X A Celebration of Excellence

A Celebration of Excellence fulfills one of the goals of theHelena Education Foundation: Public recognition of extraordinary

public school students and outstanding educators.

By honoring achievements of these outstanding individuals, the Board of Directors hopes to:

Demonstrate community appreciation for the efforts of public school students, educators and parents; Acknowledge the critical partnership among schools, home, business and the community; Provide a positive reinforcement for younger students and a goal for which they can strive; Involve the community and business in building awareness and confidence in our public schools.

Students “A Celebration of Excellence” recognizes exceptional students who have demonstrated their efforts inthe classroom, school and in the community day after day, year after year. Distinguished Scholars were selected onthe basis of criteria developed by high school students, teachers and administrators, including grade point average;number of honors, advanced placement and other higher level courses; total credit hours; activities; and communityservice. Distinguished Achievers were chosen by a community committee from nominations by high school teachersbased on excellence in a specific curricular area, leadership, overcoming obstacles to achievement or service.

Educators “A Celebration of Excellence” honors the Distinguished Educators who join students at the gala. Each student identified an educator who has had a significant, positive impact on his or her life and wrote a shortmessage about why that educator was selected. The Helena Education Foundation salutes these fine educators andthanks them for sharing their talents, knowledge, creativity and love of learning with our youth. They make a differ-ence in our schools and community, one student and one class at a time.

Parents “A Celebration of Excellence” recognizes the important partnership between parents, family andschools that is critical to each student’s success. The Board of Directors recognizes and thanks parents, families andfriends for the contribution they make to student scholarship and achievement.

Community “A Celebration of Excellence” also provides an opportunity to acknowledge another important part-nership – the role of the Helena area community in a successful public education system. The Board applaudscommunity members, businesses, service groups and friends of the Helena Education Foundation who sponsoredthese exceptional students and educators as their guests this evening. Please note the many generous event and tablesponsors listed in this program and thank them for their support.

In tribute of Don Pogreba:

A long time back, way back in the days when the grasswas still green and the pond was still wet and the cloudswere still clean I was a trout. The Lorax, Dr. Seuss

I traveled downstream and played with the fish whileliving in dreams. I then found a turtle and he told me ofMyrtle. I learned from the turtle and he taught me manythings. I learned these things and then I was living mydreams and swimming up streams.

Mr. Simms is one of the most laid-back, knowledgeable, intelligent and intense teachers I have ever had. He rarelygets angry, and when he does he hardly ever raises hisvoice and never yells at his students. He teaches hisstudents to question and develop their own opinionsthrough research about topics and stresses the importanceof becoming an educated voter and citizen. Mr. Simmswas the first teacher to ignite my love of history andpassion for politics. Mr. Simms changed my life, andfor that I thank him.

Mr. Partridge changed my life forever when he handedme The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan. You see,Mr. Partridge not only teaches history to students butpushes us to discover how history shapes what kind ofperson we each become. In my case, Mr. Partridgehelped me to unearth the “radical” feminist I truly am.Mr. Partridge has the ability to invoke in his students astrong sense of conscientiousness in learning the pastso we have the knowledge and drive to improve thefuture of our world.

At some point in a person’s life they are influencedby someone. In my high school career, Ms. KelleyMorand, my peer mentoring teacher and Link Crewleader, was that person. While taking her class for twoyears, I have had the privilege of working with andtutoring children. My dream for the future is to becomean elementary teacher. Also since I have taken her class,I have become very active in the community and havehad a more positive outlook on life and the differencesI have made.

I remember my first day in Mr. Bozdog’s Mathcountsclass as a sixth grader, and feeling dizzy at the blindingspeed with which he was throwing problems up on theboard. I was amazed to be in a math class that didn’t lullme into a stupor of boredom. Over the three years I hadMr. Bozdog as my teacher, I consistently felt challenged, and because of that, I learned an enormous amountabout mathematics and problem solving. I canconfidently say Mr. Bozdog was the most influentialperson to my academic pursuits in mathematics.
