Billy E Blair, Jr., known to most of us as “J.R.”, was

named the First Citizen of Ashland at the recent

Summer Celebration. J.R. was raised in Ashland,

the son of Billy E. Sr. and the late Christine Blair.

He graduated from Ashland High School in 1970 and

Western Illinois University in 1974 with a B.S. in

Business. He married the former Kathie Williams,

and they have a son, Adam. One can hardly name

a group that J.R. has not been involved with in our

village. He is currently a member of the First Bap-

tist Church, it’s choir, and the Community Choir. He

is also President of the State Bank of Ashland, as

well as a member of the A-C Central bleacher com-

mittee. He was instrumental in organizing the Ses-

quicentennial Celebration. He is Chairman of the

Overall Economic Development Committee of Cass

County. He was a Charter Member of the Ashland

Jaycees, receiving the Outstanding District President

Award in 1979. He was Village Treasurer from 1975

to 1984. He has served with the Youth Association,

U-Help, Ashland High School Alumni Assoc, F.F.A.,

Boy Scouts, Committee of 10 consolidation Commit-

tee, and many other organizations. Because of the

hard work, time, dedication, and giving of one’s self

so charitably, he was named Ashland’s First Citizen.

Congratulations, and THANKS, J.R.

A GREAT IDEA – AND YOU CAN

HELP GET IT STARTED!!!

Many of know friends and relatives who have moved out of Ashland to be closer to doctors, relatives,

shopping, etc. With the rising cost of fuel, we will see this happening even more. It is not just disabled or older folks, but all of us who are affected. Cass County leaders are aware of grants which are available from the state and federal governments to

create a transportation system. Again, this would be usable by everyone -from young people with no vehi-cle who need to go shopping or to appointments, to elderly who no longer drive.

Questionnaires are now available at local churches and the bank. PLEASE take time to fill one out, and if you have elderly, disabled, or otherwise needy family or friends, be sure to help them with the form. It is not long and is not to be signed. Questionnaires need to be returned by August 15th to the Bank, Allen’s

Market, or the Crock Pot. Think of yourself and your family 5 or 10 years down the road and what your needs might be, also. It would be a wonderful thing for all of us, and help save our struggling small towns.

The next meeting of the county transportation group

will be Thursday August 28th at 6:30pm at Arenzville.

The Ashland United Methodist Church is

privileged to announce the winner of the Mildred Leahy Scholarship.

This is the 17th year of being able to assist stu-dents who are working to further their education. This year a scholarship award goes to Katherine Beauchamp. She is the daughter of Terry and

Rhonda Beauchamp and is a sophomore at the O’More College of Design in Franklin, Tennessee. Katherine met all the requirements of the appli-

cation, and her goals are such that she will be a benefit to our society.

The Leahy Committee wishes to extend our con-gratulations to Katherine and to her family. We believe Mrs. Leahy would be pleased with our se-lection.

We were also able to offer financial assistance to the 2nd Saturday Program at Ashland United

Methodist Church. They touch many young lives with their ministry. This is what Mrs. Leahy chose to do, help the youth of our community.
