The Rector Writes…….

It is almost impossible to find an adjective that can fully or even adequately describe the last few months. COVID-19 has affected all our lives. No two people will have experienced the same set of circumstances. For some this virus will leave memories of death and disaster for others broken dreams and cancelled plans for others isolation and separation. For many the last few months have been lived in a state of uncertainty leading to anxiety and for others this time has been one of precious respite. And as lockdown appears to be slowly easing, we each have to navigate how we step back into community and pick up the pieces of our past life or forge a new one. Such decisions are intensely individual and linked to our own personal circumstances.

I've been lucky enough to have conversations with many people over the last few months and it is abundantly clear that COVID-19 has given many people the chance to reassess their lives. Some have found working from home to be liberating, vowing if possible, to never return to the daily commute. Others have greatly missed the social aspect of their work and cannot wait to return to an office. Many who are home-schooling children have a new respect for teachers and yet most have really enjoyed being together as families in a way they never have before, cooking and eating, working and walking together. There are very few who cannot have noticed how important our natural world has been to us over the last few months. Many is the time I have heard people comment upon how hard it must be for families cooped up in a high-rise block of flats in a large city. We have a new appreciation for our green spaces and gardens, and around the world we have seen pollution levels lifting as humankind has stayed at home.

With everything shut not only have we spent less money we have been challenged about the things we previously thought essential. And hearteningly we have seen communities work together and countless people volunteering or raising funds to help others. The last few months have offered many of us the chance to step back and reflect on the way we have been living our lives. Yes, we have grasped the opportunity to get on top of gardening, household and paperwork backlogs but far greater has been the reengagement with the simple things in life. This time of enforced isolation has re-opened our eyes to the value of our health and freedom, importance of the natural world and the gift of family, friends and neighbours.

Page 6

Page 7: THE LINK 50p...e-mail: etdavies1@btinternet.com Tarporley: St Helen Churchwardens Phillip Posnett, Haughton Hall,. Tarporley CW6 9RH 260251 Liz 07890Neely email neelyeliza@hotmail.com

And so, the easing of lockdown brings with it a vast range of emotions and resolutions. There are some who are nervous about re-engaging with a former lifestyle. There are some who are raring to go, anxious to make up for "lost time”. There will be many carrying loss and others seeking opportunity. For every one person who sees no need for restrictions there will be another who is grateful for them and these individuals cannot be packaged to neatly fit a government stereotype of ‘vulnerability’. The truth is that as restrictions are eased each of us is going to have to make our own decisions about how we re-engage with community and continue with our lives. Here in church we have been undergoing thorough risk assessments to see how we can safely open up buildings and in time, when we are allowed, we will be doing the same to see how we can begin worshipping again. We do this to try and minimise risk understanding that all risk can never be totally eliminated, which is why it is up to each one of us to decide for ourselves how we navigate the months ahead.

Regardless of how long it takes to come completely out of lockdown, I hope that, as individuals, community and society, we will be able to carry forward the blessings we have discovered in this period that has been forced upon us. Hopefully we are all a little better at reflection; hopefully we are a little better at conversation; hopefully we are a little better at keeping in touch with those we love; hopefully we are all a little better at making use of what we have rather than looking to buy more; hopefully we are all a little more grateful for our food and better at cooking; hopefully we are all a little more appreciative of our local retailers; hopefully we have a new respect and appreciation for key workers, the people who we actually rely upon to live our daily lives but are so often overlooked and underpaid; hopefully we are all a little more attuned to the consequences of our footprint on the natural world; hopefully our world can find a way to carry forward and build upon all that is good whilst allowing time and opportunity to heal what has been bad.

And where is God in all of this? I have had conversations with some people who feel that Covid is either God-given or a God-given opportunity for us to reassess where we are going wrong with our consumerism and mistreatment of each other and the planet. I've had conversations with others who have lost a loved one, much cherished plans, a job or a business to whom such a view is abhorrent. The question of where God is in our suffering, is age-old. But I am firmly of the view that God does not cause these disasters that God does not inflict such wanton suffering upon us. I understand that God’s perfect creation has become broken through the mistakes, and consequences of those mistakes, made by generation after generation of humans. ( continued overleaf )

Page 8: THE LINK 50p...e-mail: etdavies1@btinternet.com Tarporley: St Helen Churchwardens Phillip Posnett, Haughton Hall,. Tarporley CW6 9RH 260251 Liz 07890Neely email neelyeliza@hotmail.com

I do not believe that the judgment of God is seen in disaster or suffering but rather that it is through such times His compassion and mercy shines. He does not stand back and leave us to our mess, rather he is right in the middle with us, giving us the strength, skills and resources to find a way through. And of course, for those who suffer the most, for those who die, He has promised, through the life, death and resurrection of Christ, that despite its horror and apparent finality even death is not the end of the story.

So, I remain hopeful. I remain hopeful that individually and collectively we will learn and carry with us much that is good from these last few months. I pray that each of us will find the way out of our current restrictions in a way that is right for them, without judgment or unkindness. I pray that the positive resolutions you have come to during this period can be carried forward. I pray for a better use of resources and care of our world. I pray for wisdom for those in positions of authority. I pray for a blessing on our key workers and an ongoing appreciation for them that translates into better pay and conditions. I pray for solace for those who have lost loved ones or had to endure broken relationships. I pray for new life and direction for those who have lost jobs or businesses. I pray for a new vision for those whose dreams have been shattered. I pray for our schools and universities, our families and our future. And as a Christian I pray for faith communities around the world that we will continue to be shining lights of justice, hope and love.

With every blessing Georgina

“The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.”

Many of you have learnt to embrace new technology during the last few months and most of us have had to find new ways of doing things. On June 8

th

the PCC conducted its first virtual zoom meeting at the end of which I read a statement that announced I would be stepping down as Rector here in Tarporley at the end of December. As soon as the meeting was finished, I emailed this statement to everyone on the databases I hold. My intention was to try and let everyone know at the same time, so it is with an apology that I copy the statement that follows these words for any who may not have had the opportunity to read it.

I have been touched by the number of you who have written to tell me something about how I have helped you or what my ministry has meant in this place, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart, hoping I have replied personally to you all. I will keep these emails and letters as a mark of God’s life

Page 8

Page 9: THE LINK 50p...e-mail: etdavies1@btinternet.com Tarporley: St Helen Churchwardens Phillip Posnett, Haughton Hall,. Tarporley CW6 9RH 260251 Liz 07890Neely email neelyeliza@hotmail.com

and love in this place and a personal encouragement to me in whatever the future holds. I am sorry for any disappointment or hurt that this announcement has caused, that was obviously never my intention.

God’s Timing

I have always had a very strong sense of God’s timing: Kairos, as opposed to our timing which is known as Chronos. My personal journey of faith has been heavily marked and determined by God’s timing. I have often wanted to do things when the Holy Spirit has made clear that the time, or that way at that time, was not right and similarly God has sometimes had to tell me quite forcefully when the time was right for action. I have known for some time that God was asking me to move on from Tarporley, and

the timing of that has now crystallised to be ‘right’ for the end of December. Julian will be ordained at the beginning of October and so by the New Year be in a strong position to help the Parish through a vacancy and flourish in so doing.

The next six months will also allow the Parish ample time to put together the thoughts and paperwork that will help to discern and appoint the next Rector of Tarporley. I also sincerely hope that this length of time will mean we have months of meaningful and joyous worship services to share together before I leave.

The Psalm set for the main service on the day I made my announcement was 121 (printed overleaf). This is one of the Psalms of Ascent, songs that were sung as pilgrims moved towards the holy city of Jerusalem. As you will know, ‘Jerusalem’ in the bible signifies more than just the physical city, it can also mean God’s people or the eternal city we might call heaven. This happens to be one of my favourite psalms. It sings of God’s protection and I often use it at funerals or interments because it acknowledges that He will look after us ‘for evermore’. But this psalm is powerful at any stage of our life. It helps us remember God’s constant and overarching love for us at every stage of our journey toward the eternal city. This will be my prayer in the months ahead for you individually and the Parish collectively. I will pray that you will be reassured that the Lord is with you and will help you and that you will have the confidence to lift your eyes to him and trust him with your ongoing journey in this place.

Psalm 121 King James Version (KJV)

I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.

2 My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.

3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.

4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.

6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.

8 The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth,

and even for evermore.

Announcement

It is with a mixture of emotions that I announce I will be stepping down as Rector of Tarporley at the end of the year.

By then, it will be over six years since my appointment. During that time, we have achieved much. We have built up our worshipping communities and lay involvement. We now have services that encompass a much broader range of Christian liturgy and far more lay involvement, all of which enriches our worship and helps us see that we all have a part to play in Christian ministry.

We have provided training for several ordinands and welcomed Julian as our Curate. Through a successful stewardship campaign and the hard work of church, fabric and resources committees, our buildings and finances are on a sound footing. Consistent attention to administrative detail and records has allowed us to improve communication and reach out more effectively. This has been no more important than in the last few weeks when we have all quickly become part of a virtual or digital church.

Lectures and courses have helped to deepen our discipleship and led to over 40 people being confirmed. We have worked hard and consistently to build our relationship with the wider community including all five of our local schools, the local councils and communities. Our transformed Remembrance Service and the success of the ‘Here But Not Here’ exhibition are both fruits of this ongoing work. I have also had the privilege of twice being chaplain to the High Sheriff. We should all be proud of how much we have achieved together in the love of Christ for the glory of God and through the power of the Holy Spirit.

So, this decision is not lightly made but rather one I have been reflecting upon for some time and I have already informed the Archdeacon and Bishop. What the last few weeks have provided is further space for prayer which has crystallised my belief that God is now calling me to step away and that this is the right time for a new Rector to lead a post-Covid ministry in Tarporley.

At the moment I have no intention of going anywhere else as a vicar, frankly it is hard to imagine there could be a nicer post. I will go carrying prayers for my successor and all of you I will go carrying thanks for your support, all you have taught me and all I have learnt I will go carrying sorrow for any disappointment or hurt I may leave behind I will go carrying my love for you in my heart I will go wherever God may lead.

Real skills, real flowers and virtual Flower show! Elaine Hulton writes:- Two Members of the St Helens Church Flower Arranging Team enter virtual Floral Art Competition

As the Cheshire Agricultural Society is unable to open physically this year it is putting on a virtual show for 2020.

Carole Chia and Elaine Hulton who enjoy assisting with church flowers at Christmas, Harvest and Easter decided to put their skills to the test. Through being keen members of Tarporley Flower Club they had the opportunity to each design an arrangement in their own homes during lockdown and enter the photographed design into the virtual Floral Art competition.

The competition had been arranged through the Cheshire Branch of NAFAS (National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies) who decided the title should be “Anything Goes At the Cheshire Show” This gave great scope to Carole and Elaine who as you can see below entered completely different styles. Nafas are expecting a large number of entries which will be on display on the Royal Cheshire Show website from 16th June. Please check out the Theatre of Flowers section of the website. The designs will be judged by Nafas qualified judges. At the time of writing this article Elaine and Carole feel like students waiting for their results!!

Their arrangements are shown overleaf.

Carole’s and Elaine’s entries to the show

You can marvel at the skills of people and the beauty of nature above and, if you dare, judge their offerings yourselves. My vote is for a tie for first place! (Editor)

The wonders of God’s creation and the fruits of our labour are also eloquently expressed without words in this photograph (right) taken by Georgina in St Helen’s churchyard. Thank you to all those who maintain our church grounds throughout the year.

Finally, Two extra pages possible because we are not able to print and distribute as normal.

Amongst the ways in which Georgina (together with yourselves) has been lifting our spirits over the last 12 weeks has been the emailing of ‘Ps in our Time’ to parishioners and others. As we begin the careful journey to the ‘new normal’ I add an excerpt from the last P’s. It is taken from an item by Peter Holloway.

1 Jesus will walk with me down through the valley, Jesus will walk with me over the plain. When in the shadow, or when in the sunshine, I know He will walk with me.

Chorus Jesus will walk with me and he will talk with me, Jesus will walk with me talk with me still; In joy or sorrow, today and tomorrow, I know He will walk with me

2 Jesus will walk with me when I am tempted, Giving me strength as my need may demand; When in affliction, His presence is near me I’m held in His mighty hand

3 Jesus will walk with me, guarding me, keeping me, Giving me victory over my sin, He is my counsel, my comfort, my leader And so I will walk with Him.

Please keep sending in spiritually uplifting items.
