2010 will be remembered for The FIFA Soccer

World Cup, the most watched television event

in history, which broadcast South Africa’s colour

and creativity to the furthest corners of the world.

The event attracted more than 300 000 tourists,

90% of whom said their experience of the coun-

try was better than they had expected. 89% said

they would consider visiting South Africa again,

while 96% said they would recommend the

country to their friends and relatives. The world

came, the world saw, and the world fell in love.

The South African film industry excelled in

every area this year: Schucks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to 2010 set a new box office record, while

District 9 was a global blockbuster and was nom-

inated for Oscars with Invictus. Topsy Selinah won Gold at Cannes Lions. Hopeville was named

Best Drama and Miniseries at Rose D’Or.

Swamp of the Baboons was nominated for an

Emmy. Die Antwoord’s Enter the Ninja was

MySpace’s Music Video of the Year. Michael

Meyersfeld won one of just six Golds at the AOP Photographers Awards....

This is no flash in the pan: The Filmmakers Guide to South Africa celebrated its tenth anni-

versary edition this year and we’ve been market-

ing success stories like this from the beginning.

The interest in South Africa has already

resulted in A-list films like Safe House, starring

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, being

rewritten to be set in Cape Town, but this book is

a celebration of the creativity coming from within

South Africa itself.

Whatever your creative need, South Africa

can surpass your expectations. Test us.

A record 23 South African films were released at the local box office in 2010. These films were more varied than ever, with Apartheid era films like Skin and Endgame in the minority for a change.

Instead we had every type of comedy: black comedy (Jozi), romantic comedies (I Now Pronounce You Black and White), Bollywood romantic comedies (For Better For Worse), standup comedy documen-taries (Outrageous), Afrikaans teen com-edies (Bakgat 2), and candid camera (Schucks Tshabalala’s Survival Guide to 2010).

We also had a run of Afrikaans mu-sicals or musical-themed films (Liefling, Susanna van Biljon, and Jakhalsdans) and genre films like Eternity, a vampire thriller set in Joburg; The Unforgiving, South Af-rica’s first splatter film; and The Race-ist, a Fast and Furious-type racing movie. There have also been a number of TV spinoffs (Egoli: The Movie; Hopeville; and Stoute Boudjies). Add in wildlife family films (White Lion), art-house drama (Shirley

Adams and Long Street), soccer films (Themba), and coming of age book adap-tations (Spud, Die Ongelooflike Avonture van Hanna Hoekom), and you have the beginnings of a varied, sustainable local film industry.

Box office returns have been prom-ising: Shucks set a new box office record for a South African film, raking in R37.5 million, while Spud topped R16 million, Liefling made more than R13 million, Bakgat 2 topped R5 million and Jakhals-dans earned over R3 million.

The recession has been good for the local box office: James Cameron’s Avatar made over R41.9 million locally, a new record, even before its re-release.

South African films are making small inroads overseas too: Jerusalema and White Wedding were both released inter-nationally in 2010.

After District 9 and Invictus started the year with six Oscar nominations between them, South Africa’s awards cabinet continued to grow. Oliver Schmitz’

Life, Above All won the Prix Fran-cois Chalais after screening in Un Certain Regard at Cannes Film Festi-val and also took home Best South Afri-can Film and Best Actress (Khomotso Manyaka) at The Durban international Film Festival. This story of a touching mother-daughter relationship in rural South Africa was also shortlisted for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. Stefanie Sycholt’s Themba: A Boy Called Hope received The Cinema for Peace Honorary Award, among others, and Neal Sundstrom’s Finding Lenny won Best Feature at The Pan African Film Festival in Cannes, France.

SHORT FILMS

Short films have always been a platform for filmmakers to experiment, so it’s no surprise that the format suggested a number of new directions for South African cinema this year.

Focus Features’ Africa First short film programme has been driving this innova-tion. As part of their ongoing commitment to nurturing emergent filmmakers from Africa, for the last two years the specialty films unit of Universal Pict- ures has given five African directors a year $10 000 a piece, as well as development help to make short films.

Two South Africans were among the winners in the first year.

Catapult’s commercials director Jan-Hendrik Beetge directed Abyss Boys, a beautifully shot film about two brothers caught up in the dangerous world of illegal

abalone poaching. Abyss Boys went on to win Best Short Film at The African Movie Academy Awards 2010.

Jenna Bass wrote and directed The Tunnel, a magical realism tale set during the Gukurahundi massacres in 1980s Zim-babwe, where a young girl, Elizabeth, uses her skills as a storyteller to save her vil-lage and solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance. The Tunnel was an official selection for Sundance 2010 and screened in competition at Berlin, while Jenna went on to win The Hubert Bals Fund Award for “the most promising African project presented at Durban FilmMart” for her urban fantasy, Tok Tokkie.

Kenya’s Wanuri Kahui also shot her short, the dystopian tale Pumzi, in South Africa, working with Inspired Minority Pic-tures. Pumzi won Best International Short

Film at Cannes Independent Film Festi-val 201o for its story of Asha’s search for life in a futuristic Africa, where nature is seemingly extinct outside of self-sufficient indoor communities.

In 2011, we expect to see the latest fruits from Africa First, including Stephen Abbott’s dark comedy, Dirty Laundry, and Matthew Jankes’ science fiction story, Umkhungo.

With the success of District 9, it’s in-evitable we’ll see more African science fiction. One great sample is Sweetheart, directed by Michael Matthews of Be Phat Motel, about a young housewife whose husband and sons don’t return from an everyday trip into town. To find answers, she sets off into an apocalyptic Cape Town that feels familiar but is a marked alternative to the world we know.

A YEAR OF

FIRSTS

COMMERCIALS

The most talked about commercial in South Africa this year was Topsy Selinah, directed by Egg Films’ Kim Geldenhuys for Ogilvy.

Selinah won South Africa’s first Grand London International Advertising Award (LIAA) and her first Gold at Cannes Lions in over a decade for its moving portrayal of The Lazarus Effect, where people suf-fering from HIV/Aids can be practically brought back to life with the proper use of anti-retrovirals.

The spot also won the Best Profes- sional VUKA! Award and a Gold Loerie Award, among other accolades.

As a public service announcement, Selinah wasn’t eligible for The Loerie Awards’ Grand Prix, which went to Allan Gray Legend, which imagines what might have happened if James Dean’s life hadn’t been so tragically cut short.

Shot beautifully in black and white by Velocity director Keith Rose, the King James ad also won Bronze at Cannes Lions.

Bouffant director Dean Blumberg won South Africa’s other Bronze for 1st For Women Insurance So Backwards, which illustrated why women receive better insurance prices.

In all, productions filmed in South Af-rica were shortlisted for 33 Cannes Lions in 2010, while a number of South African ads were shortlisted at The Clios: Velocity director Greg Gray’s Tetrapak Lightning and Guinness Scout; Kim’s Audi Flipbook; and Egg’s Humanoid director Terence Neale’s Texa Sneeze.

At LIAA, Velocity’s Anton Visser won Bronze for Wimpy Family, thanks to Sean Ou Tim’s music through Meme (Bluetone).

South Africa’s first 3D adverts were also flighted in 2010: Luma’s DSTV advert and Shy the Sun’s M-Net campaign for Ogilvy.

Local work pops up regularly in inter-national taste-making websites and publi-cations like Shots, which featured Selinah, Legend, So Backwards, Wicked Pixels’ Craig Wessels (Momentum Biology of Change), Egg’s Slim (Garmin War) and Kevin Fitzger-ald (Tracker Memories), and Velocity’s Anton Visser (Stimorol Infinity) and Daniel Levi (IBM Henry).

TRIUMPH AT ROSE D’OR

South Africa’s television industry came of age in 2010 when Hopeville won The Rose D’Or award for best drama and mini series. Hopeville, which was produced by Curious Pictures for Heartlines and SABC Education, beat 85 television dramas from around the world to claim the prize.

Written and directed by John Trengove, Hopeville tells the story of an alcoholic father (Themba Ndaba) who tries to win the love of his son (Nat Junior Singo) by fixing the local swimming pool. The series explores the impact of doing good on the lives of the whole community.

At The International Emmys, South Afr ican Lerato Mvelase (formerly Moloisane) was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress for her role in the SABC1 drama series Home Affairs, produced by Penguin Films.

In Home Affairs, Lerato plays Katlego, a passionate drama student struggling with her identity as a black woman in South Africa. The series was nominated for Best Drama Series at The International Emmys in 2006 and 2008.

South Africans also featured at the Primetime Emmys, where DOPs Lee Doig and Mike Yelseth helped Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains win Outstanding Cinematography.

Lee and Mike have both had three previous unsuccessful Outstanding Cinematography nominations in the Emmys: Mike with two episodes of Survivor and The History Channel’s Explorers – In the Footsteps of Livingstone and Stanley; and Lee with another Survivor series; Explorers, coupled with Mike; and with his lone exploits in the

ABC Profiles from the Front Line series about U.S. military forces deployed in Afghanistan.

Locally, at The South African Film and Television Awards, winners included Death of a Queen (Best Mini-Drama Series), Family Bonds (Best Comedy), Big Up (Best Youth and Children), Carte Blanche (Best News and Actuality), Strictly Come Dancing (Best Variety Show), Dis Hoe Dit Is Met Steve (Best Talk Show), Our House (Best Reality Show), Noot vir Noot (Best Game Show), 50/50 (Best Magazine Programme), Jam Sandwich (Best Music Show) and Paw Paw Films’ Sokhulu and Partners (Best Drama), which earned an International Emmy nomination in 2009. A Place Called Home and Isidingo were the two most awarded programmes with five wins each.

WILDLIFE

Adrian Bailey and Robyn Keene-Young’s Swamp of the Baboons (aka Swamp Troop) was nominated in the Outstanding Nature Programming category at the 31st Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards.

The one-hour TV documentary, about a troop of baboons in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, also received awards from both The Missoula International and Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festivals.

The show is a co-production between the filmmakers’ company, Road Media, and National Geographic.

South Africa also had five nominations at The Wildscreen Film Festival’s Panda Awards. Deadly 60: South Africa, a BBC and CBBC co-production, was up for the UWE Children’s Choice Award; WildEarth’s Live Safari was up for the ARKive New Media Award; and Homebrew Films’ Shoreline was up for the Presenter-led Award, while Into the Dragon’s Lair was up for Films at 59 Sound Award and Animal Planet Inter-national People & Animals Award.

Directed by Craig and Damon Foster, Into the Dragon’s Lair tells the story of two underwater cinematographers who go look-ing for crocodiles underneath Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The documentary thriller also won Excellence in Underwater Cinema-tography at the BLUE Ocean Film Festival.

At the Veolia Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards, Bridgena Barnard won Behaviour: Mammals, while Ben Cranke was the runner-up in the Animals in Their Environments Category. Neil Aldridge, Adrian Bailey, and Morkel Erasmus were all highly commended.

South Africa admittedly has an un-fair advantage in terms of wildlife: at The World Travel Awards, Shamwari was named World’s Leading Safari and Game Reserve in a category where all the finalists were from Africa and seven of the nine from SA.

DOCUMENTARY

Saving Soweto, directed by Shareen An-derson of Fort Greene Filmworks and Lisa Henry of Left Hand Films, received a Bronze at The New York Festival’s Interna-tional Television and Film Awards.

Produced for Al Jazeera English (DSTV channel 406), the documentary series is an eight-part look at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the largest in the world.

At The International Television and Film

Awards, Saving Soweto trumped thousands of entries from over 30 countries.

David Forbes’ The Cradock Four was another winner this year, being named Best South African Documentary at The Durban International Film Festival.

The feature-length movie tells the sto-ry of The Cradock Four: Matthew Goniwe, Fort Calata, Sparrow Mkonto, and Sicelo Mhlauli, activists who were kidnapped and then killed in 1985.

At The Encounters International Doc-umentary Festival, Clifford Bestall’s The

16th Man was awarded The 2010 Audi-ence Award for Best South African Film. The film is based on John Carlin’s book, Playing the Enemy, which also inspired Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, and tells the story of how the 1995 Rugby World Cup was used to unite a divided South Africa.

Sara Blecher’s Surfing Soweto won Best Local Film at Tri Continental Human Rights Film Festival. It’s the thrilling com-ing of age story of a group of Soweto teen-agers who risk their lives daily by surfing on top of moving trains.

2010 was the year that South African music went global. This was partly thanks to the global exposure from The FIFA World Cup, which also saw Shakira record Waka Waka, one of the biggest hits of the year, with Freshlyground.

But this world-wide breakout was also thanks to some awe-inspiring music videos for Die Antwoord. Zef Side, Sean Metelerkamp’s introductory short film for the white trash rappers, became an Internet meme, being seen by nearly six million people on YouTube alone. The video went on to win the YouTube Play global video art

competition, even being displayed at The Guggenheim and making Pitchfork’s list of the top music videos of 2010.

This was followed by Enter the Ninja, co-directed by Ninja and Rob Malpage, which has had nearly nine millions views on YouTube alone and was MySpace’s Music Video of the Year. As the MySpace judges admitted, “Nobody else used the music video as effectively in 2010 as Die Antwoord.”

Evil Boy, the third video, was the weirdest and most talked about yet, exploring Xhosa initiation and male

circumcision, complete with giant penis sculptures, nipple-less breasts, and albino rat hair accessories. Unsurprisingly, YouTube banned it, generating even more publicity for directors Ninja and Rob Malpage.

Duvan Durand’s Cooler as Ekke music video for Jack Parow and Craig Wessels’ Automatic for Tokio Hotel both cracked the 1.5 million mark on YouTube, while Francis Gavin and Jolyon Ellis won both the MK Award and the SAMA Award for Best Music Video 2010 for The Parlotones Push Me to the Floor.

THE YEAR OF 3D

2010 was the year of 3D globally and South Africa was no exception.

Luma produced South Africa’s first 3D advert, DSTV Balloons, which was followed by two Shy the Sun adverts for M-Net, Firefly and Ladybug.

All three of these ads were for Ogil-vy, with other ad agencies now starting to join the party.

2011 sees South African animation make its long form debut on the big screen in stereoscopic 3D.

First up is Lion of Judah, Derryck Broom’s retelling of the Easter story from the perspective of the animals.

Jock of the Bushveld, directed by Duncan MacNeillie, is based on Percy Fitzpatrick’s much-loved 1907 novel about a plucky dog.

Zambezia, directed by Wayne Thorn-ley, is the story of a young falcon in the amazing bird city of Zambezia.

Khumba, Triggerfish’s follow-up to Zambezia, will also be produced in stereoscopic 3D for a 2012 release.

The country’s animation achieve-ments are not restricted to 3D.

Cape Town-based animation com-pany Clockwork Zoo scored a large coup for South Africa in 2010 by com-

pleting work on the animated series Florrie’s Dragons for Disney.

The company also finished work on Caillou for Canada’s Cookie Jar En-tertainment. Caillou is currently being aired on SABC2.

Sunrise Productions has won over 10 international awards for its Jungle Beat children’s series, which has been broadcast in more than 100 countries. Sunrise is pioneering animation mer-chandising in South Africa after intro-ducing a new character, Bokkie, who’s also the Springbok Rugby team mascot.

Another success story is Papercut

Studios, one of the largest 2D anima-tion studios in Johannesburg, who have just completed 13 episodes of French television series, Green Squad, pro-duced by Gaumont – Alphanim.

The South African animation indus-try is developing so quickly we’re bring-ing in global experts to help us keep up.

Recent visitors include Aardman Animations co-founder Dave Sproxton; former Pixar technical director Jessica Abroms; Howl’s Moving Castle casting director Ned Lott; and Kevin Geiger, who helped design Disney’s produc-tion pipeline.
