Canowindra boy, born and bred – Richard Payten

One thing Richard Payten fondly remembers about his childhood days in Canowindra is the sound of Jaffa lollies rattling under the seats down the sloping floor of the local cin-ema during movie screenings. The cinema is now of course Billy Pauls’ Carpet Centre on Gaskill Street. As for Richard, he’s now a partner in one of Australia’s most successful movie produc-

LettersTo Editor,This letter is written in support for Diana Frost and her opinion of the costs and charges, of any services supplied by Telstra. To put in a land line they want $300, even though there are lines either side of where you want it, and once it’s on they then pro-ceed to charge you for it. I wanted to put the internet on, to do that you have to put the phone line in. What a good lurk that would be, Telstra offers no service unless you pay for it. On pre-paid mobile phones, monthly charg-es apply in 30 days, unless you top it up and they can confiscate any money left over. USE IT OR LOSE IT, was being used by Telstra long before Wayne Swan thought of it. The laws that govern Telstra are loop holes in the constituted law of the land; they are dictators that use bullying tactics. That’s where they get the money from to give gold-en handshakes to their corporate chiefs.

One went back to his own country with $14 million. It’s a disgrace and an insult to the intelligence of all Australians! We are not on a level playing field. We are behind the eight ball from the start of play. We have birth rights and also have our democratic international human rights. It’s time we all started speaking up for ourselves. When the truth is spoken there will always be victims and casualties. Don’t let these corpo-rate chiefs camouflage the truth, have your say and have an opinion.

McClintock’s Canowindra Delivers for FarmersPictured above is a Kubota M100GX tractor, widely known as a utility tractor with 100 HP, and fitted with a challenge loader, carrying two large rectangle bales of hay. Richard McLiesh, Sales Manager at McClintock’s in Canowindra said ‘Sam and Paul Camilleri, purchased the tractor in December 2013, and the tractor is used mainly for shifting hay, loading and unloading the large square bales of hay and for spraying crops and Lu-cerne.’ Sam and Paul Camilleri, purchased their property on the Gooloogong Road around 12 months ago, adding to their holding in Barry, near Blayney. They have upgraded their sec-ond hand equipment to a new Kubota, and also added a Krone baler and a 1000 litre x 10 metre spray boom to their stable of equip-ment. Richard went on to say, they are valued cus-tomers as they are now purchasing the ma-jority of their equipment from McClintock’s. McClintock’s has a policy of partnering with their customers to understand their needs

and provide exceptional after sales service.Gary Lewis, the newly appointed Manager at Canowindra Branch of McClintock’s has just joined the company and one factor which attracted him to this role was the fact that they are part of a larger dealership with out-lets in Forbes, Grenfell, West Wyalong, as well as Canowindra. They have been a local service provider for over forty years and of-fer an extensive array of spare parts, work-shop facilities and resources for the tractor, truck and plant equipment market. In addi-tion, they currently employ 47 full time staff at their outlets. Dark Skies Driven Off In Memorable Millamolong Polo Carnival

Well, the skies darkened and darkened on Saturday, the opening day of the Millamolong John Davis Volvo Polo Carnival, but it must have been the enthusiasm and excitement on and around the pitch drove the rain away and allowed a memorable fast-action two-day event. Teams from all over NSW were there to compete in a continuous schedule of clash-es, topped by the John Davis Volvo event and the prestigious Hector King Trophy. And the crowds gathered with the clouds, with several hundred spectators watching the events from corporate tents and special sheltered Giant and Family Giant Sofas, with the Trough and Fodder Cafe and Beer & Gear Bar close by providing meals and drinks. It was, as the organisers promised, an event “with the feel of picnic races [alongside] the fastest and most aggressive polo available in Australia.” And it was an exciting weekend for kids

too, with family events that included bicycle polo, a Volvo versus horse race, pony rides, bouncing castle, face painting, vintage cars and a lolly drop from a helicopter. That’s apart from the 10 polo teams what battled it out on both days for the John Davis and Hector King trophies. Channel Seven’s James Tobin was there too, broadcasting live inserts from the tour-nament to the morning show Sunrise. It was Goulburn Polo Club that won the John Davis Volvo classic, a triumph the club says it’ll be celebrating for weeks. As for the car verus horse challenge, the Volvo won “by a nostril.” The weekend also meant a big boost for the Millamolong Charity Fund which sup-ports a range of charities including CARE Australia and Riding For the Disabled in Or-ange, adding to the $290,000 raised since the annual carnival started.

NEW HOMES | RENOVATIONS | ALTERATIONSEXTENSIONS | CONCRETING | ROOFING

How Colour Affects our LivesHave you ever wondered why you lean to-wards one colour or another? The truth is everybody sees colour in a very unique way and depending on your mood you will like some colours more than others on any particular day. Colour psychology can be objective, but also very powerful when decorating a room or selecting a logo or selling a new clothing label. If you look at all McDonald’s Restaurants you will notice that they use red in their Logo as this colour stimulates appetite, and even the car manufacturers use colour to sell their latest cars. Bearing in mind when you choose colours for your home you may like to think about how each colour is visualised by the world. Yellow: Being the lightest hue of the spec-trum, the colour psychology of yellow is up-lifting and illuminating, offering hope, happi-ness, cheerfulness and fun. Green: Green is the colour of growth, the colour of spring, of renewal. It renews and re-stores depleted energy. It calms the stresses of modern living. Blue: This is a colour that seeks peace and tranquillity above everything else, promoting both physical and mental relaxation. It reduc-es stress, creating a sense of calmness, re-laxation and order the colour most favoured by men. Red: The colour red can stimulate the ap-petite .It is the colour of passion and red is energising. It excites the emotions and moti-vates us to take action.

As you can see colour effects our lives with-out you even knowing it. Next month we will explore the neutral palette for your home.

Flu Vaccine: Who Really Needs It?

Each year in Australia, influenza causes an estimated 3,000 deaths in older people. However, it’s not just older people who are affected by the flu; rates of flu injection are highest among young children. Children un-der the age of 5 are less likely to show symp-toms of the flu (fever and cough) so you may not know that your child has contracted the infection. Most children cope well with the flu but are vulnerable to new strains of the flu (Swine Flu) due to their undeveloped im-mune systems. The greatest concern for doc-tors and patients is the danger, not just of the flu itself, but severe complications such as pneumonia and the effect of influenza on ex-isting medical conditions. Everyone 65 years or older should have the flu vaccine. As well, at any age, you should be vaccinated if you have ongoing illness such as diabetes, kidney disease, asthma, heart or circulation prob-lems, or compromised immunity diseases. Please visit your local Pharmacy for more information about the flu vaccine – be pre-pared for the upcoming cold months.

IMAGE: Gurbreet, Pip and Gurbrinder – abuse erupted again after this photo was taken.

Gaskill Street Residents Cite Constant Abuse Canowindra High School is re-launching its “Back Off Bully” program on Friday the 21st of March, and it couldn’t come at a more rel-evant time for three of our residents who are under constant abuse in their flats behind Gaskill Street. Gurbreet Singh and his wife Gurbrinder, and their neighbour Pip Thompson, say that for months now they’ve been targets of abuse and bullying by a heroin addicted amputee who lives in their complex, and that there’s been no real police action except a “family conference” despite constant complaints – 17 calls in seven months by one particular resident. It’s been a nightmare for Gurbreet and Gur-brinder, from the Punjab in North India, who settled in Canowindra six years ago. They’re a dignified community-minded couple who’ve grown to love “the very nice people in Canowindra – much better than in any city.”Gurbreet works the night shift at the Manil-dra flour mill, plays cricket for Canowindra and Cowra, and his wife is currently studying

child care. Their neighbour’s harrassment has shocked them – almost daily outbursts of abuse and foul language against them and their Indian friends including “We don’t want you f***ing Indians here,” and “Get in your flat and stay there.” Recently Gurbreet found his company uniform splashed with bleach and almost ruined on the clothes line in apparent retali-ation for complaints to the police. Pip Thompson, who manages the antique store on Gaskill Street, says she’s also com-plained about constant drug use in an ad-jacent flat, with marijuana fumes “so thick that they invade my place and are making me sick.” She says it reflects “an undercurrent of drugs, alcohol abuse and domestic violence that exists in Canowindra.” Gurbreet Singh and his wife are now ap-plying for an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) against their abuser.

Health Service Manager Susie Harrison said the service is well equipped with staff, tools and resources to provide quality health care to the Canowindra community. “We have a dedicated team of doctors and nurses who are highly skilled and committed to serving the people of Canowindra,” she said. “And we are delighted to welcome to Canowindra, a fulltime General Practitioner: Dr Varadaraj (Raj) Kadambi GP to our team, meaning we now have three GPs”. Like most small facilities, Canowindra Hospital has a busy Emergency Department (ED). A typical patient journey from the mo-ment a person enters the Emergency De-partment looks a bit like this:1. You arrive at the Emergency Department seeking medical attention for an injury or an illness.2. Shortly after you arrive a Registered Nurse will assess you. This is called “triage”. Triaging a patient involves the nurse as-sessing your general appearance, your pre-senting problem, your medical history, and surveying your general wellbeing and pain levels. 3. The nurse will then allocate a triage score (ATS) to you depending on your clini-cal urgency. For example, triage 1 being the most urgent and life threatening and triage 5 being less urgent and non-life threatening.4. After you are seen by the nurse and tri-aged you will proceed to receive treatment at the appropriate time and place “People should be aware that Emergency Department is for emergency presentations only, and is not a replacement for making an appointment with their local GP,” Mrs Har-rison said. Canowindra Health Service can be con-tacted on 6340 3033.

Swimming Club ReportEight laps of freestyle were swum for the 200m freestyle Championships this weeks and the Spoon final was just squeezed in be-fore lightning closed the night early. Amy Harrison and Zac Giger were the only improvers in the Spoon heats as both im-proved their times by a second. Will Ward took 2 seconds from his time in the semis which saw him the first swimmer off in the Final. The impending storm may have pushed him to a better time and in the final, Will bettered his time by 4 seconds and as such he was too fast for the Spoon. Fighting out the title behind him were Laura Flannery and Dominic Smyth, with Laura win-ning the Spoon in a personal best time of 19 seconds. 400m freestyle is the final Championship this week so sign up before Wednesday and be ready for roll call at 5:45pm. With no relay, all that is left is the Presenta-tion Night which will be on Friday 4th April following Swimming Club’s AGM which will commence at 6pm.
