and I went to church.

Mr. Cornwall preached a very poor sermon.

Dined at Mother's - took 10# butter to B. F. L. Sold 8871# wheat for $142 1/2 to B.

Walter Rendall went to town rode Major agreeing to be back at 3 p.m. but is not here

yet.

Fixed wire fence to keep sheep from going to Mr. Russells

Planted Mangle Wurtzel beets west of vineyard and plowed potatoes.

Sue went to Sacramento on 11 a.m.


- got her red wrapper.

Drove Bismarc to Henley's and school - got orders signed -

Strong north wind

Went into field and marked out new lands on wet piece.

Have a little over 100 acres to plow yet. Helped Paul plow and gather morning glory

in garden.

Fixed squirrel poison.

Sun 29 Mar 1891

Strong north wind. Waller drew $9.20 and went to Sacramento.

Sue and I drove Mack to Davis for Mail in evening.

Joe Philleber was run over and killed by cars near Swingles today.

Went to Winters. Saw Englehart Simms York Norton and others on harvester

business.

Home at 8.15 - drove Prince in cart -

Tues 31 Mar 1891

North wind - went to plow field before breakfast.

Planted Melon and squash seeds.

Sue and I went to Davis with Mack. Planted seeds for Mother - fixed hose -

Went to field before breakfast got up horse colts.

Castrated 4 horse colts this p.m.

Thurs 2 Apr 1891

Worked about yards - got up sheep to mark, but was too lame


Drove Bismarc to Davis for mail.

Fri 3 Apr 1891

Started north on harvester business -

Called at McClellan's Hamilton's Seybolds Hawkins & Cliffords. Got to Woodland at

9.15 p.m. supper at Restaurant lodging at Exchange.

Sat 4 Apr 1891

Started north at 9 a.m.

Called at Mrs. Bummislys[?] Bourn's Hershey's Schliemans Dills and -

Got to Woodland at 5 p.m.

Saw Lowe Coil and Freeman -

Paid for business cars & clock repairing

got Hat steak and oranges.

Home to 8.10 p.m. Two new men are here tonight.

Walter Rendall quit $7.00 He sold his bed to Joe. Drove Dan to lower field to see

plow - Sue and Foon went in knoll for ride.

Yen went to town on Maj.

Mon 6 Apr 1891

Set tramp spading. Fixed plow for new hand.

Began raining about 1.30 p.m. boys had to quit - Rained hard-

Blacksmithed -

Tues 7 Apr 1891

Had Joseph mend sacks -

Went to Davis in p.m. Drew $60.00 50 for Joseph, but could not send it to Canada

as he wished -

Heard Weaver boys wanting a harvester.

Drove Don

Tramp hoeing potatoes.

Started one plow on 69 acre wet piece.

Joseph harrowed.

Harrowed beet corn and melon ground - also vineyard

Drove Don. Blacksmithed

Tramp is hoeing vineyard.

Fine day but looks like rain.

Thurs 9 Apr 1891

Tramp finished vineyard - Set him to lowering ditches for draining field.

Joseph is still harrowing -

Drove Don to lower field.

Sue and I went to Mrs. Greene's to see about Sorosis - No one at home - went to

Davis Sent $50.00 to Henry Krausekopf for Joseph.


Fri 10 Apr 1891

Rained most of forenoon and considerable in afternoon

Boys came in about 10.45 - did not work in p.m.

Blacksmithed considerable

Paul took Lottie Baby and Gay to Davis

- left Baby and Gay -

Sat 11 Apr 1891

Boys worked at scraping in dirt to fill slough in lower field.

Tramp finished digging drain ditches

Sent Paul with spring wagon to Davis took 30 doz eggs - hay fork and wagon truck

He got 4 sks flour rice & oats. - brought out Gay and Lottie.

Sun 12 Apr 1891

Sue and I went to church - were very late - heard benedictions

Went to cemetery. Took Foon to Davis to be barbered.


Looks like rain -

Mon 13 Apr 1891

Rained much of day. Paul took Flora and Lottie to Davis - left Lottie and brought out

Baby -

Joseph mended sacks. Thos did nothing

John started grade but quit on account of rain.

Blacksmithed

Tues 14 Apr 1891

John mowed front yard and fixed croquet ground.

Jos & Tom cut wood (old bridge) in the p.m. Tom Steel came with Nevada today --

tried Clara & Mabel

Larney had colt.

But Clara & Mabel in north pasture.


Wed 15 Apr 1891

Jos. & Tom work at filling up slough. John mowed yard and worked on croquet

ground.

Drove Don in p.m.

Sue went to town for mail.

Thurs 16 Apr 1891

Boys began plowing but had to quit about 10 a.m. on account of the rain.

Went to Davis with John - fixed lot at cemetery until rain made us quit - Settled with

John - Got oranges, snaps buckskin and $20.

Had lunch at Mother's - hoed some there.

Fri 17 Apr 1891

Blacksmithed some.

Sue and I went to school house in p.m. - took library books.

Went to Henley's for order but did not find him at home. Went to Davis saw Mother -

who came home on 3. p.m. train. Boys cut wood in p. m.


Sat 18 Apr 1891

Looked very much like rain today. Started at 10:30 for Woodland.

Found the Harvester business in badly demoralized condition.

Called at Aunt Ann's - she is very low - Home at 8.30

It turned out to be a very warm day. Boys cut wood in a.m. scraped ditch in p. m.

Got $22.00 left at Bank of Yolo for me by Eli Hays.

Sun 19 Apr 1891

Paul went to church. Joseph drew $5.00 and went to Sacramento to meet his friends

from Canada - they did not come.

Mon 20 Apr 1891

Paul went to town with Baby and Gay.

Drove Don to Davis took 10# butter to B. F. L 15c. Took some things to Mother.

They sent for Mother at Mr. Dopkings - and she went on 11 a.m. train. Was sick and

staid until 4 p.m. - got spuds -

Tues 21 Apr 1891

Paul cultivated vines and plowed trees. "Bick" and I had set tos.


Poisoned squirrels in creek and out north.

Sue and Fran went with me to lower field.

Wed 22 Apr 1891

Paul went to Davis with wagon.

Took Flora, Sally & Larney - left Sally -

took 3 doz eggs to B. F. L. Got wagon - fork Bartlett water wine etc.

Sue and I went to Sacramento and took baths at Dr. Cooks -

Saw Mr. Sparks about making trade for straw harvester.

Thurs 23 Apr 1891

Went to Tim Clifford's to see about trade - no go. Went to Woodland and to Aunt

Ann's - she is failing.

- home at 6 p.m.

Josephs friends came today - 3 of them


Fri 24 Apr 1891

Sue started on 6.35 train for Fresno.

Went to Mr. Swingli's Wright's and Brown's Ligget went with me.

set man at work for Mother-

Mr Sparks and Mr. LaRue were thrown from cart yesterday -

La Rue's engine broke down -

Joe and Tom are quarreling - Drove Don.

Sat 25 Apr 1891

Went in 63.5 a.m.train to San Francisco thence to San Leandro. Back to city at 5

p.m. Staid at 120 Post St

Saw President Harrison Secretary Rusk and Postmaster General Wannamaker. The

reception to them was grand never to be forgotten.

Finished first plowing summerfallow.

Sun 26 Apr 1891

Went home on 7.30 a.m. train


Am not feeling at all well.

Mr. Clark came to shear sheep -

Mon 27 Apr 1891

Started to go north. Got to Cliffords and found him away - he had gone to Davis.

Called at Cox's and Hawkins - Returned home e at 2.15 almost if not quite sick abed.

Mr. Swingli and Dave Pugh called to see harvester.

Gave Miss Ball her April order.

Began replowing summerfallow.

Tues 28 Apr 1891

Went to Mrs. Greene's Charlie went with me to Grenier's to contradict a lie of Tom

Prior's.

Went to Davis. Drew $20 of B. F. L and sent it to Sue.

Am far from well -

Went to Woodland lunched at Mr. D's- Aunt Ann is failing rapidly

Passed a sleepless night. Intended to got to Fresno on 6.35 train but was unable

- Went to Davis with Paul - took 3.30 train to Sac. 5.20 train to Lathrop.


7.00 p.m. train to Fresno - Arrived in Fresno at 12 p. m. Eva was at depot. Went to

Pleasanton where Sue was staying.

John Le Conte died yesterday.

Called Mr. William's. Got horse and buggy and drove to Hedge Row. Miss Hatch was

not at home. Went to Collin's

Sue took presents to sick girl.

Dined at Mrs Williams. Miss Gilmore called - took her home. Got medicine fruit and

confectionary for tomorrow's trip.

Sue met Miss Alpine Crane on train.

Arrived in Oakland about 11.30. Met Miss Nye at train who took us to Winsor Notch

in her carriage. Had fine apartments

Took Mrs Henderson with us to Temescal.[?]


Had Huntley to spend evening with us.

10.30. Met Wm Marshall who is coming to work for me this summer.

business - he was at Lakeport and I telegraphed him.

Williams and I straightened up north windmill in p.m.

John and I marked lambs - 53 bucks, 46 ewes -

Separated old bucks and 16 old ewes -

Paul took mules to lower field and sheep out north - got up cow and calf. Moved sow

into windmill field. Plowed morning glory.

Sue and I drove to Woodland to see Aunt Ann. She is very low.

Started early for horses - went down to creek - then to Schmeiser's Plainfield Covells

and Davis - Paul found them at LaRue's corral.

Our Chinaman went to Davis for good - but returned toward evening.

Mr. Swingli sent Dave Pugh to engage harvester for him. Telegraphed for one.

Yen came home but went away again to take Foon to San Francisco who

Went to Davis and sold George Swingli a harvester

Strong north wind. Am not at all well today.

Toward evening Sue and I drove Don to Mr. Miller's. I engaged Fury to sew sacks for

me on the harvester at $2.00 per day - The old folks are both complaining a good

deal.

Strong north wind again.

Helped cock hay before breakfast and in forenoon did more out on

knoll.

Sue and I took Soon[?] to Davis and got Yen who has just returned from

San Francisco. Yen brought Sue an elegant fan, some fruit and

confectionary

Yen drew $10.00 Got strawberries, rhubarb & lemons.
