PLANS have been submitted for acontroversial housing development on a

site off Nantwich Road, in Tarporley.

    Developers FLP lodged the application

with Cheshire West and Chester Council

for 100 new homes, including 30 affordable

    houses.

Local reaction has mostly against the

scheme. Over 650 signatures have been

gathered in opposition to the scheme

    by the Tarporley Greeneld Awareness

    Project. Parish councillors have also

opposed the project as it is outside the area

    designated for development in Tarporley.

    Campaigner Michael George, from the

    Tarporley Greeneld Awareness Project, is

asking people to make an ofcial objection

to CWaC. He says the level of opposition

is a clear sign that the development is not

wanted.Martyn Twigg of FLP said: Tarporley has

been identied by the as a sustainable

    settlement that could accommodate a

sizeable portion of almost 5,000 new homes

required in the rural area of the Borough

    over the next 15 years.

Whilst we know proposals for change often

raise concerns for residents, we have been

pleased with the level of interest shown by

the community in the proposals, in particular

the number of local Tarporley people

who have expressed a keen interest in

purchasing an affordable house on the site.

Results from the Parish Councils QuestionnaireTarporley Parish Council carried out a survey on the views of people in the town on

the proposals to build the houses off Nantwich Road. To date the council has received

around 130 replies, about 10% of the villages households.

    The results are as follows

l 95% thought that land inside Tarporleys boundary should be built on beforeconsidering building on land outside it.

l 98% agreed that designated affordable houses with a value of 225,000 are beyond

the reach many young people living and/or working in Tarporley.

l 96% thought that the unique character of Tarporley would be changed by building an

    estate of around 100 houses.

l 92% thought building outside the settlement boundary should only be allowed if the

site is designated as a rural exception site (basically one where only affordable houses,

leisure and community facilities and open green spaces are allowed).

l 48% were interested in helping the Parish Council draw up a Neighbourhood Plan forthe village.

Tarporley Community Centre NewsDid you know:

l Tarporley Community Centre is NOT managed or fnanced by Tarporley Parish

Cuncil r Cheshire West and Chester Cuncil.

l A cmmittee f vlunteers wh ffer their services fr free runs it.

l Its incme and existence relies slely n letting fees.

l It csts apprximately 1,000 per mnth t meet annual running csts.

Tarporley Parish Council recognizes the value of the Centre and regards it as a very

important village asset. A wide range of people from the village and surrounding areas,

including childrens dancing and exercise classes, young peoples youth and army cadetactivities and older people engaging in exercise and special interest clubs etc, use the

centre on a regular basis. It is therefore regarded as being key to village life and its survival

is seen as essential. The Parish Council very much

appreciates the work of the committee in managing

the ever-increasing amount of work in an

atmosphere of constant changes in legislation

particularly in regard to health and safety

    issues.

    Recent inspections, however, indicate that

the centre has some urgent work to becarried out involving the upgrading of re

exits, re detection and alarms systems and

the electrical installation. Some of this work

needs to be completed within four weeks and

can be managed within cash reserves. An estimated

total cost of 18,000 to 20,000 needs to be spent within

the next three months in order to bring the centre up to required

standards. The management committee is currently seeking ways of

    managing this situation.

Perhaps not so pressing but, in addition, roof leaks are becoming more common and arecent inspection has revealed that a long-term solution is required. The wooden oors in

the main hall and Craven room require attention. The management committee also has

aspirations to bring the main hall audio/visual equipment into the 21st century in order to

facilitate dvd/lm and power point presentations.

Councillor Graham Lees has been the Parish Council representative on the management

committee for a number of years. He has decided not to stand for re-election at the AGM to

be held in November and Councillor Linda Bennett has agreed to take over this role.

The committee needs additional volunteers to come forward and offer assistance in

handling routine management tasks. If you feel you could give back some time to benet

your community in this important way please contact Linda Martin on 01829 732026.

Do I need to take a multivitamin

    as I get older?

With todays hectic lifestyles, anincreasing number of women are

    choosing to supplement their diets

    with additional nutrients. Scientific

research has shown this to be even

more important as we get older and

    the bodys nutritional requirements

    increase.

As we age, we are generally more at

risk of suffering loss of bone densityor osteoporosis. The most abundant

nutrients in bone are calcium and

    magnesium, but bones also need

vitamins D and K as well as the

minerals zinc and boron for their

    structure.

The brain and nervous system are

very complex and are particularlysusceptible to degenerative

    conditions like Parkinsons and

    Alzheimers disease. Antioxidant

nutrients such as vitamins A, C

and E, selenium and zinc play an

    important role in the protection

of brain and nerve cells and the

    B-complex vitamins help to

    promote optimal nerve and brainfunction.

Around the time of the menopause,

    hormone production is reduced, but

    some women find soya isoflavones,

    which are classed as phytoestrogens

    (plant copies of oestrogen) supportive.

A healthy immune system is vital if

general ill-health and disease are to

    be avoided. Antioxidants and vitamin

D are particularly important for the

    proper functioning of the immune

    system.

    Research has shown an increased

risk of developing diabetes later in

    life. Controlling blood-sugar levels

is therefore vital in trying to prevent

    this disease. The mineral chromium

works with insulin to regulate blood

sugar levels and aids in the proper

    metabolism of carbohydrates.

    Lutein is found in high

concentrations in the macularwithin the eye. Low levels of this

    carotenoid have been observed in

those who suffer with Age Related

    Macular Degeneration.

All nutrients mentioned can be found

their induction programme. Designed to build

relationships within tutor groups as well as with

some of the key staff who work with the

Sixth Form, the three days help prepare

our students for A Level study by giving

them information and skills which will help

them to enjoy Sixth Form life and to besuccessful over the next two years. The

activities are scored and the tutor group

with the most points at the end of the week

is awarded the Conway Challenge Trophy.

The activities are all designed to test a

range of skills which will prove useful at A

Level and beyond. As usual, the students

    Q. Im looking to buy an eye cream,

    what can you recommend?

    A. You dont mention your age, or what you would like to

achieve by using an eye cream, and its difcult to make an

individual recommendation without a skin analysis. However,

whatever age you are or whatever results you are looking for

the single most important thing to look for in an eye cream

that you will be wearing during the day is sunscreen. I am

always amazed at the amount of skin care ranges that

have eye creams with no sunscreen in them! The skinaround the eyes is thinner and more delicate

than skin anywhere else on your face so protect

it all year round with a special eye product that

    contains sunscreen. Reserve the products

without sunscreen for night use only. For top

tips on looking after the delicate skin aroundyour eyes visit the newsletter page at www.

    angelabartlett.co.uk

    Q. I like having gel nails as they give

strength and gloss to my nails, but I

cant wear colour on my nails for work.

    What can you suggest?

    A. Many of our clients love the fact that they

dont have to bother replacing their varnish

colour for two to three weeks, but wearing colouris not suitable for everyones lifestyle. For clients

like yourself the answer is to have a clear gel

applied to give strength and gloss and then just

paint them with nail varnish when you want to

wear a colour. The varnish can then be removed

with a non-acetone varnish remover without

affecting the gel underneath. For more tips on

how to care for your gel nails at home visit the

    FoURTEEN-year-ld Millie

    Hawes raised an astunding

29,000 fr the SMA Trust by

cmpleting a gruelling 80 milewheelchair marathn acrss the

    Lake Districts Miles withut

    Stiles.

    Millie, who has Spinal Muscular

Atrophy (SMA), had to cope with

    torrential rain, exhausted batteries

and, in places, terrain too rugged

    for many wheelchairs to complete

    her personal challenge. The hope

is that this money will help nd acure for this debilitating condition.

Millie was born with SMA, a

    genetic condition which affects

muscle development and has meant she

has never been able to walk, stand or even

crawl. Despite these obstacles, she was

determined to nd some physical challenge

which would help her raise money to fund

research into a cure for other children like

her. Having looked at a number of different

walks across the UK she found the Lake

    District National Parks Miles without

Stiles, a series of over 40 walks accessible

to wheelchair users. Millie therefore set

herself the challenge of completing as many

of these walks as possible within four days

come rain or shine or at tyres.

    Tough challenge

The SMA Trust is a charity which fundsresearch into Spinal Muscular Atrophy

(SMA). SMA is a genetic disease which

is responsible for taking more lives of

babies, toddlers and children than any other

    inherited condition.

Millie, who lives in Alpraham, says: This

was a much tougher challenge than I

had expected as there were so many

steep slopes, boulders and large areas of

mud. Driving my wheelchair was virtually

impossible at times as I couldnt keep my

balance as I was bounced around. I have

the bruises to show for it but Im so happy

that I have raised so much money for The

    SMA Trust.

Even though I have never walked, I have

been lucky because I have always had

    fantastic wheelchairs, friends and family

who have helped me do whatever I have

wanted to do. Thousands of other families

like mine who live with SMA hope for a cure

so we can live a more normal life. I hope

that the money I have raised will help the

    incredible people researching a cure.

    Support

Millie completed her walk in August having

walked all but one of the Miles withoutStiles routes. On the road by nine each

morning and not nishing before 8pm, she

racked up around 80 miles over four and a

half days using two electric wheelchairs, an

endless supply of chocolate and the support

of a number of friends and family.

You can still sponsor Millie directly by

    donating online at www.justgiving.com/team-

AT this time of the year as the weather swings from being warm and sunny one day to cold,

dark and autumnal the next, its impossible to know what youre going to feel like eating, never mind drinking from one day to another. So its always quite useful to have in three

staple wines that are great to have in during this most changeable of months. The wines

Ive chosen to recommend here are the three that proved most popular at a recent tasting I

taught on wines that are easy to get hold of and easy on the wallet!

    Sparkle

The rst is a Sparkling Crmant de Jura Chardonnay, Philippe Michel from Aldi (6.99).

This light, refreshing citrusy zz is a real bargain for the price and already has numerous

awards to its name. It is made by the same method as Champagne, although it is aged for

less time so it has a more delicate style. This Crmant is created from grapes grown on the

cool slopes of the Jura Mountains on the border of Switzerland and north eastern France.

It is perfect as an aperitif, and not so pricey that you couldnt use it with a dash of crme de

cassis or if pairing with food, why not try it with a goats cheese salad.

    Fresh and fruity

If youre looking for something a bit different for a white, try the Barossa Valley Semillon

(pronounced Sem-ee-on) by Peter Lehman (at the time it was on offer at Tesco for 5.79).

Not so well known as the Sauvignon Blanc

or Chardonnay grape, its a perfect in-

between sort of wine. By this I mean it is

still fresh and fruity but without the piercingacidity of a Sauvignon and it has a good

body to it but no way near that of a creamy

oaked Chardonnay. This would be perfect

with oriental sh dishes such as sea bass

    with chili and lime.

    Warming red

And nally a staple red that you cant

go wrong with is McGuigans Brothers

Black Label red. A bargain for 5.99 from

believe it or not, Bargain Booze! A blend ofdifferent grape varieties from South Eastern

Australia, this a soft, warming red with hints

of spice that is perfect for those Friday

evenings on the sofa at the end of a tough

    week.

Gill teaches regular wine tasting courses

and is the owner of Dee Fine Wine, a

wine tasting events company based in

    the historic city of Chester.

    FOOTBALL TALK...TArPOrLEY VICs FC

TARPORLEY Vics First Team has only one

win to celebrate from the opening eight league

games of the 2011/2012 season. The lengthy

injury and non-availability list has meant that

both the First Team and the Reserves have

had to balance the available players across

both teams, with the First Team struggling to

match up to quality rst division sides such as

Gamesley FC & Garswood FC. The only win

was achieved at StyalFC, where Edward

    Pattinson scored a late

    winner, after Styal had

    equalised Tarporleys

    early goal.

    The Cheshire Cup tie

    against Capenhurst

    Villa ended in a

    disappointing 4-2

    defeat. Whilst TarporleyVics played some

    excellent football

    and ended the rst

    half equal at 1-1,

    Capenhurst were able

to move up a gear and they powered into a 4-1

lead early in the second half.

Tarporley Vics Reserves have been able to

maintain their good form in spite of all the

changes in playing personnel. Scott Armstrongcontinues to nd the back of the net and has

amassed eight goals in the rst ve games,

and the Reserves are in third position in the

League and winning three of these games.

Tarporley Vics Reserves also claimed the

notable scalp of Chester Nomads in the

    Chester & District Cup.

Tarporley Vics are very grateful to Stewart

Milne Homes as this seasons match and

training ball sponsors. The presentation, which

coincided with the opening of a new show

home at Heathelds, was made by Dianne

Sandells, from Stewart Milne Homes to Andrew

Moreton Manager of Tarporley Vics Under-11

team with members of the senior and junior

    squads in attendance.

Tarporley Vics are pleased to announce

that they are holding a Dinner Dance at

Peckforton Castle on Saturday 22nd October.

    The evening, whichcelebrates the

    recently announced

    kit sponsorship by

    Peckforton Castle,

    will include a three

    course dinner which

    will be followed by

    comedy provided

    by Chris Cairns,

    an award winningcomedian from

    Liverpool. Guests

    will then be able to

    dance into the early

    hours to Andy from

Different DJs Limited. Please contact any

member of the committee or players for tickets

to this prestigious event which will include an

    auction of sporting items.

    Tarporley, Bunbury & District

Historical SocietyThe Society has a very distinguished series of speakers this season, with David Hayns on

Thursday 27th October (Castle and Canal through time), followed by the County Archivist,Jonathan Pepler for the Wright Manley sponsored evening on 24th November (Cheshire

Maps and Map Makers). We meet on the fourth Thursdays in the month at the Tiverton

Village Hall at 7.30 pm, and all are very welcome.

    The Tarporley, Bunbury &

    District Historical Society

    has received a number

    of queries most of which

they have been able toanswer. Recently one from a

    correspondent in Kent has,

    however, rather stumped

    them.

    The attached illustration of

    an unused postcard appears

to be of the Glyndwr Hotel

in the 1940 or 1950s. On

    its back appears the faint

impression of Haines Photographers, Tarporley, in purple in one line. The inscription on thepostcard is of the Duke of Kents visit but the Prince of Wales feathers are clearly seen. The

owner writes that all the record ofces in North Wales and Cardiff claim there was no such

hotel or royal visit, so it might be over the border. In that case, has it anything to do with

Tarporley? Does any reader happen to know anything about it? Any help should be sent

to [email protected] or 01829 832700, or why not come along to our next meeting

in October 27th at Tiverton Village Hall to discuss it, and hear David Hayns presentation of

    Castle and Canal over time?

    CAB outreach programme

The Citizens Advice Bureau is running an outreach programme at Tarporley Community

Centre on the third Wednesday of each month. The next ones take place on Wednesday

19th October and Wednesday 16th November. The CAB is a national charity offering a free,

condential impartial information and advice service. The service can also be contacted by

phone or through local ofces in Winsford, Northwich and Chester. Tel contact 08444 111

Hawthorn trees have red berries and whiteor pink owers in early summer. If youwant to plant a tree have a look at Crataeguslaevigata Pauls Scarlet with deep pink owersor Crataegus laevigata Rosea Flore Plena withdouble pink owers.

Flowers that are in season in October include

the delicate Cyclamen hederifolium whichwill ower into winter and look great plantedunder trees and shrubs that lose their leaves inautumn. They will self seed too bringing you acarpet of white or pink owers in time. They areideal for a dryish spot under trees.

Chrysanthemums are out in late September

and October. Select hardy varieties that can begrown outside in the border or be prepared tobuy new plants each year as many varieties are

only half hardy and will not survive the winter ifleft outside.

Buy bulbs of daffodils and tulips and plantin October. Wallowers and primulas can beplanted out this month for colour next year.October is also the time to plant out perennials, evergreen hedging plants and climbers beforewinter sets in. The soil should still be warmfrom summer to allow good root growth andalso damp from rain enabling them to survivethe winter.

In the vegetable garden you can probably stillplant winter lettuce seeds then cover with acloche to supply some greens in winter. Liftpieces of mint, thyme and chives and pot up foruse indoors when the plants outside die backand sow seeds of parsley to use in cooking.Make sure broccoli and Brussels sprout plantsare staked.

October is the time for the last cut of the yearfor the lawn. You can also lay turf provided thesoil is moist and there are no frosts likely.

    THE DIAMoND jubilee f

    Queen Elizabeth II takes

    place in June next year.

But d yu remember thecelebratins which tk

place back in 1977 fr the

    Queens Silver Jubilee?

    That summer, there were

    street parties all over the

    country as jubilee fever

    swept the nation.

    Here in Tarporley there were

    lots of events, as Ernest

Boynes recalls. Her Majesty the Queen will

    celebrate her sixty years of

    service as Monarch during

    the weekend of June 2nd

to 5th. There will be Diamond Jubilee

celebrations in London and throughout the

    United Kingdom.

Those who lived in Tarporley in 1977, when

Her Majestys Silver Jubilee was celebrated,

will no doubt recall the many wonderful

events which took place and in which the

whole of the village, it seemed, plus many

from outside joined. From 28th May until 4th

    June
