“Last September my fiancé Molly Vanek and me went cage divingfor Great White Sharks off Isla Guadalupe in the Pacific Ocean. Wespent about five hours a day in cages waiting for the sharks. Thereusually was some down time between sharks... what better time to catchup on the latest happenings in San Pedro and read The San Pedro Sun!Oh, our reading did occasionally get interrupted by a 14 foot, 1500pound Great White Shark exploding onto the scene! Awesome!! These creatures are absolutely spectacular and something we need toprotect.” The San Pedro Sun extends warmest congratulations

to Jim & Molly on their engagement!Jim Rosenberger

It has to be one of thecutest logos ever…alarge sign stands outsidethe sandwich shop onPescador Drive where abig-eyed monkey, grin-ning with a toothy smileand an X for a belly but-ton holds over his head alarge submarine sand-wich fringed with all theyummy makings of akiller sub. The sign readsHungry Monkey, “TheBest Sub in CentralAmerica.” Well, that isa pretty bold claim andcertainly one that an in-vestigative newspaperlike The San Pedro Sunneeds to get to the bottomof! Armed with emptytummies and a nose for news we de-cide it is time to verify this sort of claimand find out what this monkey businessis all about. We begin our investigation by inter-viewing the owner Mario, who boughtthe business just a little more than ayear ago. Hailing from Montreal,Canada, Mario has been in the restau-rant business for seventeen years.Mario and his wife Vicky have alwaysenjoyed traveling the Caribbean andfour years ago their travels brought

them to San Pedro. Of course the is-land worked her magic on them andthey knew someday they would makeLa Isla Bonita their home. A few yearslater Mario decided it was time for achange and sold both his restaurants inMontreal. He purchased The HungryMonkey and moved his family to SanPedro. He knew that his vast experi-ence would be an asset to the businessand believed that there was a need inSan Pedro for a good sub sandwichshop. He made changes to the menu,

added several new items and main-tained the claim that Hungry Monkeymade the best subs in Central America. And how can that be, we ask? Mariostated, “Simple, is it’s not fresh I don’tserve it.” As any good newspaperknows, such facts and claims need tobe verified, which the next step in ourinvestigation was. Armed with samplesof five different sub sandwiches fromthe menu we dug into the arduous taskof taste testing the evidence. We began with sampling Mylee’sCraving. Served on a whole wheat bun,the sub consisted of chicken breast, green peppers, onions, pepper jackcheese, BBQ sauce, lettuce and to-mato. The pepper jack cheese and BBQsauce add a zing to each bite and the

taste combination of sweet yet spicy isperfect. Next is the Italian Stallion, abold statement of a sub made withsalami, pepperoni, ham, provolonecheese, onions, red wine vinaigrette, lettuce and tomato. The ideal marriageof zesty meats and smoky provolonewould even make an Italian motherproud! Mama Mia! Our next taste taskis the Westerner. This sub is stackedwith tender roast beef, mozzarellacheese, black olives, pickles, ranchdressing, lettuce and tomato. Truly amatch made in heaven, the unlikelycombination of flavors is testimony tothe taste buds that until you try it youwon’t believe how well the ingredientsgo together. We also sample the

Hamwich which is a yummy ham, ched-dar cheese, onion, black olive sub withsweet and tangy honey mustard, lettuceand tomato. The mustard adds a tasty twistto a classic combination! Last we aretreated to Vicky’s Humongous Hummus.Even if you are not a vegetarian this sub, made with homemade hummus, cucum-ber, shredded carrots, lettuce and tomato

is a real appetite pleaser! Further inves-tigation revealed that subs are served onwhite or whole wheat bread and come in6" and 12" sizes. You can even have thesandwich served as a fresh tortilla wrap.Other chicken sub varieties include theGiant Gobbler, Sloppy Sam, ChickenCaesar and the Klucker. Also available

San Pedro is home to many creativepeople and local artisans translate theirtalents into beautiful and unique mas-terpieces that are not only expressionsof art but beautiful gifts that visitors canpurchase as momentous of their trav-els to La Isla Bonita. is the Chilli Philli, a Tuna Torpedo andthe Hungry Monkey which is served withdouble salami, pepperoni and cheddar, wow! Once we verified the claim that in-deed we had devoured The Best Sub inCentral America the next step in the in-vestigation was to confirm how this waspossible. We went back to our source,Mario who stated “we use the best in-gredients available, we use smokedmeats from the Sausage Factory andfresh, locally baked bread.” “If it’s notfresh we don’t serve it, period” repeatedthe adamant owner. We also discoveredthat Hungry Monkey delivers, which is aperfect option when staying in to eat andthat they also cater special occasions andparties. The Sun also learned that Hun-gry Monkey prepares bag lunches shouldyou go on an all day outing and need a “togo” meal and that a twenty-four hour no-tice is appreciated. And what else at-tributes to their success we ask? Accord-ing to Mario word of mouth has been adriving factor with new customers com-ing in based on the recommendations ofothers. “That speaks for itself” com-mented Mario. If you prefer a meal without the bread,Hungry Monkey also serves the RanchHand Salad, which comes with yourchoice of chicken or ham, crumbled ba-con, lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese and

store is full of colorful, locally madecrafts and souvenirs. Exotic, handcarved sculptures tailored from nativeZericote wood are fashioned into imagesof graceful birds, surging fish, elegantsailboats, strong featured profiles and avariety of bowls ranging in size and pur-pose. Zericote wood is incredibly denseand the dark, purple brown color of thewood is laced with swirling grain withthe outer layers of the wood fading to acream color. The wood naturally polishesto a warm finished lustier and accentu-ates the intricacy of the design. Theseworks of art capture the essence of theBelizean culture and are perfect giftsitems when shopping for souvenirs or akeepsake. The craft shop also has a col-orful variety of hand painted and ornatemasks that are perfect for wall décor andthere is also a large selection of slateplaques etched with Mayan calendarsymbols and designs. Vibrant painted liz-ards, fish, birds, crocodiles and othertropical critters adorn the walls and thereare paintings of classic Belizean land andseascapes to choose from as well. Frompolished seashells to antique bottleseroded by time, the shop boasts a varietyof items, but it is the hand crafted jew-elry that makes The Little Old Craft Shopstand alone as one of the most unique giftshops on the island. Mr. Zetina claims that he likes manyforms of craft making but it is the jew-elry that is his passion. Working with

black coral, brown coral and seashells,Zetina creates exquisite necklaces, ear-rings, bracelets and small animal sculp-tures and charms. From beaded designsto intricate reproductions of sea life andnative animals, each piece is a uniquework of art. Like wood, black and browncoral also have a grain to them and con-centric growth rings that are enhancedwhen polished. The brown coral caneven have a bronze tone to it and oftenZetina uses both corals when creatinghis pieces. Black and brown coral is a semi-pre-cious “live” organism that is a relativeto the better known pink and red cor-als. Black coral grows in the crystalclear waters of Belize upon the deepershelves of the Barrier Reef and is foundat the depths of 150 feet and below.Because black coral only grows ¼ to½ inches in diameter every 100 yearsit is a protected resource and the Gov-ernment of Belize regulates the har-vesting of black coral. Marriage “Tom and Helen Mott will be leaving tomorrow,” Dulce said.“We’re going to go over and have breakfast at their condo tomorrowmorning.”

“Helen’s cooking breakfast?”

“Helen doesn’t cook,” Dulce said. “We’re going over and I’mfixing breakfast for all of us.”

“Who is all of us?”

“Mike and Dawn are going to try to make it but I doubt if they will.Karen will definitely be there.”

Almost all of the people who came with Jerry Jeff Walker’s fangroup had gone home but a few, like Tom and Helen were still around.

“Helen, these potatoes are delicious,” Karen said. “How did youmake them.”

“Are you kidding?” Helen said. “Dulce fixed those potatoes. Idon’t cook. That’s why Tom and I have stayed married so long.”

“I always wondered what the secret to your long marriage is,” Itold Tom. “Is it really because Helen doesn’t cook?”

“Not really,” he said. “When we got married we decided that Iwould make any major decisions relating to our lives and Helen wouldmake all the minor decisions.”

“It seems to have worked well,” I told him.

“Yeah,” he said. “Almost twenty years and we haven’t had tomake a major decision yet.”
