Farmer, 75, of Arenzville, IL received his last call to

the bullpen from his heav-

enly father on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Passa-

vant Area Hospital in Jack-sonville, IL.

Gene was born February 3,

1937 to Harold Edward and Helen Louise Long Farmer.

He married Linda Sue Wade on August 22, 1962 at

Florence United Methodist Church in Florence, IL and she survives. Gene is also survived by his

son, Lynn (wife Rachel) Farmer of Mattoon; his daughter Vicki (husband, Jim) Lynn of

Arenzville; four grandchildren, Amanda Marie and Megan Louise Lynn of Arenzville and Rhett

Austin and Kelsey Addison Farmer of Mattoon; a brother, Gerald Farmer of Ashland; and several

nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death

by his parents; a brother, Harold “Red” Farmer (surviving wife, Donna of Jacksonville); two

sisters, Evelyn Allen (surviving husband, Harold of Ashland) and Virginia Watkins (surviving

husband, Ray of Petersburg); and a sister-in-law, Betty Farmer.

Gene graduated from Ashland High School in

1954. He attended Illinois College in Jacksonville where he earned his teaching degree in 1958

and participated in a variety of collegiate sports. With his participation in football, baseball and

basketball, he was named team captain for all three teams during his senior year at IC. In

1986, he was inducted into the Illinois College Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of his

achievements in athletics at the college.

Gene began his teaching career at Chandlerville High School from 1958-1960 before he joined

the US Army in 1960, where he played baseball until his discharge in 1962. It was then that

Gene was hired by Triopia Schools and taught there until his retirement. During his tenure,

Gene was assistant football coach under Don Kemp where they coached to a Class 1A State

Football Championship and two runners-up ti-

tles. Upon retirement from Triopia, Gene began coaching women’s softball at Illinois Col-

lege until his retirement from that position in 2001. Gene then coached the Wildcats of Win-

chester’s football team for 4 years. It was then that Gene once again landed at Triopia where he

coached the Lady Trojans Softball team from 2004 to this present school year. Under Gene’s

leadership, the team won their first two Regional Softball Titles. In total, Gene spent over 53

years coaching in the surrounding communities. Gene was inducted into not only the Illinois

College Hall of Fame, but also the Illinois Foot-

ball Coaches Hall of Fame, where he was hon-ored in the presence of his entire family in 1997.

Gene spent much of his free time in the summer coaching, umpiring or tending to the Arenzville

he did.

American Legion Post 604, where he served as adjutant. Gene also served on the Arenzville

“The Human Tongue”

Located just below the nose and

right above the chin Between two cheeks, poison leaks

from the cavity I’m in. Like a viper, I am very quick to give

a powerful sting I am known as the “Human Tongue”

a very deadly thing.

Whatever is inside the heart determines what I say

I spread dirt, and scatter hurt that clutters up life’s way.

Positioned in different ways I form a ruthless word

That falls upon somebody’s ear who’ll remember what they’ve

heard.

Then they go and tell someone the words I said

Before long, it’s told all wrong and quickly starts to spread.

Somewhat like an assembly line each adds an extra part

And produces a thing called “Gossip” the product of the heart.

Sometimes I rattle on and on when I should remain “mum”

Use my skill to spread goodwill and keep trouble under-thumb.

I’ll cause you many sleepless nights and beyond the slightest doubt You would be much better off if

you’d just pluck me out.

Controlling me is difficult however, I can be

The only way that I’ll obey, you must “bridle” me.

Speak only when spoken to - Use words that won’t betray

Don’t let me get unruly - “Be careful what you say”
