The beach in Bali is not all about panoramic

sunset scenery for tourism destination, there are some traditional fishing villages as well, such as Kedonganan village in Jimbaran. It is one of the island’s busiest traditional fishing ports and a major supplier for seafood restaurants along the Jimbaran beach.

Feel the Kedonganan village’s authentic atmosphere in the morning, where you will be greeted with colorful sight of traditional fishing boats called ‘Jukung’, each powered by an outboard engine and served by a crew of 4-6 fishermen. There are hundreds of them,

moored along the shore and in the shallow waters, ready to unload their cargo of fresh fish of various sizes. The stark contrast of bright-colored hull and blue sea water with blue sky or golden dawn on the backdrop provide a great sight to be captured either by a smartphone or high-tech camera.

There is also a big fish market north of the villages filled with traders waiting to bid for the newly arrived fish. You can buy fresh sea products here with reasonable prices and have it grilled straight away by professional cooks stationed around the market.

“Between passion and art, Yoga Raharja’s deep perspective in photography is not one to be taken lightly. For him, it is a way to balancing life. “

LIFE IN BALANCE ACCORDING TO YOGA RAHARJA

61TRAVELER

Born and raised in Semarang, Yoga Raharja

decided to move to Bali in 1995. The beauty of Balinese art has pumped up his artistic passion. He started by producing black & white sketch before his friend brought him a small pocket camera.

It was in late 2005 that Yoga began his journey in the world of photography. The process of learning leads him into a more specific genre; human interest and cultural, although he still kept his wildest dream to be a war photographer someday in the future.

Yoga Raharja already did several photos exhibitions around Indonesia and abroad—including a solo exhibition in Sapporo, Japan. He also has achieved several prestigious photography awards in his career such as 1st place trophy of Indonesian president photography competition in 2013 and two-times 1st place winner of black & white photo contest organized by Harris hotels in Bali.

According to Yoga Raharja, photography is something that makes life into balance. He compares a life without art with ‘living in a small, dark box with thin air’.

TRIP

“Ever imagine yourself soaring effortlessly above the ocean or dive in and out of the sea like a dolphin? Flyboard will give

you sensation of having power beyond ordinary human.”

Basically a rotatable platform attached to a long hose and a

hydro jet that comes from a 200 pk connected Jet-Ski, Flyboard can lift the rider 30 feet out of the water or take them down headlong beneath the water for a few second before gloriously emerging. The control of Flyboard is actually easier than you think; approximately it only takes 5 minutes to start flying and 15 minutes to get the grip of basic control and movement.

One of the places to do this fascinating activity is at Pandawa Marine Adventures, Tanjung Benoa, they have professional instructor and sufficient equipment to let you feel what it’s like to be a superhero for a few moments. The experience will stay on your memory for a long time, satisfaction guaranteed!

PURA SAKENAN

“Sets on the Northwest part of Serangan village, Pura Sakenan is an important temple that

has been appointed as one of cultural tourist destinations in Bali.“

Take your journey to the coast South of Bali and

visit Serangan, or famously known as the ‘Turtle Island’. In this area, you can visit Pura Sakenan, one of the most visited temples for religious purposes on Bali’s Southern side. The temple is comprised by two main

areas, namely Sakenan Temple on the Eastern side and Dalem Sakenan Temple on the West.

Sakenan is a temple once famous for its unique feature of pilgrimages during the 210-day ‘piodalan’—or temple

anniversary celebrations. In the procession, Hindu devotees travel to Serangan Island on foot or by traditional wooden boats in order to reach the temple. The reclamation back in the 90’s has changed the natural landscape of the island and made the

pilgrimage, especially travelling by wooden boat, impossible to do. Nowadays, Sakenan can easily accessed by vehicle through a 100m bridge and features beautiful panorama of sea, rows of hills and Nusa Dua white sandy beach.

“The evergreen wonder of Ubud has many historical sites waiting to be explored. One of

them is Pura Gunung Lebah at Tjampuhan, just 1,5 kilometer from Ubud central market. ”

PURA GUNUNG LEBAH

66 TRAVELER

Located on a beautiful valley where two rivers

adjoined together, Pura Gunung Lebah is a historical Balinese temple that is often related with the birth of Ubud region. Rest atop a valley overlooking Tjampuhan area, the temple is beautifully decorated by red and gold color surrounded by green forest. Just below the valley, two rivers, Cerik and Wos, join together and flow naturally across the lush forest.

Historical research shows that Pura Gunung Lebah was built around 8th century by High Priest

Rsi Markendya. It is said that during his journey towards Mount Agung, Rsi Markendya was captivated by Tjampuhan valley scenery along the way and built a temple to honor its beauty. After he left, some of his followers decided to permanently settle on the area. They slowly grew in numbers and develop their first settlement by exploring the forest. Later they learned that the forest was rich with medical herbs and plants, so they named the area ‘Ubad’, or ‘medicine’. It was later become the Ubud we know and love until now.

BIKING 101: THE ART OF DRIVING MOTORCYCLE IN BALI

Driving motorcycle in Bali is fun and thrilling. It also can get you to your destination faster than bus or cars. But for safety reason, there are rules and basic

regulation you have to know before you turn that handlebar. Here are some of the essential driving tips for you who crave for some two-wheel adventure in the

island. Drive safe!

WEAR A HELMETThis one is not for bargain. Some unpleasant things can happen if you drive around your bike without helmet, such as 1.) The police will chase you down,

2.) Even a small accident can be fatal.

CHECK THE BIKE & EQUIPMENTEssential number two is as important. Before you rent, check that every aspect

of the bike is still functioning normally, from the headlight, signals, horn, brake, wheel, etc. Don’t forget the raincoat especially in unpredictable monsoon season!

DIFFERENT DRIVING STANCELast but not least, especially for you who hail from Europe and United States,

the driving stance in Indonesia is different. Flip your stance, as here, motorcycle drives on the left lane, so make sure you get yourself used to the difference before

you stroll down the road.
