Services Sector Educational Training Authority (Services SETA) is proud to be associated with this, The Filmmakers Guide to South Africa: Creative Show-case, which presents a showcase to the local communications and entertain-ment markets who are our members, as well as to the international market.

Along with 37 other industries, Ser-vices SETA is responsible for the creative industries which support the marketing and communication cluster. The film in-dustry is critically important within our sector in this regard.

Of importance is the idea that this publication is intended to showcase South African creative content and not simply the service work generally asso-ciated with an outsourced sector.

We are as interested in those con-cepts which combine origination, scripting, production, postproduction, marketing and distribution as a holis-tic product as we are in the specialised skills required for outsourcing for pro-ductions which originate and are pro-duced beyond our borders.

This is not to say that we are not

comfortable supporting the notion of South Africa as a strong outsourced, specialised skills provider. However sus-tainability is about a composite industry and not just a specialised one.

Our government has identified South Africa as a creative hub and statu-tory bodies such as Services SETA are proudly associating ourselves with that strategic notion, hence our unbridled support for this type of showcase.

However, we encourage and chal-lenge our local online and television broadcasters to understand that until such time as dedicated channels are provided for, with dedicated research and production budgets so that we have film and animation channels which are Proudly South African, we will never have a sufficient showcase for local talent.

Meanwhile we proudly continue to associate ourselves with The Filmmak-ers Guide as being the “it” which we re-gard as South Africa’s talent showcase.

Africa’s creative capital

While Cape Town is prepar-ing to host Design Indaba, the world’s top design confer-ence, and bid to become the World Design Capital, Johan-nesburg is celebrating being ranked the 10th most creative city in the 2009 Cannes Re-port, which also named South Africa the 13th most awarded country in the world.

In the same report, Ogil-vy Johannesburg were the

eighth highest ranked agency globally, followed by TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris, Johannesburg in 14th place and Net#work BBDO Johannesburg at num-ber 18. TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris was also named top agency from the EMEA region.

South Africa’s creativity is perhaps best evidenced by its peaceful transition to democ-racy, where leaders like Nobel Prize winners Nelson Mande-

la and Desmond Tutu have led the country through a dynam-ic process of re-imagining ev-ery area of life over the last 15 years since Apartheid.

For most of the world, Af-rica, the cradle of humankind, remains a mystery: full of un-known stories and exotic im-agery, but romanticised and demonised in equal parts.

With June 2010 bringing the FIFA Soccer World Cup to

Africa for the first time, more lights will be shining in than ever before on what can no longer be labeled “the dark continent.”

Once an English outpost and still often more influ-enced by America than Af-rica, the Rainbow Nation is perfectly positioned to act as a translator between this re-markable continent and the rest of the world.

With its mix of first and third world, African and Euro-pean, South African creatives make the familiar foreign and the foreign familiar. If another new wave of creativity is com-ing, smart money says it will be from here.

All the signs are there: 2009 saw South Africa win two Grand Prixs at Cannes Li-ons; the Soweto Gospel Choir win their third Grammy in

three years; and productions filmed in the country nomi-nated for 19 Primetime Em-mies, eleven Gemini Awards, five Golden Globes, and an International Emmy.

Similarly, 2010 started with six Oscar nominations.

The potential was epito-mised by Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, one of the most praised films of 2009, which grossed more than $115 mil-

lion off a modest $30 million budget. With typical South African ingenuity, District 9 in-troducing the globe to a new genre: third world science fic-tion mockumentaries.

Creative Showcase is an invitation to partner with South Africa’s groundbreak-ing creatives rather than to just see this symbolic country as one of the world’s leading service destinations.

Long formlegends in the making

South Africans are excelling at every level of the global film industry, from scriptwriters to directors to cinematographers.

Anthony Peckham wrote two of the year’s most impor-tant films, Clint Eastwood’s Golden Globe triple-nominee Invictus, with Morgan Free-man and Matt Damon, and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, one of the fifteen most popular films of 2009, starring Robert Downey Junior and Jude Law,

Other South African screen-writers in Hollywood include Oscar-winner Ronald Harwood (The Pianist), Ann Peacock (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) and Shawn Slovo (Captain Corelli’s Mandollin).

They’re backed by a strong literary tradition that includes bestselling authors like Wilbur Smith and Bryce Courtenay

and award-winners like J.M. Coetzee and Nadine Gordimer, not to mention a new genera-tion of crime writers like Roger Smith, whose debut novel, Mixed Blood, has already been optioned with Samuel L. Jack-son attached.

Similarly, District 9’s Neill Blomkamp is hardly the only South African feature direc-tor to watch. Gavin Hood (Tsotsi, Rendition) directed 2009’s twelfth largest film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while other South African helmers of note include Wayne Kramer (Crossing Over); Roger Michell (Morning Glory); Sunu Gonera (Pride); Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles); Steven Silver (Bang Bang Club); Darrell Roodt (Yesterday); Ralph Ziman (Jerusalema); Mark Dornford-May (uCarmen eKhayelitsha)

and emerging talent like Jann Turner (White Wedding).

Thabang Moleya directed Sokhulu & Partners, which was nominated for Best Drama Se-ries at last year’s International Emmies, while Jon Blair and Francois Verster are just two of the country’s multi-award-win-ning documentary directors.

Behind the camera, South African Dion Beebe won an Os-car for Best Cinematography on Memoirs of a Geisha in 2006; and Telfer Barnes pulled focus to help Anthony Dod Mantle win last year’s Oscar for Slum-dog Millionaire. Double Oscar nominee Stephen Goldblatt shot last year’s acclaimed Julie and Julia, while Giulio Biccari lensed Spooks and No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

Expect more South African talent to break out in 2010.

“We see the arts as a key economic activity, in addition to providing entertainment and

promoting cultural diversity and national identity.”

South Africa’s short form specialists

South Africa won two Grand Prixs at Cannes Lions in 2009. In the Radio Lions category, Net#work BBDO Johannesburg won a Grand Prix for their Virgin Atlantic Airline campaign, while TBWA/Hunt Lascaris bagged another Grand Prix in the Out-door Lions category for their billboard made out of Zimba-bwean dollars for The Zimba-bwean Newspaper.

South Africa’s been adding at least a Grand Prix a year to its awards cabinet recently. In 2008, DDB South Africa col-lected a Print Grand Prix for En-ergizer’s Never let their toys die campaign; in 2007, Net#work BBDO won the Outdoor Grand Prix for a solar-powered Ned-bank billboard offering power to the people, which generated

electricity for a nearby school; and in 2006, FCB Johannesburg took home a Print Grand Prix for their Lego Imagine ad, which showed a tiny Lego periscope emerging from a Lego sea. That makes five Grand Prixs in the last four years.

The country will be hoping that 2010 becomes the year of the country’s second film Grand Prix. In 2001, South African ser-vice company Cape Direct were co-credited with Partizan for Traktor’s Fox Sports campaign, but the Grand Prix has so far eluded local directors: with sev-en Golds, Velocity’s Keith Rose has come the closest.

2009 saw the ad industry scoop a number of other acco-lades. For example, at the Clios, Shy the Sun won a Silver for

their first ever commercial, Sea Orchestra, an animated spot for United. Animation is a key area to watch in South Africa. At the London International Advertis-ing Awards, BlackGinger won a Silver Animation Award for their work on Precious Biscuits for Ogilvy, a Bakers Biscuit spot co-directed by Shy the Sun and Cab Films’ Bruce Paynter. This was the highest award given in the category.

2009 ended well, with three spots from Bryan Little in Boards in December. Similarly, January 2010 started with new work by Amy Allais, Anton Visser, Bruno Bossi, Bryan Little, Craig Wes-sels, Jason Fialkov, Jonathan Cohen, Keith Rose, Kim Gelden-huys, Nicholas Hester, Slim and Terence Neale in Shots.

The best crew in the world?

It’s in the less high profile posi-tions that South Africa’s non-unionised, English-speaking crew are really extraordinary, building world-beating CVs without hav-ing to leave South Africa.

In 2009, five local crew were nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards. Set decorator Emelia Weavind was co-nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Art Direction for a Miniseries for her work transforming Southern Af-rica into Iraq on Generation Kill.

Christa Schamberger (10 000 BC) was also co-nominated for Outstanding Casting on the ac-claimed miniseries for her work finding authentic Iraqis on the tip of Africa.

Colin McFarlane, who also earned a Gemini nomination for his work on Diamonds, was

nominated for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Miniseries or Movie for his work on 24: Redemption, despite having to overcome freak weather condi-tions that included gale force winds and bucketing rain.

Similarly, Waterfront Post’s Barry Donnelly was awarded a Golden Reel by The Motion Pic-ture Sound Editors for ADR mix-ing on Generation Kill: Get Some.

Costume designer Jo Kat-saras (Racing Stripes) and cos-tume supervisor Zureta Schulz (Man to Man) were nominated for Outstanding Costumes for a Series for their work on No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency.

In July 2009, Katsaras ex-hibited the costumes at The Fashion Institute of Design and Marketing in Los Angeles, USA,

after an invitation from Mary Rose, president of The Costume Designer’s Guild.

For commercials, Rob Mal-page won a Silver for Cinema-tography at the London Inter-national Advertising Awards for his work on BMW - Free Diver with Didier Noirot, while CFX was nominated for a Brit-ish Television Advertising Craft Award for the models they made for Grow, Johnny Green’s Royal Mail commercial.

As Invictus producer Lori McCreary says, “The crew here are amazing. They have incred-ible skills and abilities in their own department and a unique understanding of most other de-partments, as most have been trained in multiple areas, which is rare to find in the US.”

Developing the South African film industry

A.I.D.I.On 10 June 2009, members from Services SETA met with the Cape Film Commission and Animation SA to commemorate an important initiative driven by the three industry powerhouses.

Described as one of the Western Cape film industry’s most ambitious projects to date, the first phase of the Animation Industry Development Initiative (AIDI) kicked off at the False Bay College in Khayelitsha on 26 June 2009.

Since the launch of the program, 30 learners have been successful in their training. Judy Robison of ConvergSA explains, “We have already trained 50 new interns in drawing for animation and 50 in digital design. These 50 have undergone business skills training. From the 50 students chosen, 30 have gone through the program. We have effectively created 30 new entry level job opportunities in a period of six to eight weeks.”

Recruitment is underway for the second year of the course and False Bay College has become the official base of the project.

Five of the learners have been placed at Clockwork Zoo, SA’s biggest 2D animation company. The interns are already hard at work on season five of Caillou, co-produced with Canada’s Cookie Jar Entertainment.

“The Services SETA has pledged its support to help facilitate substantial job creation within the

animation industry by 2020.”

Developing the South African film industry

PRISCILLA DAVIDPriscilla David is now the chamber manager for Film, Animation and the Creative Industries, as well as Events and Conference Management.

Her teaching diploma and BA degree aside, Priscilla has been involved in education for over twelve years and has been actively involved in the Animation Industry Development Initiative.

She says, “We’ve already come a long way in the film industry.” She’s awarded 100 bursaries for a one year animation qualification in partnership with the Cape Film Commission and False Bay College, but she has loftier hopes for the project. She is liaising with the Gauteng Film Commission and the Durban Film Office to take the project to a national level.

Priscilla is also in discussion with Toonboom for a school feeder program to see learners from grade 10-12 develop their animation and scriptwriting skills.

She aims to consolidate existing relationships with Skillset. One result of these talks is German master classes taking place in November. She says, “This is to help the industry grow to a level of global competency and will involve experts from Europe conducting master classes as well as skills transfer.”

Mark has directed and photographed more than 100 television commercials, music promo clips and live music concerts for television broadcast and DVD sales. He has worked in Canada as a member of IATSI # 669 and is a member of the South African Society of Cinematographers.

director: Mark says, “My attention to constructing the visual pace of any film project is what defines my style as a director. With performance-based films, my desire is to develop a ‘back story’ and offer ‘aspiration’ to screen characters, which I believe makes for a more plausible and entertaining film that both the actors and audiences will revere.”

cinematographer: Mark explains, “My approach to exposure is to use and subdue Africa’s vivid sunlight and magnificent sky, maximising the vibrant earth colours to cinematic effect. I enjoy creating contrast in my lighting and allow the shadows to be deep and meaningful, with textured and true skin tones, which gives an overall depth to my screen images.”

awards:Mark has received the SASC Visible Spectrum award in gold, silver and bronze for cinematography, a SAMA award and a Silver Stone award for directing.

UNCONVENTIONAL It may be called a convention centre, but there’s nothing conventional about it.

Ask any one of our clients who have filmed here and they will say that the Cape Town International Convention Centre is indeed designed to cater to your every need.

From conferences hosting thousands of delegates and consumer exhibitions or trade shows, to executive business meetings and intimate social functions, the CTICC has played host to them all, memorably.

So, the next time you need a unique space in which to make a lasting impression, why settle for the conventional?

directors

• Oscar Strauss: Oscar’s strength lies in classic storytelling with a strong art director’s eye. He is also superb with children.

• Gersh Kgamedi: A lifestyle director who beautifully captures the texture and nuances of Africa.

• Mukunda: A visual director with a cosmetic feel to his work, who also loves playing with visual effects.

• Ian Difford: Passionate about food and liquids, Ian brings beautiful lighting and an aesthetic sensibility to tabletop work.

• Alan Irvin: Alan’s work is about the look. He is a visual director who loves creating beautiful pictures with real performances.

Picture Tree is a boutique style production company with five directors who believe in always finding the big idea in a script, an unflappable production team, a well-oiled accounts department, a savvy research department and an executive producer who understands that local can become global. We are quoted in Shots and Boards magazines, we regularly hang up new awards, and yet we are still essentially a small, tight-knit team who put together hassle-free, ego-free shoots that, quite simply, work. For the client. For the agency. For the product.

Founded by Kathy English-Brower in 2001, The Filmmakers Guide to South Africa has expanded into three separate yet aligned volumes. The Industry is a film book

with a tourism edge, providing an overview of the various industry sectors and South Africa as a whole; Service and Co-Production showcases what South Africa

offers international clients as a destination, highlighting our facilitation companies and co-production possibilities; while Creative Showcase is focused on South

Africa’s visual talent, from directors and cinematographers to photographers and visual effects artists, among others.
