FREEPORT ART MUSEUM

As the summer winds down, here at the museum we are winding up for a season brimming with activity. We are excited to open a pop-up exhibition in downtown Freeport, the first of it’s kind for FAM. The term ‘pop-up’ has been used for decades to describe short term exhibitions or galleries that are quickly produced and just as quickly disappear. In recent years these types of shows have been increasingly popular to the point where even large museums and galleries have hosted exhibitions outside of their facilities. Why, you ask? Well, first they create an atmosphere of fun. But more importantly they can also be helpful to their communities. Often occurring in vacant buildings because they are readily available and free to use, these shows allow opportunities for people to experience the space in a completely new way which has sometimes led to attracting new tenants. Will this happen in our case? Who knows. Regardless, we are proud to present this amazing show by these talented and generous artists in the heart of our downtown.

ABOUT THE ARTISTSUnintentionally shirking convention, Jesus Correa weaves in and out of genres and categories. For the past ten years his work has been featured in a number of galleries across the region. In addition to making fine art, he is also an illustrator whose comic book was published and released in August. After studying art at Rockford College in the mid-1970’s, John Deill co-owned and operated Gallery Dubois. There he joined the Old Post Office Group and helped form their co-op gallery, organizing group shows in the area until 1995. His work has been featured in countless exhibitions and has won numerous awards including the prestigious Jessica Holt award from the Rockford Art Museum. Co-Owners of MainFraim, a custom framing, lighting and sculpture studio in Rockford, Jeremy Klonicki and Carmen Turner have successfully turned their inspiration and passion for things forgotten into a thriving business catering to a variety of clients looking to add artistic invention to otherwise functional objects. The exhibition will be open on Saturdays from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm through November 8th.

A unique exhibition located in an uncharacteristic space, Refind introduces a group of talented individuals who create art from salvaged materials. Saved from obscurity and often the landfill, these materials are not simply repurposed but are carefully formed into beautiful, unique works of art. Held in a vacant building located at the corners of Main and VanBuren in downtown Freeport, this reclaimed space provides a fitting backdrop for works made by these participating area artists: Jesus Correa, John Deill, Jeremy Klonicki and Carmen Turner.

Paintings by Ellen BartelsAugust 26 - November 1, 2014

Freeport artist Ellen Bartels displays her RED, YELLOW, BLACK series at the FHN Gallery. The goal of these works, she explains, is to evoke different responses and emotions in the viewer based on their own personal associations. “Because our associations with color come from a complex assortment of

sources and cultures, the works mean something different to each individual viewer.”

The Freeport Art Museum is excited to announce plans for the 24th annual dinner gala fund-raiser. We invite you to help us to build on the success of the sold-out crowd and amazing live art at last year’s Urban Canvas event with your attendance.

This year’s theme is based on the innovative pop-up exhibition REFIND located in the now vacant historic building at 28 W. Main Street. Working with artists who specialize in using salvaged materials in their work, we have reclaimed this empty space, if only for a short time.

Guests are encouraged to have fun by selecting attire that reflects the theme. Ladies, have a great period dress from a bygone era? Perfect! Gentlemen, want to show your best take on a 1960’s Mad Men style suit--now is your chance! So, dress in your best REfinery and celebrate the arts with us in downtown Freeport.

TICKETS ARE $95 EACH and can be purchased by mail, phone or online at www.freeportartmuseum.org.
