Thermo Scientific ELEMENT GD High resolution glow discharge mass spectrometer

IntroductionThe fast flow source design of the ELEMENT™ GD mass spectrometer speeds up analytical workflows in the production of valuable metals and alloys, providing a new user experience and dramatically improves laboratory efficiency. With sample turn-around times of ~10 min a close production control is made possible even when QC limits are set at the ppb level.

BasicsThe ELEMENT GD fast flow source concept provides• High sensitivity: shorter analysis times

    • High sputter rate: less pre-sputter time, less sample preparation

    • Simple vacuum requirements speeds up pumping times

    • Standard RSF concept for semi-quantitative analysis

The mass spectrometer features• High resolution: interference removal easy

even for complex matrices like Ni alloys

    • High scan speed: short scan times, excellent depth resolution

    • High mass stability: no need to acquire entire peak; cutting analysis time to ~ half

    • Fast switching between resolutions: no drawback using multiple resolutions for analysis

The Thermo Scientific ELEMENT GD has been developed as a combination of a fast flow glow discharge source with a high resolution mass spectrometer.

This technology enables advanced high performance GD-MS analysis combined with the industry accepted data integrity of this technique.

  • 2 Software for a high level of transparancyThe software package is optimized for the needs of the routine analyst, providing ease of use for basic operation as well as flexibility for advanced operation.

The ELEMENT software suite controls and monitors all instrument functions for GD-MS analysis and provides all necessary features for data evaluation. Real time display of mass spectra, time resolved data, calibration curves and comprehensive reports guarantee a high level of transparency and therefore easily traceable results. Full and flexible support for LIMS connectivity ensures convenient, automatic and safe data management.

The ELEMENT software package offers full quantitative analysis using Relative Sensitivity Factors (RSF) obtained from standard materials or semi-quantitative analysis using Ion Beam Ratios (IBR). Since the ELEMENT GD detection system is capable of measuring traces and the matrix within one analysis, the ratio between the analyte and the matrix is used for quantification.
