THE MIDWEST'S BILLIARD NEWSLETTER 3From the Editor......

Hello Everyone! I hope you’re all having a great pool season. It’s been over 4 months since I’ve produced a Chalk Talkmagazine, so I have a lot to say. I think I’ll start by saying that I think pool is really taking a great turn right now, and things arereally looking up. If you’ve been to some tournaments in the area, I’m sure you’ve seen me there, handing out fliers and talkingto the players. I’m excited about all I’ve worked hard on building for the players, and I’m not shy about promoting it to everyoneand anyone who will take the time to listen or look at a flier I have. Many players share my enthusiasm, and they ask me to go outthere and call on more casinos, and build more events. I plan on building and expanding the base of pool in the midwest, but I wantto do it at a “more controlled” pace. Everything I do I want to do with a purpose and goal in mind. Every event I schedule I wantto make sure I can get a great turnout from the players. Saturating the market with a ton of events right away, before the base isbuilt, will cause some failures along the way. I don’t want a single failure. Therefore, I will move at a steady pace forward, but notso fast that I can’t gain the support of the players along the way. And right now, from what I’ve seen at the first several eventsI’ve been involved with, the pace is fine and the players are embracing the many new opportunities that have been made availableto them. I thank you - the pool players - for your support, and I pledge to you my continued effort in making every event asuccess. With your help and participation, we can make it happen.

I’d like to talk about the Midwest Poolplayers Association (MPA) for a moment. In my Fall Edition, I stated that I wasexpecting about 7,000 sanctioned players the first year. Obviously, that was my goal. I set my goals high because even if I don’treach them, I get some great numbers, and still get the feeling of success. Many of the leagues that I thought would “blanketsanction” chose not to this year, and because of that, my numbers weren’t as high as expected. But for those who HAVE becomeinvolved, you are already reaping the benefits of the MPA - the great payouts, the fun tournaments, and there’s much more tocome! If you haven’t gotten MPA sanctioned yet, you still have the opportunity to do so, and I’ve enclosed a sanctionapplication inside this edition for your convenience. To become a part of the MPA, just fill it out and send it in along with yoursanction fee, and you will be sanctioned for the rest of the pool season, making you eligible for all upcoming MPA events, including the $25,000 Added Championships at Treasure Island in March.

I’d like to talk about the new MPA website - www.mpapool.com. First, I’d like to tell you that I have had some very fortunatethings happen to me in the past year, and one of the most fortunate is to find a great guy like Scott Norberg. If you don’t knowScott, you really need to meet him. He’s got a dynamic personality and he loves the sport of pool. Scott is gifted with theknowledge of computers and programming, and has done an excellent job in getting the MPA website to a level that rivals manyof the websites that have been out there for years. He pays attention to detail, and with his knowledge behind the website, theMPA is able to maintain a state-of-the-art database of our players, and keep a constant line of communication open to thoseinterested in attending upcoming MPA events. I feel fortunate not only knowing a great guy like Scott, but having him on theMPA team along with me. Make sure you check out the website - www.mpapool - and let us know what you think.

The pool season has already “turned the corner” this season, and in the next couple of months, there are several largeChampionship events that players will be taking part in. I hope that I will see many of you at some of these events, as thousandsof dollars in added money will be offered to those in attendance. I don’t think I’m out of line by saying that I feel confident thatthe $25,000 Added MPA/MNACS Championships at Treasure Island will be an event that players in attendance will talk about foryears to come. And once this season is behind us, these players will be talking to other players, and next year will be even better!

Well, as I reach the bottom of the page, I feel like I have so much more to say. Every day I am thankful for the people I’vemet while doing something I truly enjoy. Setting up pool tables, running pool tournaments, playing in pool tournaments, andpromoting the sport I love is definitely my calling, and I am thankful for the support so many people have shown. I’ve got a greatlong-range plan, and hope that you all continue your support of these plans, and promise you that you will reap the benefits astime goes by. My attitude is 110% positive, and the outlook of pool is a bright one.

I hope you enjoy reading this publication as much as I enjoy writing it. It’s actually pretty ironic. English class was neverone of my favorites, and I always hated writing when I was in school. Yet when I sit down to “compose” this 32-page “assign-ment”, time seems to fly by and my fingers just go crazy, typing as fast as I possibly can without making a huge number ofmistakes. My mind just opens up and my thoughts are transferred to this magazine! My only worry is that I miss someone’s ad,or article, and I will feel bad if I do. But believe me, I try my best to provide to the pool players the most complete regional magazinethat positively promotes the sport we all love to play! There’s a lot more yet to say, and I’ll let this edition do the talking for me.Congratulations to all who have finished well at the tournaments already held, and a big THANK YOU to everyone who hassupported these events. I’m sure I’ll be seeing many of you in the next couple of months. Take Care! John Stich

THE MIDWEST'S BILLIARD NEWSLETTER 7

THE MIDWEST'S BILLIARD NEWSLETTER 9Tons of Tips in January © 2011 Mike Fieldhammer, BilliardCoach.com

In January, I tried to push my writing abilities by undertaking an ambitious project. 31 pool tips in 31 days atwww.billiardcoach.com. Could I give 31 useful tidbits? I tried to provide tips in many categories including Training, Travel,Pool Room Safety, Equipment, Tournament Play, Etiquette, and more. I encourage feedback as well as suggestions on bite-sized topics that I should cover in future articles. Here’s a sampling of four tips that are in the month-long series.

Learning Tip: Pay attention to better players. You’ll have plenty of time in the pool room or at tournaments when you’re notplaying. Spend that time wisely. Find out who the better players are or seek out some professional players. You can learn alot from them. Attitude, Focus, Intensity, and Knowledge of a professional player will inspire and educate you. Watch theirshot selections and their methods of executing shots. If their choices surprise you, ask yourself why that is better than theway you’d have played it. If you can’t see the logic in their choice, ask a better player about the situation or better yet, askthe shooter after his match or later in the day.

Equipment Tip: Don’t skimp on cue tips. Whatever your choice of cue tip is, you must be pleased with the tip’s shape andcondition. Nothing else will do. This will give you confidence in your gear and will translate to a confident stroke.

To see what the rest of the month of January’s tips consist of, please visit www.billiardcoach.com. I may try this again, so ifyou’ve got any killer words of wisdom feel free to send them my way. I’ll be happy to give you credit or keep youanonymous if you submit a winning tip.

Pool Room Safety Tip: Organize your bankroll properly. Most pool players I know don’t carry theirfoldin’ money in their wallets. They stack it up, fold it in half, and stuff it in one of their front pockets.Pick pockets are less likely to get away with a front pocket pick than a back pocket heist.

A banker friend of mine said the only people he knew that carried so many hundred dollar bills aroundwere either pool players or bankers. I suggest putting the large bills in the middle and working outwardtoward the lower value bills. This is so that when you have to grab a couple of singles for a newspaperand a cup of coffee, you don’t need to flip past numerous large bills to grab two one dollar bills.

Folks can see into your wallet sometimes and surmise how much cash you’ve got. If you have a stackof twenty assorted bills in your properly folded bankroll, they won’t know if it’s all ones or a couplethousand bucks. I’m a satisfied money clip user, but like the extra security of using a large rubber bandto keep everything in its place. As my bankroll swells and shrinks, the rubber band always keeps themoney safe and snug. Plus, if I’ve got some loose pocketed dress slacks on, the tacky rubber helpskeep the “BR” in the bottom of my pocket.

I love the rubber bands that you find holding the stalks of broccoli together in your local supermarket.Steam some healthy greens and save the rubber band for your stack of green.

Traveling Tip: Stay awake when driving after a late night of pool. Pool Players frequently have toburn the midnight oil driving home from match-ups or tournaments. Please do so safely. An old farmerjust told me that he had a surefire way to stay awake for an all night drive. Eat popcorn one kernel at atime. He keeps a large bag in his car and swears that the activity of munching one piece of that fluffytreat at a time gives him something to do for hours. I’ve known pool players who eat sunflower seeds, corn nuts and wasabi peas. These could be too filling, too much work, or I could get sick of them. Ienjoy all of these snacks, but believe I’ll give popcorn a try on my next long haul.

This is a more appetizing option than what my dad suggested. He knew a guy who held a big crescentwrench across the steering wheel while he drove. “If it drops, you’ll wake up when it hits your knees.”There are other methods like having the windows down, cranking the tunes, or phoning a friend tostay alert. These could work when you’re driving alone, but when my co-pilot is snoozing, I’ll trychewing some popcorn.

THE MIDWEST'S BILLIARD NEWSLETTER 212nd Annual Fargo Midwinter Shootout – January 21-23- Results

With over $19,000 paid out for the weekend, the second annual Fargo Midwinter Shootout was bigger and better thanthe inaugural event that drew rave reviews a year ago.

The weekend kicked off with a race-to-7 Friday evening 9-ball tournament on the 35 Diamond 7-foot pro am tables thatdrew 60 players wanting to have some fun and gear up for the main 8-ball event.

The two challenge tables—a tight Diamond Professional and a Gabriels Signature Pro—rocked all weekend. And setsof 9-ball, 10-ball, one pocket, 8-ball, and last-pocket 8-ball could be found all over the building.

Eighty two players began their race-to-5 8-ball matches shortly after noon on Saturday, but not before enjoying acomplimentary breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, bagels, and a taste of Tanya’s home-baked muffins.

Lee Heuwagen of Minneapolis plowed his way to the driver’s seat with wins over Larry Wentz, 9-ball champion JamiePluta, Johnny Meyer, Aaron Williamson, Dean Flanders, and Marc Oelslager. Accomplished young player Justin Bergman of theSt. Louis area, who must have made a wrong turn on his way to Derby City, would win the B-side. Bergman’s long ride beforethe weekend continued after a fourth-round loss to Canadian Jerrod Spence required him to prevail over Neal Cook, Dave Olson,Craig Stainbrook, Dean Flanders, Jerrod Spence, Marc Oelslager, and Danny Olson to face Heuwagen in the finals.

Lee Heuwagen won the first set of the finals to win the tournament and to join Shane Van Boening in the exclusive FargoMidwinter Shootout 8-Ball Champion club.8-Ball Results1. THE MIDWEST'S BILLIARD NEWSLETTER 272010 Wilde Cup Results

Submitted by Jeff Maurer

The 2010 Wilde Cup was another success story worth sharing. This is our 11th year of raising money for a good cause, remembering someone who will be missed by the pool world and, of course, a pool tournament. This year we had around 85players. Again, this is a "non-sanctioned event" and I truly believe we draw new players in to this game every year. This year weremembered Geri Neudecker from New Ulm. Geri was married to Gary Neudecker and left us unexpectedly at a very young age.Geri left with us, two children, age 10 and 6. So, this year's proceeds ($1500) was given to an education fund for the children to usewhen they turn 18. This event has many wonderful sponsors which allows us to give over 100% back to the pool tournament, while allowing us to raffle off many donated items from gift cards, hats, shirts…..right up to pool cues other larger ticket items.Mike Lowe went through the winners side and guaranteed 2nd place before being called away. Mike has won this event in thepast and decided to let Max Kraus and Kris Brenke do battle for this year's title on the men's side. Max edged out Kris on the hillto win the right of having his name engraved in to our Wilde Cup Trophy. The women's side had Amanda Aning winning her firstWilde Cup Title as she beat out teammate and former Wilde Cup champ, Kristina Peterson. Marge Forst was 3rd.

This event is many things before it is a pool tournament and I thank Lori Wilde, Dan Telshaw, Bob Taylor and OwenDundas for helping create a phenomonal, congenial, fun-loving atmosphere. I expect this event to continue to grow as it is onelike no other. Thank you all who participated this year, past years and please come back in 2011.

I’ve Known Paul for 20 years. He’s an avid pool player and has played leagues for two decades. I think we should supportthose who support the sport we all love playing!! If you need computer repair, give him a call! John Stich
