FREEPORT ART MUSEUM

2015 marks an important milestone for the Freeport Art Museum. Celebrating our 40th anniversary, this year provides us an excellent opportunity for us to reflect on our accomplishments and recognize those who helped shape the museum into the vibrant visual arts organization it is today. We plan to celebrate in a number of ways both small and large, beginning with a special exhibition this summer featuring pieces from the collection that have not been on display for many years plus guest contributors and a commemorative catalog. We are amping up our donor recognition with a new donor wall located at the main entrance to acknowledge all those who help build and sustain FAM each year and we will launch a one-time only membership opportunity, which comes with some excellent benefits. Our Fall annual dinner gala will provide the grand finale for our anniversary celebration. This year’s theme is everything 40’s so get ready to dine and dance the night away while enjoying a gourmet dinner, photo booths and fun, artistic ways to be involved throughout the evening. Until then, I hope to see you at the museum soon for one of the many upcoming exhibition openings.

In partnership with One Book, One Freeport, the Freeport Art Museum presents this exhibition about coal mining. Featuring photographs and artifacts, these works highlight the lives of coal miners and reveal the hardships of daily life in coal mining towns during the early to mid 1900’s. The exhibition was organized to provide a fitting backdrop for this year’s chosen book, Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam. Set in the mining town of Coalwood, West Virginia, Rocket Boys is a powerful coming of age story about a group of young boys who dream of launching rockets into outer space. FAM would like to offer a special thanks to the following for their contributions: Catherine and Ed Finch, the Freeport Public Library, David Johnson, Bob Kaplow, the Library of Congress, the Moweaqua Coal Mine Museum, the Princeton Public Library and Randy Skeens.

The juror for this year’s exhibition was Theresa Abel, owner of the Artisan Gallery in Paoli, WI. Abel received a BFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and also studied abroad at the Scuola Lorenzo de Medici in Florence, Italy.

Thank you to our corporate exhibition sponsor Furst-McNess

Wine, Cheese & Chocolate 2015

This year’s Wine, Cheese and Chocolate event was another great success. We brought back the chocolate and continued the popular scotch tasting. The event raised over $7,000 for the museum and we would like to thank everyone involved, particularly Judi Buus for her work on the silent auction, Royal Liquor, The Cheese Market, Lessman Catering and those who donated items and purchased silent auction baskets. We look forward to next year and hope to see you there.

Feeding Freeport’s HungryThrough the ArtsThe Freeport High School art department is gearing up for its 7th year of Empty Bowls and we are honored to host the event at the Freeport Art Museum.

Guests will receive a modest meal of soup and bread, donated by generous local restaurants, and will also be able to select a beautiful hand crafted bowl to take home as a reminder that in this world, there are always empty bowls to fill.

Tickets – $10 at the door.

Our signature exhibition for 2015 presents works from the collections of the museum alongside archival photographs and written documents

commemorating the history of the organization. The Freeport Art Museum began as the Highland Area Arts Council in 1975, founded by a group of artists from the area with a mission to present exhibitions and to publish a newsletter. Operating as a gallery without walls, it was not until the next year that the fledgling organization was

given its first collection of art: the W.T. Rawleigh collection of European, Native American and Asian art. First housed within the Henney School building located at the current site for the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the museum later moved to Harlem School in 1982. This retrospective exhibition is presented in two formats, one is a selection of objects that represent the time line of acquisitions and the other provides examples of noteworthy past exhibitions. Interactive activities allow visitors to add their memories to the time line of events and a full-color commemorative catalog will be published that includes essays by previous directors, curators and founders of the museum throughout its history.

40th Anniversary Retrospective

Reception: Friday, July 31st 5-7 PMJuly 31 - October 31, 2015

This exciting biennial fundraising exhibition challenges artists to create art on a miniature scale and then display their talent with others in the main galleries of the museum. All accepted works are generously donated to the special event silent auction, held during the reception, where invited guests and artists will have the opportunity to out-bid each other for their favorites. Proceeds from the auction and reception benefit the museum and help fund FAM’s mission to ensure the future of the arts and art education in our community.Call to Artists- To become a participating artist, please review the guidelines on the museum’s website and RSVP by March 6th.

Don’t miss the continuing exhibits of work by area students in the 2nd floor Student Gallery. If you know of an ambitious student from Junior High, High School, or college that would like to install a solo exhibition in this space, please encourage them to contact the museum to discuss the possibilities. This is a great opportunity for students to gain skills in displaying their work in a formal gallery setting.

Student Gallery Arts Magnetism

FAM and Jones-Farrar magnet school are proud to announce the support of the Arts Magnetism program for a second term. Based on the overwhelmingly positive response from the previous year, generous private donors along with the Freeport Community Foundation and the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois provided funds in order to allow the program to continue in 2015. Youth in grades 1 through 4 have art from the museum’s collections brought directly to their classrooms where they receive hands-on art instruction by FAM staff designed to enhance each grades specific curriculum. Students have already been exploring wind energy in relationship to kinetic art and about the environment when considering art made from repurposed and recycled materials. Later they will design inventions and discover how creative processes can help solve complex problems. At the end of the Spring semester all participating students have a chance to tour the museum galleries and the conclusion of Arts Magnetism is celebrated with an exhibition within the halls and classrooms at Jones-Farrar. Parents, friends and FAM members are invited to witness the creative results of this program.

Carrie is a local artist who paints with acrylic over textures created by mixes of modeling paste,

One Book, One Freeport

One Book, One Freeport is a biennial reading program organized by the Freeport Public Library. This year’s book selection is Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam. The book was chosen because the theme of economic adversity resonates with the current situation in Freeport, and because Microswitch, a company that provided equipment for the aerospace program over the years, is located in the area.

A varied series of programs will take place from February to April 2015 at different locations around the city including book discussions, lectures on topics related to the book, a display at the library and the visitors’ center by Microswitch, screenings at the Lindo Theatre, and programs regarding space and rockets at Highland Community College and the Freeport Art Museum.

The inaugural One Book, One Freeport reading program ran in 2011 and was modeled after the “If All Seattle Read the Same Book” program developed by Nancy Pearl in 1998. The mission of the program is to encourage a shared reading experience, foster a sense of community and promote literacy to people of all ethnic backgrounds, economic levels and ages. Based on similar programs in communities across the country, One Book, One Freeport provides free copies of a selected book and coordinates educational programs and events to explore topics related to the book.

About the book Rocket BoysRocket Boys is a memoir about growing up in a poor mining town and the author’s fascination with amateur rocketry and his aspirations to become a rocket scientist. The story is set in the author’s hometown of Coalwood, West Virginia, where he and his companions turn one young man’s curiosity into a project that captivates the entire town.
