Teachers believe the Government has left us with no choice but to take further action that could include further strikes. This is because the Govern- ment won’t guarantee that under Local Schools, Local Decisions children’s learning conditions and teacher working conditions will be protected. We know that when changes like this were made in Victoria Class sizes increased and thousands of teaching positions were cut. Currently, the Government guarantees that schools are staffed based on number of students. This means each school has a certain number of classroom teachers, executive teachers, specials teachers and administrative and support staff. This staffing allocation and the class sizes policy are protected by a staffing agreement which will finish at the end of Term 3 this year. The Government wants to give schools a local budget instead. This means it will be the amount of money, not the number of students, which will determine how many teachers, executive and support staff will be at schools. Local Federation Branch President, Mr Mark Edwards expressed grave concerns about the future of public schools if these changes are implemented. “Teachers are simply asking, through their union, to be involved in shaping this major change to how schools are run. What is disguised as the opportunity to allow principal’s the opportunity to make decisions based on a school’s needs, is really just a cost cutting measure,” he says. “The little information that we are give indicates that the move will see schools being run as a business, not as an educational institution. Decisions will be based on sticking to a budget, not satisfying student needs”. If the Governments cuts the budget then schools may have to cut the number of teachers provide less subject choices or special programs, increase class sizes or cut the number of executives and support staff. This will only make staffing of regional schools like those in and around Canowindra even more difficult. Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said the draft LEP and draft Cabonne Settlement Strategy recognises the importance of minimising the fragmentation of agricultural land and the flexibility to allow alternative income sources through tourism and other land uses compatible with farming activities. “The new LEP will provide a clear direction for how development and economic opportunity can proceed in the Shire,” Cr Dowling said. “Our existing LEP is more than 20 years old and does not necessarily reflect the new opportunities or challenges now facing Cabonne,” Cr Dowling said. “We need to ensure we promote sustainable development and an amenity that attracts people and economic development, but protects the assets that make Cabonne a great place to live, work and play.” The draft LEP and settlement strategy is on public exhibition until 22 June 2012 and a series of information sessions will be held throughout the Shire during that period. Among the major elements are new business, industrial and residential zones in Molong and Canowindra and an extended industrial area in Manildra. The Council proposes to replace the existing Village Zones in Molong and Canowindra with zones for business, industry and residential use, along with major recreational uses to protect the amenity of residential areas and enable businesses to develop with fewer constraints on their operations. A new industrial zone for the major industrial area to the south of Manildra, which includes the Manildra flour and canola mills, will allow the area to be extended to attract new business. Cr Dowling said the site would be well positioned on the Broken Hill rail line, with connections to the Mitchell and Newell Highways. Another feature of the draft LEP is the recognition of the heritage value of 243 items listed for protection in a bid to enhance the significant historic buildings, streetscapes and landscapes that define much of the Shire’s character. The Mayor the said the draft LEP also seeks to achieve a balance between the need to minimise the fragmentation of agricultural land and the flexibility to allow alternative income sources through tourism and other compatible land uses. Copies of the draft LEP and draft Cabonne Settlement Strategy can be viewed at Cabonne Council’s offices, post offices, Central West libraries (including Orange Library) across the Shire, and Council’s website www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au Informal information sessions will be held in: Mullion Creek 22 May Molong 24 May Yeoval 29 May Eugowra 30 May Cargo 31 May Cudal 5 June 5 Canowindra 12 June and Cumnock 14 June. All sessions will run from 7-8.30pm except at Cumnock where the sessions will run from 7.30-9pm. A number of fact sheets have been prepared to help people read the LEP and summarise key development outcomes and controls for particular locations and issues. These fact sheets are available online at www.cabonne.nsw.gov.au > Planning and Heritage > Draft Local Environmental Plan. Further information is available from the Council on 6392 3200. CANOWINDRA TAKE ON EUGOWRA AT HOME First Grade and the League Tag Tigresses had a very well earned rest last weekend with a bye, Youth League travelled to Grenfell and had a very successful day, taking out the game with a 30-0 win. Well done boys. This Sunday all three grades play against Eugowra at Tom Clyburn Oval. Kick off will see the Tigresses take on the Geagles at 11.40am the team they beat in the Grand Final last year 4-2, so this promises to be a hard game with both teams playing their best. Youth League run on at 12.40pm, and First Grade at 2pm. Come on up to the Oval and support the Tigers and Tigresses, they will be on fire after last weekend's break.

LOCAL LEGEND Lawrence's IGA is proud to advise the breakdown of their Loyalty Points programme collected over 2011. The total amount of $33,681 was accrued, with $27,465 redeemed by customers. Community Chest raised $6,216 from customer allocation, with IGA Community Chest contributing $2,360, bringing the total Community Chest amount to $8,576, which was rounded up to $10,000. From the coffers of the local Community Chest programme: Canowindra Fitness Park received $5,000; Canowindra Men's Shed accepted $2,500; and Canowindra Clay Target Inc got $2,500; meaning all monies from the account were disbursed into our community. You are credited Loyalty Points a number of ways, other than for every dollar spent you earn one cent: a percentage is credited when you purchase a product with the IGA CC logo printed on the label; any weekly catalogue item bearing the IGA CC logo contributes; and two cents is donated from every IGA Signature product sold.

PYTHONS NEWS Saturday was Sponsors' and Members' Day at the Python’s home game. The match was a local derby against Cudal and a warm sunny afternoon saw a good roll up to watch the game. A determined Cudal side pressured Canowindra for the first 15 minutes and the game was all locked up but after the Pythons scored their first try the momentum swung and it was all Canowin-dra from there on. Tries went to Daniel Bowd, Mitch Collins (3), Tom Abbott & Mark Fisher. Tom Abbott kicked 4 goals. The final score was 38 – 0 to Canowindra. Points: Daniel Williams 3; Daniel Bowd 2; Jack Knight 1; and William Ryan 1. Players Player was Daniel Williams (yay Dude!!!) The players wood raffle was won by Todd Wyburn who kindly donated this on to the Canowindra Fitness Path project and this will be raffled out the front of Lawrence’s IGA next Saturday 26/5. Gold coin donations to the path collected at the gate on Saturday totalled $223.40 which brings the overall total of donations taken at the gate this season to over $430.

BANJO PLAYERS & STORY TELLERS Folk@Canowindra is on again this Sunday 27 May at taste Canowindra 42 Ferguson Street. As well as a diverse array of open mike acts, we will be featuring James and Sue Daley from Portland, NSW. Sue and James have made the trek out to Canowindra a few times before, and their music has been enjoyed. As the ghosts of John Fahey and Mississippi John Hurt hound James Daley, he plays guitar and banjo to the point of obsession: which works out well for Sue Daley. Sue knows some stories, stories that have ascended to myth, and have anchored themselves in her bones, and she needed a man obsessed to bring them to life… James has crafted the breath and heartbeat for the poetry of Sues lyrics. And Sue sings them in a voice described by Kevin Walsh as ‘Spooky and cool’ and by reviewer Julius Timmerman (JAM) as ‘sweetly caressing’. As usual, there is free entry, with a voluntary donation to the feature act. Coffee, cake, wine and meals are all available at taste during the performances. Any enquiries to Nerida Cuddy, 0429 048 603 or www.nerida.info.

FITNESS PATH UPDATE The Fitness Path committee will be running a wood raffle this Saturday 26 May out the front of Lawrence's IGA. The fire wood is supplied by the Pythons Canowindra Rugby Club, with many thanks going to Stuart and Alex Gavin, Daniel Bowd and Todd Wyburn for their efforts and donation. While on the Rugby, the Club has now deposited $447.30 from donations from their gate entry takings. Remember all home games are "FREE" this year, with a voluntary donation to the Fitness Path being taken at the gate. Keep in mind the Fitness Path: Have A Ball! will be held Saturday 14 July at the Services Club Function Centre, with "1,000s" of prizes to be won or auctioned, thanks to the hard working committee: Kath Balcombe; Lana Brown; David Francis; Jo Gaigals; Tracy Lamb; Julie Middleton; Margaret Morris; Rohan Toole; and Graham Rice. Tickets will be going on sale Wednesday 23 May at Canowindra Newsagency or Bill Paul's Carpet Centre at $25 per person, tables of 10 and bring your own supper. There will be live music and the dress code is Frocks & Ties, so dust off your dancing shoes, it's a great excuse to dress up and raise money for a great community project.
