Wetlands are areas where soilis saturated with water for pro-longed periods of time. They areusually located in low-lying areas, covered with a shallow layer ofwater. Conservationists often re-fer to these ecosystems as giantsponges as a result of their effec-tiveness at absorbing and holdinglarge amounts of water. This func-tion becomes critical in prevent-ing flooding during times of heavyrain like the rainy season. There are many other benefitsthat the characteristics of wetlandsprovide the surrounding environ-ment and inhabitants with. For in-stance, the presence of seagrassand water hyacinths in this habitathelp trap sediments and toxins fromterrestrial run-off that would oth-erwise degrade the island’s eco-system, not to mention the coralreef. Together with mangroves, wetlands also contribute to main-taining and stabilizing the islandstructure, as well as buffer thewinds and waves of big storms. The wetlands present on Am-bergris Caye can be defined ascoastal wetlands. Coastal wetlandsoften extend from lagoons andform when fresh water flows fromthe land and mixes with the saltwater from the sea. This brackishwater has a high density of phy-toplankton, as well as benthic mi-croflora (algae) and macroflora(seagrass and mangroves), creat-ing an area of very high produc-

Why Wetlands? While festivals are held to celebrate the island’s beauty and culture, it isimperative that we also promote our natural resources, ensuring that they arekept intact as best as possible. What better way to explain the importance of ourbasic foundation than through a reef brief about wetlands, which comprises of themajority of land space on the island of Ambergris Caye?

lobsters are found in this area. There is little doubt however, thatof all the animals found in this eco-system, the migratory and residentbirds have most significantly be-come dependent on the area forfood. For threatened bird speciessuch as Roseate Spoonbills andReddish Egrets, wetlands are con-sidered a valuable feeding habitat, providing essential nutritional re-sources including fish. Anyone can see that wetlandsand lagoons are crucial to protect-ing the island from storms, pro-viding important habitat to manyanimal species. Additionally, theseecosystems offer an exquisite rec-reational area for fishermen, kayakers and birdwatchers. Theseare just a few of the reasons ex-plaining why San Pedro caresabout keeping its lagoons andmangroves clean.

There is nothing more relaxing then a stroll on the beach. There is something aboutthe vast expanse of the horizon that allows your worries to drift over that unseenledge, temporally disappearing from heart and mind. Accompanying you along theway are the creatures who call this scene of serenity home. Above you soaring birdscall out in screeching song, while long-legged shorebirds scamper on the beach, escorting you along the way. Crabs and critters scurry as you approach, and oftenwhen you look closely into the clear shallow waters you spot bright little tropical fish, quickly darting to their favorite hiding place. They are the ambassadors of the beach, there to join you during your quest of sand and sun. As constant companions, thesebeach buddies welcome you to their home in their own unique way. Perhaps you have wondered just who these creatures are? Well, The San PedroSun relishes this opportunity to acquaint you with these common critters who leaduncommon lives. “Dennis, can I give you a hand with that?” “Sure, Garrick. Grab that guitar amplifier if you will.” We were moving our musical instruments out of Wet Willie’s, wherewe had played the night before on Taco Tuesday when Garrick offered tohelp. “Wait a minute, Garrick,” I said. “Why don’t we let this crowd ofpeople getting off the water taxi thin out a little before we try to move thisstuff?” “It’s no use fighting this crowd,” he agreed. “Hey, you guys areplaying at the Costa Maya Festival this Sunday aren’t you?” “Yeah. We’re doing a one hour country and western show on FamilyNight.” “Halt!” I automatically stopped when Iheard the authoritative voice behindme. It was a new lady customs of-ficer, randomly checking peoplegetting off the boat. “Open the box, please,” she said,to a man carrying a cardboard boxwrapped with tape. “She just started working outhere in San Pedro,” Garrick said.“She’s pretty eager.” After about five minutes of wait-ing I said, “The crowd has prettymuch gone now. Why don’t wemove this stuff?” As we walked back into WetWillie’s, little Derrick, our fifteenyear-old bass player came aroundthe corner. He was pulling Drum-mer Dan’s suitcase full of drum hard-ware. “Halt!” the customs officer saidto him. As Derrick stood there lookingquizzically at her, she said, “We’relooking for contraband. Open thesuitcase.” Derrick opened the suitcase toreveal Drummer Dan’s rusty cym-bal stands and his drumsticks. Asthe customs officer bent to look in-side it one of our local wits passedby and stopped. “You guys just can’t get it right, can you?” he said to the customsofficer, “You’re supposed to belooking for contraband, not a coun-try band.”
