When I was a child I was a perfectionist. I was always trying to please everyone. This
was my world. I never knew who I was or what I wanted because the wishes of others
always came first. I was very lonely due to this, and never felt part of a group. My
dream was to be accepted and not to be thought of as an “outsider”. The angst contin-
ued through my adult life although I learned to mask it to others. I had always loved art
from a distance, never dreaming that one day community, creativity and freedom of
expression through art could be mine.
After I retired, I was at a loss about what to do with my life. I had always worked many
long hours in professions of service to others, and that helped me cope. Now, I had too
much time on my hands. A therapist at Strong who knew about Creative Wellness Op-
portunities suggested I try it. She knew that I loved art and needed community to cre-
ate a balance for myself. It was a very difficult step for me to take…to acknowledge
what I needed.
My first workshop at CWO was “Card Making”. The facilitator was warm and very open
and I felt welcome. I tried other types of art and workshops. The CWO was such a positive non-judgmental environment
that my love for art and people came pouring out. What a wonderful experience! I was less afraid to take risks and no
question I had was left unanswered. This was such a safe comfortable environment. It
was just perfect for a shy and fearful person to feel free to be creative. I fell in love
with drawing and sketching female portraits and soon I was painting them. I even felt
safe enough to develop my own personal style! I am experiencing what it is like to
find my own ‘visual voice” and a sense of spiritual wholeness.
The belonging to community, the support and encouragement at CWO has helped me
in all aspects of my life. I feel a sense of gratitude and purpose. Every day I come to
CWO with joy and excitement to create and, with pleasure, be with the wonderful
people here. My peers share so much and give so much encouragement to each oth-
er. It is a very special healing haven of peace, creativity, and joy! CWO is a wonderful
gift and I am so grateful to be part of it! —Bron

TRANSFORMATION DYPTICK
It was a brisk morning last month when Kit, Belinda,
and I boarded the train to Albany for the Regional
Advocacy Committee meeting. This opportunity al-
lowed myself and other peers within the region to re-
port out and collaborate on important matters that di-
rectly impact people who share in our mental health
recovery journey. I discovered that we all have a plat-
form to advocate for ourselves and others. I was for-
tunate to co –facilitate a breakout session where we
really dove into the changes we would like to see de-
veloped in regards to benefits within the mental
health community such as access to quality housing.
Through the meeting we gained useful tools and re-
sources that will allow us to continue to develop,
shape and grow advocacy surrounding topics such as
housing, employment options, and peer run respite
models. I embraced John Allen’s statement “Each
one, teach one!” everyone has a voice and it deserves
to be heard. –Jill
I went to my first RAC meeting on January 29, 2018
in Albany New York. I learned the RAC meetings
are a public meeting for recipients and their families
to provide actionable advice within the divisions of
the Office of Mental Health. I like that these are
The RAC meeting was a good mix of peers and
mental health professionals. Each topic was intro-
duced and then met with great questions and dis-
cussion. The main topics were housing and bene-
fits. There was a very interesting presentation on
the “virtual community” development for support
online by Rita Cronise. I was able to talk to her
about the benefits of inclusion of the arts in the
mental health community. -Belinda

grassroots organizations within our community
that are offering opportunities to act and make a
difference. I wish that they were more publicized.
I had no idea that an organization like this existed
for us. –Kit

“.... mental health is not the opposite of mental illness. “
“For me, mental health is simply one’s ability to feel connected in the family (whatever that is for you) and in the world while continuously learning and growing. It is a creative process rather than a coping process. It is also not an individual phenom-enon.”
