Greetings to all in the Name of the Risen Lord!

May our worship this glorious morning celebrate the joy and hope, peace and presence, of our Lord Jesus Christ, raised to life for us. We welcome all, especially our guests. If you do not have a church home, please consider Divine Shepherd. We would love to have you as part of our family. Please take a minute and sign our guest book.

A prayer before Worship

This is the day you have made, O Lord Jesus, a day of new life and eternal celebration! The stone is moved; death is defeated; heaven is open. As Your disciples first saw and believed Your victory over the tomb, so give us joy in the promise You made and keep for us: because You live, we live also! Amen.

The Lord’s Supper

The Lord’s Supper is celebrated by us this morning in the confession and gladness that, as our Lord says, He gives into our mouth not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord Jesus invites to His table those who trust His Words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes.

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the blood of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. ( 1 Cor 11:28 ESV ) Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this alter.  Any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and the Lutheran Church~Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked to speak with Pastor Sturzenbecher.

Invocation & Exhortation

PIn the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

CAmen.

PIf we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

CBut if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Confession of Sins

PLet us then confess our sins to God our Father.

CMost merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

Absolution

PAlmighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

CAmen.

Introit

Your lightnings lighted | up the world;* the earth trem- | bled and shook. How lovely is your dwelling place, O | Lord of hosts!* My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts | of the Lord.Blessèd are those who dwell | in your house,* ever sing- | ing your praise! For a day in your courts is better than a thousand | elsewhere.* I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of | wickedness. For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and | honor.* No good thing does he withhold from those who walk up- | rightly.Glory be to the Father and | to the Son* and to the Holy | Spirit;as it was in the be- | ginning,* is now, and will be forever. | Amen.Your lightnings lighted | up the world;* the earth trem- | bled and shook.

Salutation and Collect of the Day

Old Testament ReadingExodus 34:29–35

29When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. 30Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. 32Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. 33And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. 34Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, 35the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Catechetical Review

The Lord’s Prayer

The Fifth Petition

And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. What does this mean? We pray in this petition that our Father in heaven would not look at our sins, or deny our prayer because of them. We are neither worthy of the things for which we pray, nor have we deserved them, but we ask that He would give them all to us by grace, for we daily sin much and surely deserve nothing but punishment. So we too will sincerely forgive and gladly do good to those who sin against us.

Epistle2 Peter 1:16–21

16For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For when he received honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,” 18we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain. 19And we have something more sure, the prophetic word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, 20knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Holy GospelMatthew 17:1–9

PThe Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the seventeenth chapter.

CGlory to You, O Lord.

1After six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. 2And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. 3And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” 5He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.9And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”

Sermon

Apostles’ Creed

CI believe in God, the Father Almighty,

     maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

     born of the virgin Mary,

     suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died and was buried.

     He descended into hell.

The third day He rose again from the dead.

     He ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

     the holy Christian Church,

          the communion of saints,

     the forgiveness of sins,

     the resurrection of the body,

and the life + everlasting. Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

COur Father who art in heaven,

     hallowed be Thy name,

     Thy kingdom come,

Thy will be done on earth

          as it is in heaven;

     give us this day our daily bread;

     and forgive us our trespasses

          as we forgive those

          who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

     but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory

     forever and ever. Amen.

415 Jesus on the Mountain Peak

636 Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness

5Jesus, source of lasting pleasure,Truest friend, and dearest treasure,    Peace beyond all understanding,    Joy into all life expanding:Humbly now, I bow before You;Love incarnate, I adore You;    Worthily let me receive You    And, so favored, never leave You.

6Jesus, sun of life, my splendor,Jesus, friend of friends, most tender,    Jesus, joy of my desiring,    Fount of life, my soul inspiring:At Your feet I cry, my maker,Let me be a fit partaker    Of this blessèd food from heaven,    For our good, Your glory, given.

7Lord, by love and mercy driven,You once left Your throne in heaven    On the cross for me to languish    And to die in bitter anguish,To forego all joy and gladnessAnd to shed Your blood in sadness.    By this blood redeemed and living,    Lord, I praise You with thanksgiving.

8Jesus, bread of life, I pray You,Let me gladly here obey You.    By Your love I am invited,    Be Your love with love requited;By this Supper let me measure,Lord, how vast and deep love’s treasure.    Through the gift of grace You give me    As Your guest in heav’n receive me.

Thank the LordLSB 164

Post-Communion Collect

ALet us pray.

We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
