By DAVID TELLERSPOKANE, WAStan Tourangeau of Vancouver, B.C. holds out a surging EdwinMontal and emerges undefeated from a field of 44 to win McQ’sopen 9-ball tournament, held Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday Sept.2.Tourangeau beat Montal 9-6 in a match where the winner wouldadvance to play for the driver’s seat. In the loser’s bracket, Montal, who is from Calgary, Alberta, would cruise past Tyler Edie of RedDeer, Alberta, and Phillip Tourangeau of Edmonton, Alberta.Montal jumped to a quick 3-0 lead with a break andrun and then two early 9-balls before NickKruger, the returning tournamentchampion, got a trip to thetable. Kruger, whois from

Penticton B.C. was never able to get into stroke, losing 9-3. The win gaveMontal a rematch with Stan Tourangeau in the championship match.Tourangeau got started with a 3-0 jump on Montal and extended his lead 6-3. Montal settled in and rallied back to even the score 6-6 but cooled off asTourangeau took over the tempo and coasted to a 9-7 win.The Tourangeaus replaced the Gillilands in the match of “brotherly love.”Phillip, the younger brother of Stan, lost the match 9-2. Phillip made thebest comeback performance of the tournament, winning his next sevenmatches in the loser’s bracket, finishing in fourth place in his loss to Montal. The Gillilands did not meet in thisyear’s tournament. The top U.S. finishers were JustinLilje of Portland, Oregon and PeteQuande of Helena, Montana.

A misunderstandingor an out and outflimflam, you judge. As told to me by another poolplayer. He went to a tournamentsome 175 miles away. It was astate championship but only had15 players in his division. He was on the one loss sidewaiting for a match and wasshooting on a pool table thatwasn’t being used in thetournament. Just banging ballsaround, he said, trying to loosenup for his next match. A personwalked up to him and asked, “Doyou want to shoot some pool?” Hesaid “Yes”. They didn’t lag or flip acoin for break. The other playerjust put the quarters in and rackedthe balls. He told me he went forshots that he wouldn’t normally gofor, tried to do some break outsand other shots to practice. The other player was not veryfriendly, never shook his hand orintroduced himself. This of courseis not uncommon because it’seasier to beat someone when youdon’t know them or like them.Being friendly can throw yourgame off. Having said this, thefirst pool player who thought thiswas practice was at firstsurprised when his practicingopponent said, “The match isover. I win 5-zip.” The first poolplayer said, “We weren’t playing amatch, this was practice. Nobodycalled a match, no one told me.”He went to the tournamentdirector and told him the story. Hesaid the tournament director toldhim he couldn’t change theoutcome because the other playersaid the exact opposite. Whatwould you do? How would youhave handled this situation? Andshould the tournament directortake some responsibility?Of course, the first player couldhave just got beat badly or hecould have got flimflammed. Youknow a con job. Quintuple EliminationStarts 11am

In several previous columns, I’ve urged you to gobeyond area position — that’s where you get moreor less on the right side of the next shot — tosomething closer to pin-point position. This mightbe putting the cue ball exactly on the cushion for ashot along the cushion or setting up for a perfectlystraight shot on the next ball for an easy stop shot.My main point is that if you never try for a precisespot, you areunlikely to learnhow to get there. This month’s drillhas you do stopshots and the

family of shots that are nearly stop shots. The first case is shown in Shot A. The goalis to make the object ball and leave the cueball completely motionless after it hits theobject ball. (This leaves the cue balloverlapping the ghost or phantom cue ball.)Mark the exact spot to leave the cue ballwith chalk or a paper reinforcement donutso you can see how well you did after theshot. The hard version of the drill requires you tomake the cue ball overlap the mark; theeasy version just requires you to not movethe cue ball so far that a ball could bespotted on that goal spot.Play this as a progressive drill, so that eachtime you fail to meet the shot requirements, you make the next shot a little easier, and ifyou do meet the requirements, you increasethe difficulty by moving the cue ball fartherback. For the next part of the drill, use the setup

in Shot B - that is, you want the cue ball to go forward exactly one ball froma perfect stop shot. The object ball is now farther from the pocket, both tomake the shot harder and to force you to use a little more stroke for thefollowing position shots. First, try to leave the cue ball in the position of theobject ball - that is, you want the cue ball to go forward exactly one ballfrom a perfect stop shot. Start with the cue ball close and move it backprogressively. I think the farther back the cue ball gets, the harder time youwill have with the precise placement. A firm stroke through the center of

the cue ball works very well for short shots, but as the travel to the object ball getslonger, you will need more draw.Next, try the same, but pull the cue ball backfrom the stop position by one ball diameter. This definitely needs a mark on the tableas your goal.Depending on how long your interest lasts, try two balls forward and two balls back, then three, and so on. I think you will findthat the stop shot is quite easy to do nearlyperfectly a large fraction of the time, butthe shots get much harder as the requiredmovement changes. For extra credit, put a little angle on the shotand choose a point close-by but off to theside by a ball or two. Most of the time, the table will be openenough that you can get by with sloppy play, but some of the time the cue ball has to becontrolled absolutely or you won’t have ashot. This drill will prepare you for thosesituations. In addition, if you improve to thepoint where you can put the cue ball withinan inch or two of the desired spot, you willmore often have the ideal position to get tothe next ball, and all of your shots will beeasier.

You might get bored with all the stories of 6x12 snooker tables but forsome reason I have been exposed to a dozen of them in the past year. Nottoo many people in the USA working on tables have been exposed to themand the mechanics seem to do their best to destroy them. I was asked togo to So Cal to see if I could pull a couple of them from the trash heap andbreathe life into them. The first in Chico and the second in Ventura. I like todraw the analogy that a pool table recovery on a smaller table like a 4x8 or4 1/2 x9 is like mowing your front lawn but a big Bertha is like taking care ofthe back nine on a golf course. The table in Chico had been refinished by Royce, a very talented furnituremanufacturer in the area. It was such a mess that the first pictures I saw ofit, I wondered why Jim Anderson had picked this wreck but by the time I gotto Chico the frame had become a thing of beauty and a joy to behold forever. Bob the local billiard mechanic arrived and after getting the frameleveled and the missing frame members that I had made in my shop installedthey put on the slate under my directions. Since my fingers that I fed to theJointer were not completely healed I gladly stood back as the 400# pluspieces were put in place. Since the last person to take it apart had notmarked the slate they had to do a little reshuffling but we did get a match.Terror filled my heart as I saw that each slate had carbon streaks runningthrough them, but I had brought my slate hone with me and Royce had adisc sander. We flattened the slate and filled the cracks and streaks withsuper glue so it will be good for another 5 years. We leveled and re-leveleduntil the table was on the money. It was well into the second day and myfeet were already tired from the 20 miles I walked around the monster. Thefirst rule on working on a 6x12 is always have a helper. Herb the landscapearchitect for the Condos Jim is building in Tahiti and Matt the foreman onthe project were there and my steps were shortened by 50%.60 years ago I saw my first 6x12 because Dad used me as the gofer at thePortland Labor Center so I learned at an early age what a challange theycould be. I always enjoy working on them because of the memories theybring back. Three days and the table was perfect except for the rubber. Iwas assured that the cushions were OK and had not prepared myself tofight that battle. I had to install cushions in Ventura so I was not sure I would

have enough so I was “ta-ta” for now and we shall return. We got to Ventura at 3:00 am on Saturday and the City of Ventura seniorcenter was not open on Sunday so I had the rare pleasure of a day off andwhat a place to have it. I slept in till 8:00 am and went out to the pool to workon my novel and had a chance to meet some of the nicest guys I ever met.Gary and Jack were staying at the Vagabond while they were working onthe oil fields two hills north and they called me over to the hot tub and weshared their beer. Gary invited my wife Brigid for his hillbilly barbecue thatafter noon and we spent the whole day goofing off. Before I knew it, it wasMonday and I was off to meet Tom Buchan and his oversized girl friend.Another can of worms. Birtha had been covered and new cushions installed3 years ago but it was almost impossible to play a good round of golf onher. The balls hoped a foot in the air on some rails and stopped with a thudon others. The ball rolled every direction on the playfield. The mechanicslevel showed a hilly course with the bubble disappearing on some slatesand remotely close on others. In 1918 when the table was first set up noone noticed that the braces were bowed up and the slate was never ableto flatten them. Tom and I were able to work the slate off and plane theoffenders. One was so bad that it had fractured a slate over the years. Thecushions were glued on with contact cement with the usual result (theyhad fallen off). It is impossible to work rubber that has been contacted sowe saved it for the 4x8. Much to my surprise when I came back from picking

Billy Palmer

Sept, 15 2007Mountain View, CaliforniaSaturday’s one pocket event opened with twenty-four players competing

for a total purse of $1,000. The tournament started at 1:00 pm and finishedclose to 11:00 pm. Billy Palmer to no one’s surprise took home the $400first place prize, however it was no easy task. Tough player Jeff Gregorywent through the winner’s side beating everyone including Billy to get tothe hot seat. This resulted in a tough final match between Jeff and Billy.Although Billy was the eventual winner beating Jeff 2 straight matches, each match went to the hill game.Sunday’s 9-ball event featured twenty-five of Northern California’s topplayers vying for the $1025 purse. Play began at 1:00 pm. Tony Annigonisailed through the bottom half of the bracket while Billy Palmer flew throughthe top. The hot seat was eventually went to Tony. Billy came back throughthe one loss side setting up the final match. Tony jumped out to a 4-0 leadwhen his scratch on a relatively easy 8-ball provided Billy with the break heneeded. Billy stepped up his play and took advantage of this break resultingin a 4-4 tie. However the day belonged to Tony and he took the next 2games and the tournament with a 6-4 victory. The next California Billiard Club 3rd of the month tournament will be Oct.20th-21st. Western Women’s Regional 9-Ball Tourby: Emilyn Callado3rd Stop - The Broken Rack,Emeryville, California - September22-23The Broken Rack is a favorite localhangout for pool-playingenthusiasts. Housing sixteenOlhausen tables, the third WWRstop brought in fifteen women totest the new cloth. Among the fifteenwere last year’s tour championJessie Killian and runner up (also aprevious champion) Michelle Rakin.Traditionally, the tour has alwaysheld two-day events, so even witha small field, the tournament wasstretched out to Sunday. On the winner’s side, Michelleheftily fought her way to the hot seat, having to beat Lisa D’Atri for it. Fromthe one-loss side, however, the roadwas not so easy for Mary Rakin. After a 7-6 loss to Jessie first round,Mary won her next four matchesand then lost to Helen Gaughran forfourth place. Helen was in a similarsituation, having lost to Lisa D’Atrifirst round and then winning her nextfour to meet Mary. Helen met Lisaagain on the one-loss side, but

Helen put her foot down and ownedthe match 7-0.The final match was Michelle on thewinner’s side and Helen on theloser’s. Helen pulled out someserious offensive shots andstunned on-lookers, defeatingMichelle 7-4 in the first set. Beingtrue double elimination, the twowent at it again, but Michelle started

missing some critical shots andleaving openings for Helen. In theend, Helen came out on top withanother 7-4 victory. The next WWR stop will take placeat Hard Times Billiards inSacramento, California on October13-14, 2007. Special thanks for thesupport of Broken Rack ownersWayne and Marilyn Boucher.

from: Rose Wilson & Ford (Tournament Directors)Shotze’s in Everett, WA, held its 7th Annual-Ball State ChampionshipTournament and it was a great one. Forty-nine men and eleven womenfrom Japan, Canada, Oregon, Eastern Washington and the local areascame together to put their bid in to win this very difficult tournament.Glacier’s Bowling Lane owner Larry Miller helped sponsor this tournamentby donating a $250 prize. His instructions were to find a way to give themoney to an individual in the tournament that accomplished somethingthat would be considered difficult to do. Ford and I made a decision thatany individual who won their match with a score of 5 to 0 and had two 8-ball breaks would receive this money. Neither of us really thought it wouldbe done. Half way through the first round and already three 5 to 0 scores, but no 8-ball breaks being turned in, I thought the $250 was safe. How

wrong I was. Val Alvardo, a regular in our tournaments bested Dave Williamswith a score of 5 to 0 and said he had two 8-ball breaks. I called Dave overand verified with him that it was true and then called Ford over and hadthem repeat it to Ford. Afterwards, Ford laid out $250 and we presented itto Val and I made this announcement to the rest of the players. What madethis all work is that, even though a few people knew we had the $250 fromLarry, no one but Ford and I knew what we were going to do with it. Shotze’s,Ford and I would really like to take this time to thank Larry for his contributionand we had a great time giving it away.We would also like to take this time to thank The Platis Law Firm, Billiards911, ABC Billiards, and Family Game Store & Billiards for their sponsorshipinto this year’s tournament. It’s the sponsorships like this that make it allwork for the players. Each tournament winner since the first gets his/her entry fee paid into thenext year’s 8-ball tournament. Also, our Monday Night 9-ball league winneralso gets his/her entry fee paid. Dan Louie, from last year, and Jim Conway, from Monday Night League, received their entry fees free and set out toshow every one in the tournament that it was earned.Dan Louie’s matches were Andy Ruth (5-0), Shari Ross (5-0), Zack Masiba(5-2), a loss to Damian Pongpanik (0-6), Tim Tweedell (6-3), RandyCamatigue (6-5), Jim Conway (6-2), Chris Estrada (6-0), Todd Marsh (6-5) and then into the finals against Stan Tourangeau. It had been awhile since Stan had joined us at Shotze’s for one of ourtournaments and it was great to have him back. His matches for theweekend were Josie Leroy (5-2), Chris Estrada (5-2), Jeff Jimenez (5-3),Sambo Huff (6-2), Jim Conway (6-1), Todd Marsh (6-2) and then waiting tosee who was going to try to unseat him in the finals. Our finals have been one race for all the marbles for a very long time. Thistournament was no different. Both Dan Louie and Stan Tourangeau hadwon this tournament before and once again, one of them was going to gettheir entry fee paid next year. Unfortunately, I had to leave before the 3rdplace match started and was told I missed some great action. I just hate

OnePocket is owned by Billy Palmerin this part of the country, and Billydidn’t let anyone that was inattendance get disappointed withthe results. When Billy is playing, the question is “Who’s going tofinish 2nd?”Mr. Palmer went undefeated withvictories over Roger Estelle,Patrick Rhea, Ron Lilly (7th), BartMahoney (4th) and ChrisMacDonald (3rd) for the hot seat.Chris MacDonald won his matcheson the winner’s side over RossWebber, Jermaine Lazaga, Bob B.,Tony Melindez (3rd) then lost to BillyPalmer in the hot seat match. Chrishad to face Tony Melindez again inthe finals of the one loss bracket toearn the trip to the tournament finalsagainst Billy Palmer. This carried Mr. Palmer’s streak ofJamboree tournament wins to 5 ina row. Combined wins in OnePocket and 9 Ball earned Mr.Palmer true Champion status.Congratulations Billy on yourexcellent play. The 9 ball event attracted 52 playersfrom all over northern California andWestern Nevada. Hard Timesadded $500 to the $1300 from entryfees to make the total prize fund of$1800. Not bad for a one day event.Once again Billy Palmer wentundefeated to win the hot seatmatch with wins over Jake, ChaseStaggs, Chris Cass, Gilbert Arellano

(9th), Jeff Gregory (5th) and RobertAldana (3rd) for the hot seat win.Robert Aldana got to the hot seatmatch with wins over Ricky Smiley,Bill W., JJ Cain (13th), MarshallWilliams (4th) before losing to Billy.Robert then went to the left side towait for the final one loss matchagainst the winner of the RogerEstelle and Marshall battle. Rogerwon a great Hill-Hill match and thenwent to the finals of the one lossbracket with another Hill-Hill matchagainst Robert Aldana. The finals are true doubleelimination and this meant that BillyPalmer was the odds on favorite towin his 6th straight Jamboree eventat Hard Times. Roger Estelle hadother plans for Billy. Roger won thefirst set by jumping out to a 4-1 lead.Billy fights back to tie at 4-4. Mr.Estelle then finds an open table inthe 9th rack and runs out, getting tothe hill first. Roger then breaks andruns out taking the first set.

The final set was all Roger Estelle.Roger got to the hill before Mr.Palmer won his first game. ThenRoger faced another open tablewhen Billy’s break came up dry andMr. Estelle won that game and thematch for first place and the $450prize and stopping Billy’s tight holdon the Hard Times Billiards monthlyJamborees.Saturday Sept 1stOne Pocket 28 players $840 purse1st $260 Billy Palmer2nd $175 Chris MacDonald3rd $120 Tony Melindez4th $85 Bart Mahoney5th $60 Jim Fabionar

The Diablo Valley Pool Women’s league has been running leagues since1995. We are composed or women whose only goal is to play pool and bepart of a competitive environment in preparation for a National tournamentheld in Las Vegas yearly. Not everyone chooses to go to the tournamenthowever most of us choose to be part of an organized handicapped system

which protects the new playersheavily.Last year we were contacted byLaura and Pat. They wanted to findout about our women’s league. Wewelcomed them and placed them ina team composed of new players, under the lead of one of ourexperienced players. We currentlyhave 63 women participating on asummer-fall session, in a total of 12teams.

Laura and Pat embraced the BCA rules, the tough competition from allplayers, the handicap system, the fact that they were our only seniormembers with lots of interest to learn but with limited knowledge of thegame at the time. They were part of our first pool clinictaught by our recently deceasedteacher Dave Piona. These two players are now on theirsecond season. Their experience thefirst season showed us the being aCaptain of new players takesparticular skills including lots ofpatience and willingness to guide andexplain as needed. These two players have improvedtremendously; they attended therecent Safeties clinic offered by BCA certified instructor Larry Davis. Theyunderstand the handicap system and are taking advantage of it; they arelearning the importance of safeties. More than anything they are havingfun and look forward towards each Wednesday league night, even thoughtypically they face mostly more experienced players.Cost of the Safeties clinic was $25 per player however participants onlyhad to come up with $15 as DVPL paid for the rest from its expense account.A total of four players attended this clinic. When I asked the girls their thoughts about the safety clinic this was their

response:Laura felt “he went a little fast for meand I really would have preferred moretime to practice, as a way of helpingretain what he was trying to pass on,rather than being talked at on and on, I was sorry not to have pen andpaper to take notes, and/or that hedidn’t have any handouts preparedshowing those basic calculations forbank shots, to help me/us retain whathe showed, once we’d left. Pat and I got home and found we were fairlymuddled, more than we had expected to be.”“Pat says she found it very beneficial; the instructor was easy for her to

hear and follow, and had a lot to offer. She thought his way of making abridge at the rail was particularlyuseful, and the introduction to learninghow to make bank shots, and howand why to “hide the cue ball” alsowas very enlightening.”When I asked the girls their thoughtswith regards to being part of ourwomen’s league these were theirresponse: ‘I have really enjoyed

meeting all these “strangers” and becoming acquaintances, and whoknows, maybe some will become good friends. I’ve gone from being slightlyinterested in pool — I got involved primarily because I knew Pat had alwayswanted to play more, and a women only league suited us best — tobecoming “hooked” and really enjoying the art of it.I think the league is run just swell! — from a newcomer’s point of view, I’djust really make sure newbie’s have a captain who is communicative andwarm and generous. When asked about the handicapsystem (125%): “Handicap mostlyworks; a truly perfect handicap wouldmake us all even, and as it is, the“worst” teams are generally at thebottom, so to me that means thehandicap isn’t quite high enough; butI am sure you would never get the“old-timers” to agree with more than1.25!As a final thought from Laura”: “.... think is pretty neat, about this women’sleague we’ve joined ... that you have 18 year olds to seniors (us), all joinedtogether for the love of pool ... and even some mothers and daughters ... avery supportive comminuty of players ...

Samm Diep (c) May 2007I’ve recently noticed a strange phenomenon that I

like to refer to as the “cool down” stroke. It is exactly as it sounds - the opposite of a warmup stroke. A cool down stroke is when a player’scue is still stroking after they’ve already struckthe ball and the shot is complete. In myobservations, there are two different types of cool

down strokes. The first is the classic runaway stroke. It’sas if their cue never stops moving. It’s out ofcontrol. Wait! Come back! It’s strokingbefore the hit, it strikes the ball, and itcontinues stroking afterwards. The fact thatthe player contacts the cue ball at all is just

a circumstance of one extended warm up stroke. The other one is the checking stroke. This typically occurs after a missedor poorly stroked shot. Some players have really made this a part of theirroutine. They feel an immediate need to double check what they were doing.Typically, the expression on their face reads, “Like this? No. Like that.”I suppose in this case the cool down stroke could be a good learning tool.I guess the player that uses this is checking to see if their cool down strokeis the same as the actual stroke they just used. Are they checking theiralignment? Are they simply trying to stay loose? I’m not quite sure. The biggest obstacle with the cool down stroke is that, at its truest form, just about in every instance that I’ve seen it used, it is so soon immediatelyfollowing the ball contact that the player is unable to follow through fully. They are almost lassoing their stroke back instead of delivering a fullacceleration through the cue ball.Do your strokes still count after you’ve already contacted the ball? Doeswhat you do AFTER the shot change the outcome of the already completelyshot? Stroke and keep stroking all you want, but once that ball has left yourtip there is nothing you can do to change the results.I’ve never seen Johnny Archer or Karen Corr with any extra movementafter they strike the cue ball. They are steady, concise, and deliberate, keeping the excess to a minimum. Therefore, instead of wasting the energy on stroking your cue afterwards, direct it towards all the essentials in properly executing the shot before andduring. Direct it towards your pre-shot routine, your ball address, yourstance, the contact point, your warm up strokes, and delivering a calculatedshot. These are the things that affect the outcome of the shot, not the cooldown strokes afterwards.Samm Diep, “Cherry Bomb”House Pro at Table Steaks East in Aurora, ColoradoAuthor of “You Might Be A D Player If... from: Bill BradfordThere’s a new player in Portland and he turned a few heads at the 14-1Tournament at Sam’s Billiards on September 2nd. Three weeks ago DamianRebman moved from Santa Barbara to Portland. He was delighted to hearthere is a Straight Pool Tournament in Portland, and when we saw himplay we understood why. This young man can play. He had at least 4 runsof 19 or more, marching through the field of players undefeated, ending theday with a run a 29. Buzz Poleson was the only one to score more thanhalf as many points as Damian, losing to him in the final match 50 to 28.He has a sweet stroke, a sharp eye, and excellent cue-ball control. We’llbe looking forward to watching him match up against Bob Zack, who didn’tparticipate in today’s tournament. The Labor Day weekend tournamentonly brought out 12 players, but the tournament went well.Next month’s first-Sunday-of-the-month tournament is October 7, whichis also the registration deadline for the Straight Pool League at Sam’sBilliards. The League starts October 14. The $65 registration fee covers 9weeks of free table time up to 7 PM daily. The League has a simple handicapsystem. All players with winning records finish in the money with the play-off tournament on December 15. Good MechanicsStep One

By Roger LongAdvanced Certified InstructorIn my last article I talked about certainmechanics being very helpful in themaintenance of good fundamentals, andgood fundamentals being the certainproperties than make for a good, consistent stroke. For review, I’ll identifythe “fundamentals” once again. They are:Straight Alignment, Level Cue, StayingDown, and Following Through. Now let’s take a closer look at what Imean by straight alignment. (Thediagrams below assume that the player is

right-handed, so just reverse everything if you are left-handed.)Diagram A depicts what instructional books and videos mean when theysay that alignment should be “in one plane”. This is what you shouldwant your alignment to look like if you could see yourself from an

overhead view. It showsfive points of alignment:the bridge hand, the chin(or dominant eye), theright shoulder, the rightelbow, and the right

hand. Theseshould all bealigned together. The first fourpoints shouldremain locked inplace while thegrip hand andlower arm

execute the stroke. When this alignment technique is properly employed, it will provide themost accurate shot achievable because it eliminates all except theessential body movements; the grip hand will simply be pulled straightback, and then will be pushed straightforward.Diagram B shows a back view of the lowerarm alignment. This is the arm position thatyou should use in conjunction with apendulum stroke. If you line up everything;bridge hand, chin, right shoulder, rightelbow, wrist, and hand, all in one verticalplane, all you will have to do is pull the stickstraight back, and then let it go straightforward. Nothing moves except the forearmand hand. That is the simplest way to achieve a straight stroke. It should be easy to see that if the lower part of the arm is angled intowards the body, or out away from the body, while everything else islined up and held in a vertical plane, then, during the stroke, the grip handwould have to swing in an arcing motion, causing the tip of the cue towaver from side to side.Next month we’ll look at a couple more mechanical practices that canhelp you develop better fundamentals.

By: TR OlsonOn December 6, 2006 the pool world suffered another great loss. WilliamBuffalo Goodwin born February 25, 1958 passed away after a valiant fightwith hepatitis and cancer. From1997-1999 Billy put me on the roadas a representative for his business,Buffalo Bill’s Billiards Supply. Hissupport was a God sent to astruggling pool player like myself andthanks to him I was able to experiencethings I otherwise never would have.Playing 4-20 hours a day on hisperfect Gold Crown didn’t hurt my poolgame any either. I would personallylike to make it known that pool wasmore than a business or a game toBilly, it was a passion that he lived andloved to share with anyone andeveryone. From the way he would puthis own interests aside to showsomeone how to shoot a jump shot,to the way he would stop everythingthat was going on in his world just to watch a good pool player in action. Heand I shared this love so much that when we would go to Reno or someplacelike that we would play pool a couple hours a day and watch matches up to12 hours a day. Sounds crazy, huh? Well, it wasn’t one bit crazy to himand I; it was an undying passion for the game. He truly couldn’t get enough.A passion that very few others I have met shared with me to the extent hedid. I remember one time in particular. It was a Friday night in Reno and

had gone to the all you can eat seafood buffet at the Atlantis. We were sostuffed when we came back to the Sands we supposedly had only one

intention. Going and laying in ourmotel rooms and being miserablefrom the five pounds of fresh shrimpwe had consumed, but Billy insistedwe make a stop by the poolroom tosee if there was any action, and therewas. It was Harry Platis playing RonWeisman one pocket for $2000 a set,if memory serves me correct. Afterlaying back in the bleachers for about5 or 6 hours watching the playing andbarking, I asked Billy, “so what do youthink” and he responded “I don’t thinkI’m ever gonna eat shrimp again.” Intrue Billy fashion we finally made it tothe room, be it 5 or 6 hours later. Mindyou being 5 or 6 hours late wasactually like being on time for him. That pretty much sums up Billy’s

general outlook on life. All else can wait for pool, fishing, guns, friends, family, oh and last but not least “food.”Although Billy was a very knowledgeable player and spectator when it cameto pool, he never had the chance to pursue pool the way he would of likedin his younger years. For many reasons, the most important of which werework and raising his four children: Tamara, William Jr “BJ”, Natalie, andSeth. Working to support them and himself consumed his prime years ifyou will, but he wouldn’t have had it any other way. When I asked him oncewhy he backed me in pool the way he did, he told me “that he was gettingto live his dream through me,” wow no pressure there. Again for those ofyou who didn’t know him personally you can start to get a sense of the typeof man I am talking about here. He would rather share his dreams withsomeone as opposed to follow them alone. That is exactly what he did forthe last almost ten years of his life is follow dreams, not only his, but thoseof all he came into contact with. One of the biggest dreams and dreamersthat fulfilled the end of his life was his beautiful wife Amber. They had whatmany of us long for in life, love and dreams, they didn’t just have thesethings, they shared them in every way and lived both out to the fullest extentfor the last 10 years or so. Having lost the love of my life almost two yearsago my heart bleeds for Amber as she struggles through this very difficulttime. However, I know that like my wife did for me, Billy empowered herboth alive and in spirit, enabling her to handle this situation with the utmostof grace, notice I didn’t say ease. I know that with the strength he passed

on to her she will get through this. This is yet another testament to all thathe believed in. He was above all in life a true friend and an enthusiasticteacher. A teacher of many things, not just things like pool, but a teacher oflife, love, and friendship. For those who knew Billy you can really appreciate this story and for thoseof you who didn’t I just ask you to imagine how funny this was. Billy hadbought tickets for him, Amber, and myself to go see Eric Clapton in Calgary. We took off in his beautiful SS Impala, with Amber looking stunning asalways sitting in the back seat and him and I, both cracking the scales atleast 300. For those of you who know us that is not the funny part so giveit a rest. And as always he was in full garb with long hair in pony tail, goldrings on every finger, and of course he was wearing one of his hundred orso Harley-Davidson t-shirts and black jeans. When we got to the borderand the guard started asking us questions, can’t blame him cause I myselfwould have to say we looked, well for lack of a better word, a bit Mafioso ifyou will. After the usual “where are you going” and “how long are you staying,”the guard asked Billy how much cash we had on us. He responded, “ Idon’t know $5000 give or take.” As you might guess that bought us a trip

up Brigid there was Mel Furgeson an old time player from Portland who Ihad not seen in 20 years. The work force had now Expanded to Four andwe buzzed right along and with the purchase of a belt-disc sander I wasable to figure out how to do Jim’s table in Chico.Again, we leveled and re-leveled until we got the table right. We took careof the carbon streaks and bonded the seams bringing the whole gang ofpeople out of the building. Since I am a senior a hate to comment about theover reaction of the center. They were sure that I was practicing chemicalwarfare. In 40 years of using filled polyester resins this was the first timeany one commented. We replaced the pockets with linen bags and wewere off to Chico again with a new spirit. We took the rails off, Brigid and Herb pulled the staples and with Brigid onmy case about not being able to talk and work at the same time we had therubber on for snooker matches that night. Sabrina, Jim’s wife , had prepareda fantastic dinner for a full house and patio of guests. Jim manned thelargest barbecue machine I ever saw and by 11:00 PM Brigid and I wereable to eat. We were invited to spend the night and at 5:00am we were upand ready for our next stop in Medford, but that is another story. Stay rightat this channel and I will see you next Month.

inside to answer even more questions and long story short Eric Claptonhad to go on with out us that night.Although Billy was an accomplished Chef, pool player, glass blower, fly tierand fisherman, businessman, well let’s just put it this way he wasaccomplished at whatever he put his mind to. Nowhere in those things didhe find his true sense of pride. His true pride and sense of accomplishmentcame from being a father, a lover, and a friend like no other. And just beingthese things wasn’t enough for him he liked to share and teach thesequalities to all that would listen. I know I personally took many bits of wisdomaway from my time with him and I think all that truly knew him could testifyto the same.

I have also been informed that Billy’s 19-year-old son “BJ” is a spittingimage of his dad as far as his style around the pool table. If there were onething Billy would have liked to pass on to his children it would have beenjust that, STYLE. After all he was a man of impeccable class and style.

All of Billy’s friends, family, and pool colleagues would like to inviteyou to a spectacular weekend of pool being held in his honor. There will bea $5000 added 8-ball men’s events, a $2500 added women’s event and aCalcutta and early bird tourney held November 9, 10, 11 at the 8-Ball Inn inGreat Falls, MT. The weekend will kick off on Friday the 9th with the Calcuttaand mini tourney starting at around 7 PM, followed by a full weekend ofpool. I feel truly honored to have been asked by Amber to write this articleand hope you can all attend this great weekend of pool.

Article and photos courtesy of: Dragon PromotionsChun Cheon, Korea- Jeanette Lee went undefeated to become the 2ndAnnual Empress Cup Champion. The Empress Cup drew record breakingTV ratings last year in Korea and even pushed #1 rated sport baseballback in its live broadcast. The Dragon Promotions produced event

comprised of 6 ofsome of theworld's mosttalented andbeautiful ladiesplayers in a roundrobin format. Thisyear's players wereShanelle Loraine ofGuam, IsabelleKrafczyk ofGermany, GaYoung Kim ofKorea, Yu Ram

Cha of Korea, Miyuki Sakai of Japan, and Jeanette Lee of USA. The eventwas sponsored by the city of Chun Cheon in conjunction with their annualsports festival which included competitions in skating, roller blading, bassfishing, and break dancing. The billiards event was the main attraction oncenter stage and was aired live for 4 hour broadcast on MBC ESPN,Korea's #1 network.Isabelle Krafczyk won her first international TV debut by defeating ShanelleLoraine in the first match. Next Ga Young Kim looked on her way to dominateJapan's Sakai but missed a very easy routine 9-Ball to win the match 3-0.Instead Sakai mounted a great comeback at the cost of Kim's error andwon 3-2. Next Koean Womens Champion Yu Ram Cha shut out Krafczyk3-0 and then Jeanette Lee defeated Sakai 3-1. Cha clinched her finalsberth by crushing Loraine her next match and Kim needed to defeat Lee 3-1 to force a tie breaker but could not overcome the Black Widow and lost3-1.The players were placed in two groups and the finals would pit the topfinisher in each group against each other. Lee crushed Cha in a whitewashin 2006 Empress Cup. So Cha and Lee would face each other in a re-match of last year's Empress Cup round robin match, except this time this

would be for thetitle. DespiteCha making asuperb out in thefirst game whicjincluded twodifficult bankshots, Lee wonthe first set 2-1.The second setwas won by Cha2-0 after Leemade a terrificthin cut shot onthe 9-ball only tohave the cueballgo two rails for ascratch. Lee and

Cha one set each. This would push the finals to a sudden death 1 gamematch. Cha won the lag and had an opportunity to run out but stymiedherself on the 5 ball and opted for a safety. Lee came to the table hookedbut went for a masse instead of a jump shot. She curved the cueball perfectlyto pocket the 5-Balll length of the table and then shot a nervy long straight6-ball and finished off the 7,8,and 9-ball perfectly with a concluding fistpump announcing her victory."It feels good to win a 9-Ball event here finally. It's a good start to this week'scompetitions." said Lee.Lee can now add the Empress Cup 9-Ball title alongside her Queen ofCarom and Women's Trickshot Challenge wins. In Korea Lee has nowwon in 3 disciplines in 3-Cushion, Artistic Pool, and 9-Ball.The Empress Cup was also supported by billiard industry sponsorsBrunswick Billiards and Predator Cues.

THE FINALCHINA 11 - 10 FINLAND

CHINA ARE the 2007PartyPoker.net WorldCup of Pool championsafter holding off amarvelous comebackfrom Finland at theOutland Nightclub inRotterdam. It was afantastic victory for LiHe-wen and Fu Jian-boand they can lookforward to receiving allthe plaudits when theyreturn to their homecountry.11-10 was the finalscore but at 10-6 up andbreaking for the match,a Chinese victoryseemed a certainty buta combination of nervesand some terrificFinnish heart took thegame into a thrilling finalrack.

Immonen broke and got a ball down and there was potential for Juva tomake a 1-9 combination. The deliberation took for ages as the Finnish pairof Immonen and Markus Juva sized up their options and in the end Juvatook it on but the 1 ball didn’t even connect with the 9 and it ran up table. However, it left a 1-6 combination on and China made it to regain control ofthe table. The question was whether their nerves would hold up and theyslowly inched their way towards the title. Fu Jian-bo pocketed the 9-ball tospark scenes of joyous celebration as China were the World Cup winners. The Chinese players pocket $30,000 each while Finland can consolethemselves with a $15,000 pay day each.Earlier, Fu missed a shot to win the Cup with the score at 10-8 before Lithen nervously scratched in the next when China were two shots fromglory as Finland forced only the third hill-hill match of the tournament.China had beaten South Africa, France, Philippines and Japan on theirway to the final, while Finland defeated Qatar, England, Switzerland andCanada. In the semi-final, Finland had used the soft-break and positioned the cue

ball in exactly the same position on their way to a 9-0 victory. However, this tactic was not as effective in the final as Finland, who wonthe lag, saw a dry break to give China an early opportunity. They appeared to have wasted their chance as the Finnish duo of Immonenand Juva were back at the table, although Immonen lost position goingfrom the 8-ball to the 9-ball and Juvamissed the subsequent 9-ball.China sunk the same ball for 1-0 but thenrecorded a dry break of their own, the firsttime in this tournament where there hadbeen two successive dry breaks. But theystill won the rack, thanks to a 3-9 combination from Fu Jian-bo.Amazingly, there was then another dry break from China, the third in a row.Juva failed with an attempt at the 6-ball but Fu Jian-bo then was notsuccessful with an effort at the 7-ball, the 23rd time the 7-ball had beenmissed in the tournament, and Finland made it 1-2.In the fourth, Immonen missed with his shot to kick off the rail and connectwith the 1-ball and that proved costly as China made it 3-1. It was soonback to a one-rack gap as Fu could not down the 1-ball and a long bankfrom Immonen helped it become 2-3.Finland had broke and run out five times in the semi-final and did for thefirst time in this match to tie the score at 3-3.Yet another dry break, the fourth in seven racks, brought Finland back inaction but Juva gifted the rack toChina when he scratched as thescore was now 4-3. It was levelagain after Fu produced a gaff onthe green 6.China regained the lead after acrucial miss from Juva on the 1-ball following yet another dry breakas Finland were unable toreproduce the success from thebreak they had in the semi-finals.For the first time since the earlystages of the match, Chinamoved two ahead at 6-4 beforeanother dry break in the 11th fromChina and it was 6-5.The 12th was an error-filled rackas Juva laid a tight safety and Fuwas miles away from connectingwith his desired target, butImmonen later lost position and

Article and photos courtesy of: Dragon PromotionsKwang Ju, Korea- DragonPromotions once again organizedThe 2nd Annual Women's UltimateTrickshot Challenge which hosted 6top women from around the world. This event was the first ever artisticcompetition set in Korea and one ofthe few in Asia. Last year's championJeanette Lee came back to defendher title but was facing newchallengers this year.Jeung Heung Gold Resort and Spahosted the event in its magnificentfacilities. The event was broadcastedlive on MBC ESPN for 3 hours andsponsored by the resort as well asBrunswick Billiards and PredatorCues. In Group A were Isabelle Krafczyk of Germany, Yu Ram Cha of Korea, anddefending champion Jeanette Lee of USA. Players performed a trickshotof their choice and then the other players had to duplicate the shot in 2attempts. The top two players with the best scores in the first round wouldadvance to the semi-finals. Lee succeeded with a shot shooting ball out ofthe rack with Cha and Krafcazyk failing to duplicate. Cha's shot was atiming shot but she failed to make it although Lee and Krafczk went on toduplicate. Krafczyk made her shot which consisted of a 2 bank combowhich all the players made and gave her the second seed spot and Leethe first seed to the semi-finals with a perfect 3-0 score.Group B featured Shanelle Loraine of Guam, Miyuki Sakai of Japan, andGa Young Kim of Korea. Loraine began the round with a 8-Ball push shot

Kim Wins Women's Ultimate Trickshot Challengemaking 2 stripes frozen to the cueballand 8-Ball in the middle and makingall the balls except the 8-Ball. Shesucceeded in making the shot but theother players were stymied and Kimand Sakai both failed. Kim attempteda draw masse shot but failed andnone of the other players could makeit as well. Sakai made a jump 3railkick shot and Kim succeeded andLoraine did not. This forced a 3-waytie and sudden death. Loraine madea frozen cueball/8-Ball bank shot thatagain puzzled Kim and Sakai andbecame the first to advance to semi-finals. Sakai missed her chance witha cueball off the rail first jump shotthat Kim made on her 2nd attempt to

advance. Loraine first seed and Kim second seed. The first semi-finals featured Lee vs Kim. Both players went back andforth but Kim defeated Lee with a great masse shot looping around 6 balls.Lee came close butcould not match theshot. Kim to the finals.Next underdog Lorainematched Krafczyks 5balls in one draw shoton her second attemptand beat Krafczyk witha double hit followthrough combo shot toadance to the finals. The finals pitted Kimagainst surprise finalistLoraine. Kim startedwith a one handedjump shot which shemade on her first attempt. Loraine made a great effort jumping over theball but missing. Loraine attempted a couple of low percentage tricks whileKim seemed confident in her choices. At the end Kim won the match 3-0to be crowned this year's Women's Ultimate Trickshot Champion.

the lead was back at two with it being 7-5.China ran through the next rack and at 8-5 had the biggest advantage than

at any other stage of the match. But they were still another threeaway from the title. Both sides had used soft breaksin this match but Fu opted forpower in the 14th and it seemedthe right decision as the 1-balldisappeared with a straight-forward shot on the 2-ball. Withinseconds it was 9-5 as China hadnow stamped their authority onthe match with Finland desperatefor another chance. There had only been ten drybreaks in the previous 30matches but now China producedthe sixth in only 15 racks duringthe final. Finland did the rest andit was now 6-9 to China. After another dry break, theseventh in 16 racks, thefrustration was showing as

Immonen slammed his fist down on the table after he left his partner withno shot on the 2. China moved to the hill and were now one potential shotaway from the victory. But, for the eighth time in this encounter, no balls went down on the breakshot as Finland were clinging on but the thinnest of margins.Finland were thrown a tournament lifeline as Li, aiming to make the 2 intothe right side pocket, watched in horror as the cue ball vanished into thetop left pocket. That gave Finland ball-in-hand and Juva held his nerve witha fine long-range pot the 9-ball for 10-7.The Finnish pair had been successful in the semi-final with the soft breakbut Juva now went for power and got an instant reward for three off thebreak and his team ran out in one of the fastest racks of the final for 10-8.Despite hitting the cue ball hard in the next, Finland had no luck and theninth dry break of the match came at the worst moment for the Europeans. The safety shot was not good enough and China moved through the ballsand Fu Jian-bo had an attempt to win the World Cup. He tried to roll the 9-ball down the right rail but the ball rattled in the jaws of the bottom rightpocket but did not drop.Juva showed nerves of steel by sinking the 9-ball but were China going toregret that crucial error? In a hugely dramatic final, Juva then scratched off the break to give Chinaball-in-hand and again in sight of victory. Li He-wen pocketed the 8-ball butin an unbelievable error the cue ball ended up in the right centre pocket.Juva again disposed of the 9-ball and it was hill-hill for only the third time inthe tournament. However it was not be for the Finns as Team China sealed a magnificentweek as they became PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool Champions.
