Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children,

so you watch over your Church. Bless all mothers, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers.

Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honor them always

with a spirit of profound respect.

SIXTH GRADE MUSICAL: THE LION KING

After months of preparation, on April 28 and 29, the sixth grade class performed the much anticipated annual musical: The Lion King. It was an incredible performance led by directors Shannon Cron, Olga Morales, and Tina Maxwell. With the seventh- and eighth-grader choristers as the supporting voices, the sixth grade students brought outstanding acting, singing, and dancing to the stage for three performances. A special thanks to fifth grade teacher, Matt Dugan, and art teacher, Claire Shea, for their creation of the background scenery. Congratulations to all of the sixth grade students for their hard work and perseverance.

LOLLIPOP DAY

On May 2, St. Jane de Chantal welcomed accepted students and families for the 2016-17 school year. The annual day of welcome, known as “Lollipop Day,” included an opportunity for incoming kindergarten students to meet their teachers, visit their classrooms, and spend time together. Parents received a warm welcome from Mrs. Hamilton and HSA President Mrs. Kelley.

SPACE STATION DE CHANTAL

The fourth grade participated in Space Station de Chantal. With the help of some wonderful parent volunteers, students made models of Mars Rovers out of candy, made paper rockets, tried astronaut ice cream, created constellations in a can, and made moon craters.

PRE-K ZOO TRIP

The pre-k has worked very hard all year on their alphabet and have finally finished letters A-Z. To celebrate their accomplishment, they went to the National Zoo to find all of their animal friends that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! The children were able to meet the newest addition to the panda family, Bei Bei.

For more information on education, family, youth, social concerns, & other events

MEMORIAL MASS FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES

Next Sunday, May 15, the 22nd Annual Memorial Mass will be held to honor those who have served and are serving in our nation's armed forces. The Mass will take place at 12:00 noon at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception (400 Michigan Ave., NE). The principal celebrant and homilist will be Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services. Military personnel are encouraged to be in uniform, and civilians should wear business attire. To request seating or for more information, visit www.milarch.org/memorialmass.

MEN’S DISCERNMENT MASS & DINNER

Single Catholic men, college age and up, are invited to

discuss the possibility of priesthood with priests, seminarians, and other men from the Washington D.C. area on Sunday, May 15, 5:00-8:30 pm, at Saint John Paul II Seminary (145 Taylor St NE). Holy Mass will be celebrated in the seminary chapel, followed by dinner and discussion. RSVP to Traci O'Neill at [email protected]. You must RSVP to attend. For more information, visit www.dcpriest.org, email [email protected] or call 202-636-9020.

QUO VADIS CAMP FOR HIGH SCHOOL MEN

The annual Quo Vadis Camp will be from June 26-29 at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. The camp is for young men in high school who may be considering a vocation to the priesthood. There will be opportunities for prayer, small group discussion, Mass, and silent reflection, as well time for recreation and sports. Camp registration, bus registration, and other information is available at www.dcpriest.org/events/all-vocation-events. For more information, contact Traci O'Neill in the Office of Priest Vocations at [email protected] or at 202-636-9020.

Jesus ascended into heaven, blessing His disciples and promising that they would soon receive

the power of the Holy Spirit. We who have received that promised gift of the Spirit

are now empowered to be His witnesses to the ends of the earth — to use our time and talents

to spread the good news of salvation.

SECOND COLLECTION: CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES

The second collection next weekend, May 14/15, will be the annual collection to benefit Catholic Relief Services, the official international Catholic relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Six worldwide Catholic relief agencies are funded by this collection, which helps organizations provide pastoral support, humanitarian aid, and other vital assistance to poor and vulnerable persons around the world. The work supported through this collection reunites families separated by war and disaster, teaches essential skills for success, and gives a voice to the under-represented everywhere.

POOR BOX

The Poor Box next weekend, May 14/15, will benefit St. Martin’s Cloak. In the spirit of St. Martin, who tore his military cloak in half to share with a beggar, St. Martin’s Cloak provides financial and other assistance to those in need, particularly those in our parish. Financial assistance is completely confidential. Long term problems are referred to community resources.
