Diary format Pierce introduced a new form of diary book this year, with one whole page for each

date. He used several of the initial alphabetized blank pages for some of the financial records of the ranch. Also he made entries on the Memoranda page (367) at the end of the diary.

The Diggs and Pierce Company On 30 of January Pierce mentions explicitly for the first time the "Diggs and Pierce Company" whose real estate activities have been reported in previous diaries, especially dealing with the Hext property. On the 30th they declared a dividend for the company. November 8th Pierce notes that Diggs sent a statement and check to account of Diggs and Pierce with Pierce.

University Farm (UC Davis)

Picnic on campus on 30 May 1908. See list of people present. On Oct 28 Wheeler gave a lecture at U. C. Farm, and on Nov 6th Judge Shields gave one. Several other references to U. C. Farm. Farmers' Institute held there in October at which Pierce gave speech. Pierce had horse operated on there on Nov 3. They removed "snag" from mare's shoulder.

Tues 7 Jan 1908 Worked in shop getting harrows ready. Jeff hauled harrows out with Lige & Beck - Went to Davis in p.m. and met P. N. Ashley by appointment. Mother and I gave right of way for irrigating canal through east field to the Ashley place - Wed 8 Jan 1908 Went to 7.25 train to meet M. Diggs - Tried to find Guy Miner to rent pasture land on Hext place.

W. D. & I went to Shorty Thomas' to settle rebate on taxes for 1907. W. W. T. owes $64.25 Went to Russell's to try to get renter for Hext land - Russell not at home - Had dinner at Edgewood - Left for return to Davis about 1.30. Cleaned out a driver's [?] stable - Sue & I went to Davis in auto - on return had a blowout - Made appointment with B. C. French for Monday in Woodland to get deed to lots 43 & 44 Diggs tract - Got coffee, rolled oats, vegetables meat etc - Guy Miner telephoned from Winters that he would take the 140 acre field in S. Attended meeting of California Fruit Growers who met to protest against the ruling of the department of Agriculture against the sulphuring of California Dried Fruit.

A committee was chosen to go to Washington, D. C. to intercede with the Secretary of Agriculture - the President and members of Congress. Col. Left a 8.40 for San Francisco. Took observation car at 10 a.m. and went "seeing San Francisco". Back soon after noon. Lunched at the Market Cafe opposite the Spreckels building - Called at the Fiske Rubber Cos office 1030 Golden Gate Ave. regarding an auto tire sent to them - Took 3.00 p.m. train for Davis - It was nearly an hour late in its arrival at Davis - Attended the joint installation of Odd Fellows and Rebecca's - - was Toastmaster.

Staid at Mother's - Dixwell staid there too - as Sue has gone to Placerville on Glen Alpine business - Jeff started teams - 2 of his & 2 of mine plowing in my 134 acre field - Sheep were moved into 135 acre field - Sat 18 Jan 1908 It rained a little last night - Dix and I went out about 10- a.m. Shorty Thomas took Dixie's wheel - which had a flat tire - Teams plowed today - Jerry plowed into water pipe and broke it near auto - I fixed it partly - Put out 5 Crimson Winter Rhubarb, 6 Horse Radish, and 25 Cabbage plants - Sheep got out of 130 acre field - put them back and took walk to plowing and around fields -

Sun 19 Jan 1908 re-Salted meat - Worked on auto some. Mose Johnson drew $2.00 - he has worked two days - Mon 20 Jan 1908 Dix not well today.

I went to Sacramento on 10.20 train. J. DiSoli going too - Got pair pants, wire cutters, Skat [?] 3 in 1. stationery books etc - Attended for short time the Chamber of Commerce meeting at hearing of Congressmen sent to look into river conditions. It began raining in afternoon - Hired new man Sam - for Choreman - It rained in night last night -

Paid Lee LaRue for turkey gobbler $3.00 Tues 21 Jan 1908 Dix sick. He walked around barefooted asking irrational questions. Sent for Dr. Bates who came and prescribed for the little man. Mose took Jerry to Davis. Sam and I finished fixing the water pipe that Jerry plowed up - Jeff Donnenwirth returned from San Francisco where he went to testify for the Schmeiser Mfg. Co - Jeff paid board bill for December $48.50 Jeff and one of his nephews went to J. Snyder's place to sit up with remains - Synder having died Saturday evening - Wed 22 Jan 1908 Jeff and man home about 9.30 Went to see about sheep - Saw Guy Miner about land rent -

The two Hindoos worked, in yard, burning brush etc in afternoon. Thurs 23 Jan 1908 Jeff went to J. Snyder's funeral back to supper - Blacksmithed some, put new tire on auto, and helped Soon pack sausage - Went into 2134 acre field about 9.30 a.m. to see if we could possibly plow. Found it too wet -

It began sprinkling about 10 a.m. and rained at intervals throughout day. Toward night the wind got into southeast and it rained hard for a while but quit about 10 p.m. Fri 24 Jan 1908 Clear in forenoon Sprinkled in p.m. Sue started to go to Mrs. F. Chiles to card club but was so late she gave it up after going to Davis She got Gardner at 4 p.m. train and took him home. I took mule team in p.m. and went to Davis with butter, eggs & empty gasoline tank Got 4 sx spuds, 100# bbl corn beef [?] from Sacramento, syrup vegetables etc. Home late Sat 25 Jan 1908 Mose Johnson quit - Took Gardner to Sacramento

Jeffs man went to Davis for load of hay - Jeff brought out choreman from Davis, also bunches of vines from the California Nursery Co - at Niles - The Red Cross Employment office sent a choreman and Jeff took his new choreman back and got the one from Sacramento - Sent for draft on San Fran to pay for grain bags @ 6 1/2 Tues 28 Jan 1908 Moved brooder house into chicken yard between to long houses - Wed 29 Jan 1908 Jeff started 4 teams this a.m. one sowing 3 harrowing - It rained a hard shower about 4.30 p.m. Jeff sowed wheat N. E. of windmill and did not finish cross-harrowing it - Sue had a Ladies' Whist Club meeting and ladies went home in rain -

Jeff went to Davis in evening. I drove to Davis in evening and attended meeting of I. O. O. F. to greet Grand Master Ogden of Oakland - Thurs 30 Jan 1908 Went to Sacramento on 10.20 train to meet M. Diggs to have annual settlement of the Diggs and Pierce Company. We declared a dividend of $2047.11 each - Deposited min [?] in D. C. Mills bank.

Had Sam Irwin [?] help fix harness in p.m. Choreman finished digging post holes for chicken yard and got posts and boards on ground - getting boards from north windmill field - Jeff Donnenwirth returned with a dunn colored horse he got of Del Grieve - Tom and I rode about among the sheep - Sat 1 Feb 1908 Soon went to Chinese New Year at Davis. I went to Woodland on lat 10.30 train - stopped at Julian. Attended Odd Fellows meeting at which Grand Master Ogden was present - They had a banquet - It began raining last night about 8 p.m. and has rained almost ever since

Just at night Sue and I rode over to J. Maier's place. He is going to finish putting in the lots 7 & 8 Diggs tract. Mon 24 Feb 1908 John Maier came for some seed barley - got 23 sks weighing [figure not given.] Tinkered about home - went over to Maier's place about 11 a.m. He has not yet started plowing - is to start this p.m. Began resetting vines in vineyard on knoll.

Tues 25 Feb 1908 Marked lambs - have about 410 Set out vines on knoll. Am short of vines for the job. Wed 26 Feb 1908 Put out 10 Malaga vines Went to see Shorty Thomas about seeding the 80 north of him. He had agreed to do it but is backing out - Sue went to Whist Club at Mrs. Read's. My automobile balked when near Mr. Ed Bullard's - Phoned in to E. W. Tues 14 Apr 1908 Put two Hindoos to hauling gravel for headgate on Fairfield ditch at Greene branch and filling in at crossings - They hauled (8) sacks cement to cement workers at Greene crossing - Spent considerable time at cement workers - had them get tank of water to finish another batch. Sue and I went to town took 66 squares honey to Haag @ 15c. Ordered cement to finish culverts also iron grooves for headgate.

Left for Melrose about 6.40 p.m. Gardner injured his right arm while trying to start auto on the ferry - Called in Dr. K. B Smith Frankie's physician - Wed 6 May 1908 Will, Rose, the children and self went, via Key Route to see incoming fleet, intending to go to Goat Island. The boats did not run and our trip was a failure - Went to Oakland got refreshments and went out to Cousin Frankie's. Sue and I went to San Francisco and out to Mrs. Chandler's.

Misses Kitty and Mabel went with us to Metcalf-Evans reception at Fairmount Hotel - It was a fearful jam It sprinkled a little as we left the Fairmount - Sixteen battleships and attendant cruisers, torpedo boats etc came in from cruise from Hampton Roads - joining the Pacific fleet making about 45 ships - Thurs 7 May 1908 I left before breakfast for Melrose. Got auto and took it over to Thos B. Jeffery's - Gardner going with me - Got auto going - Sue, G. and self got away, late, for Melrose - waited an hour and a quarter at ferry - got out to Frankie's about 10 p.m. Gardner & I saw the big parade from a stand on Van Ness Avenue. Sun 30 Aug 1908 Frightful north wind - Fully two thirds of remaining almonds are on the ground - Mon 31 Aug 1908 Pleasant day. Went to Sacramento at 10.25 with armature and boxes of motor- Had repairing done through Mr. Schneider and got out on 6.20 train

Lee LaRue rode out with me - Moved Monshee into east orchard. Tues 1 Sept 1908 Went to town in evening - got 50 almond sax - melons meat etc - My storage battery gave out on me and when near Jeff Donnenwirth's quit - I telephone for help from Thomas' and Gardner and Fred came for me - Wed 2 Sept 1908 Gardner went to town in p.m with Lady and buggy - Got 6 batteries from Cranston's etc - Arthur Foster and M [?] Lee LaRue & Jake called today to see almond machine - Thurs 3 Sept 1908 Went to 12.05 for Sue who came from cousin Frankie's Rose Kohl came with her -

Fred took load, 100 sx Nonpareil almonds to town - Fri 4 Sept 1908 Took Sue and Rose to 7.25 Sacto train en route to State Fair. Put my motor into place in p.m. and it did not work at all. It heated and stopped. Sacked hard shell almonds 18 sx, ran screenings through fanning mill etc.

Wed 16 Sept 1908 Fred took 100 sx almonds to Davis. (NePlus). Went to Davis to meet M. Diggs, who had - Thoms and two relatives from Grand Island. Home about 1 p.m. Dismissed Hindoos as Mrs. Greene failed to send load of almonds as she had said she would. Tom too 20 Peerless and the Hindoos to Davis.

Dix went to Davis with me and came home with Tom. Thurs 17 Sept 1908 Picked up odds and ends Cleaned up packing house - Crushed about 100 sx barley, putting it in horse barn. Sun 4 Oct 1908 Sue went to Christian Science Church - Will and I went to Granada and Half Moon Bay and I bought three lots - one business for $2500. Two residence for 700, and 475 respectively - Home at 7 p.m. Mon 5 Oct 1908 Sue and I spent day looking-up automobiles - had demonstration in Stoddard Dayton Finally got back to T. B. Jefferys' and saw their 1909 car - Took matter of trade under advisement Tues 6 Oct 1908

Went to city with Sue and Pierce Porter - Made trade of auto, or rather Sue did. I went to morning session of Trans Mississippi Congress - Went to T. B. J's at 12.30 Men had begun work on new car - It is to have many modern attachments - glass, Jones Speedometer, Gabriel Horn, air tank - tire irons - extra tire and two extra inner tubes etc. All lunched with Mr. Harvey at the "Bismark."

Sun 11 Oct 1908 Sue and I went to Davis to see Mother who is not as well as usual. Mon 12 Oct 1908 Fred is sowing summerfall (sic) next to Maier's Monshe[e] took load of barley to Fred. Mr. Keith, a friend of the Mr. Walker who bought a piece of land in N. W. cor Diggs tract was here to look over land. I brought him out and took him back. Took 54 squares honey for Gardner to Davis 24 Anderson 30 Hoag. Got my overcoat and a robe, sent by Harvey by express Tues 13 Oct 1908 Monshe[e] moved 24 sx hardshell almonds from creek barn to packing house. Monshe [Pierce is spelling the name with one "e"for a while now] and I burned straw piles in packing-house yard.

Thurs 15 Oct 1908 Was quite sick last night - late about getting up this a.m. Attended Realty men' meeting in a.m. and again the general meeting at Chamber of Commerce rooms in p.m. Saw M. Diggs and Mr. Walker of NonPareil Got my Panama hat, some stationery, and a Gillette safety razor for Gardner. Out at 5.05 train Mr. P. N. Ashley was aboard. Sue went to Ladies' Aid meeting at Mrs Albert Ross'. Auto ran out of gas and electricity and I was hung up at my gate.

Mother was practically unconscious all day. - was wholly so from about noon or before when she refuse to take further nourishment. Sun 25 Oct 1908 Mother still lingers unconscious and apparently complaining at times - Mon 26 Oct 1908 Mother breathed her last at 2.30 this a.m.

Telephoned for Mr. Kitto and he came before 6 a.m. Sue, Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. Wright & Mrs. Pugh went to Woodland with me - engaged casket - got flowers [?] etc. Tues 27 Oct 1908 Mother's funeral was held at 2 p.m. from her late residence in Davis - Attendance was large - Floral gifts were exquisite May Bracken, the girl and nurse left - Family went home. Rain .23 Sun 22 Nov 1908 Cleaned up auto and went to Brow's trying to get bill for rent - Mon 23 Nov 1908 Rained last night .25 Fred took 25 turkies (sic) to Davis - wt 24 = 248# one shot in tree - Took "Silvertail" filley (sic) to Luft for hoof treatment -

Left auto tire chains with Luft for lengthening. Home at 12 M. Killed and dress five turkies (sic) - Sue, Gardner & I went to Davis to attend "Farm Commission" session at State Farm. Made speech on reforms demanded. Met M. Diggs and discussed the renting of the 140 acre field to W. C. Russell - Sent turkeys by express to Mrs. H. A. Shelton, Marion Atwood and Mrs. Lorenz - Got tank of coal oil - and box of apples - Tues 24 Nov 1908 Sue, Gardner, Dixwell and self left in auto 1909 Rambler at 8.15 a.m. for Cousin Frankie Porter's at Fruitvale. The roads are muddy and in bad condition in many places We went to Benicia and got to wharf just in time to see the ferry boat Solano leave for

Port Costa and had to wait an hour and a quarter. The road out of Port Costa is very hilly in San Pablo - On way over the hill the water pipe over engine parted and w lost the water - Filled up at a market on San Pablo Ave. and reached Frankie's about 6.20 p.m. We took two tukeys, a roll of butter and 3 doz eggs - Wed 25 Nov 1908

Rained quite hard this forenoon. Gardner and I took auto to city via creek route. Bay was rough. Stopped raining about 11 a.m. Gardner & I shopped some and returned at 6 p.m. We took mantle lamp - back to Du Bose at 73 Webster St for exchange Du B was not in - left lamp - Rained at home.

Hindoos did not work. Thurs 26 Nov 1908 Beautiful day. Strolled about hills this a.m. Heavy frost - Frankie's Thanksgiving dinner was very fine - Will and I tramped over hills to east of town. Sue, Gardner, Frankie Will and myself "Ye Liberty" Theater Oakland, 13th & Broadway and witnessed production of David Harum. It was well staged - Sue and Frankie drove Frankie's "Thomas flyer", the rest of us went on street cars - Frosty and north wind at home. Fri 27 Nov 1908

Gardner and I went to City for auto Called on Du Bose about lamp - He is to forward one later. Took auto to Fruitvale - Sue and Frankie had gone riding - so took Rose and Mildred to Fruitvale, then out 14th St - All attended Musical at Mrs [name not given] home in Melrose, going in auto. Called for Mrs Indig, at Allendale and took her home after entertainment. Program good -

Auto not doing well as throttle and spark lever go together. North wind at home. Sat 28 Nov 1908 Gardner and I took auto to San Francisco for adjustment - Bought shirts etc Left for Fruitdale at 3.20 No one at home so Gardner and I took run to and through Berkeley, Claremont etc. Rose attended musical and dance by her church (Catholic) people.

Sun 29 Nov 1908 We left for home in auto at 8.10. Will went with us to Richmond street car line terminus. Near Pinole while trying to pass a buggy we ran into a miry place up to axle. Three Italians near by helped us out after half or three quarters of an hour work - We reached Port Costa at 11.20 transferred soon after - At Benicia got 5 gals. gasoline At Suisun got 2 qts oil - Went via Vacaville and reached home at 4.45 - Mon 30 Nov 1908 Set Hindoos to burning brush in west orchard - Sue and I went to Sacramento to attend session of Farm Life Commission appointed by President Roosevelt. Spoke in p.m.

Lunched with Mrs. Walton and Mrs. Smith of Yuba City. Got shoes fixed for Sue and had suit pressed - Out on 5.05 train Tues 1 Dec 1908 W. C. Russell is the to farm the 160 acres in S. W. cor. north of road in Diggs tract.

Went to Davis - enroute (sic) to Sacramento, but getting letter from M. Diggs that he was out of town I went to Woodland instead - Sue went to Sacramento - Paid city taxes - Wed 2 Dec 1908 Fred began plowing ditches in east field - Went to Sacramento on 12.05 out at 5.05 Saw M Diggs.

Thurs 3 Dec 1908 Went to field. Donnenwirth's and Sander's - Hired or rather contracted for a team of Jeff to help put in winter grain. Sue went to Ladies Aid at Mrs. Ellsworth's Blacksmithed and cut up meat in p.m. Thurs 17 Dec 1908 Gardner took Sue and Dixwell to Davis in auto for 10.20 train en-route to Sacramento. Later he cleaned auto up and went to Davis again for folks who came on 5.05 train Very cold and foggy in a.m. Fred & I went around land south and east of slough 180 acres -

All plowed on 34 acre piece Fred and I marked out the 60 acre piece and took 4th plow off his gang - Fri 18 Dec 1908 Cold and foggy Thermometer this 5.30 a.m. registered 22 degrees. The frost was the heaviest I ever saw in California. The pepper trees and wire fences were beautiful. Frost was heavy at noon in shady places and in well protected spots frost did not disappear today. Finished up 34 acre piece at noon with Campbell teams and have all on 60 acre piece - Frank Campbell called today Last day of school for Dixwell. He spoke "An old Christmas stocking." Charley Campbell went home today and his men came in at about 4 p.m. Had fine dinner - Was at vineyard and helped set out grape vines - Sat 26 Dec 1908 Foggy Harry broke his plow - fixed lever guide - Went to nursery - engaged 265 more rooted vines and 2 Wickson plum trees - Hugh got nursery stock in p.m. Will, Rose, Mildred and Dixwell went with me to Woodland in p.m. - got battery from Dahler films for camera etc. Will, Frankie, Sue & I attended 500 Club meet at Mrs. Wilbur's. Mrs. W. D. Read went with us - We got stuck, for a time, in a mudhole at corner south of Mrs. Read's. They had five tables and a nice time.

Gardner and I went to Woodland in auto in afternoon. Met two men who want to buy a lot in the Diggs tract. Think I can sell them lot 29. Telephoned to M. Diggs at Yuba City regarding the sale expense 45c. Returned by way of Davis Frankie had Dr. Gallian out to see Pierce, he diagnoses the case as scarletina. Wed 30 Dec 1908 Went to Woodland in auto Gardner going too.

Sold lot 29 to Mr. Weste & Son for $11800. They paid $600 down and gave mortgage for balance at 6 % interest net - Home via Davis - Campbell's teams finished plowing in northeast corner - Thurs 31 Dec 1908 Campbell's teams went home - Hugh left for a vacation. Gardner went to town with mule team taking Hugh, Harry, a driver I discharged and two empty gasoline tanks - He brought back a tank of gasoline and a sixteen foot water trough ordered from Cranston - Memoranda Sprinkled Mch 3d, next April 21st vegetation suffering - May 15th only a few light showers during last eight weeks - Jan 1st 1909 Rainfall to date has been light about 4 inches.
