WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS St. Jane de Chantal Parish welcomes those who have recently registered in our parish:

♦ Bryan & Elizabeth Leese Family ♦ Ines Ngassa If you attend Mass at St. Jane Frances de Chantal regularly, we encourage you to register as a member. Please complete a registration form and drop it in the collection basket when you attend Mass. NEW PERMANENT DEACON We are happy to announce that Cardinal Wuerl has assigned Deacon Bob Vince to St. Jane de Chantal Parish. Deacon Vince and his family have recently returned from the San Francisco Bay area where he worked for a few years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and served as a deacon at St. Michael’s Parish and the local Veterans’ Hospital. Deacon Vince was ordained to the diaconate in June 2013 by Cardinal Wuerl while a member of Little Flower Parish in Bethesda. He and his wife, Charmie, have three adult children and one granddaughter. SOCIAL JUSTICE ADVOCACY IN OUR PARISH This weekend, November 4/5, visit the gathering space of church after Mass to learn more about an important organization that serves our own parish and beyond: St. Martin’s Cloak. Through the generous assistance of parish donations, St. Martin’s Cloak provides financial assistance to parishioners in need. In addition, in just the last 18 months they have collected and distributed more than 15,000 lbs. of bread and other food to area soup kitchens and seminaries, as well as turkey dinners to families in need at Thanksgiving. They have also collected and distributed dozens of blankets and backpacks to support the homeless in the archdiocese. Please stop by after all the Masses to learn more and to consider joining this small and impassioned group as they continue the mission of St. Martin to advocate for the poor and the disadvantaged. For more information, call Paul Eder at 301-956-6273. PRO-LIFE CHRISTMAS CARDS The Pro-Life Committee will have religious-themed Christmas cards available for purchase after all Masses this weekend, November 4/5. Proceeds will benefit Right to Life of Montgomery County. PRO-LIFE TEDDY BEAR BANKS This weekend, November 4/5, the Pro-Life Committee will distribute teddy bear banks to be taken home and filled.

Feed your bear loose change, cash, or checks, then return it at any weekend Mass in early December. All money will go to Birthright, to help save babies from abortion. LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR The Little Sisters of the Poor will visit our parish next weekend, November 11/12 to request our assistance with their mission in caring for the elderly poor. The sisters will be at the doors of church after each Mass to accept voluntary gifts of support. SACRED MUSIC IN A SACRED SPACE Please join us on Friday, November 17 at 7:30 pm for the first event in our 2017-2018 Sacred Music in a Sacred Space parish concert series. Each November we celebrate the anniversary of the dedication of our pipe organ and this year is no exception. Joining us to mark the fourth anniversary are members of the Barclay Brass ensemble in a special performance of music for organ and brass. There is no cost for admission, and we encourage you to bring your family and friends! YOUNG ADULT FELLOWSHIP Come join us for a tour and tasting at Atlas Brew Works in DC on Saturday, November 18. We will meet at the parish at 3:00 pm in order to tour the brewery at 4:00 pm. Depending on how the group feels, we may get dinner in the area after. ST. JANE DE CHANTAL SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE If you are thinking about Catholic education for your children, plan to visit the Open House on Friday, November 10, 9:00-11:00 am. Prospective parents may tour all classrooms, pre-K through grade 8, and meet teachers and parents. Visiting during our Open House is the best way to learn about our "Best of Bethesda" school. Application material for the 2018-19 school year will be available. SPIRIT WEEK Pajamas, blue and white day, outfits from all of the decades, and tropical dress were just some of the exciting themes from the 2017 Spirit Week hosted and organized by the eighth grade student council. All of the students enjoyed a festive pep rally, spirit week games, prizes, and a competitive blue team versus white team basketball game (the blue team won). Each grade dressed up their uniforms to match the daily theme to try to win the Golden Duke (the prize for the class with the most school spirit). Congratulations to this year's winner of the Golden Duke award: the kindergarten class! Go Dukes! FIELD TRIPS The sixth grade tested their nerves and climbing skills during their first field trip of the year to Sandy Spring Adventure Park. To complement the science curriculum, the seventh grade visited the Montgomery County Recycling Center to learn to learn how out county recycles. ANNOUNCING THE SIXTH GRADE PLAY Each year the sixth grade performs a Spring musical full of incredible singing, dancing, and amazing acting! This year's 6th grade musical will be Mary Poppins! Mary Poppins will be performed the evenings of April 26 and 27. SECOND COLLECTION: ARCHDIOCESAN RETIRED PRIESTS The second collection this weekend, November 4/5, will be the annual collection for the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Washington. There is currently a shortfall in funding for priests’ retirement, and the archdiocese is working diligently to address this shortfall through such efforts as this special collection. COMBINED FEDERAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE Due to a new process for agencies to participate in the Combined Federal Campaign, the St. Jane de Chantal School Endowment Fund is currently not available for work-place giving. However, you can still contribute to our School Endowment Fund through our parish’s online giving program, Faith Direct (https://membership.faithdirect.net/MD30). You may make a one-time gift (write “School Endowment Fund” in the “Notes” box), or a monthly recurring gift that will renew automatically every year. #GIVINGTUESDAY Kick off the season of giving on Tuesday, November 28 and help provide the students of St. Jane de Chantal School with the support and tools they need to learn and develop a positive self-image, leadership skills, and a keen sense of responsibility toward school, faith, and community. Your gift on #GIVINGTUESDAY can benefit our school in three ways: School Endowment Fund, Msgr. Christopher Scholarship Fund, and School Technology Fund. Watch for information on each of these funds, and the link for donating to these funds online on #GIVINGTUESDAY.

Poor Box The Poor Box next weekend, November 11/12, will benefit St. Martin’s Cloak. In the spirit of St. Martin, who tore his military cloak in half to share with a beggar, St. Martin’s Cloak provides financial and other assistance to those in need, particularly those in our parish. Financial assistance is completely confidential. Long term problems are referred to community resources.

“Paradise is not a fairytale place, much less an enchanted garden. Paradise is the embrace of God, infinite Love, and we enter there thanks to Jesus, who died on the Cross for us. Where there is Jesus there is mercy and happiness; without him there is cold and darkness. At the hour of death, a Christian repeats to Jesus: ‘Remember me.’ And even if there may no longer be anyone who remembers us, Jesus is there, beside us. He wants to take us to the most beautiful place that exists. He wants to take us there with the small or great deal of good that we have done in our life, so that nothing of what he has already redeemed may be lost.”
