War is a feature of modern human life, for better or for worse. From the early wars of conquest, to the medieval religious wars and the con!icts between nation-states that dominated the twentieth century, war has shaped our world like no other socially-constructed force. "e notion of war is central to not only how we conceive of international relations, but given these paradigms assumptions of human nature of ourselves.

Yet, in the 21st century, war has shown its face in startlingly unfamiliar permutations. "e advents of new technologies, new threats and new battlegrounds have fundamentally changed what war is, and entailed new responses to it. "e past decade has been rife with incidents demonstrating that, signi#cantly, warfare is no longer the domain of states.

For this edition, we asked contributors to consider the implications of these changes with regards to the future of warfare. Several writers focus on the impact of new military practices on international law. Alexander Barrett-Meyerings article, Public Wars, Private Militaries traces the rise of private military companies, whose activities undermine the laws of war. Meanwhile, in his article, Towards Intelligent Self-Defence, Ian Mack explains the inadequacy of the legal architecture in accounting for peacetime espionage, and proposes with nuance that this practice be brought under the legal rubric of lawful self-defence. Other contributions by Felix Donovan and Gary Dickson address the impact and distortions of modern media, which has brought battleground action to the palms of our hands and made war a part of our lives more so than ever before.

"e theme for this edition was chosen with cognizance of the fact that 2013 marks the tenth anniversary of the Iraq War and the denouement of Australias involvement in Afghanistan. Several contributors have seized on this historical moment to re!ect on the new faces of warfare that emerged in this unstable period. Josh Wong analyses the implication of science in the well-documented torture methods used by the CIA during the War on Terror; Christina White explores how systemic rape has been used as a weapon of war; whilst Stephen Hindes and Tasman Bain debate the merits of the COIN strategy used in Afghanistan.

"e issues canvassed in this edition are but a cross-section of the incalculable facets of human life in which war makes its impacts felt. Many people I know have seen, heard or breathed war. Given that it is a very real part of our lives, war is something that should be discussed in any healthy democracy, and I applaud our contributors for furthering this conversation.

"at dialogue does not stop at the edges of these pages. !e Sydney Globalist also pub-lishes an online edition (thesydneyglobalist.org) where you will #nd additional content that complements this print edition, alongside timely feature articles on current inter-national issues. You can also take the discussion to "e Perspectivist blog (perspectivist.com), the o$cial online publication of the Yale-based Global21 network, of which we are a proud to be an inaugural chapter. "is ever-expanding network of some 250,000 students across six continents is an unparalleled platform for dialogue on international a%airs; I encourage you to join our conversation by contributing in future.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our Sponsors for recognising the value of !e Sydney Globalist and for making its continuation possible. "ank you also to our Board of Advisers for their support in particular, Professor Michael Jackson, and "e Hon. Michael Kirby and to former Editors-in-Chief Lewis Hamilton and May Samali for their guidance. Lastly, a heartfelt thank you to the Editorial Team: your dedication and passion for this publication is inspiring.

I hope you enjoy this edition of our magazine.

    Yours in global a%airs,

    INTERNATIONAL LAW

    IGNITE THE POSSIBLEsydney.edu.au/law

Sydney Law School is a powerhouse for critical

legal thinking. It attracts academics of the highest

calibre from the most reputed universities across

the globe, and fosters an environment where academic enquiry and

rigour is actively nurtured and encouraged. My study

has enabled me to learn from experts in public

international law, challenged my thinking and greatly

    supported my professional development.
