I am incredibly proud of the spiritual services that the Reverend Robin Hatzenbuehler, Reverend Julie McKenna, Dina Smith, our Chapel Committee and a host of volunteers provide for our residents and staff on a daily basis. While only one of many dimensions of wellness we find to be integral to the Trezevant experience, our spiritual services set us apart and makes us truly special. I have always felt that spiritual programming done well demands appropriate space. Chapels and churches are special places for a reason; the work done in them is sacred, and so these spaces must balance many things well – function, reverence, security, seriousness, comfort, peace. Our St. Edward Chapel clearly maintains that appropriate balance and it serves as a wonderfully spiritual space. But there has always been a need to offer similar space closer to our healthcare residents, who may be less able to make the journey toour chapel. Thankfully, through the kindness shown by those who fund the Trezevant Foundation, we have been able to realize the repurposing of our third-floor all-purpose room in the Allen Morgan Center into the spiritual space that will finally serve our least mobile residents. We now have a second chapel, thoughtfully designed, bright and reverent, taking cues from St. Edward Chapel and continuing its rich tradition. Our spiritual experiences are deeply personal, yet through our embrace of the spiritual approach we are better connected; it is part and parcel to the joy of living at Trezevant. Thank you for your gifts that allow us to increase that joy!

It is that time of year when foun-dation directors are scrambling around to determine how many givers they had and how much money was raised in the previ-ous year. In my four years in this position I have been privileged to be a part of a very philanthropic community and have always had the good fortune to be reporting positive numbers. This year isno exception. The Trezevant Foundation became the beneficiary of a re-markable total of $408,649 in gifts in 2017. That is absolutely amazing considering our somewhat small tent of potential donors, and this total includes a solid participation rate of 83% by our residents. Also amazing is the $180,000 in estate gifts included in that figure from E. H. Little Society members who died during the year and are greatly missed within our community. These wise individuals under-stood the importance of a legacy gift to ensure the stability of the
mission of the Trezevant Founda-tion against the ups and downs of personal giving. We knew them, and the memory of them and their legacy remain with us. In case you might be asking why estate gifts are vital to a community such as Trezevant, just turn to the cover story in this magazine about the transformation of space in the Allen Morgan Center to create the newly completed Little Chapel for residents of our healthcare facili-ties. This would hardly have been possible without gifts by our late resident Mary Minor to the Foun-dation and the St. Edward Chapel, and the dedication of this space will reflect our deep appreciation of her generosity. We at Trezevant are deeply indebted to those who take time to think in the present of what they can make possible in the future. My thanks to you all who help to make these gifts possible on a daily basis.

I’ve come to view my work here at Trezevant as that of a midwife – helping to birth new growth of the spirit. The newest midwifery is that of birthing a new chapel for the Allen Morgan Center. What a thrill it is to watch and to participate in this process! So far the delivery has in-volved a renovated space on the third floor of Allen Morgan Center thanks to the work of Brian Willmarth, George Perry, and crew; a beautiful altar craft-ed by artist Brian Russell of truly international fame; and a won-derful piano gifted by Manor resident Nancy Morris in mem-ory of her beloved husband Bill. But there is more to come that is still in the works: An ambo (combination pulpit and lectern) and a prayer bowl both crafted by Brian Russell and a stained glass window replicating the St. Edward Chapel cross designed and crafted by Suzy Hendrix of Rainbow Studio. As with all newborns, a name was needed. Drum roll please: The Little Chapel!Yes, the space is small though the Spirit within it is large. But that is not the meaning of “Lit-tle” here. Rather it is for a man

whose largess and significance to the Trezevant community is large – Edward Little. Ed Little was the benefac-tor whose generosity was the foundation of our beginning but whose own name was not recog-nized. Instead, as he had done in other cases of his generosity, we were named Trezevant to hon-or his wife, Suzanne Trezevant Little. Through the years we have tried to do some balancing of the name by naming our Chapel St. Edward and our store The Little Store. We continue that with the name for our New Room for the Spirit, The Little Chapel. But equally as important, this name extends the continu-ity between St. Edward Chapel and The Little Chapel that we have set as a goal. This continu-ity is recognized not only in the name but also in the Spirit of both places. In fact, one addi-tional continuity is that we take the blessed elements from St. Edward’s Eucharist over to The Little Chapel twice a month for Holy Communion there. The point is that we are all one in Spirit here; one in significance to God, all of us made in God’s image.
One last point I’d like to make is the importance of the beauty of both chapels – one reason we again enlisted the talent of artist Brian Russell. It comes from a quote that I love by (and quoted by) Thomas Troeger: “When the church neglects beauty, it risks diminishing the sense of the numinous and holy so that it becomes less and less a com-munity that celebrates the Spirit of God moving in, around, and through its gathered members. It loses its ability to be an alter-native way of being and living to the utilitarianism that prevails in our culture: ‘What may be most missing in this highly techno-logical world of ours is beauty. We value efficiency instead. We want functionalism over art . . . A loss of beauty may be the clearest sign we have that we have lost our way to God. Without beau-ty we miss the glory of the face of God in the here and now.’” There will be a grand cele-bration of The Little Chapel when it is totally complete. Stay tuned for details! With many, many thanks for the generosity of those whose gifts made The Little Chapel possible, especially Mary Minor of blessed memory!
Meet our BOARDEstella Mayhue Greer, Chair
Estella grew up in Memphis, attending Booker T. Washington High School and went on to get a degree
in communications and public relations at Memphis State University. She began her career in healthcare
working in admissions at Methodist Hospital while she was attending school but, after completing an
internship at The Med, she was offered a permanent position there becoming the manager of community
events and media relations. The highlight of her time there came in 1986 when she planned the first Mar-
tin Luther King birthday celebration sponsored by The Med and the AFL-CIO and which was covered by
all three national TV networks.
Estella returned to Methodist Hospital in community relations for a few years, followed by a short ser-
vice in the Hackett administration, receiving a masters degree in organizational communications, several
years of teaching at the University of Memphis and Christian Brothers University, and owning a boutique
public relations agency. While owning her PR firm she did work for healthcare organizations and had the
privilege of working on the gubernatorial campaign of Don Sundquist.
Twenty one and a half years ago she found her home when she went to work at the Mid-South Food
Bank. In 2011, after the retirement of her predecessor, she became the president and CEO of this orga-
nization which works to meet the needs of the many thousands of food insecure individuals in our area.
Estelle commented that, “Until she found the Food Bank, she had a maximum shelf life of three to four
years in a job.” There she found her passion, a basic need to take care of seniors and children.
Estella is married to Dr. Joe Greer, a practicing dentist. They have two sons and a daughter who all live
in Memphis and have provided them with six grandchildren. Through the years, they and their family
have loved snow skiing at Lake Tahoe, Whistlers in Canada, and Vail, CO.
She has certainly found her place on the Trezevant board and we are fortunate to have her here.
It might be said that Jed Drei-fus was predestined to live at Trezevant. Ironically, Jed’s apartment sits on the very same spot of his bedroom as a child, located in his parents’ former home at 3435 Waynoka Ave. He remembers his mother’s concern for their neighborhood when the original Trezevant construction began on Highland in 1975. Thirty five years later, in 2010, Jed moved into his new apart-ment in The Place at Trezevant. Whether it was destiny or good luck, Jed feels extremely fortu-nate to be living here. Though he was born in Detroit, Jed’s family moved to Memphis when he was sev-en years old. He has spent his entire adult life here and actively continues to support the city that he is proud to claim. His early schooling began at Snowden Elementary and Pentecost Gar-rison which was close enough to ride his bicycle on some days. He later went away to The Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut and after gradua-tion he turned to Cambridge, Massachusetts and Harvard University for his college degree and MBA. There he met and later mar-ried his wife, Jeanne Dinsmore who was studying for an under-graduate degree at Radcliffe at the same time. Together, they
the influence of his mother. As he became acutely aware of the poor educational opportunities for many in Memphis public schools, he began a search for students who might attend the summer programs available at his former prep school. Although he was unable to recruit qualified students at the time, the experi-ence introduced him to Frances Hooks, a guidance counselor at Carver High School and her husband, Dr. Ben Hooks who became close friends. “Ben had earned his law degree at the Uni-versity of Chicago and was one of the brightest people that I had ever met. Our friendship led to his officiating at our daughter’s 1984 wedding on Long Island at her request.” In l968, with the assassina-tion of Dr. Martin Luther King, the city was frightened and realized the need to bring our citizens together. Frances Hooks and Jed enlisted over a hundred willing volunteers to work with the senior classes at Carver High School and hold discussions on their college options, available jobs, and military opportuni-ties. Through their efforts, one student from Carver High School was eventually accept-ed in the summer program at Phillips Exeter in Exeter, New Hampshire. The project began to grow until fifteen local stu-
Our Storiescame to Memphis in 1952 where he entered his father’s growing business, Dreifus Jewelry. Un-der his direction, the company grew to 19 stores within a 200 miles radius around Memphis. He once calculated that he spent 88,000 hours on the job and decided that it was time to sell and retire. Jed and Jeanne had trav-eled widely but only during the summertime or holiday breaks until 1987 because his business and her work at the University of Memphis in Human Service Co-operation prevented lengthy absences. Now, the world was theirs to explore full time and that they did, covering an esti-mated fifty-two countries. In all of these travels he claims without hesitation that his favorite mem-ories were hiking the Himalayan Mountains in Nepal and viewing the animals in Africa. The couple lived in the High-land area of Memphis and later bought a home on Princeton Road in 1954 where they lived until Jeanne’s tragic death from ovarian cancer in 2009. It was only one day before their 59th anniversary. Jed is a distinguished soft-spoken gentleman, kind and gentle but strong in his determi-nation to make things right, and community service has always been a part of his life through

dents from Carver, Melrose and North Side attended summer programs at Eastern preparatory schools. This quality educa-tional experience would open a whole new world to struggling students and inspire greater academic accomplishments here in Memphis. Many of our city’s youth who might never before have been on a plane nor ven-tured out of Memphis, now met others students from all over the world. The program continued at this level until 1995 at which time it was adopted by Carol Barnett through the Downtown Rotary where it expanded to over one hundred students. It is now an independent non-profit REACH Memphis celebrating its 50th anniversary soon.
Jed also joined Ben Hooks and others in organizing a monthly breakfast meeting with leaders from both the Afri-can-American and the white communities. Ministers, newspa-per editors, bank presidents and politicians, outstanding leaders in our city, came together to get to know and understand each other. Their conversations were often off the record followed by a pertinent editorial in the local newspapers.
Jed served on the board of LeMoyne-Owen College for nineteen years, two of them as chairmen. He has been a pioneer in developing many projects and continues to contribute his part at Trezevant by working with the in-house scholarship pro-gram, which helps with the cost of higher education and voca-tional training for its employees. Inspired by his own adult edu-cational experience at Rhodes College, Jed instigated an on-go-ing series of lectures on current affairs by Rhodes faculty mem-bers right here on our campus. After his retirement, Jed became interested in film pho-tography and had a number of shows including three at the Botanic Garden. Sadly, he could never convert to the industry’s new digital system and gave up this fascinating hobby. Jed has been a faithful member of Temple Israel since moving to Memphis. He and Jeanne have four children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He proudly states that they all have higher degrees as a lawyer, architect, teacher and physician. Since they live in Maine, Massachusetts,
North Carolina and California, he has enjoyed visiting them, especially in the New York area where he keeps current on the theaters and museums. With none of his family living in Memphis, Jed has found a partner here on campus in Elaine Colmer, who shares the joy of his many activities. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious and spreads to those around her. Together, they hear the Mem-phis Symphony Orchestra, Iris in Germantown, and Concerts International. Side by side, they experience the theatrical series at Theater Memphis and Playhouse on the Square. They never miss the annual Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina and they always participate with their many friends here at Trezevant in our everyday activities. They are an inspiration and an asset wherever they go.

Who would have thought back in 1980, when the Allen Morgan Center was built, that there would be a need for a full scale chapel which would serve twenty to thirty residents each Sun-day? Well, the time has arrived and the Little Chapel is in the process of being completed on the third floor, thanks to the generosity of Mary Minor and involved residents who saw a need and helped to address it through the Trezevant Foundation. At the east end of the Allen Morgan Center, a former parlor and office of the Rev. Julie McK-enna has been converted into a chapel and quiet place for meditation which will be able to serve thirty five attendees. Brian Russell, the artist who created the furnishings for the St. Edward Chapel will repeat the theme in the new altar, ambo, and prayer bowl, an alternative to a bap-tismal font in which residents or family mem-bers can deposit requests for prayers to be said at the next service. There will be a stained glass window, designed by Rainbow Studio, which will replicate the theme of the glass and metal
cross in the St. Edward Chapel. An entire wall of storage cabinets has been added to the north side of the room to accommodate current and future needs. The wood floor has enhanced the acoustics to the point that, so far, there has been no need for a sound system. The open porch outside the chapel will continue to be available for warm weather enjoyment. An antique Chickering spinet has been lovingly donated by Nancy Morris in memory of her husband Bill. She was so thrilled to find a perfect home for the piano which had moved with them around the country for years, but which didn’t really have an appropriate place in their new apartment. Since Bill had attended some of the services while in the AMC, she knew what an important need the chapel was serving and was happy to make the gift. The great need for the chapel first arose about ten years ago when our late, great, resident Lou Pate Jones was serving as altar guild and the Sunday services were being held at the Allen Morgan Center twice a month by two Episcopal

priests, in resident dining rooms on the first and third floors. When the Rev. Robin Hatzenbue-hler arrived soon after, she alternated at these services with the Rev. Bill Fry until she found the Rev. Deacon Drew Woodruff who took the second Sunday duties. Lou Jones and Gloria Carter would attend both the AMC services and the morning services in St. Edward Chapel, always remembering to take over the lectionary leaflets to the later service. Gloria would go from room to room asking residents if they would like to attend the service, and she would accompany them to, and return them from, the service. After Lou retired, the late June Wilcox and other vol-unteers took over her duties as Lou continued to attend the services and Gloria continued to help others to attend. For the last several years, we have been fortunate to have four ordained clergy members alternating weekly to perform a worship service or a deacon’s mass, a service where the consecrat-ed elements are brought from the St. Edward Chapel and allow for a slightly shorter liturgy.
These very generous clergy members are the Rev. Bill Fry, Rev. Dr. Ben Bledsoe, the Rev. Deacon Drew Woodruff, and Rev. Dr. Wal-ter Mischke. The fifth Sundays will now be taken by Linda Douty Mischke, Spiritual Director, and she will also be serving on the Chapel Committee as a liaison between the Little Chapel and St. Edward. There contin-ues to be a need for able volunteers who can read the lessons and serve as Lay Eucharistic Ministers to the congregation. All residents who are able, can be brought to the services by request and all family members are wel-come to attend. A worship service is held every Sunday at 3 p.m. with Eucharist on the first and third Sundays and a devotional is held every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Robin Hatzenbuehler. A proper dedication will be held around the Easter season for this, the latest gift to Trezevant.

Five Things I LOVERobin Swanson
I LOVE to see the relationship between Walter and Linda Mischke when they work as a team pricing Little Store inventory on Monday afternoons.I LOVE to hear Helen Jabbour share how it thrilled her to be given a box of old, stained and wrinkled lace, donated to Dottie Digs, for sorting and cleaning.I LOVE to hear how happy a Little Store customer is when we have everything on their shopping list.I LOVE to tell the story behind a Dottie’s treasure to its new owner.I LOVE being part of a community that works, laughs, and encourages together.
