Remembering StephSunrise on Sunday at the Oval was a sea of yellow as the residents of Canowindra hon-oured Stephanie Scott. The Canowindra Bal-loon Challenge committee announced earlier in the week that they wanted to dedicate the launch to Stephanie, who had been an English and drama teacher at Leeton High School. As Reverend Jonathan Williams uttered a prayer hot air balloons decorated with yellow streamers rose into the brightening sky along with hundreds of small, yellow balloons that were released in memory of Stephanie. The community of Leeton also remembered Stephanie on Saturday as hundreds attended a lunch in Mountford Park. Stephanie’s father, Bob Scott, spoke at the event, saying “our wishes for the future are that you remember her as the girl she was…the tragedy’s hap-pened, we can’t change that. We can’t deal

with it any better than we have. But we do know that we had a great girl and we are going to continue to remember her for what she was.” Stephanie’s story has touched people across Australia with social media campaigns such as #yellowforscotty and #putoutyourdress, showing what an amazing woman she was to people, even those she never met. Brides across the country threaded yellow into their bouquets, their dresses and in other aspects of their weddings on Saturday, which should have been the day Steph married her partner of five years Aaron, to show their support for the Scott family. The communities of Leeton, Canowindra and beyond are united in grief and support for the Scott and Woolley fami-lies and in remembering the beautiful Steph.

Our town has this past week been in unim-aginable shock and in a spotlight that shone worldwide for a reason we will never begin to understand. During all of this, your town too, has been riding the same rollercoaster of disbelief and grief and we are feeling your pain. Today with immense sadness we said our farewell to your beautiful girl Stephanie Scott. She will never be forgotten and will be always be in our hearts. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aaron and the Scott and Woolley families as they await her arrival home. They have inspired us in many ways and we thank them for allowing our town to grieve with them. Surround them with love and may they find the peace they need to heal. Our town will be thinking of your town as you say your final farewell to an angel who has touched so many. Light her way home Canowindra.

Local couple Ross and Jan Bowd celebrat-ed their 65th Wedding Anniversary on 15th April. They were married at St. Paul’s Pres-byterian Church in Canowindra in 1950 and drove to Coolangatta for their honeymoon. Both have lived, worked and been active members of the Canowindra community all their lives. Their 17 year retirement to King-scliff was a very happy time for them both and this was followed by a return to Canow-indra 2 years ago. Ross and Jan have three sons Bob, Mick and Jack, 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren who are very much part of their lives. They are a devoted couple who have achieved a wonderful milestone. Congratulations to you both.

A Message From Reverend Jono

Over the last few weeks and indeed the past twelve months, Canowindra and surrounding districts have been through difficult and try-ing times. I’ve been asked how we can help each other in our grief and loss. If you don’t know what to say, then it is best to say nothing. Just be with each other and listen. It’s amazing how valuable it is to be heard. Don’t be afraid to say that you’re griev-ing; there is great strength in vulnerability. If you’re hurting, please tell someone. Find somebody you can trust - a family member, a friend, or a professional, and speak out. Lifeline, Beyondblue, the Community Health Centre and the Church leaders in this com-munity can assist with support and pastoral care. In the time I’ve lived in Canowindra, I’ve observed a community that excels in support for one another and I’ve benefitted from that loving support myself. It was an awe-inspiring privilege to partici-pate in the Balloon tribute to Stephanie Scott early last Sunday morning; a moving way to show support for each other when we have felt helpless to do anything at all. The balloonists themselves wanted to do something, to contribute towards Canowin-dra, a town that they have come to love. This is what Canowindra inspires people to do. I prayed that our prayers for each other would rise as the balloons rose into the sky. People from around the world are thinking of us and supporting us in prayer. Canowindra is a strong community. We will come through this, because we naturally sup-port and care for each other. May you be blessed to be a blessing to one another.

Same Old Vic, Brand New Bar

From stained glass windows to tall ceilings and wooden floors, the family owned and operated Old Vic Inn has a familiar heritage charm, and for the first time in nearly fifty years, the hotel is now serving beer on tap.When the Old Vic Inn originally closed its doors in 1967, it was reopened two years later as a convalescent home, which then closed down in 1995. Since coming into ownership in 2003, the Beasley family have refurbished many of the facilities while main-taining its value as a historical hotel with all the modern and convenient trimmings. A new bar has been built and installed in the old pub, featuring a modern security shutter and a custom-made stained glass window which adds to the ambience of the room. Roving Rally Comes To CanowindraDown at the Canowindra Showground, trav-ellers are parking their vans and setting up their camps, ready to be mesmerised by the larger-than-life hot air balloons taking to the sky this week. Self-described ‘Grey Nomad’, Ron Smalley is excited to be in Canowindra to experience the International Balloon Challenge, taking the opportunity to explore the local areas and a town that is “much bigger than I thought!” He couldn’t have picked a better spot to watch the take off than a campsite at the Showground, where he is spoilt for views and feels close to all the action: “I woke up this morning and we could hear them getting ready. Then I looked up and saw the balloon – I thought it was on top of the van!” Ron is travelling with the Caravan Club of Australia on a five week ‘Roving Rally’ adven-ture across NSW. Coming all the way from Camden, this is his first time stopping in town to see the iconic hot air balloons in action.

As the Treasurer of the Caravan Club of Australia, Ron is proud to be a part of the 5 van convoy, which is made up of club mem-bers who are caravanning enthusiasts as well as friends. Fellow traveller Leah remembers looking out over Canowindra’s stunning surround-ings from the sky during her memorable first time in a hot air balloon 18 years ago. “It was so beautiful up there up in the clouds. I felt so happy!” The friendly group were looking forward to a relaxing, but “very entertaining week” in Canowindra, with the Balloon Glow Spec-tacular, golfing, and a trip to Eugowra on the cards. These 10 keen travellers have stopped in Canowindra for a week out of their sched-ule, which will take them to Dubbo next, and eventually on to Northern NSW.

We have just finished reading this book and highly recommend it.

IMAGE: Telstra upgrades disrupted mobile services over the weekend

Mobile services were down from Thursday to Monday, with severe problems occurring from Saturday, causing issues for locals and visi-tors to the town. The interruptions were caused by scheduled upgrades and an issue involving the antennas at the mobile site which provides coverage to Canowindra. The Canowindra Phoenix was approached early on Monday about the situation. We im-mediately contacted Communications Minis-ter Malcolm Turnbull, and the Hon. Jon Cobb, Federal Member for Calare and Cabonne Council. Within fifteen minutes, the Phoenix was con-tacted by Corporate Affairs at Telstra with a plan to quickly rectify the situation. By midday

on Monday, mobile services were back up. Telstra has apologised for the interruptions caused to our community during this time. Unfortunately, at no stage did Telstra advise the council or anyone in the community that this upgrade work would take place. “That is not the standard of service we ex-pect to provide our customers and we will be doing all we can to make sure that does not happen again in the future”, said Scott Curtin, Telstra Western NSW AGM. Going forward, we hope Telstra will liaise with the community about disruptive mainte-nance and upgrade work as this affects every-body, including business, and frankly it is not good enough.

Men’s Bowls NewsSunday was a fantastic day for the Men’s Bowls tournament, with both Canowindra sides taking out a great victory. The 5’s team beat Grenfell, scoring 77 points to Grenfell’s 43, and the 7’s team took out a win against Gooloogong, scoring 70 points to their 50. Next Sunday both of the pennant teams will be playing at home in Canowindra. Due to the current unavailability of players, teams will be listed on the notice board. On Saturday, the men’s minor 4’s final was played in great spirits. B. Bates, P. Sargent, N. Knight & B. Robson defeated K. Fisher, P. Kennedy, C. Balcombe & B. Rose. Heather defeated Roger, 15 to 11 to remain Hen of the Pen. The major singles final will be on Saturday, with Chris Milburn and Matt Lawrence both in great form. Minor and major pairs are now open; the dates can be found on the notice board.

Women’s Bowls NewsUnfortunately, only a few ends of bowls were played last Tuesday 7th April, and due to the wet weather only a handful of bowlers were able to attend. On Thursday 9th April, Heather Hoad took on Colleen Crump in the second Major Sin-gles match, resulting in a victory awarded to Heather with a score of 25 points to Col-leen’s 17. The Women’s Bowls group would like to give a special thank you to Moyna Rue who was an excellent marker on the day. Rugby LeagueThe first round of the rugby league Wood-bridge Cup took place this Saturday at Canowindra’s Tom Clyburn Oval with a grudge match between the Canowindra Ti-gers and the Cargo Blue Heelers. The usual atmosphere of tense rivalry was replaced with black and yellow armbands, worn by the team members in memory of Canowindra locals Stephanie Scott and Dy-

lan Collyer. Prior to the first grade game, players re-leased yellow balloons into the sky after a very touching and emotional minute of si-lence. The Canowindra Tigers took out the win over the Cargo Blue Heelers, beating them 42 points to 32.

Golf ResultsThe Canowindra Club Golf Championships kicked off last weekend, with the first round on Saturday and the second round on Sun-day. The winner on Saturday was Corey Knight, who had a great round, making 76 off the stick with a net score of 63.Sunday’s winner was Pete Nicka, with a net score of 68, who won on a countback from Rowley McCall, who came second. Soccer District ResultsThe Cowra Eagles, who played at home against Bathurst City in the Bathurst District Football over the weekend, wore yellow arm-bands and held a minute of silence on Sun-day before their game as a tribute to the late Stephanie Scott. After playing a tough match, both 1st and 2nd grade teams lost to the visiting side. Toby Baker was named “Man of the Match” in what was the teams’ first game at the top of the competition. Team member Tim Waite said, “In the end the more experienced Colts side ran away with the game, but not without a good fight from the Cowra players. Many of the players will take plenty from the game and will be better for it.” Next week will see both games playing at home again.

Canowindra Fitness Path UpdateWork is due to begin on upgrading the Canowindra Fitness Path on Monday April 20th. The path is to be ripped up and re-placed with a beautiful new cement path.

Canowindra Sports Trust and Fitness Path Working party member Julie Middleton ad-vised “Whilst the upgrade is going to be fan-tastic it unfortunately means that the path will be closed from next Monday for approxi-mately 6 weeks.” She added that the new path will incor-porate pavers purchased by local residents last year. “We are excited that the pavers will finally be installed into the path just in front of the amenities block as previously planned”. Once the new path is complete work will commence on mulching around the King Kong and landscaping around the exer-cise sites.
