TOWN OF ANNAPOLIS ROYAL 

                                   The lock at the leaf and yard waste drop‐off site has been changed. 

 New keys are available for residents, business occupants or owners of Town properties or contractors who are assisting them with leaf and yard waste removal.  If you already have a key, bring your key to Town Hall to exchange it for a new one at no extra charge.  If you do not have a key, you can obtain one for a non‐refundable key deposit in the amount of $25.  

Whether exchanging a key or obtaining a new key, you will be requested to sign an  agreement about the key and use of the leaf and yard waste drop‐off site.   

 At the site, remember to undo your  bags and dump out your leaf and yard waste and take 

your bags home to re‐use.   

This site is only for leaf and yard waste . . .    construction materials, batteries, paint cans etc. are NOT allowed.

Motions from Unapproved Minutes of Regular Council Meeting Held July 21, 2014 Motion a) Ratification of Order Pursuant to Section 346(1) of the Municipal Government Act – Electronic Vote Moved by Councillor Mersereau, seconded by Councillor Paquette to ratify the electronic poll of June 24, 2014: That Council hereby issues an Order pursuant to Section 346(1) of the Municipal Government Act on the property located at 378 St. George Street, Annapolis Royal as follows: As a result of failure to remedy the matters set out in the order dated April 16, 2012 and sent to the property owner via registered mail and ordinary mail on April 17, 2012, Town Council hereby Orders the property owner to correct and remedy the following items – within 28 days of receipt of an Order letter:

The exterior of the building as well as the fence on the property are in need of scraping and painting; The grounds require maintenance including raking of leaves, cutting the grass, whipper snipping and pruning of bushes; The roof shingles on the house are in need of replacement.

The property owner is hereby ordered to correct and remedy the items identified in points 1, 2 and 3, above within 30 days of receipt of this letter, in accordance with Section 346 of the Municipal Government Act. Failure to comply with the requirements of this Order within the time specified will result in entry on the property without warrant or other legal process to carry out the work specified above and the property owner will be billed for the work and it shall constitute a first lien on the property. Further, failure by the property owner to comply with this Order may result in a prosecution under Section 348(4) of the Municipal Government Act and, if found guilty, the imposition of a fine between $100 and $5,000 for each day the Order is not complied with, and in default of payment, to imprisonment for not more than three months. CARRIED Motion b) Pay Expenses after Tropical Storm Moved by Councillor Hudson, seconded by Councillor Paquette to give authority to the Chief Administrative Officer to pay the expenses as required for the cleanup after Tropical Storm Arthur. CARRIED Motion c) Public Access to First Lake Moved by Deputy Mayor Power, seconded by Councillor Hudson that Council endorse public access to First Lake and that the current signage at the entrance to the Lake be replaced with appropriate signage. CARRIED Motion d) Arts Unleashed re: Not for Profit Signage Moved by Councillor Mersereau, seconded by Councillor Hudson that Council approve the request to install a projecting wall sign at 324 St. George Street on a temporary basis for the period of July 23, 2014 to August 24, 2014. CARRIED Motion e) Application AR14-021-HER Moved by Deputy Mayor Power, seconded by Councillor Paquette to table the vote on application AR14-021-HER until the applicant responds to a request to consider the option of moving the emergency fire exit/staircase so the back of the property so that the staircase does not protrude as much, and subsequently an email poll vote be conducted. CARRIED Motion f) Issue an Order Moved by Councillor Paquette, seconded by Councillor Hudson “That Administration issue an Order under Section 63 of the Municipal Government Act and the Town of Annapolis Royal “Tree Inspection and Removal Powers Policy 2002-1” to the owner of 238 St. Anthony Street; that the Order stipulate the requirement within 30 days for removal of trees growing along the side of the house located at 232 St. Anthony Street and which are located between the house located at 232 St. Anthony Street and the driveway of 238 St. Anthony Street as the trees are deemed to be hazardous to persons and property of 232 St. Anthony Street; and that if the property owner of 238 St. Anthony Street does not comply with the Order within 30 days of service of a copy of the Order, Section 63 of the Municipal Government Act and Policy 2002-1 will be actioned. CARRIED

13  “Blacksmithing” Alexa Jaffers  Visit ARTsPLACE and watch Alexa of Mount Hanley at work on her portable propane forge. She will  demonstrate the magic which happens as metal is heated, worked on an anvil, bent and twisted until it emerges on the other site as a beautiful and functional creation. Visitors can help Alexa with the design plans as the work progresses and will also be able to make their own cold work project. 12pm‐4:30pm & 6:30pm‐8 pm

Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal New Contemporary Dance    Festival Launched in Nova Scotia. Festival of Dance Annapolis Royal (FODAR) will feature performances by the locally‐based Company of Angels, Mocean Dance of Halifax and JD Dance from Toronto. The four‐day event, on stage at King’s Theatre is, in fact, a festival within a festival, running as part of ARTs Unleashed. Tickets are on sale now at King’s Theatre Box Office, 209 St. George Street, by phone at 902‐532‐7704, or online at kingstheatre.ca.

"Paper Work" Ted Lind in the Mym Gallery at ARTsPLACE The artist Ted Lind draws with pencil, ink, and coloured washes on various types of paper and board.  Similar to his acrylic paintings, he creates images that use intricate combinations of line, shape, and contrasting values.  Viewing his works on paper engages the viewer in an appreciation of constructed solutions that express a joyful energy.   For more information www.arcac.ca

3  “First Flowers” Exhibition at ARTsPLACE Gallery, 396 St. George Street. Join us for the opening reception of “First Flowers” by   artist Sarah Maloney. This body of work was created from a short residency that Sarah undertook during the magnolia celebrations of Annapolis Royal in 2013. Sarah works with cast bronze sculptural installations. Please come by to meet the artist and hear about her work and   process. 2pm‐4pm. All welcome, free admission. The exhibition will run through   September 7. 

5  “Clock Art” Dave Beckner Bridgetown Clock and Watchmaker, Dave Beckner will be at ARTsPLACE to show visitors how he creates his “Timecycles”, which are unique replicas of motorcycles made entirely from tiny watch parts. Drop in and test your own dexterity as you try to manipulate the watch parts or offer design suggestions to Dave and let him do the delicate gluing. 11am‐5 pm 

5  “Chain Saw Carver” Dave Whitman  Chainsaw artist and popular local author Dave Whitman of Paradise will be demonstrating his carving talents outside at          ARTsPLACE. Dave will be working on a life size carving and also will use hand tools to create smaller carvings. Visitors, over the age of 16 will be able to try using the hand tools to carve. 11am‐5pm 

6  “Guitar & Song Writing” Les Smith  This would be the perfect time to dust off that guitar that has been relegated to the closet and get started on improving your skills. Join Les Smith at ARTsPLACE and let him answer your questions about folk music & guitars. He’ll be able to show you chords, introduce you to a wide range of songs, discuss the song writing process and entertain you with his never ending list of tunes. 12pm‐4:30pm & 6:30pm to 8pm 

6  “Bagpiper” Peter Fyfe When you arrive in Annapolis, you won’t be able to miss Peter. He’ll be the guy decked out in full uniform playing the bagpipes on the front lawn of ARTsPLACE! Peter will introduce you to the unique stories associated with bagpipes and give you the history of their origin. He will play by request and keep you entertained. If you have a set of bagpipes, bring them along. As Drum Major of the Fundy Pipers, Peter may try to recruit you for the drum core. 11am‐5pm 

10  Vintage Automobile Show, View cars, trucks and  tractors dating from 1900‐1980. North Hills Museum, 5065 Granville Road, Granville Ferry. Free family event.     1:00pm ‐ 2:00pm.              

12  “Paradise Village Quilters” Fabric artist Nancy MacIntosh will have a display of the steps in quilting as well as many samples of handmade quilts. She will demonstrate the various techniques of piecing and applique which can be used in the creation of a quilted item. Nancy will have sewing kits for visitors to use in creating their own handcrafted project. Bring your friends and plan on a relaxing afternoon.         11am‐5pm 

12  Kitchen pARTy at ARTsPLACE If you haven’t had the chance to attend one of the Kitchen pARTies, then give yourself a treat and make tonight the night. Everyone is welcome with the only requirement being that you should enjoy music. You can bring your guitar, banjo, drums, washboard, harmonica, tin whistle or your spoons and join in the music making or sit back, relax and let others entertain you.       Refreshments are provided and a good time is guaranteed. 7pm‐9 pm

22  “Creative Writing Workshop”  Carole Langille at ARTsPLACE. Carole Langille currently teaches Creative Writing Poetry at Dalhousie           University. She has received Canada Council grants for poetry,             non‐fiction and fiction as well as Nova Scotia Cultural Arts grants for poetry and fiction. Her work has been nominated for the Governor  General's Award and the Atlantic Poetry Prize. Her fourth book of     poetry, Church of the Exquisite Panic: The Ophelia Poems, was released in 2012.  10am‐1pm, $40 per person.

27  “Painting” Curphy Forrestall, Curphy Forrestall of Dartmouth will bring her experiences as a scenic artist for film and as a muralist to her      workshop at ARTsPLACE. Visitors will have the opportunity to create their own artwork as they work with acrylic paints and learn about a variety of techniques such as glazing and brush mechanics.  

27  “Writing/Origami” Monica Forrestall Writing: Monica brings her      background as a writer about food, wine and lifestyle in Boston and New York to ARTsPLACE. Visitors will have the opportunity to talk about   editorial writing and glean tips on writing articles for magazines and newspapers.  Origami Workshop Join Monica for a workshop aimed at the young and young at heart! 2pm‐3pm 

28  “Songwriter & Children’s Entertainer” Ashley Moffat  Join award     winning recording artist Ashley Moffat at ARTsPLACE. She will begin with a demo of some her songs and then review how they were created. She will talk about the process of song writing and discuss her connection of music and nature. During the last half, she will hold a song writing    workshop. 1pm ‐4 pm

Paint The Town 2014 August 16th & 17th 10am ‐ 6pm  Annapolis Royal Area Gallery  

located at the Legion on Victoria Street  

More than 70 artists visit Annapolis Royal on August 16th and 17th for the annual Paint the Town© event. Throughout the weekend, they will paint or carve or shape iron at various sites around the town. The public is invited to watch the artists at work throughout the day – bids can be placed on art as soon as it reaches the Paint the Town gallery located at the Legion on Victoria Street;     between 10am and 6pm. Final bids by 6pm each day. See something you can’t live without – purchase it at a “buy‐it‐now” gallery price, valid until 5pm.  Participating artists have ranged from emerging talent to such well‐known names as Rose Adams, Wayne Boucher, Geoff Butler, Tom Forrestall, Brad Hall, David Lacey, Barbara McLean and Felicity Redgrave. They work in all styles, from        traditional to contemporary, in a variety of media including oil, acrylic,  watercolour, iron, stone, wood, and photography. In previous years, they have produced an average of over 500 pieces of art over the weekend. For a list of this year’s artists,  visit http://arcac‐artsplace.weebly.com/paint‐the‐town.html  Paint the Town is organised by The Annapolis  Region Community Arts Council (ARCAC),  and proceeds from the auction art sales  are split 50/50 between the  organization and the artists.

Historic Gardens, Annapolis Royal  Plan to visit the Historic Gardens in Annapolis Royal on       Tuesday, August 5, 5‐8pm for the third annual Acadian Kitchen Party, held in the shady surroundings of the Acadian House. Community members and visitors will gather for an evening of toe‐tapping music by Unisson, tasty nibbles with an Acadian flair and Nova Scotia wine, beer, and cider. Be sure to bring along a lawn chair or blanket so you can relax, settle in and enjoy the evening! Children are welcome to enjoy this licensed event with their families! Please note: Minors under age 19 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Tickets $25 (Children 7‐12 pay half price, and under 6, free). Cash bar. The Acadian Kitchen Party is a wonderful cultural event that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Be sure to experience it for    yourself! For tickets & information, visit www.AcadianKitchenParty.com or www.HistoricGardens.com or call (902) 532‐7018.

“Learn to Play Tennis” youth lessons  August 11th‐14th, 9‐10A am at the Annapolis Royal Tennis Courts 

Brought to you by the Annapolis Royal Tennis Association, there will be a 4 day mini‐camp to help learn the basic skills, form, and rules needed to play tennis! Open to players aged 8‐14, the total cost for the 4 day camp is only $20, with all proceeds to benefit the courts.  Please bring your own racket, 2‐3 tennis balls, and a bottle of water. Who knows, Annapolis Royal may produce the next Eugenie Bouchard… Pre‐registration is required and space is limited, so please contact Noah at [email protected], or call (902)‐955‐1205 to sign up! If you do 

not have your own racket and tennis balls, please let us know and we will do our best to find some equipment for your player to borrow.  This is

Citizen Recreation Survey Results  Thanks to everyone who participated in the Citizen Recreation 

Survey this spring.  Official results will be available for viewing 

soon, and the data and insight that was collected was extremely 

useful towards the development of future activity programming.  

Walking was cited as the most popular form of physical activity in 

Annapolis Royal, so look forward to some more fun guided walks 

in the future both in Town and out in nature, or feel free to stop 

by Town Hall for some of our excellent brochures on local      

opportunities to walk, hike, and stroll… 

Heart of the Valley Century Ride, August 10th

4th Annual 24 hour Swim‐a‐Thon August 8th‐9th 2014  

What is a swim‐a‐thon ?? Our aim is to have someone swimming in the pool at any given time for the entire 24 hours, starting at 5:00 pm Friday August 8th and finishing at 5:00 pm on Saturday August 9th. How does it work?? First, phone and register yourself, or a team. Then decide how long you would like to swim for, and at what time. Book your swim time, then collect some pledges. The rest is fun, fun, fun!! This is not a      competitive event. You can swim for as little as a half an hour ‐ or for many hours ‐ the choice is yours. We will be having a BBQ at 6:00 pm at the pool on Friday, live music, an evening Zumba class on the tennis courts, an Aquafit class, and breakfast at the pool on Saturday morning. Come on out, swim under the stars!! And help us raise money for our wonderful swimming pool! For more information, to register, or to book swim times, please phone Wendy or Jenn at 532‐7736 or Tina at 526‐0571 or email  [email protected]
