Team Cup in 1984. In 1988, Ms. Laurance wonthe International 9-Ball, the World 8-Ball and theU.S. Open Women’s 9-Ball Championships. Sheset the Women’s High Run record for StraightPool in 1988. She also won the 1991 WPBANational, the 1991 Women’s U.S. Open 9-Balland the 1994 WPA World 9-Ball Championships.Ewa received the Billiard & Bowling Institute ofAmerica (BBIA) Industry Service award andcurrently serves as President of the WPBA.I would like to thank Ewa for thisexclusive interview. I found her to bearticulate, professional, warm andpersonable.

D”C”A: You must be really excited about beinginducted into the BCA Hall of Fame.Ewa: I am.D”C”A: Where do you live now?Ewa: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I really likethe South. People are awfully laid back andfriendly down here.D”C”A: How long have you been a member ofthe WPBA?Ewa: Since 1981D”C”A: What are your plans as president forthe WPBA? Is there anything new coming up?Any changes?Ewa: We’re really excited … we’ve been workingthis whole last year. This current board has beenworking real hard to get a long-term commitmentfrom ESPN so we have something to really workwith, with our sponsors, as far as trying to takeeverything to the next level, whatever that mayturn out to be. Having a one year to one yearcontract with ESPN kind of limits you as far asthe investments you want to make, don’t knowwhat’s going to be around the bend. For us to beable to get real commitments from our sponsorswe obviously need to have a long-termcommitment from ESPN. We managed to get athree year commitment out of them and justsigned the contract about a month and a halfago. We’re very excited about that. What that allowedus to do was not only to sign long-termcommitments with our sponsors – for instanceBrunswick signed on as well for three years –but it also gave our long-term planning committeea chance to really take a look at our budget and

what we can do. One ofthe things we’re going todo – you’re going to seea little bit of a differentface of the WPBA thatwe are very excitedabout. We have investedin an actual set that isgoing to be travelingaround from event toevent. Peg Ledman andher crew will be taking itfrom tournament totournament. Instead ofhaving the Casinocarpeting, for instance,in the background of theoverhead shots, we’regoing to have our owncarpeting and stuff. Justto take it to another …D”C”A: I play leaguesas well and people arealways commentingwhen it’s on, about thecarpeting. Are you goingto have the logo onthere?Ewa: We are stillworking on all thosedetails. Peg Ledman ishandling that, it’s kind ofa wish list that she’strying to stretch thedollars as much as shecan. The problem is forevery dime we spend onproduction is moneytaken out of the prizefund essentially.Because the money weget in from sponsors is

spent on television production, event staging, prize fund for the players, programs for theregional tours that we support. So it’s all one bigpicture. It’s difficult to kind of delegate that moneyand spend it where it’s good for players. It’s goodfor the tour, good for our sponsors, that type ofthing.D”C”A: We have the NWPA women’s tour herein the Northwest …Ewa: Right, rightD”C”A: And we’re going to sponsor a WPBAevent this summer.Ewa: Fantastic! I’m so excited and so proudabout our relationship with all the regional toursaround the country because for the WPBA withthe resources we have – granted though we area professional association – we like to reach outto amateurs and to juniors to give them anopportunity to join a professional tour. But ourresources have always been limited already aswe just talked about so for these regional toursto get involved with us the way it’s worked out isphenomenal. We’re helping the regional tours, the regional tours are helping the WPBA. It reallyturned out to be a super relationship. We havereally good people throughout the whole countryworking for us.What’s great is that you can see these women –there’s some great players coming out of thesetours, absolutely, flabbergasting how many greatplayers there are throughout the whole country.D”C”A: You can almost go anywhere and findsomebody that can beat you.Ewa: Absolutely. So this is the grass rootsprogram that we dreamt of starting fifteen years

ago that is now really starting to kick in and cometo fruition completely and it has been for a fewyears. I know that Vicki Pasky back when thetour first started in ’93, the Classic Tour, was herbaby. She really wanted to have the grass rootsprogram really working, the regional tours, thequalifiers, and it’s in the middle of surpassingwhat we had hope it to be. We’re really excitedabout it.D”C”A: Are you still writing a column for Pool &Billiards?Ewa: I am and I just got done with my 4th book. Idid three books, “The Complete Idiots Guide”,the biggest book that I did – they decided to do arevision, so that’s coming out in the fall.D”C”A: Is that available on your website?

hall of fameEwa: Yes. I think it links you on to Amazon.comor to Barnes and Noble. comD”C”A: At what age did you start playing pool?Ewa: I was 14D”C”A: Who taught you?Ewa: No one in particular really. I just becameobsessed with it and it was all I wanted to do.Then just by seeing, it was kind of the “spongeeffect” really. Everybody that I ran into that knewmore about pool than I did, I asked questions, Iwatched them play. I wanted to play against themto learn. The goal when men’s and women’stournaments were together, back then the menplayed a good couple of levels above what thewomen played. So I would watch the men andconstantly learn and pick up stuff every time Iwent to a tournament or into a poolroom and thattype of thing. And then a lot of alliances, my ex-husband Jimmy Mataya, Bob Hunter, Mike Sigel, some of the people that have helped me out hereand there along the way.D”C”A: When I started out myself, I did the samething pretty much about 35 to 37 years ago waswatch other people. How did they make that cueball move? How did they get to where they got tobecause it didn’t look like it should have got therewithout the rails.Did you pattern your game after anybody?Ewa: Not really. I was always a very naturalplayer, and a natural player needs to play a lot.To be able to keep the level up, if you have anatural stroke to stroke. Now a learned player, someone who has the perfect fundamentals likean Allison or even Mike Sigel, the way that heapproaches the table, need to practice much lessbecause it is much more mechanical andautomatic. They do the same thing, veryrepetitive type strokes. So to keep their level ofplay up it doesn’t take as much as for a naturalplayer to.D”C”A: So basically you get in and out of rhythmeasier.Ewa: Exactly.D”C”A: Because I’ve noticed I’m pretty muchthe same type of player like that and if I don’tpractice a lot, my game goes off.Ewa: I used to watch Mike Sigel and Nick Varner, they used to travel together all the time becauseMike for awhile was on the Brunswick staff also, and we’ve become good friends over the yearsand I watched the two of them. Nick practices allthe time and always has. Mike would go fishingor golfing or find somebody to talk to. But he justhas more of a technical, mechanical way ofapproaching the table where Nick is a morenatural player and therefore Nick needs to playmore to keep his game up. And so when I movedto Charlotte, I started doing so many exhibitions,I’m working a lot for Brunswick, I’ve been raisingmy daughter all these years, I realized I wasn’tplaying as much as I was and then Allison movedto Charlotte and I thought maybe that’s what Ishould do. I should just get a little moremechanical approach to the table, so that way Icould still get away with not playing as much andat that point I changed my game, and that wasthe biggest mistake I think I have ever made, because then I’ve been confused ever since.D”C”A: You mentioned your daughter, what isher name?Ewa: NikkiD”C”A: Does she play?Ewa: Nikki, plays enough to where she has agood time at it. She beats most of her guy friends. She’s an aspiring professional horseback rider. She jumps horses and competes, but she’s gother mother’s genes as far as competitiveness

goes. Her trade of choice is horses as opposedto pool.D”C”A: You were mentioning that you weredoing your exhibitions for Brunswick, you’dcome out to Portland, at the Pavilion there, sponsored by Apollo Pools. Terry’s a goodguy.Ewa: Terry’s fantastic, he’s the salt of theearth, he really is. He’s become a real goodfriend as well as – we’re both obviouslyinvolved with Brunswick – but he’s just a reallygood person.D”C”A: When you practice, what was yourschedule?Ewa: Well, I think when I was playing my best, mostly I just played. I would play by myselfuntil I ran into someone who would, maybesomebody who came to the poolroom, thatwould be a good sparing partner.D”C”A: How do you practice?Ewa: You just rack or just throw the ballsout, all fifteen or nine balls and just run themoff and then when I run into a problem orsomething that I would have a hard time withI would shoot that same shot, over and overand over until it felt comfortable again. Andthen practice things like my break or jumpshot and all that. Mainly it was just throwingthe balls out there and playing, getting to thepoint where the table feels like it’s about afoot and a half by three feet in size.D”C”A: That’s nice when it feels like that.Ewa: I used to play 8-10 hours a day andnow I play nowhere near that. I’m still just ascompetitive as I was but my game is not as solidas it used to be. It’s verymuch more sporadicthan it used to be. That’shard to take.D”C”A: Do you thinkthat’s concentration?Ewa: No. I feel a big partof it is instead of playing8-10 hours a day I’mplaying 1 or 2 hours aday. I guess I don’t feelthe need to prove … Iused to feel like I neededto prove myself, I neededacceptance. I guess, with age and the fact thatI’ve won all the majortitles there are to win, Idon’t have the samehunger I used to have.D”C”A: I get that feelingsometimes myself butthen I re-energize myselffor whatever reason - Iget beat by someonethat is blind orsomething an it just kindof shakes me up, I think. How long have you beendoing play-by-play?Ewa: Oh, I’ve been doingthat on and off for years, since probably the early90’s. I used to do it wayback even in the late80’s. I would guestcommentate quite a bithere and there. Matchesweren’t broadcast on TVthat often back then. I’vebeen doing commentaryon and off since then.

Letters to the Editor:Annonymous writes:I have witnessed a problem happening with my league team that upsetsme very much. We have one player, who signed up for the team, made allkinds of promises about how excited they were to play on our team andlooked forward to the league play – and now DOESN’T SHOW UP onleague night. There has been one excuse after another, week after week.We all have families, work, illness, etc. to contend with but still do our bestto make our league night commitment. I would have to be on my deathbednot to come.I’m at a loss to how to handle this player and I wonder if this problem hashappened to other teams. I feel like this player has NO commitment to theteam, NO commitment to the league and NO commitment to pool. Whywould a player do this? If you don’t want to play, why say you will? Whatgain do you get out of signing up for the team and not showing up? EGO orwhat? It is not fair to the other members of the team who put in their time andmoney each week to qualify as a team, and the players who wait on thesidelines to substitute. The team ends up not having enough playersqualified to play in the playoffs. Each team is like family and you were asked to be on the team becauseyou were wanted. When you don’t show up you are sending the messageto the team, your family, that you don’t want them. Playing on a team is anhonor and privilege and should not be taken lightly.I would be interested in knowing if this type of thing goes on all the time.Anyone can email me back at [email protected] for listening.

Linda Carter writes:My son took me to a little tournament last night that had 17 players and Iwon it - $100 and another $25 at $5 a game. The tournament directorcame up to me after the tournament was over (before the gambling started, because I was trying to recover the $15 my son had lost gambling) andasked me not to come back because I was a pro or semipro. I have justbeen bounced for the very first time due to my skill! I am very honored!

This months Artistic Shot is from thestroke discipline and has a Degreeof Difficulty (DOD) of 8. There areno object balls in this challenge, justa dollar bill. To set up the dollar bill, place its edge even with the headcushions nose. The bill is centeredhalfway between pocket D and thefirst diamond over from pocket D,as diagrammed. The cue ball is in hand behind thecenterline, (B-E). The objective ofthis challenge is to shoot the cueball 8 or 9 cushions in diagrampattern to the dollar bill. The cue ballmust stop on or over the dollar bill. The vertical edge of the cue ballclosest to the dollar bill willdetermine success of the shot. Here are a few helpful hints on howto execute this shot. I place my cue

ball in the 1 x 1 diagram quadrantwhere the number 8 is in thediagram. If you place the cue ballas diagram you risk the chance ofhitting your hand on the table as youfollow through, You’ll need to use atleast a 10 inch bridge length so youcan execute a long fast warm upstroke. I cue the cue ball with atouch of left English and a touch ofdraw. The closer the cue ball hitsthe fifth rail by pocket E, close toscratching, the better your chancesof making the shot. If your head islow on the cue when you shoot pool, stand up more so your upper bodydoesn’t get in the way as you followthrough with this powerful stroke.Next months Artistic Shot will befrom the jump Discipline and havea DOD of 7.

Half-Ball ShotsBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

March 2004www.onthebr eaknews.comPage 8

In my January column, I described the fractionalball method of aiming in which you visualize orimagine how much of the cue ball overlaps theobject ball on its way to contact. The most usefulpart of this system is the half-ball hit, in which thecenter of the stick (and the center of the cue ball),are directed straight towards the edge of the objectball. You actually have a clear target to aim thestick at, which makes this shot unique. It turns outthat the half-ball hit has very, very importantapplications in position and safety play, which I’lldiscuss in a future column. For now, let’s work ongettingt h ebas ics h o tdown.

The spot shot shown inDiagram 1 is a good exampleto start with. The object ball ison the foot spot, and the cueball is in hand behind the line.If you place the cue ball so thatyour stick passes over theshort-rail edge of the cornerpocket, the shot is a half-ballhit. (On small tables, thecorrect placement of the cueball is closer to the sidecushion, so your stick willpass over the long-rail edge ofthe pocket.)If your cue ball placement isright, and your stick is pointedthrough the center of the cueball directly at the edge of theobject ball, and you bring yourarm straight back and straightthrough, I guarantee you’llmake the shot. (Does notapply to large cue balls, crooked tables, very stickyobject balls, or in the State ofConnecticut. Your mileage may vary.)

Diagram 1

Speaking of large cue balls, if your table is cursed with one of these, thecorrect placement will becloser to the side cushion. How much? It depends onthe cue ball — experimentwith it.As mentioned before, the cutangle for an ideal half-ball hitis 30 degrees. If the normalthrow for a rolling cue ball isincluded, it turns out to bemore like 28 degrees. Hereis how you can set up yourown half-ball practice shotanywhere on the table. SeeDiagram 2.Place the cue ball on theheadd spot. Take four ballsin a diamond pattern (like asmall nine-ball rack) andmove them forward on thetable until the 1-2 and 1-3lines point slightly above thepockets as shown. If younow remove the 1 and 4 balls, and shoot the cue ball to theprevious location of the 1, youwill be playing a half-ball hiton both the 2 and 3 at thesame time. The 1-2 line is different fromthe path of the 2 ball becausethe 2 ball is thrown slightly forward by friction from the cue ball. You can use the same small diamond to set up a half-ball shot anywhereon the table. If you want to set up a shot for the 2 ball, place the diamondso the 1-2 point to the right place if throw is included, and place the cue ballin a straight line with the 1-4, then remove the 1-3-4 and shoot the 2. Aneven faster way to set up or check shots is to make an angle template outof stiff paper. If one side is lined up with the path to the pocket, the otherwill give the required incoming path for the cue ball for a half-ball hit. When you practice shooting for half-ball, be sure to play the shot from bothsides. Some people see left and right cut shots differently.(The San Francisco Billiard Academy gives instruction at all levels frombeginning players too training Instructors through Master level. February 7th & 8th, 2004

The Fall Title Holderswas a classic recordbreaker. The morningmatches started at anormally slow tomedium pace, but by12:00pm thecompetition levelstarted to increase. With the new divisionfrom Port Orchard;Captained by RobertBaker and Rich Lee,everyone was curiousto see what their teamwould bring to the table, and soon, very soon, allwatchers would seethat the Bethel Tavernhad come to play. Theywon their division matchand their noon matchwould be played againstthe Reigning SummerTitle Holders Eli’s BigRack.

As predicted though,Eli’s would over comethe Bethel BankBurners in a very closematch and the newdivision team would

gain the experience of playing and seeing a very young, but experiencedEli’s team move into the 2nd day winners bracket. But the match just madethem raise their level ofcompetition, and theywould go on to play theQ’z division championsof the North PierceDivision to a suddendeath match. Wow,what a start for the newPort Orchard DivisionChampions. (Bring it onBank Burners – Wehave more of thatcompetition at State inMarch)!!

The NorthPierce DivisionChampions match wasalso a classic matchbetween two well-developed teams, eventhough the currentchampions, (Q’zN.A.D.S.) would fight tothe very last ball!! Thesudden death matchwould be won by thenew divisionchampions, Q’z P.I.G..Congratulations P.I.G.!!

College-bound women who relax from studying by spending time playingpool or billiards will soon have an additional scholarship resource beginningthis year.

The Northwest Womens Pool Association is establishing the scholarshipfund so the organization can award a $1,000 annual scholarship to helpNorthwest women pool players achieve their educational goals.

NWPA players are currently soliciting financial pledges for each game theywin during the third 2004 NWPA tour stop April 24-25 at The Cue Ball inSalem, OR. The players also accept one-time donations.

Each year the players will have a similar fundraiser to keep the scholarshipfund healthy to ensure long-life to the unique women’s billiard scholarship.Scholarship winners will be chosen by the NWPA board, based on theirapplications, grade point average and a required essay focused on womenand billiards. The scholarship is available to any woman entering anaccredited Northwest college or university.

tournament. The players voted to extend the races to 9 in the winners bracket, 7 in the losersbracket and 11 for the final match. Even with extended races, the tournament was completed in only14 hours of straight play. While the playfield lacked inquantity, it certainly did not lack inquality! Past McDermott Tourwinners present included StanTourangeau, Brett Seyler, andGlenn Atwell. We also saw 25players new to the tour, many ofthem local players. It was nicehaving a tournament that drew topplayers from the NW as well asbringing in some of the local talent. The low cost of the McDermottTour card was appreciated bymany of the local players notplanning on competing in otherevents.JD Doherty worked his waythrough the field, the hard way, towin the $900 first place prize. JD lost his first match to Russell Cearley (7-9) before winning ninestraight matches to take top honors. JD defeated John Campbell 7-1, Stan Tourangeau 7-5, MikeStevens 7-6, Lucas Thomas 7-3, Russell Cearley 7-2, Lee Remmers 7-4, Brett Seyler 7-4 andGlenn Atwell 7-3 before facing off against Justin Lilje. JD definitely worked hard for his money, playing virtually non-stop all day long. While those on the winners side had several breaks, those inthe losers bracket didn’t have much of a chance to catch their breath. I think that the winner of thetoughest draw had to be John Campbell who faced Glen Atwell in his first match and then JD in hissecond match.Justin looked unstoppable taking the winners side. But after defeating Tony Bloom 9-6, Ron Migues9-1, Bobby Schindler 9-3, Lee Remmers 9-1 and Glenn Atwell 9-7, he fell to JD 11-8 in the finals. The biggest surprises of the day were the quick exits from the field by Stan Tourangeau and JohnCampbell. John was out in two and Stan was out in three.Tournament results:

Pool Tournament Madness

When Chalk and Roll was in full swing,Sunday was my day to make the tables readyfor the week. It took all day to shampoo, vacuum and iron 23 tables. It was a lot of workand the tables were brushed twice daily duringthe week, but they were still dirty on Sunday.I used a great many products but Quick-Cleanwas not on the market yet. It is the quickest, most effective table cleaner I have ever seen.I thought that the two minute demonstration Idid on my first 3 or 4 trials was pretty good

for the results until I talked to David Hodges. He has been working anddeveloping his product for many years and used it in his pool hall inRichmond, Virginia. He does it in 45 seconds flat! A 66 years old fart maynever get that speed, but I do know that it is a great product! It has bothered me that some people who should be in the know have saidthat it could be harmful, both to the cloth and the finish on the rails. At onceI took a look at the contents on the back. The FDA has asked for multisyllable jargon and google speak to be printed on everything that is on themarket. The contents: Water (7732-18-5) prettydangerous stuff. Diethelene Oximide (110-91-8) aheavy loaded dose of an oxygen creating cleaner aboutas potent as toothpaste and a beer. It works by creatingextra oxygen like peroxide does only in an alcoholcarrier. Propanol (67-63-0) is used as an evaporant. Itlets the cloth dry out quicker than lightning.Butoxyehtanol (111-76-2) is used to create a film withan electrical charge to help take the chalk out of thefabric. It has the lowest toxicity of all of this type ofproduct. Polyoxyethylated Octyl Phenol (9002-93-1) isa general absorbent polymer to give the chalk theproper electrical charge to be picked up by the microfiber wiper. The alcohol was the only thing that bothered me aboutthe product because I do all the antiques made before1920 with shellac french polish method, which isdamaged easily by alcohol. I tried it on a fully curedhigh polish shellac (no harm done). I did a sample onone hour finish (no harm). Even though I did heavypuddles of the Quick-Clean, it did not phase the finish. The alcohol is the mildest form but it will move the dyein the cloth to cover missing spaces in the fabric, likethe white marks where the cue ball has burned the color off the face. Onthose spots you may not get the 45 second record. Usually you hold thecan 24” to 36” off the surface so that the foam does not form on the surface, but to get the spots off bring the can right to the surface so the oxygenatedfoam lifts the soil and moves the surrounding dye into the stripped areas. It will pick up the ball residue out of the area and move the dye into thescuff. The dirt removal properties of the product are phenomenal. My cat, Sport, who is now 21 years old has some problems. She uppied on a light beigethrow rug in the dining room last night and had done #2 where I stepped onit and put it on the same carpet. My wife noticed it this afternoon severalhours after the accident. Both yuks had dried and it seemed as though thestains were there to stay, but I got the can close and the foam lifted thematerial up and I scooped it off with a playing card and viola – stains gone!It took a full minute for both stains, not bad.I had a long conversation with David Hodges and he assured me that theproduct has been tested by both Simonis and Gorina plus many fabricmills. He uses it on the televised tournaments and even during the matches. The top pros all love it because the chalk is gone. Room owners love itbecause it extends the life of the cloth two or three times and instead ofspending 15 minutes moving the dust around, even slow people can getthe table in less than 2 minutes. The first cleaning on a dirty table will take longer because of the crud underthe rail. You may have to brush that out with a whisk broom or a vacuum ora damp cloth. From there on, that crud will no longer form. The down sideis that The Man of the Cloth will not be covering the tables as often. This isa product you must try!If you have any questions about this or any other articles in “The Break” –“From the Work Bench”, please give me a call at 503-313-8646.

Twenty-one teams hooked up for two days toshowcase their playing ability and coaching ability. Play on Saturday wentsmooth and fairly quick and the field was trimmed down to 4 teams forSunday. It was also Clay’s 40th birthdaythat weekend so he got a nice birthday present.Thank you so much to all the teams that played we hope to see you againsoon. BILLINGS, MTThe 2004 Players Open 4-man team tournament kicked off with everyonegathering at Bullwacker’s in Billing’s Montana for the Calcutta and players

meeting at about 7 pm Friday January 23.The field appeared to be a little strongerthis year. Last years champs, 4 sticks O’butta, featuring players like Jeff Boucher,TR Olson, Dan Hamper, and Jason Tigart,as well as not only 3 time past championsAlberta Crude, but also the Sore Losersteam from Calgary. Cole Dixon and PaulBrienza put up a strong team, anotherformidable team was the home town boyswith Jim Winters and Doug Medina, not tomention the team that always proves tobe strong or at least wise enough to find

there way into the money over the last 20 years or so. Of course I amreferring to another long-time, hometownfavorite team consisting of Gerry Kohm,Terry Bummer, Bob Deroek, and RyanGrimm. With over three thousand dollarsadded and $100 a team entries at stakeeveryone was anxious to get started andthe money talk was flying around the room. This kind of event is only possible becauseof our gracious sponsors for offering theirtime and establishments in order to makeit a real top-notch event. The ownershipof Bullwacker’s not only supplied us witha place to play, but some very interestingtimes at their other establishment The Wild West nightclub, where a lot ofthe players could be found while not playing. Not only is this place one hotclub, but it would offer another awesome venue for competitive pool inMontana in the future. I would especially like to notice Pete Fagenstrom

and Cassidy from the staff at the Wild Westfor making our visit there one to remember. This place makes the coyote ugly look likea church, but what a class act. Specialthanks should also be given to both VFWclubs and Charlie Browns who providedthe finals and one of the best prime ribsaround. The Sports Page also had awesomelunches and a real good pool atmosphere. Thanks to all sponsors, I can tell you fromthe player’s perspective that we all enjoyedand appreciated your efforts. And as

always a very special thanks goes out to Fritz, our man with the plan, thanks again.First round matches featured one tough half of the bracket as usual, inwhich the two Canadian teams matched up early and the winner playedlast years champs, all of this just to get tothe A-side final. After winning a nail-biterover the always tough Dave Schwartzteam, the Kohm-Bummer team earned ashot at last years champs in the A-sidefinal and proved to be ready for the task. They started off the match with some goodshooting and all the rolls and foundthemselves in a 7 to 5 lead in the race to 9match. 4 stix showed their heart and wonthe last 4 games in a row to earn the driversseat spot. Meanwhile the two Canadianteams found themselves matched upagain in the B-side final. 3 time champions Alberta Crude showed somereal speed in a quick and decisive 9 to 6 victory over Pete Sky, Russ W.,Josh, and Mark V. out of Calgary, after having lost to them 9 to 3 on Saturday. Now Alberta Crude had to Face Kohm-Bummer to earn a chance atredemption and a rematch of last years final. Jody T., Lorne K., Kim B.,and Ben R. were looking forward to that match so much that they failed to“focus, focus” as Jody would so eloquently put it and the hometown boyssurprised them with a 9 to 5 victory. The Finals pitched the hometownboys at 4 stix with the daunting task of having to defeat them twice. Thiswas not to be in a very quick well-played match by the defending champs, earning them a decisive 9 to 3 victory and made them back-to-backchampions. This is the fifth victory for the Boucher-Olson led teams, onlyadding to their impressive resumes over the last 5 or 6 years. OTB

SAN DIEGO, CAThe eighth annual Jay Swanson MemorialTournament was held at College Billiards andGaslamp Billiard Palace on January 31 -February 1, 2004. This year saw it’s largestnumber of tournament entries with a field of192 players. The field was expanded from itsoriginal 128 players when it was full a weekbefore the tournament was scheduled to begin.Day one opened at the 32 table GaslampBilliard Palace where the field would be whittleddown to the 48 players that would open thefinal day’s play at College Billiards. Thetournament was structured as a race to 9 onthe winner’s side and to 7 on the loser’s withall of the final 48 players finishing in the money.Santos Sambajon after being sent to theloser’s side had to fight his way back to playfor the win. Jerry “Baby Huey” Matchin defeatedSambajon 9-6. From there Sambajon startedhis comeback through the field. He defeatedAaron Aragon 7-2, who settled for fourth place. While that was going on Ian Costello facedMarshall Jung for the hot seat. Jung the up andcoming young player from Orange County fellto Costello 9-6.This set up the match on the loser’s sidebetween Marshall Jung and Santos Sambajon.Jung jumped out to a 2-1 lead which Sambajonsoon tied at 3-3. From here Jung and Sambajon jockeyed back and forthfor the lead with the score at 6-4, Sambajon was looking like a clear winnerbut Jung was not done yet. When Sambajon missed the 5 ball in the nextgame, Jung played safe leaving a kick shot for Sambajon. He fouled whichgave Jung ball in hand and he ran out the rack, score 6-5. Jung is within agame of Sambajon. Now it was Jung’s break, he scratched puttingSambajon in the driver’s seat with ball in hand. That was all he needed torun out and win the match 7-5.

Now the finals were set with Ian Costellofacing Santos Sambajon. The finals was asingle race to 13 and Costello jumped outto a 3-0 lead. Sambajon was having troublegetting going in the match and missed twostraight-in shots on the 8-ball but finally goton even ground at 4 all. From there thematch seem to swing in Sambajon’s favorand he easily defeated Costello 13-5.Next year ’s Jay Swanson MemorialTournament is already in the planning andwill be in January 2005 with an expandedfield.

In the closing days of 2003 we celebrated the 100th year of powered flight.Thank the Lord the Wright Brothers were great pilots for all of the attemptsto duplicate their plane and flight have failed. We might still be on the groundif they were not only great mechanics and aeronautical designers but alsogreat flyers. If you are a history buff like me, a trip to McMenamin’s CedarHills Pub is like a look backwards in time to the early days of flightdevelopment. The Pub sits on the sight of one of the most famous andbusiest private airfields in the United States, SW Cedar Hills Boulevardand Jennings Avenue.

B e r n a r dAirfield wasbuilt in 1930 byC h a r l i eBernard on apart of thefamily farm. Itwas also thehome of ab u s t l i n gaircraft designand assemblyfacility and af a v o r i t elanding spotof one of myDad’s drinkingp a r t n e r s ,“Tex” Rankin.“Tex” was oneof the mostfamous and

colorful pilots in the early day of flight, and my Dad was one of the bestknown bootleggers in the Northwest. “Tex” had learned to fly from one ofOrville Wright’s first students just after World War I and flew in the oldBarn Storming Circus’ of the twenties. Joe Sheehan learned his trade at

the Brunswick Home office, bootlegging later from Bugs Moran. “Tex” helda lot of records forcrazy stunts and wasrecognized as a WorldChampion AcrobaticAce. One of the recordshe sought was theMost Time in the Air.This required somevery specialequipment, one ofwhich as a lightweightpropeller. GeorgeRawlings, anotherdrinking buddy, gavehim that propeller. “Tex”fell short of the recordof 23 days by 20 days but that propeller hangs in the Pub thanks to Rawlings’son along with some great photos, for George was a photo finisher bytrade.Like many of Mike McMenamin’s projects things fall together in unusualways. I found an Anniversary 4 ½ x 9 pool table in Vancouver. Mike likedthe looks of that model Brunswick table so I bought it for him to match thesnooker table at the Blue Moon. Mike decided to add a Billiard Room to theCedar Hills Pub so a small change in my plans but Mike had a dream. Theroom had space for two tables and he asked me to find a matching table.Since it has been over 54 years since that model table, which celebratedthe 100th Anniversary of the Brunswick Balke Collender Co, you have abouttwo chances of finding one, slim and next to none. Mike told me to take aninventory of the tables he had in storage. First stop Edgefield where I founda 6 x 12 and 5 x 10 Snooker. Next stop Ringlers, Bingo!!! There in thebasement hiding under extra uniforms and restaurant equipment a 4 x 8 CIAnniversary Carom Table. I think it was the Keno table from the SecondAvenue Billiards, and very rare because most carom tables made in thiscentury were 5 x 10.Now playing pool on a table with no pockets would be tough, but they nowhave diamond saber saw blades so we soon had six pockets. What to doabout the castings to fit the rails. Pat Sheehan has never been known tothrow away a pool table part and my shop shows it, so low and behold fourCI pocket castings, but no side pocket castings. The CI did not have side

pocket castings so all I had to do was find a set of CI rails. Eureka! Acomplete set of 4 x 8 CI Sportsman rails that we got from Fort Lewis, some Walnut veneer on the Poplar rails – viola – Anniversay rails. I love itwhen a great plan comes together. It is fitting that the last year the CI was made was 1947, the year of “Tex’s”last flight. Dad was in K Falls covering the tables at the Waldorp and talkedto “Tex” the night before “Tex” hit the power lines at the end of KingsleyField. “Tex” had made a lot of unscheduled landings and his motto “anylanding you can walk away from is a good one” has often been quoted. This was one “Tex” didn’t walk away from. He was headed to Bernard fieldwhere McMenamin’s Pub stands. Plan to safely land on one of the barstools at the Pub and share in the history of the early days of flight, somegreat beer and a chance to play on a part of the history of pool.My thanks to Tim Hills for some of this article is plagiarized from hisvoluminous files of history. I wish I had written down my history as wellinstead of counting on my failing memory.

The Main Event at pub 181

By: Pool Writers Collective

No one could stop ‘Karate Kid’ Paul Marquez as he worked his wayundefeated through the field at The Main Event. Paul walked away richerfor his efforts at the 9-ball tournament, held Feb 7thth and 8thth at Pub 181in Gresham, Oregon. The 4rd annual event had some new facets this year. Pub 181 owner BobDonaugh presented the winner of a drawing among qualified players witha $500 travel certificate for air and lodging for two to a destination of choice.Kay Rubens, a loyal Pub 181 participant for many years, won the trip. “Itwill be Las Vegas,” she says.Co-Tournament Director Don Morse presented Andrew Monstis theTournament Director with a $100 bonus. Andrew, with 189 points, was thetop point earner for the 20-week session qualifier. Fishy… He earned itAnd who ever heard of a tournament where you were guaranteed to makemore than your entry fee? Players paid $10 to enter and were guaranteedat least $20 back.Over 110 players competed in the open qualifier over 20 weeks for the 32-spot field in the two-day finale. Because admission to the top 32 wasbased not only on performance but attendance, many top “A” players didn’tmake the final 32, and the final field was a great mix of talent.Pub 181 added approximately $1850 to the event, for a total pot of $2190.Andrew and Don pretend the payout scheme the first year when thetournament added $900. 2nd year $1700 was added. Last year $2100 Itgets bigger every year and again was a success. Many of the entrants got their first taste playing in a big tournament againsttop competition, and there were a few upsets. Rich ‘The Cheese Teaser’Adams beat out Scott the Shot Simpson and Julie Burney. Both Tom‘TheSpider’ Deirks and Ray ‘What Do You Say’ Galli were unexpectedly outearly. Some Bright spots in tourney Tim Merrill played great. Andrew Monstissays he just might start playing more now and Troy Vanwinkle played verygood only to be stopped by the Karate Kid. The most improved player overthe qualifying season Sharon MeyerTaverns and bars around the country could benefit by taking a look at Pub181’s business model. Liz and Bob’s hands-on management philosophymeans you get everything you could want in a sports bar. And, they reallyknow how to bring in and treat pool players. Every week Pub 181 putsover $400 into the pool economy for tournaments Matching pots, leagues,

Their pool tables don’t just take up space and make money. They maintain the equipment and have open tables no green fees duringpool events and 25-cent tables all other times. Pub 181 is a clean placewith good smoke eaters, the greatest bar food on the planet, and fast andfriendly service. What Pub 181 does for the pool community should not go unnoticed. It ismost admirable and puts them on the very crown of the list of elite anddesirable places to play pool anywhere in the country.Players, look forward to Participating in future pool events that are on thehorizon at Pub181!

FREEPOOL

The first tournament hosted in November 2002, showed us the adjustmentsthat needed to be made. This year we brought to the table a quietatmosphere, a private room with free practice time and newly recoveredtables. We started early and were lucky enough to see an oldie, but goodie.A match, seen many times yet never gets old, Dan Louie vs. Richie Geiler. For the Point:Richie started off with a bang! 4-0 on Dan. Richie continued to stay aheadand after many safeties and quite a few runs, it came to 8-6 Richie. Thencame Dan’s break. First shot he pushed out, but the shot was given backto him. Dan attempted a safe, but it was no match for Richie who ran therack winning the set 9-6.On the b-side, it was Randy C and Stan Tourangeau sticking it for 4th.Randy could not have played better. He started off with a break and run,and that set the mood from there, all together achieving four break andruns in the match. Eventually breaking Stan, leaving him with the cue balland a score of 9-1.For 3rd Randy C vs. Dan Louie for the second time this tournament. Thisgrueling match sent shots back and forth eventually allowing Dan to findhis rhythm an a trick up his sleeve, which may not have been the best shotof the tournament, but a definite favorite. Randy played carefully and harshlysafetied Dan. The cue ball was frozen to the rail and was nearly touchinganother ball. His object, the four, was across the table. Dan hits the cueball into the rail at an angle, sending it across the table. Knocking the fourinto the rail, it banks lengthwise to the back corner pocket, though hisprobable intention was to kick it to the closest corner. Either way, thephenomenal shot drew applause all around. After rattling Randy with theshot, Dan took the game and set 9-4.Final round - Fighting for first - True double elimination - Dan Louievs. Richie GeilerFacing each other for the second time, Dan needed to win two matchesback to back to take it all. Scratching together all his knowledge andconcentration Dan took the first match quickly, 9-2.Down to the final match it became difficult to watch as people crowded thetable to see these two smooth stroking champions make the game lookso easy. Dan starts with a 9 ball snapper. Richie takes the second. At 1-1,it looked like Richie’s set, giving Dan a taste of his own medicine with two9 ball snaps in a row leaving it 3-1. Both players took the table a few timesallowing Richie a 4-2 lead. But Richie’s lead sunk fast as Dan gained theupper hand. A few key shots by Dan along with some frustrating missesby Richie affirmed Dan’s festive 9-4 win.All in all, I could not have asked for more fans, greater players or a bettertournament. The only complaint, “Why wasn’t it bigger?”Well, you asked... So, this summer Jillian’s would like to experiment with a96 player board. If it works, our 3rd annual Open 9 Ball will utilize the entirehouse and open the field to 128 players. We invite you to join. Here’s a special thanks to all the players, spectators, Sue Carrol, GlennReckard, Richie Geiler, Jim the Mayor, Tony Humphries, Jeff Morgan andJillian’s for helping me put this highly successful tounament together. Icannot wait to see you all again. Your support is more appreciated than Icould ever show. Here is to our 3rd. Hard Times Billiards in SacramentoCalifornia Jan 3rd and 4th 2004.Jason Williams (One Pocket Event)and Billy Palmer (9 Ball Event) take1st place in the 2004 kick off MonthlyOne Pocket and 9 Ball tournamentsThe 1st of the month Saturday Onepocket event was the largest it’sbeen for almost a year. The formatis true double elimination, race to 2on winner and one-loss brackets. The finals are also ‘true’ doubleelimination. The 1st of the month Sunday 9 Balltournament just fell 10 shy of therecord 64 players.

The One Pocket Tournament:Thirty-two players paid the $20 entryfee (and $300.00 added) to matchup against the area’s best One Holeplayers. James Williams, RobertAldana, Tony Chohan, Joey Gebron,Amar Kang, Bart Mahoney, CraigOden, Mark Haddad, ChrisMcDonald and James Williamsfilled out the best field this monthlyOne Pocket tournament has seenin a long time.Jason Williams made the weekendtrip from Concord CA to test his poolskill and found this pool hall

tournament room very much to hisliking. Jason matched up againstRobert Aldana, Craig Oden and “hotseat” opponent Mark Haddad.Crowd pleasing and opponentgrimacing safeties accompaniedMr. William’s aggressive attack onthe table.During the “Hot Seat” match againstMark Haddad, Jason made a combothat normally good players wouldpass up. The balls were positionedsuch that they were both back cuts.Cue ball back cut into 1st ball tocombo back cut into object ball. Therisk for missing would normally stopany good player from taking theshot. To make this even more risky, very make-able balls surroundedMark Haddad’s pocket. When Mr.Williams shot the combo (and madeit) the cue ball rolled over to thecluster of balls by Mark’s pocket, for‘easy pickens’ for the OUT and WIN.Tony Chohan was waiting on theOne Loss side to avenge anearlier loss to Mark Haddad. Thematch turned out to be a contestof ‘who could take the wildestshots’. Back cuts from mid table,2 and 3 rail shots were dropping,in the pack and bank comboswere also dropping. The crowdwas too amazed to applause; theyjust sat there, wondering if what

they had justseen was reallyhappening.Tony Chohansqueaked outthe win overMark and wasdetermined toshow JasonWilliams whowas the betterplayer. Tonyquickly won thefirst two gamesin the race to 2 ofthe first set of thefinals. Thismatch only tookabout 20minutes and thescores were 8-0and 8-1. Thesecond matchtook just a little longer. Tony Chohanwon the first game off Jason’sbreak, with an 8-1 win. Jason tookthe second game 8-6 after a crucialmiss by Mr. Chohan in an attemptto close the match out, with a verydifficult back cut for the 7th ball. Inthe final game for the tournament,Tony broke and left Jason tough. The balls were spread between theback of the back and Tony’s pocket.

Jason played asweet double caromof the cue ball off twoballs to leave the cueball in the jaws of hispocket. Tony’sattempt to repositionthe cue ball failed byjust a smidgeon andthis was just enoughroom for Jason towork his magic. Thenext 7 shots were

relatively easy compared to the lastone for the tournament. The one ballwas at least 2 and half diamondsaway from Jason’s pocket and onTony’s side of the table and the cueball in the middle of the table. Jasonstudied the shot for almost 2minutes (that’s a long time forJason) and fired the cue ball. TheOne ball drifted the pocket at exactlypocket speed, dropping into thepocket with its last bit of roll.32 players at $20 each +$300added1st $300 Jason Williams2nd $200 Tony Chohan3rd $150 Mark Haddad4th $100 Joey Gebron5/6 $80 Craig Oden,

The 9 Ball Tournament:Jason William’s attempt tocomplete the sweep of both OnePocket and 9 ball tournaments wasstopped by the California Bay Areachampion Billy Palmer. Less than24 hours after Jason Williams wonthe One Pocket event, he set out tomake it two in a row.Jason played with cue ball controland deadly accuracy and took him

through thewinners side witheasy wins overAmar Kang (6-1),Chong Vang (6-4),Roger Estelle (6-2)and Bart Mahoney(6-4) beforemeeting BillyPalmer for the “HotSeat” and losing ahill match that sentJason to the OneLoss side.Billy Palmer hadthe more difficultbracket on thewinner’s side. Billyhad some greatmatches playingery strong localplayers like BrianLaw (6-5), Art

Valenza (6-0), Robert Aldana (6-2),Joey Gebron (6-4) and ChrisMcDonald (6-3) before meetingJason Williams for the “Hot Seat”match. Many of the previous day’s OnePocket “players” showed up for thismonthly event. Amar Kang, JoeyGebron, Jason Williams, BartMahoney, Craig Oden, ChrisMcDonald, Ralph Daloian, JamesWilliams and Robert Aldana werepast winners of this event and stillcapable of a first place finish. The Finals of the 9 Ball tournamentstarted with a “9 on the Snap” by

Billy Palmer. This opener set thetone for the match. Billy was incommand, made some great run-outs and went up 3-1 in the first fourgames. Jason looked somewhatdiscouraged, from what may havebeen the culmination of a very longweekend. Both players had somegreat run outs. Jason made just afew mistakes but got lucky on theleaves. The misses for both playersdidn’t leave open shots and causedlong safety battles for the remaininggames. Jason couldn’t recoverfrom the misses and never gotcloser than 4-2. D”C”A: I met you and Mitch when I was outthere at Lincoln City. What did you think of theNorthwest and the Pacific Ocean?Ewa: We love it! We went fishing while we werethere actually with Terry. We caught a 38 and 40pounder Salmon, and we had the time of our life.We actually were talking about making a golf tripout there when the weather was a little warmer. And we were talking to Terry about how great itwould be to have a place out there somewherein the mountains. We really like the outdoors bothMitch and I. We both love to play golf and it doesn’tget any prettier than the Northwest. It is the mostbreathtaking place. I’ve never been up toWashington. I hear about all the nature and thewoods, everything up in that area. I’ve never beento Montana. We’ve been talking about when we

go out to tournaments and stuff – we actuallystay and see something.D”C”A: What kind of cue do you use?Ewa: Bob Hunter’s Cue – Hunter Cue.Bob’s originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan andBob’s a World Champion Straight Pool player. He kind of went the same way Sigel did, hemakes cues, he lives in Nevada. I think CarsonCity.D”C”A: Do you have a favorite place to play,Myrtle Beach or do you go somewhere else?Ewa: Actually there’s no real poolroom here thatI go to. I play at home. I have a BrunswickMontebello in my house where I made a reallynice poolroom, so that’s where I usually play.Every once in a while I go up to Wilmington, there’s a poolroom up there but its kind of toughto stay sharp because I don’t have anyone tospar with. I’ll be playing on my table at home andI’ll be playing great and all of a sudden I get to atournament and there’s an actual opponent firingback at me. It makes it a little tougher.D”C”A: Do you do have any charities?Ewa: Make A Wish Foundation is my maincharity, but also the Cancer ResearchFoundation. My husband had prostate cancer 2years ago, so that one hit closer to home thanyou ever expect or want it to. Those are my twomain charities and I’m really involved with theMake A Wish Foundation.D”C”A: Both in the ranks of professional andamateur players there has been in the past 20 to25 years a tremendous growth in pool, what doyou contribute that to?Ewa: I give the WPBA an amazing amount ofcredit because I think sports and recreation isoverall very cyclical. It kind of comes and goes,it becomes the in thing to do then it kind ofdisappears. Right now poker is all the rage.Poker’s been around forever but if you look 5

Ewa Interviewcontinued from page 5

years ago and 5 years from now, there’s a goodchance poker may or may not be the rage.I think that the WPBA has managed to keepconsistently on television – Yes, we’re short ona lot of things. We need regular time slots. Weneed ESPN to help promote us instead of puttingit on when it’s convenient. I don’t mind the rerunsbeing on whenever, but the original program, thefirst time it’s shown, we need to be able to builda fan base and give our fans a chance to followand to build on that. So there’s a lot of thingsmissing but I think the fact that we’re staying outthere, we’re showing a really professional face. What a great family sport it is. What a greatintelligent sport it is. It’s a sexy sport. It’s all theway around, it doesn’t matter what walk of lifeyou’re in it’s just a great game for everybody. I

think that that’s one of the things, men’s sportshave always been great, but women’s pool hasreally brought a lot of that attention to it.D”C”A: What about on the amateur level?Ewa: I think the amateur level too. I think thatfeeds it. First of all the serious amateur, especiallyon the women’s side but even on the men’s sidehas really seen an opportunity so that there’sactually the next level to go to. In pool out therethe professional tour, is growing by leaps andbounds so there’s someplace to go – there’ssomething. That if you’re an aspiring professionalthen there’s someplace to go now, which therenever was in the past. I also think that the APA,the BCA, the Valley league – the N-P-B-A – whatis it? N-B – I’m alphabet soup here …D”C”A: There’s the VNEA, BCA, there’s TAP,there’s APA …Ewa: Right, all those leagues are all doing theirpart of promoting the game. Yeah, most of themare businesses and that’s wonderful and I hopethey do really well, but the main thing is that asthey’re doing their business, it’s promoting poolall over the place. And also BCA’s program withthe juniors. There are so many girls now thatcome to our tournaments and say “I’ve beenwatching you on TV” or “I’ve always dreamed ofbeing a professional player.” How many , otherthan if Daddy owns a poolroom, how many 12year old girls have even thought about pool before. So it’s all, everybody is doing their part.Everybody’s bringing it together and this is whatI’ve always dreamed of, is that the industry wouldactually come together. The proprietors, thedealers, the manufacturers, the players and worktowards common goals. And try to fight againstother sports to get our recognition as opposedto be fighting against each other, which isludicrous. Because as we’re fighting against

Let’s see if you can hold on to that traveling trophyfor another session??

P.I.G. would receive a bye in the 2nd round andgo on to play the Sunrise Division Champions(Burning Felt) at 10:0am on Sunday morning.Another close match, but the Sunrise Championswould show Q’z P.I.G. why they were able to set aDivision Session record 87 points in a sixteenweek session.

The final would come down to two verydeserving and tight nit teams. But in the end itwas alertness, skill and one thing that always

makes the difference in a big match,(EXPERIENCE).

James Schwieger and Nate Stevens(M.V.P) would show the crowd what it takes tokeep their team on the edge and how to edge thewinning matches!! Congratulations! Eli’sRoadhouse- Big Rack- you accomplished whatno other team has been able to do in the last fouryears!!

Thank You All for a Great and Smooth Tournament,Gary Smith

each other – other sports out there are taking our TV time. They’re taking our sponsorship dollars. They’re taking our opportunity because we’re too busy bickering amongst ourselves. I think that thathas to change and it’s still changing and it’s really neat to see.D”C”A: There has been a lot of Asian players come in, in the past few years and them seem to bemaking a lot of noise, great players, what do you think?Ewa: Well, I think it’s fantastic. This really shows that not only are we doing our stuff here but thingsare happening all over the world as far as pool goes. Asia has really taken off. I mean it’s always beenbig in the Philippines and Japan. When we were over in Japan, in the early to mid 80’s and especiallyright after the late 80’s when the “Color of Money” hit, it went crazy in Japan. Every block had apoolroom on it all of a sudden. Loree Jon Jones, myself, Vicki Pasky, Robin Bell, Robin Dodson, some of us, we were over there playing tournaments in the mid to late 80’s. But then it’s really grown.China’s where it’s really become popular, Taiwan, Europe, Australia. It’s really grown at a tremendouspace, first of all there’s a big pool of people over there and that’s part of it. They’re taking it veryseriously. So for instance when Allison Fisher or Karen Corr learned how to play snooker, it wasn’tjust in a poolroom somewhere or watching somebody. There’s professionals that actually teachfundamentals over there. In Asia, there’s people like Jennifer Chen or Ga Young Kim, who work withcoaches that are billiards trainers and that professionalism is something that we are behind on herein the United States. That’s something we are finally starting to figure out with all these nice billiardrooms now. You should be able to go to a poolroom and find a professional that you can work with inevery single poolroom, no different than at a golf course.Women have been lagging behind and in Asia, they went up, that’s automatic and they jumpedahead of us. So girls like Ga Young Kim now are learning from, how to hold a cue stick correctly. Notby trial and error and wasting three years but having some body help her right from the start teachingher both mental toughness and the physical aspects of the game and how to think the game. I thinkthat is really showing up in how good both the men’s and women’s side, how good these playersreally are.It makes no sense if you don’t get instructions, because that’s like saying that Tiger Woods sucksbecause he actually goes to a tournament and gets a lesson once in a while.D”C”A: Tiger, the best golfer in the world gets training – so why shouldn’t we or you or me.Ewa: Exactly. It’s no different than – the minute we stop growing you’re doneD”C”A: Yes, you stop learning, and it’s over.Do you have anything to add?Ewa: I’m forever, forever, forever grateful to Brunswick Billiards who back in the late 80’s, before Iwas ranked #9 or whatever I put up, to sign me on and let me actually have this as my profession andsupport my daughter. I am forever grateful to my husband, Mitch, for supporting me, and helping meout and my daughter for being patient and understanding when Mom has to go out of town. And to theWPBA, all the women that have been so instrumental in taking this sport to where it is now. Wealways had the dream that someday we’d actually make a living playing pool. And it’s happening! There’s aspiring pros coming up now. It may not be in my lifetime but it may be shortly thereafter orat least not in my career, that men or women players can actually, the top 20, the top 30, make agood living from playing on the tour.
