Their sixth child John was Nicole Kidman’s great great grandfather. Their eighth child Ju- lia married John Grant Jr of Canowindra. Stranger Than “Strangerland”– Nicole’s Family Links With Canowindra

As the production team for the movie “Stran-gerland” was surveying downtown Canowin-dra locations this week, the most fascinating coincidences emerged linking our town with the movie and one of its three stars, Nicole Kidman. First, who would have thought that Nicole has a connection to Canowindra’s founding Finn and Grant families? Well she has, according to a family tree drawn up by 92-year-old Berna Wright, grand-daughter of T.J. Finn and cousin of Canowin-dra resident Anne Ward. And this is how it goes: Nicole Kidman’s great great great grandparents were John and Mary Finn from Tralee in County Kerry who settled in Hartley in 1839. They had eight children. Their second child Michael married Elizabeth Kelly, and their eld-est son was the legendary T.J. Finn, Canowin-dra’s virtual founding father. Their sixth child John was Nicole Kidman’s great great grandfather. Their eighth child Ju-lia married John Grant Jr of Canowindra.

And all these family links make Nicole the fourth cousin of Richard Payten, the “Stran-gerland” executive producer, who is also in fact the brother of Anne Ward. According to the family, Nicole herself is intrigued with the complex family links and may well visit Berna during the “Stranger-land” filming. As for the shoot itself, we now have an initial schedule. A HUGE THANK YOU to Lynne Russell, Ste-phen Russell, Stewart Russell, Ash Wright,

To Editor, Regarding Diana Frost in issue 284 Diana, I don’t know whether people living in rural areas realise just how badly disad-vantaged we are when it comes to internet connection. I have only lived in Canowindra for 4 years and am still not used to how slow and pathetic the service is to our area, and I do have ADSL. My ADSL is as slow as dial up would be in the city (any city). I have friends who live in Coffs Harbour who are raving about how good the new NBN is. They have no idea that we don’t even have the speed & efficiency that their old connec-tion gave. Also we don’t have the choice of service providers that exist in metropolitan areas. Just another city VS country issue I suppose.

Celebrating International Women’s Day

On Friday 7th March, around 30 ladies from in and around Canowindra enjoyed a wonder-ful Morning Tea at the Deli Lama to celebrate International Women’s Day. The Canowindra Phoenix, together with First Choice Credit Union and Yates Baker McLean sponsored the event. Cheryl Newsom, from the Canowindra Phoenix welcomed all of the ladies and in particular Jane Atkinson, who was the Guest Speaker. Jane went on to say that ‘the speech gave her an opportunity to reflect over the years in her life, and she broke this down into slices of age groups.’ It started with her growing up on the farm in Stockinbingal, and then moving onto High School in both Temo-ra and Wagga, followed by Ag College. From ages 20-30 she spent time in the outback as a governess and where she also met her now husband, Rob. Jane has two daughters, Lau-ra and Lucy. Jane has overcome personal di-agnosis of a disease which has no cure, and has asked the question, Why Me? In true spirit Jane went onto raise funds for Arthri-tis NSW and combined with four other ladies to ride a bike from Vietnam to Cambodia in November 2013. They raised over $30,000. Jane is undertaking more study and hopes in 2015 to grow her mediation and farm suc-cession planning work. Jane finished her speech with an emotional thought, ‘However, more than anything, I want my daughters to have the opportunity to become women who are the best version of themselves they can be. I want them to be happy and to grow up knowing that life is not always fair, and that life is what you chose to make of the opportunities you are given.’ Funds raised from the morning tea are go-ing towards CWA and approximately $300 was raised on Friday.

The Rural UpdateThis week’s market has seen a major increase in the market, particularly over the last 4 weeks. The cattle market was up to 60c kg better over some grades on Monday. Tuesday saw the fat lambs make over $6.00 per kg, an increase from 3 months ago where they were selling at $4.80 kg. The KMWL top price was $200.00 which was sold on behalf of Ian Tremain from the Cranbury area which were 2nd cross lambs – out of first cross ewes by a dorset ram. In addition, store lambs were making up to $100.00. With the early break, lots of oats have been planted and the local lucerne growth has been fantastic. Most farmers have gone from no feed to plenty of feed within two weeks. Paul said that, ‘good follow up rain is very important now – we are only 25 ml away from a very good autumn, which we haven’t seen for 10 years.’

Canowindra’s New Swimming Pool – Topping the McCarron Family Legacy

Sitting under pink-bloomed crepe myrtle trees, watching the rippling blue waters and official opening ceremony of the newly-reno-vated Canowindra Pool, it wasn’t difficult last Sunday to imagine what wonderful leisure and recreational boon the facility is going to be in coming summers. The opening attracted a large crowd of Canowindra community supporters and shire dignitaries who listened from the shade of the trees to speeches by Cabonne’s Mayor Ian Gosper, Beaucoup Aquatics development manager Michael Hoy and Charlie McCarron, the community doyen whose uncle opened the original pool 60 years ago.It was thus perfectly fitting that Charlie should perform the ribbon cutting ceremony on Sunday. In his speech, Ian Gosper paid tribute to fellow-councillors Anthony Durkin and Kevin Walker, along with the former mayor Bob Dowling, who made the new pool possible by funding it from council reserves rather than relying on government grants.

Charlie McCarron told the gathering how his uncle Charles “started lobbying for a swimming pool in Canowindra in 1934” when he was chairman of the Shires Association. It took another 20 years before the origi-nal 33-yard swimming pool and toddlers pool were built and opened in 1954. “The wheels of council turned slowly but they needed to be oiled very often,” Charlie observed. “The council’s lack of urgency annoyed Charlie so he took on the role of organising cement supplies and other necessary parts to build the pool.” Charles McCarron not only got a pool dedi-cated to his name but also an OBE awarded by the Queen in 1961 for his services to local government. And thanks to his legacy we’ve now got “a 25-metre lap pool, new program pool, children’s water playground as well as solar heating, new club room and plant rooms, new shade sails and state of the art pump and filtration technology.”

Words you should never use in Insurance: Here are common “wrong words” that could slow down or impede an otherwise legitimate insurance claim. ‘Sorry’ - Don’t Assume anything - Without sounding insensitive, try to avoid saying “I’m sorry” because it can be interpreted as an ad-mission of fault. Describe what happened to the best of your ability and stick to the facts. ‘In my opinion’ - Don’t offer your opinion. Just give the cold, hard facts. . . . Don’t say, ‘I think,’ ‘I feel,’ ‘I felt.’ No touchy-feely stuff. For example, following a car accident, peo-ple can rarely provide an accurate estimate of the rate, speed and flow of traffic. Unless you were staring at the speedometer, you don’t know how fast you were going. ‘Flood’ - Policyholders often use the “F” word inappropriately, and it can trigger an alarm with insurers since flood damage (as we have seen in the media of late) is not cov-ered under many standard home policies. To an insurance company, “flood” means water from a nearby lake, stream, river or other body of water. Many people believe their house is flooded because it’s full of water - but it’s not a flood by the insurance definition. If your water damage did not come from an overflow of a nearby lake, stream, river or other body of water, don’t even say the word “flood.” If your house is filled with water due to a burst pipe, it’s not considered a flood. When making an insurance claim, what you say can mean the difference between fast payment and a nightmarish process. In-surance companies are sensitive to certain words. Of course, lying to your insurance company or misrepresenting facts is fraud and your claim will surely be denied if the insurer finds out. But using the right words to accurately describe your problem is impor-tant.

NSW Seniors Week is presented by the De-partment of Family and Community Services and is the largest annual celebration of sen-iors in the southern hemisphere. In 2014, NSW Seniors Week will be turning 56 years young and the NSW Government, community and commercial organizations will be holding hundreds of free or discounted events across NSW between 15 - 23 March. To find out more about these events, please visit http://www.nswseniorsweek.com.au/home and check out the events page. This year there is something new for you to try and enjoy whether it be arts and crafts, technology, health and wellbeing or sport. The theme Live Life! Celebrates active, healthy, independent seniors involved in their communities. Across the State, seniors can join in hundreds of free or specially discount-ed events. NSW Seniors Week is for people aged over 60 in the southern hemisphere. It’s also for people aged 50 and older who have a lifelong disability or are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.

Hearing IssuesAustralian Hearing is encouraging seniors to make their hearing health a priority. Accord-ing to leading research, hearing loss is a com-mon issue among older Australians. Getting your hearing checked is an easy way to learn more about your hearing and what can be done to help. Consider your hearing as you do having your blood pressure checked. It’s so important. Australian Hearing Orange manager, Debra Clarke-McSephney, said Seniors Week was the perfect time for people to do something about their hearing and have a free hearing check for seniors. “A hearing check only takes around 15 min-utes of your time and measures what sounds you can and cannot hear,” Debra says. For more information, or to book an ap-pointment call 6393 0500. Australian Hear-ing Orange is located on the corner of Lords Place and Kite Street, Orange. The centre also offers regular services in Bathurst, Cow-ra, Forbes, Parkes and Condobolin.

How are you really enjoying being ‘older’?As we get older there are normal changes of the body that need to be managed however these changes which are not true diseases are often described as diseases needing treatment. Many of the health problems associated with ageing can be managed effectively with simple modification to diet and lifestyle. Nutritional deficiency diseases are brought about by changes in gut health, use of refined or processed foods, medications and other substances, hormonal change, and by food intolerance or allergy. If you’re feeling a bit ‘stodgy’, bloated, or not as well as you’d like try this simple test. Write down how you feel, then cut out all white foods from your diet – that means milk, white bread, white potato, white sugar, and so on, for just a week. Then compare how you feel with your notes. At Central West Naturopathic Cowra, the process of age-related change is well under-stood, and the impact of over-medication and inadequate nutrition is continually be-ing scrutinized. Their Naturopath has nearly 40 years’ experience in health management and nutritional correction of chronic health disturbances. Many clients have found true well-being and regained vitality and the en-joyment of life with simple changes. To coin a phrase – without change there will be no change. If you want personalised assistance to re-gain your wellbeing phone 6342 3887 for an appointment.

Why should I have a solicitor draw my Will when I can buy a Will Pack for $20? If you make your Will correctly you have saved money. If you get it wrong it can be an expensive mistake.Examples:Mary is your favourite niece and you leave her $500. Mary witnesses your Will. Mary’s gift will fail and she cannot inherit the $500 un-less the other beneficiaries consent. Bill is your daughter’s husband. Bill wit-nesses your Will. Your daughter’s gift will fail unless the other beneficiaries consent to her inheriting. Other errors I have seen include:• listing all the small items but forgetting

to mention your house;• appointing executors who die before you;• not dealing with the residue of the estate

eg. everything else you own which you have not already listed in your Will

The other beneficiaries can agree to Mary or your daughter inheriting and the Supreme Court can correct mistakes in wills but these are expensive alternatives to making a cor-rect Will.

Fairy Tale Wedding On Saturday, 8th of March 2014, Brad Tangye of Canowindra, son of Colin and Sharon mar-ried Sian Rowlands of Eugowra, daughter of Karen and the late Rowland – under the watchful eyes of their close friends and fam-ily. The venue of the wedding was at Eat Your Greens in Eugowra in which they catered and set the scene for a truly fairy-tale story wed-ding. Even though grey clouds loomed in the distance and thunder crackled from afar, it did not dampen the spirits of everyone as they awaited the arrival of both the bride and groom. Sian’s arrival was very Cinderella, as she arrived in a horse and carriage pulled by two beautiful white horses. As the carriage pulled away, Sian was revealed in her lavish white dress with an embellished bodice and flowing skirt. She was walked down the aisle by her brother Gethin with her dad in spirit walking by her side.

Eat Your Greens offered an array of fabu-lous canapés ranging from mini quiches to tartlets of salmon and cream cheese and su-shi. The mains were a choice between pork belly and beef with the star of the night be-ing the tasting plate of deserts! Apart from the beautiful 5 tier wedding cake, there was an array of choices for deserts including chocolate mousse, cheesecake, mini me-ringues and chocolate tarts. All guests had a fabulous time with music played by David Duke, and were kept happy by the wonderful bar staff that made sure no one went thirsty. The night ended re-spectively with the bouquet toss (caught by Hannah Gilroy) and the removal of the garter that stopped everyone in their tracks! Brad and Sian are now happily husband and wife, with that they now share a prom-ise, a lifetime and two children – all the best for the future.

In MemoriumStanley James Brown or Jim (as he was more commonly known) of Cargo sadly passed away peacefully on the 6th March. In issue 280, we looked at Jim’s life with his wife Pearl as they celebrated 64 years of marriage. Jim has welcomed 7 children and 23 grandchil-dren and 14 great grandchildren in the 64 years that he was married. Jim was a very kind hearted and genuine man, rarest of the rare to find in this world. I’m sure the people

who had the pleasure of meeting Jim would agree that he always had a smile on his face. During his life Jim worked on a farm and was a shearer. He loved his sport including AFL with his favourite team being Hawthorne. Jim also loved to watch the rugby with his favour-ite team being the Heelers (of course) and the joy he felt when they won the grand final last year, he was very proud of the team. Jim will always be in our hearts, he will never be forgotten.

Swimming Club ReportMedley Championships Results – Firstly, a request from the table officials and marshal, could a certain female Year 11 swimmer be ready in swimmers, cap and goggles by roll call so her fellow swimmers don’t have to wait on the blocks while she sprints down the pool deck. Eliza Ward and Jonty Thurgate were too fast for the Spoon semis as they improved their time by 5 and 4 seconds respectively. Ryan Ellis improved his time by 2 seconds and after some pointed comments from Jar-rod Strange, Paul Sinfield put in a big effort, dropped a second from his time so now both men have a time of 13 seconds for the 25m freestyle.

Ella Breen swam a PB of 27 seconds to take home the Spoon ahead of the fast-finishing trio of Max Wensley, Zac Giger and Stewart Russell. Well done Ella. Fifty four swimmers still had enough energy at the end of the night for the relay and it was a ding dong struggle as different lanes pulled ahead and fell behind due to the speed of the swimmers. Wade Kinsela anchored lane 6 to win over lane 4 and lane 1. Taking home the pennants with Wade were Ella Breen, Lucas Ellis, Caleb Giger, Georgie Fisher, Meg Austin, Mila Gower, Mitch Stan-ley and Jonty Thurgate. 200m freestyle is this week’s champion-ship, sign up by Wednesday afternoon and be ready for roll call at 5:45pm.
