Aside of the pristine nature and mesmerizing culture Bali also has a sheer exotic taste in its traditional cuisine. Acknowledged as one of the world’s most complex cuisines, Balinese food is considered as art itself, a culinary cocktail of fresh ingredients, intricate flavors and aromatic spices wrapped in an intriguing preparation. Here are some of the most authentic and distinctive dishes from the island of Bali.
BALINESE TRADITIONAL CUISINE : THE ART OF SAVORY
HIGHLIGHT
LAWARA dish created from a mixture of vegetables, coconut and minced meat mixed with rich herbs and spices, lawar is one of the most popu-lar dishes consumed by the locals. This dish is easily found in restau-rants and warungs in Bali. Some types of la-war actually add blood with spices to increase
the flavor. Lawar spoils easily, so it should be consumed imme-diately; it is usually good for half a day before going bad.
SEROMBOTANOriginated from
Klungkung, Eastern Bali, serombotan is a Balinese
traditional ‘salad’. It is made from a mix
of vegetables such as sprouts, beans, spinach, kale, green beans, and
eggplant, served with three traditional ‘sambal’
recipes, namely sambal nyuh, peanut sauce, and unyah sere limo.
SATE LILIT Sate lilit consists of minced meat; either pork, fish, chicken or beef mixed with grated coconut, thick coconut milk, lemon juice, shallots, and pepper. The spiced minced meat is wrapped around bamboo, sugar cane or lemongrass sticks—hence the name ‘lilit’, means ‘wrapped’, comes from. The meat is then grilled on charcoal.
BABI GULINGA lot of people have been familiar with this one. Babi Guling (or suckling pig) is one of Balinese most famous cuisines. It is mainly composed by roasted pig’s body part, from the skin, meat, to the entrails, served with a small portion of lawar, Balinese sauce, and a plate of steamed rice.

There are many statues in the temple’s vicinity. One of the main statues is called ‘Siwa Baraiwa’; a faceless statue dancing on a corpse with snake crawling on his neck. The statue also symbolize
two ways that can be used to reach ‘moksa’. There are several version of who exactly is the faceless statue, but it remains unanswered until now. This temple is considered as ‘Kahyangan Jagat’ or one of the most important temples on the island, and has been renovated several times until the year of 1960.
