The event usually takes place around October and December each year in Seraya Village, Karangasem. Because of the

geographical location, Seraya village is dry and barren. Rain rarely occurs in the area so the village folks do a war dance ritual called ‘Gebug Ende’ to please the God and hope that God would send plenty of water for the village plantation.

Gebug Ende derives from the word ‘Gebug’—means rattan stick or hit , and ‘Ende’—means shield. It is basically the equipment carried by the participant. Two Balinese men

battle each other in a circular arena using rattan stick and shield, while dynamic Gamelan music is played throughout the ritual. It is a battle of focus and endurance that begins with a traditional dance performance. Usually there are up

to sixty participants in one event, facing each other in a duel, trying to struck blow into each other’s torso. The duel ends

when one of the dancer is bleeding from the hit. There are no winners announced by the jury, rather they simply praise all

the contestants for their bravery and attempt.

This is possible because of the local plant called ‘Taru Menyan’ that grows freely around the village. ‘Taru’ means pleasant and ‘Menyan’ means ‘scent’. The village name ‘Trun-yan’ actually come from the combination of those two words.

“Standing gallantly on Raya Tuban road near Ngurah Rai International Airport, Gatotkaca

Statue is an iconic landmark that welcomes every tourist Bali.“

The statue was built around 1993 and still

looks well preserved. The local government pays an utmost respect for this statue and places it near the airport not only for aesthetic purpose but also spiritual. It is believed that the statue contributes in the protection of every flight that lands and departs from Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Gatotkaca is a tragic hero in Hindu epic Mahabharata. He is the son of Bima, one of the Pandawa brothers, and considered as one of the most skilful warriors in Mahabharata realm. On a great war against the evil Kurawa, Krisna asked Gatotkaca to engage Kurawa’s most

fearsome warrior, Karna who possessed a sacred bow called Konta that was capable to kill both mortal and God alike. Gatotkaca has been specifically asked to lure Karna to unleash the arrows. It was a suicide mission at best, and Gatotkaca knew it. He followed the order with unfaltering obedience and died a hero.

Nowadays, the statue serves as a wondrous spectacle on the side of the road. You can go take picture in front of it, admiring its beauty or blend with the locals while savouring some snacks from various vendors available around the statue area.

DRINK & SOBER: TIPS TO GET RID OF HANGOVER

Party hard on this festive season! December is a great time to have a toast with your besties and dance away the night on some of the most convenient nightclubs around the island. Sometime, you’re left with friends (or yourself) who drink a little too much. So here we provide you some of the best ways to get rid of hangover.

Check them out before you grab the bottle!

H2OAs we know, alcohol is a diuretic substance, meaning that it makes your trip to

the bathroom more frequent. So to prevent dehydration from and after your party night, drink a glass or two of fresh water for every bottle you down to replace the

fluids you may loose.

TOASTS/CRACKERSAfter you’re drinking too much, you tend to feel tired and irritable due to the low blood sugar pressure as your liver works to digest all the alcohol. To counter this, chew down some crackers or toasts to bring the carbohydrate to your metabolism

system and get rid of your hangover faster.

DRINK RESPONSIBLYBut from all the medicine and cure, prevention method is the best one to look

upon—especially before you do something that might bring harm to your body. Limit your drinks to about one every hour. Your body metabolizes each beer (or wine or shot) in about 60 to 75 minutes. It’s a recreational beverage and not

meant to be used as a replacement for water. Take it slow!
