Pilots Battle Bad Weather for Balloon GlowBalloonists battled against howling winds and downpours of rain on Saturday evening at the Balloon Glow Spectacular, trying their hard-est to give the soggy crowd what they came for. Crews were fighting hard against the ele-ments to keep the balloons under control. A short intermission in the weather, where the wind disappeared and the rain briefly sub-sided, gave balloon crews the opportunity they needed to set up in fair conditions, but as the balloons began to inflate, the gather-ing storm clouds gave out. Buckets of rain showered down, drenching spectators, the balloons and their respective crews. A big gust of wind came, and the first bal-loon came down. Within minutes all ten were deflating, as much for the safety of the bal-loons as for the crew members and specta-tors in attendance. “Those pilots should get medals,” said event organiser and local hot air ballooning enthusi-ast Jan Kerr. “The weather was absolutely hor-

rible, and what they did was fantastic. I can’t praise them enough for doing their best to get the balloons up.” While the glow itself was short lived, the sheer determination of the balloon crews to take on the weather and light the balloons up for the crowd is a demonstration of how much this event, and the town of Canowin-dra means to them. “I have so much praise for the pilots. They gave something really special to the public,” said Jan Kerr. Scheduled entertainment was cancelled, including the much anticipated fire dancing act, as the stage was too wet and slippery for the dancers, much to the disappointment of both spectators and organisers. Locals and visitors to the town had been looking forward to the popular, annual fam-ily event, and thousands of people still came through the gates despite the unfavourable weather.

LettersHello Editor, I am wondering if anyone ever stops to think of the few people who got the balloons going in Canowindra. The late Michael Sutton and several others were the pioneers who started what is now a successful time for Canowindra.Michael got the gas supplies going for Canowindra and serviced the balloonists of the time. My husband and I (as a present) and oth-er family members had a flight in October 1996, and if was truly wonderful. We have always appreciated what Michael did for the balloonists and their customers and Canow-indra at the time.

The Vintage Drivers’ Club came through town earlier this week with around 40 cars from 1915-1930, mostly Model A Fords. The group of vintage motoring enthusiasts are travelling 1000km on an ‘Endurance Rally’ through NSW before finishing back in Victo-ria where they started. A representative of the group said that rallies like these were ‘a test of our strength as well as the car’s strength’. The group will head to Bathurst next, then Tumut and Albury. The Canowindra Phoenix Photography Competition has officially closed. Many ex-cellent photos were entered, and it was dif-ficult to pick the winners. Anna Wensing won the Under 16’s competition, and Colin Pryor took out the Over 16’s. The winners will be presented with their winning photo profes-sionally framed, and have the chance to do a family sitting with Sarah Windus of CTM Photography. Thank you to everyone who got on board.Moyne Aged Care Plus will once again be holding their fundraising fete on Saturday 2nd May at 10.30am. Everyone is invited to attend. We Will Remember ThemThis weekend, Anzac Day reaches a milestone anniversary. 100 years have passed since the Gallipoli landings of the First World War, and a century on, the significance of the date has not been lost on Austral-ians. As a tribute to Australian soldiers, past and present, a commemora-tive coloured $2 coin has been released, marking this important mo-ment in Australian history. The coin captures the history and service of Australians at war, and features poppies, a symbol of remembrance. It is only the fourth coloured coin ever to enter circulation in Australia. “There will be approximately 1.5 million coins released into circula-tion over the coming weeks which will provide an opportunity for the public to be able to secure a keepsake for this special occasion,” John Cobb said. The plight of the Anzac is deeply ingrained in us; the battle at Gal-lipoli lasted for a grueling nine months, and took the lives of 8700 soldiers. 100 years on, the first Anzacs are revered as cultural icons, and national heroes. The legend of the Anzac soldier has been solemnly handed down through generations by families and friends who re-tell the stories, cel-ebrate the survivors and honour those who lost their lives on behalf of our freedom. Like a fingerprint, their legacy is unique to our cultural identity, and every year, many Australians make the humbling pilgrimage to Gallipoli to show their respects at Anzac Cove. For the 100th anniversary, over 42,000 Australians applied for one of 8200 passes to the Dawn Service held in Gallipoli. The poignant commemorations will also be attended by 10 widows of WWI Anzac veterans, school groups and soldiers’ descendants, among others. In Australia, people of all ages across the nation will take the time to pay their respects to the fallen and returned soldiers of war; world-wide Australians stop to unite in a morning of reflection and respect.It was veterans and families of casualties who campaigned for a day of remembrance. Federal MP Angus Taylor said “it is the community which has continued to demand a place and time to remember, to find a way to tell the stories of ordinary men and women who did extraor-dinary things.” The 100th anniversary is a deeply important commemorative event that will be recognized and celebrated across the country and the world. Here in Canowindra, a 6am Dawn Service will be held in Memo-rial Park, followed by an open breakfast at Canowindra Services Club and a march along Gaskill Street. John Cobb said Anzac Day is “the day when Australians gather to remember that freedom has a cost and freedom of expression is not something to be taken for granted”; a reminder that the idea of free-dom that Anzacs fought and died for deserves to be respected and cherished. “Let us use this time in our history to better understand our strength as a young nation, and in the spirit of the Anzacs, our potential to stand together as a community,” said Angus Taylor.

Gallipoli Brides

Who are they?The 10 women going to Gallipoli on a special free Qantas flight this week are the widows of veterans from the First World War. 115 WWI widows accepted the invitation to Is-tanbul for the centenary, but only 10 were fit enough to make the journey. They are all aged between 71 and 91, and many are wives of the veterans’ second marriages.

Where do they come from?These ladies are from all over Australia. Four are from New South Wales, four are from Queensland, one from Victoria and one from Western Australia. Gaskill Street TributeA sea of red poppies fills a shopfront window on Gaskill Street, a special Anzac Day tribute to honour war veterans and their families. Among the poppies sit precious photos, gen-uine medals, wartime propaganda and histor-ical anecdotes; stories of local soldiers which serve as sobering reminders of the sacrifices made by the young men who fought in the First World War. The touching and meaningful idea came about as a result of collaboration between Ross Cleary from the Canowindra Historical

Society, and Deli Lama’s Tommy Jeffs, who wanted to brighten the street and pay tribute to the town’s wartime history for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing. Local ladies and residents at Moyne Aged Care helped make the tribute possible by crafting hundreds of handmade poppies from crepe paper, a symbol of remembrance for those who lost their lives. The memorial will be on display over the Anzac commemorative period.

The debate is on now for whether Cabonne Council should merge with Orange City Council or stay as a stand alone Council. Both Councils are undertaking an investiga-tion into the business case for a merger. The Councils want the best for their communities and the work being undertaken in the inves-tigation will provide some guidance on what is the best path. The business case study is being conducted by an independent firm, Morrison Low and the preliminary findings should be available at the two local meetings the Council is holding both in Molong and Canowindra. Cabonne Council’s Communications and Media Officer Dale Jones said all Councils must lodge a submission by 30 June 2015 to show how they will be Fit For the Future. “Cabonne’s present position is to continue as a stand-alone council into the future and to prepare a submission on that basis,” he said. “However a final decision will not be made until Council analyses the findings of the merger business case study and consulta-

tion with the community next month. “Council’s submission will emphasise Ca-bonne’s strong financial sustainability, scale and capacity and the fact that it will be able to meet the government’s key criteria to be Fit for the Future.” Marj Bollinger, Vice Chairman of the Mo-long Advancement Group, who wish to save Cabonne as a standalone council are holding a meeting at the Community Hall in Molong on Thursday 21st May. Marj said, “by attend-ing this meeting it is your opportunity as a ratepayer, for you to be seen and your voice heard to prove that you, as one person, can contribute to making the difference between Cabonne standing along or being eaten up by the State Government to become part of Orange.” Prior to this meeting, there will be an infor-mation session held at the Canowindra High School Hall, Canowindra on Thursday 14th May starting at 7 pm. All interested parties and Councillors are invited to attend.

Boost For Drug And Alcohol Treatment In

The Central WestFederal Member for Calare John Cobb has announced that the Federal Government will again provide more than $2 million to Lyn-don Community for three important local projects. This will enable hundreds of resi-dents to have access to the best specialist drug and alcohol treatments services in the central west. A substantial contribution will be made to the Lyndon Community outreach service of $426,00, of which Lyndon House in Canowindra will share the benefits. Lyndon Community CEO Ed Zarnow be-lieves this renewed commitment has the po-tential to improve the lives of many people in the central west. At the moment, Lyndon House in Canowindra has secure funding up until June 2016 which enables the current programs to continue as well as the running of the House. There will then be a review by the Government of all funding in this sector. Drug and alcohol misuse costs the Australian community over 50 billion dollars annually in healthcare, lost productivity and family break-down. This funding means we can continue to offer drug and alcohol treatment works which can help reduce those costs by helping people control or stop using problem substances.

Women’s BowlsIn another great round of competition, the winner of the District Singles was Ruth Quinn from Forbes, who defeated Cowra’s Leila Burns 25-19, taking out the tournament for a second year in a row. Unfortunately the wet weather cancelled the games on 21st April. The District Pairs competition will be held at Parkes Railway Diggers’ Bowling club from 27th to 29th April. Men’s BowlsSaturday saw the exciting final of the major singles competition between Chris Millburn and Teddy Lawrence. After 13 ends the score was locked 10 all, but Chris soon gained the upper hand and took the win 32-18. On Sun-day, both pennant teams played at home. The 5’s team defeated Eugowra 76-40, and the 7’s team defeated Woodstock with a nerve rack-ing 1 point win. The final score was 61-60. Next week the 5’s will be playing in Cowra, and the 7’s will be playing at home. Organ-isers wish to thank the ladies who supplied lunch, and Ronnie who donated raffle prizes. Squash NewsIf you are looking for a cheap and effective way to warm up, think squash – it really gets the blood pumping, the legs running and the heart thumping. And it’s so much fun! The autumn season starts Monday 20th April for the ladies competition, and Thursday 23rd April for the mixed competition. Balloon Competition RoundupAfter a great start to the 2015 Canowindra International hot air balloon competition, wet weather and windy conditions sabotaged the

final tasks. There were no more flights after Friday afternoon and the competition was forced to end early. It was a close competition, with Australian World Champion Nicola Scaife taking first place, French pilot Clément Seigeot taking second place, and Sean Kavanagh placing third. Congratulations to the winners, and all the balloonists who worked so hard to make this year’s iconic ballooning competition happen, despite the terrible weather conditions.

Ladies Golf The monthly medal & putting competition was held on 15th April, with 11 players in participation. Division 1 winner was Roslyn Partridge with a nett 74. Division 2 winner was Edna Hughes with a nett 73, making her the medal winner in the tournament. The winner of the putting competition was Annette Thomas with a cool 27 putts. Wednesday 22nd will be another Par Even, and the Pennants team will play at home against Grenfell on Thursday 23rd. Men’s GolfRound 3 of the golf championship teed off on Saturday, and Doug Rice took out the tour-nament with a nett 66. Doug Flannery was named runner up. The fifth round on Sunday saw Robby Law-rence nett 70 to take first place, and Matt Devlin was named runner up. Overall winners of championship were Doug Flannery in A Grade; Corey Knight in B Grade; Doug Rice in C Grade. Rugby UnionAfter 3 years of non-competition, the Cudal Cobras took to the playing field on Saturday

afternoon in a match against the Canowindra Pythons. Following a minute’s silence at the start of the game for the 3 young people the town has lost, Chris Noble, Dylan Collier and Stephanie Scott, both teams came out in pouring rain to give the gathered crowd a good show. Charlie Balcombe successfully rounded up enough of the old Cudal Cobras’ team to en-sure an entertaining and competitive game. Wet weather and muddy conditions provided an interesting challenge for players, and the final score was a draw, 7-all.

Rugby LeagueAll three grades played in Burrangong last Sunday, for the second round of the Wood-bridge Cup. The first grade Canowindra team thrashed the locals, 80-10, and are currently in second place on the competition ladder.The Canowindra Tigers league tag team beat the Burrangong Bears with an astounding score of 58-0. Unfortunately the youth league was defeated in their match against the Binalong Brahams. The final score was 26-10. This weekend, first grade take on the Gooloogong Cowboys on Friday night under the lights, from 7:30pm at Tom Clyburn Oval, while the youth league are playing in Eugow-ra. The league tag have a bye.
