Lacey, WAThe venture has begun and was celebrated with a Grand re-Openingparty. Dick Megiveron and Deby and Rob Welfringer kicked off theirpurchase of the The Viking on Sept. 7th. If youve never been to theViking now is the time. Its located in Lacey WA right on Martin Way. Wehave a full bar, full kitchen and two 1945 Brunswick 4-1/2 x 9 foot tables. We have adancing and wesing KaraokeThursday, Fridayand Saturdayevenings. So,how was theparty? It was a hugesuccess and wewant to thank allof you whoattended. Thingsstarted gearingup about 3:00pm.By 4:00pm thefood was beingserved. We had over 120lbs of BBQ Chicken and Ribs with A gratinpotatoes, pasta salad, potato salad and corn on the cob. Special thanksto those who contributed: Patti Conn, Debi Nelson, Tony Lomsdale andPat Tarver with Jay Farmer manning the BBQ. We had plenty of yummyfood for all.Once our bellies were full the invitational karaoke singers began theirperformance. They were incredible. Special thanks to Megan Torve forputting together a group of such talented performers who included: Pattiand Rich March, Jack, Barb Murphey and husband Murphey, JackieSawyer, Leah, Larry, Bill Valentine and Mr. Rock and Roll.We were able to get in two 9-ball pool tournaments. I think the best partwas Al Hess who wore his Viking horn hat while competing in thetournament. He took this very serious. It was a classic moment.

The results were:

First tournament1st Terry Lugwick2nd Ted Woodward3rd Lou Sorrous4th Mike O.5/6th Chuck Moyer and Al Hess

Second Tournament1st Rich Duffey2nd Ron Schraeder3rd Al Hess4th Ted Woodward5/6th Mike O.

After the food was served the invitational karaoke singers gave theirperformance and the good times really started to roll. The atmospherewas awesome and we all had such a great time. It was elbow-to-elbowand standing room only. At 9:00pm it was open karaoke and the placewas singing in style. We had Debi Nelson and Keith Mulligan bartendingand Chrissy Gray, Tracey Delaney and Lacey Miner serving the guests. Idont how they did it, but they somehow managed to work their way throughthe elbows. Thanks for the great service you guys. We gave away manydoor prizes and broke out the Viking hats. We didnt realize having differentsized horns on the Viking hats would create so much horn envy betweenthe guests and everyone was definitely horny that night. The place partieduntil closing and was more than we could have hoped for. We would liketo thank all our patrons who endured the remodel with such patience. We are grateful to have such a group of wonderful people in our bar. Please check in frequently. We will be having many new events everyweek including: pool tournaments, BBQs, NFL football specials, karaokecontests, lunch and dinner specials and other fun events. We will behaving charity events starting in Oct. including: a coat drive, food driveand a toy drive. If you would like to donate we will be happy to pass italong. Our web site will launch Oct. 10th. Check out our special eventcalendar and get on our e-mail announcement list.

About the AuthorDean Shane Cassem

Born in Charleston, W.Va. to an immigrant father fromLebanon, Dean Shane Cassem picked up his first cue stickat age 15. His father and grandfather before him hadCassems restaurant in Kanawha City, a suburb ofCharleston, which is the state capitol of West Virginia. Fromage 15 to age 20, except for a short stint in Viet Namn,Shane hardly put his cue down and by age 20, had placedsecond in the annual Virginia straight pool tourney (1966).In his twenties, his game went stale from staying in the barsand out of the rooms where stiffer competition would havehoned his game. His stroke subsided completely until hismid thirties when he resurrected his game and won the Coorsstatewide Texas 8-ball Championship in Houston in 1981.Directing his energies to a new wife, his church, and an

interior wall and floor-covering business in the mid to late 80s, his game went dormantagain until he sold his business and returned to school. At age 48, he completed hisundergraduate work in theology, and earned Masters degrees in Marriage & FamilyCounseling and Christian Education. During that time, he developed his writing skillsand has since become the most prolific writer of pocket billiard fiction in America. Shanehas five Carter Keating novels nearly ready for publication: Breakthrough, Resurrection,Backrooms, Twist of Fate and Trade-off. Readers will see Twist of Fate in the bookstoresby November 2002. In addition, he has recently created two new characters; SkinnyMalone and Kelsey Maynard. Currently, Shane also has a Marriage and Family Counselingpractice. He and Mary, his wife of fifteen years, live in Fort Worth, the setting for hisongoing Carter Keating Series. Shane has one daughter, Vickie Linn, a son-n-law, Brian, and a precious granddaughter, Shelbie Linn. You may visit Shanes web sites at;www.carterkeatingnovels.com or creativecounselingconcepts.com

BREAKTHROUGHA Short Story by: Dean Shane Cassem

PART 4In Part One, New friend Dave Wakefield introduces young CarterKeating to pocket billiards for the first time. Keating watches captivelyas Wakefield and Jimmy The Stick Gadwell play nine ball in WilliesPool Palace. Part One ends as Gadwell completes a spectacularnine ball session with Wakefield, smirks cockily as Wakefield stompsoff, then pulls up a chair next to young Keating for a chat. In PartTwo, Wakefield and Tools Spinard challenge Gadwell and youngKeating to an eight-ball match. Keating agrees, fails to make a shotthe entire time, and faces the ridicule of Spinard, Wakefield, Gadwelland the other patrons in Willies Pool Palace. Young Keating swearsthat he will learn to play the game, and play it well. Part III describesyoung Keatings rapid development as a player and, his introductionto Charley Sturgis, an old and wise mentor, who guides him tomaturity, both as a pool player and as an individual.

A HARD PULSATING RAIN FELL PROFUSELY from a black, moonlesssky. On the radio, the weatherman blared that the roads would be icedby morning. I parked in Willies back lot, threw up my collar and ranaround to the front entrance. Thirty minutes before I had been at thePub, the downtown pool parlor where Jack, the Hammer, Dunbaum hadbeen playing an all day match with Peppy Rodriquez, a road hustler infrom the West Coast. Rodriquez, impetuous and hot-headed and in hislate twenties, had given the Hammer a good run for his money, but finallygave up after dumping a couple of large bills.

Before that Id engaged in a match of my own and completed ahigh run of ninety-five, beating Columbus Bruce, the owner in a straightpool race to one-fifty. Never before had I run more than seventy-five.

As I turned the corner and scaled the steps, I looked throughthe large glass windows and saw a packed house inside. The ThinMan and Cigar Cartier were playing on table three.

Once inside, I stomped to the bar and cut a sharp right to thepool room side of the restaurant. Dave Wakefield shot up to me rightaway. Bout some nine ball, Keating, he baited.

Nod.Rackem on table five, Eddy! He yelled.Eddy Cooksey glanced up then came over and racked the

balls. He looked at me and gave me a thumbs up.Breakem, I said confidently, eyeing Dave Wakefield.Wakefield gestured smugly then stepped to the table and threw

a full-wristed arm-extending break at the rack. A loud, reverberatingcrack sounded across the room as all nine balls splattered in everydirection. Before they stopped, the two, three, and eight settled intothe black depths of the pockets. Only six colored object ballsremained.

Wakefield smiled cockily, punched in the one ball, drew back onthe three, then settled in and ran the rack.

In the second game, on the break he rolled the nine in the leftcorner pocket for an immediate winner. Suddenly he led two games tonone.

I looked at Charley Sturgis and nodded. He knew . . . I knew Idmade a foolish mistake by giving Wakefield the break. Now Id haveto pay the price.

Open the Gate ShotHere is a trick shot that is a little tricky to set up. The first two balls to setup are balls X and B. Ball X, as diagramed, is to the right of the foot spotand slightly below it. Ball B is froze to ball X and the line of centers of thetwo balls follow the dotted line. Next start your semi-circle on nine ballsstarting with ball A. The distance between balls A and B is one ball. Makesure all balls are touching in the semi-circle of balls. Hit the cue ball with

low left English using ahard stroke. Hit onethird of ball A so thatthe cue ball caroms toball B. Ball X will thentravel along the solidblack line for the cornerpocket.

You can fix most slates. How depends on the type of crack. You willbe working with either super glue or bondo and you will have towork fast. These products need to be used in a well-ventilated areaas well. Also, any jagged pieces of slate can be very sharp. Take

my word on it! Be careful not to cut yourself. For this, I am assuming that you have a single piece slate or unbacked threepiece.1. If the crack is not all the way through the slate, simply ooze some type ofsuper glue (liquid, not gel) down into the crack until it is completely filled and letit set. Use a razor blade or sand paper to remove any residue.2. If the crack has gone all the way through and you actually have more than onepiece you will have to get the slate on a flat surface. I have the luxury of puttingit on top of another slate. Put wax paper under the area to be glued. Set the slatepieces tight together and ooze the super glue down the crack as above. Makesure they are as tight as they can go and use a pipe clamp to hold them togetherif you can. Remove residue as above.3. If the crack is angled through the slate somewhat horizontally, you want toreally make sure the whole area is covered with glue. Let it seep in good andthen put some kind of weight on it from above.4. If you actually have chunks or small pieces that have come off the top of theslate you can glue these into place if they have clean edges. If they dont, or thepieces are missing it is time to get some bondo, the kind you fix car bodies with.Use the bondo according to directions and work fast. Fill in the missing areasand let dry. Sand to smooth. If you have a three-piece slate with or without wood backing you are probablygoing to need the help of a reliable tech in your area. The slates will have to bere-leveled and set and that is something you should have done by a professional.A wood backed slate may have other potential problems that would be difficult togo into here. You should call your tech anyway if you dont think you can handlethe problem. Slate is expensive to replace but it can be fixed fairly easily if ithasnt completely shattered. See ad page 9

competitors shooting both events. That kept me and some players very busygoing from one event to the other. The 8-ball tournament saw Stan Tourangeau meet up with Bernie Mikkelsenin the winners final. Stan moved through the lower half of the board with winsover Darin Walding 5-2, John Duclos 5-3, Wayne Boyd 5-2, and Jim Ward 5-2. In the match with Jim Ward, I did something I have never done before. Wehappened to be taping the match and the question of a foul came up. Jim wasshooting over an object ball, and on the stroke, Stan called a foul and Jimdisagreed. After some discussion with me, and receiving conflicting informationI went to the video booth for review. Upon further review, it was a foul. On thebackstroke of Jims shot he rolled the 5-ball away from the cue ball, doing thathe hit the cue ball where he would not have been able to. Ball in hand to Stan.Meanwhile, the top half of the board was being dominated by Bernie Mikkelsen. With a first round win over Oliver Acosta 5-4, he went on to defeat ScottChandler 5-4, Jerry Van Scharrel 5-2 and Merv White 5-4. In The winnersfinal Bernie won 5-2 and sent Stan to the b-side. Stan beat Mike Zimmerman5-4 to set up a rematch with Bernie. At that point Stan was unstoppable winningboth sets 5-2 and 5-0 to claim the first place prize.Moving on to the 9-ball event, I was a little disappointed by the lack ofparticipation. Getting a full fieldof 96 players last year we onlyhad 55 players this year. Withthe potential of over $4,000added to the 9-ball tournamentand getting 55 people to playdoesnt make me very excitedfor next year. Some of thisblame I put on myself. For thefirst time I imposed a late fee.My incentive was to getplayers to sign up early, but itbackfired. I waved the late feea week before the event butdidnt get many late sign upsso its the last time Ill try that. Ialso put some blame on mylocal players. Out of 55 playersonly 7 were local, that numberis discouraging to me sincethey only need to pay an entryfee. No hotel room to pay, nogas money to pay and its notlike they didnt know it was going to happen. Its been happening for 7 yearsnow. So I hope to see that number improve next year. One thing that was nice about the short field, I was able to give hard starttimes to the players. Usually I am forced to run continuous play and I can onlyestimate so that was nice. I was also able to cut things off early both nightsand we didnt have to play really late either. But when the play was going on itwas very fun to watch. There were a lot of upsets but the biggest upset didntquite happen. Rafael Martinez shooting on the b-side due to an early upset atthe hands of John Duclos, found himself down to Todd Ruhlen 8-3. Todd hada few shots to knock him out but didnt get there and lost a heart breaker.Todd shouldnt hang his head too low though he was one shot away frombeating a world champion. Rafaels early loss opened the door to the rest ofthe field. John Duclos the former Alaska state Champion 14-1 player movedinto the winners final. With hill-hill wins in his first 2 matches over Mike Masseyand Damien Rebman he then went on to defeat Rafael Martinez 9-6, LoyLong 9-4 and Kris Iverson 9-6 to earn a spot in the winners final. Glenn Atwellwas our other participant in the winners final. Glenn opened with a win overDan Louie 9-3 and went on the defeat Brice Avilia 9-5, Oliver Acosta 9-6, JimWard 9-3 and Stan Tourangeau 9-7 before losing to John 7-9 for the hammer.Moving over to the b-side he ran into a train. The conductors name wasRafael and he was stopping for no one. After his loss to John and then thescare by Todd, Rafael hit his groove. He went on to defeat Brice Avilia 9-0, TJ Frank 9-5, Tim Tweedell 9-5, Kris Iverson 9-1, Dwayne Bjornstad 9-3 andGlen Atwell 9-3 to play in the finals with John. The first set went fast andRafael handed John a 9-1 loss to even things up. The second set was closerby the score and once again, I had to deal with customer issues so I misseda lot of the final match that put Rafael on top 9-6. In doing so he also stoppedthe streak the Canadians had at 6 wins in a row.At this time I would like to thank all the sponsors that helped make this eventhappen. Grahams Family Recreation, Aces Casino, Budweiser, NorthernQuest Casino, Jim Beam, Super 8 Motel, Bacardi, Moonlight Entertainment,Tuxedo Gallery, Lady Luck Tattoo, Kokanee, On the Wire, Gripper BilliardProducts and Appleway Automotive. I want to thank Nita Saddler for all herhelp with the boards. Cristie Reitz for cleaning up the tables and balls atnight. All of my wait staff for taking care of all the players needs. Mike Yost ourG.M. for all his technical support. And Jerry Fouts and Gary Early, the ownersof McQs for allowing me do direct these events. Big Game SeasonOctober transition month. Hunters with weapons and gear

hitting the woods; other hunters, with their weaponsand gear, hitting the pool halls. October is a huge

month for tourneys. Coming off the hot days, through the dream days of Indian Summer andinto tournament/money season is like jumping intothe Gorge at runoff! Cues become compass andsatellites guiding us through the rush and thrash

of the season, as we each hunt the Boone &Crockett trophy among the herds of wild wins.

We, too, wear camo for our hunt; sneaky petes, buck calls (wannaplay for a few bucks?) and bear bait complete the outfit.Another striking similarity is the amount of alcohol many non-serious hunters and many poolplayers consume, prior to and duringtheir outings. Years ago, I lived deep in the mountains of theIdaho panhandle where some out-of-staters chose to hunt.Opening day was about mid-point in their binge and the onlygame they got was one of their own, who fortunately livedthrough the experience. Happily, the partying gameroom has alot more hunting allure for poolplayers than those pilgrim-populated mountains held for true, native hunters and woodsworkers on opening day!!So, off we go in the annual pursuit of Big Games. They migratethrough the seasons like caribou over Alaskan tundra; alwaysaround, just more numerous at times & in places. As in huntingthe 4-leggeds, the awareness is always present that a biggerone is still out there. For each of us, the Big One has its owndefinition and parameter. All that really matters, in the longrun, is that we know the face of our goal, even as it changes, andthat we remain in the hunt as long as it gives us enough of thatwhich we pursue.Happy Hunting!Mary Price, huntress

Emeryville - September 14 and 15, 2002.

The turnout was excellent with 40 players joining. Top

four women that weekend were Michelle Rakin, Eleanor

Callado, Lisa DAtri and Helen Gaughran.

In the semi-finals, Michelle Rakin and Lisa DAtri were

set up to play for the hot seat. After a hectic and

electrifying match, displaying tons of competitiveness

and skill, both women reached the hill. Then, Michelle

took the win away from Lisa, bringing Lisa to the

losers and awaiting the winner of Eleanor

Callado and Helen Gaughran.

Eleanor had to play Helen (for the second time.

The first came from the winners with a defeat

for Eleanor, 3-7) and both players were

missing shots that they normally would

have nailed during practice. But

Eleanor managed to get a slight

edge over Helen. The final score

was 7-3; Eleanor moved up and

Helen received fourth.

It had to come to this: Lisa DAtri

and Eleanor Callado, two good

friends, playing each other for the chance to go at

Michelle. There were some surprising upsets and

mistakes, but these two were playing their hearts out.

The win went to Eleanor at a very close 7-5, as Lisa

took a very respectable third.

The finals had close friends, Michelle Rakin and Eleanor

Callado, going at it for the win. This match didnt last

very long; Michelle was shooting very strong and

Eleanor barely got her chance at the table. This match

ended with a score of 7-2, a well-earned undefeated

win for the third stop by Michelle Rakin as well as a

good effort from Eleanor.

The second-chance tournament brought back 18

players for the opportunity to earn more money. The

semi-finals had matches between Julie Hunter and

Shawna Anderson, and, Revelina Morales and Jessie

Killian. The finals were definitely something to see:

Western Regional held their third stop at the Broken RackThe 2002 Womens

Revelina and Julie defeated four women each before

facing off for first place. Both highly skilled, the match

displayed a lot of sheer talent and concentration, but

the win went to Revelina.

This stop welcomed three new players. Julie Hunter,

tournament director, really tries to get the word out on

the WWR. Her magnetic personality constantly attracts

newcomers to the tour. When asked how the tour

welcomed new players, WWR member Kim Morigeau

stated, We have very, very, very friendly, helpful

players. Julie (Hunter) and Linda (Silva) are

good about explaining how things operate.

Theyd bend over backwards to make new

players feel welcome. Another WWR player,

Carolin Koo, also added, Theres lots of

encouragement to keep coming.

Many still wonder why these women

devote so much time to come to

these stops: Whats their

motivation? Winner Michelle Rakin

noted, The money and the

challenge... thats all I have to say

about it. Koo said, Its a fun tour

and I get to see a lot of faces that Ive seen before. Its

a friendly game, even though its serious. I look forward

to it; its well organized. Morigeau feels that the caliber

of players is absolutely amazing; she can improve her

own game and benefit from her opponents expertise,

Im really pleased with the number of high-quality

players.

These stops are never a let down because they are such

a positive display of persistence. A lot of players and

spectators are asking themselves why something as

thrilling as the WWR doesnt bring in huge crowds. It

would be nice if there were more spectators to watch

these incredible players.

Until the next stop, these ladies deserve a pat on the

back for all of their dedication! Special thanks to Linda

Silva for all of her help at the Broken Rack stop.

Awesome job!

The Pool Whisperer . . . Lance McGillGAMBLING...WILL YOU MANAGE?

The player with the best knowledgehas the best luck.

In professional football there is acatch known as the immaculatereception. In basketball were allfamiliar with the 3/4 court buzzerbeater. In golf theres the hole inone. Baseballs bounce off of thepole foul ball or homerun. And ofcourse in boxing we have the luckypunch, all written about in highregard. In our game many of usare bored to hidden tears as welisten to the anger and rage ofsomeone telling us the story of howsome player got lucky on them andhow they shouldve won. We allknow the stories and we can evenlip sync the end of the sentences!Blah, blah, blah ... and then the ball... blah, blah, blah. Stop! Dyaunderstand? Stop it! Its likebragging that youre on the wrongend of an autopsy. There are three aspects for us toattend to when we play pool formoney: listing the most powerfulone first-they are luck, strategy and skill. Thats right, the most powerful of the threeis luck! Neither you nor I aregonna beat luck. You aregoing to outshoot someone andlose. Play enough and you aregoing to out move someone andlose. You are going to out shootand out move someone one nightand you will lose. So what doesthis have to do with management? The player with the best knowledgehas the best luck. Another way foryou to remember it is that theharder you work the luckier you get;so we do have the opportunity toaffect what kind of luck we have! The rest is information. Theknowledge/information part is whatCheese insightfully advised you onlast month get an instructor. Now tell me if you can imagine thishappening:Well Mr. Ali, the 15 rounds are upit looks like Ive won the fight.Yknow its winner take all and Idlike to go 2 or 3 more rounds andgive you a chance to win yourmoney back. NO, and it shouldnthappen.Phil Mickelson isnt playing extraholes to let tiger get back in it. The

ridiculous question VERBATUM is,youre quittin winners!? andagain VERBATUM youre notgonna give me a chance to win mymoney back? And even worseyoure not gonna give me achance to get even? Like weplayed so that nothing wouldhappen. We play to win the otherplayers money. Why arent wesaying, Yeah, I did beat you prettyeasily, let me win some more. Atthat level it becomes business andbusiness requires soundmanagement to succeed. [andsome luck.] Ill tell you whatprofessional gamblers do, notprofessional pool players, professional gamblers. They liveby laws. Even when they deviatethey have a law in place thatREQUIRES that they deviate. Andthen even the deviation iscontrolled by laws. Laws that theydont break. This is the law they

have that I used.QUIT ON THE DOWNTURN OFAN UPSWING. Can you see whatthat means? When things havebeen going your way for a whileand begin to change QUIT! .......QUIT! I like writing that because Iknow the controversy its gonnacause especially in Oregon. QUITEM! Go home. Use the rule of 1lopsided loss or 2 consecutivelosses. Either way QUIT. Yourenot gonna do it are you? I thinkthat some of you will. And inregards to leaving - have a time setthat you will be gone. And in orderto do this successfully youll needsome information, information thatyou probably never looked to.Gamblers will tell you that theroulette wheel will make about 100decisions in an hour; and that thedice will be thrown about 200 timesin an hour yielding 50-60 decisionswithin that hour. They need thatinformation to even beginmanagement. You should knowhow many racks of one pocket you

could play within your time frame. How many races to 7 in 9 ball fitinto the time frame that you haveset?Next topic of management is torequire players to freeze up themoney. Clearly this would eliminateso many of the problems we see.So if it is such a surefire solution, why is it not standard? Well Imgonna tell you why. It allows twothings to go on that are to yourdisadvantage. First it allows themto play you a race when they haveno money in their pocket. Thatmeans that if they win that race andcontinue on, you let them use yourown money to win your money fromyou. The other thing not freezing up thecash allows is this: lets say youand mark agree to play for $50.00a set; he may only have $50.00;he may have $100.00. You mayhave $2000.00. It is lousy

management for you to allowthem a shot at thousandswhen you can only win$50.00. And in the case ofthem playing you with no

money at all they have a chanceto win $2000.00 and the most youcan win is the fight. Mot goodsound management. Freeze upthe cash. Poolroom owners needto get back into being involved inthe gambling that goes on in theirrooms. Today a lot of them thinkthey are protecting themselves bynot allowing gambling well thatslike asking the monkeys to stay outof the banana puddin. Hold thecash, referee the calls andestablish the rules for that set. No,Im not saying that its your job-what I am saying is that it wouldhelp us all and as you know theyare going to gamble. Players inreturn PLEASE throw the roomowner a bone when you win.Especially when you win big.Heres my talk about alcohol etc.and its brief. In Las Vegas as yougamble they will GIVE you all of thealcohol you can consume. Imaginethat. The smartest and mostsuccessful gamblers on the planet(Pool Whisperer continued on page 23)

John Horsfall

Saint John, New BrunswickAugust 30-September 1,2002There was only one way that JohnHorsfall could be sure of a spot in nextyears World Championship in Cardiffand that was to win the 2002Canadian Championship. With thatthought in mind, he went straightthrough a grueling three days of toughcompetition in the sixty-four playerfield with never a loss. The likeable lanky Horsfall capturedthe one major title that had eluded himthroughout his career with a 15-7victory over Raymond Cruz of Toronto,Ontario. Horsfall is known to readers of Chalk and Cue (Canadas BilliardMagazine) as a regular instructional columnist with co-author Robert-Eighteen-Bisang. The Vancouver native is a force on the internationalpool scene and is a player representative for Falcon Cues of Mississauga,Ontario.John had wins over Darrel Hatfield (New Brunswick) 11-6, Craig Cochrane(New Brunswick) 11-10, Benny Onyschuk (Alberta) 11-5, Paul Potier(British Columbia) 11-10, Brad Poorman (Saskatchewan) 11-4, RaymondCruz (Ontario) 11-8 and Raymond Cruz 15-7. He struggled in his matchwith Cochrane and came back from being down 5-1 against Onyschuk. The also gentlemanly Raymond Cruz is a talented Philipino player whohas now a spot to represent Canada at the World Championship nextyear. September 20, 2002Colorado Springs, CO In a recentreport issued by the InternationalOlympic Committees (IOC)Executive Board, billiards, amongother sports, has beenrecommended to not be includedin the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing2008. Though this seems like astep backward for billiards, itactually may pave the way foreventual inclusion in the OlympicGames, according to JorgenSandman, President of the WorldConfederation of Billiard Sports(WCBS), the cue sportorganization recognized by theIOC. We have known for sometime that the IOC really cannotallow the Olympic Games to growany further. In order for billiards tobe accepted for inclusion into theOlympic Program, others sports ordisciplines will have to beeliminated. The IOC report isrecommending a number of suchchanges as well, states Mr.Sandman.When considering additions to theOlympic program, it must be shownthat the new sport brings additionalvalue to the program by virtue ofstatistics reviewed on federationaffiliation, nations competing inmajor events and broadcast and

press coverage of major events, according to the IOC report. Inaddition to billiards, the followingsports were recommended to notbe included in the 2008 Beijingprogram: air sports, boules (similarto bocce), dance sport, bowling, racquetball, water skiing, squash, underwater sports and Wushu(martial arts). The IOC Executive Board alsoissued a set of sport specificconsiderations against which allfuture Olympic programs will bejudged including global public/media interest, social value, youth-emphasis, objective judging andparticipation by both men andwomen. To varying degrees, billiards stacks up to theseconsiderations quite well. Thechallenge is for the variousgoverning bodies to accumulatecredible statistics to support thecase for billiards. While Olympic participation is theultimate goal for billiards, snookerand carom, there are many stepsalong the way that will increase thepopularity of cue sports and drivethe billiard industry. For the secondtime, billiards will be a part of theAsian Games (Pusan, SouthKorea, 2002). Representing theUnited States, Jeanette Lee

brought home the Gold at the 2001World Games in Akita, Japan, andbilliards will again be on theprogram of the 2005 World Games(Duisburg, Germany). Otherimportant events that billiards hasa chance for inclusion are theCommonwealth Games, theAfrican Games and the Pan AmGames. The Billiard Congress of America(BCA) recently reworked its bylawsand reconfigured its board ofdirectors to be compliant withUnited States Olympic Committee(USOC) requirements for anAffiliated Sport Organization. In Mr.Sandmans opinion, USOCacceptance of billiards as a sportwill reflect very positive on billiardsas a whole, and will give otherNational Olympic Committees(NOCs) a signal in the rightdirection. Were committed to the long-termsuccess of seeing cue sportsincluded in the Olympic and PanAmerican Games, said BCAExecutive Director Stephen Ducoff. The IOC recommendationsprovide us with a clear roadmap formaking a strong case for billiardsand we intend to aggressivelypursue our Olympic goals.

Wiita [7-2] before losing in a sizeable upset to Kim Sijer [2-7]. Undeterred, she battled through a nail-biter match against Katherine Czarkowski tosteer herself back in line for a shot at first place and A side dominator,Kim Sijer, in the finals. Marthawould have her chance to settle thescore. The finals would be a battle of will, determination and a great deal ofstamina, as the victor wouldnt riseto the top until 4 1/2 hours later.Kim had the comfortable positionof needing to win just one race toseven. Martha went into the finalsknowing shed have her work cutout for her. She needed to win tworaces to seven against the playerwho had dished out her only lossof the tournament. With the finalsunderway, it was looking as though Kim would once again topple Marthawith a lead of 5-3. Living up to her reputation as Comeback Queen

however, Martha bore down andmethodically worked her way to a first-set win of [7-6] over Kim.With the first set behind her, Kim couldsee the rematch with Martha was notgoing to be as simple as their previousmatch-up. Indeed, moving into the firstgame of the second set, Marthaperformed a nice run out from the 5 andpulled off the first winning game of theset. Marthas next item in her bag oftricks would be some shrewd safetyplay, 3-fouling Kim one game, to glideto a comfortable lead of [4-1]. Aftertaking a break, the players came back

to the table and a very determined Kim worked her way meticulouslyback to tie the score [4-4]. From there the players continued trading timeat the table as well as games. With a lead of 6-5, Martha took advantageof Kims miss at a 5 ball, running out for the win [7-6]. With that, Marthaclaimed her very first championship on the tour, raking in $572 and 200tour points. The NWPA would like to once again thank The Register Guard newspaperof Springfield, OR for publishing a pre-event announcement and dailyresults from the tournament. The NWPA will hold its final points-earningevent of the 2002 season October 12-13 at The Breaking Point inLynnwood, Washington. An hour and forty minutes later after getting over my anger, Iclimbed back into the match and finally forged a lead. Then, leading ninegames to six, I ran three racks from the break and found myself in an ofthoped for zone.

A crowd gathered around our table. Charley Sturgis had parkedhis wheelchair in its familiar place. I grabbed the seat next to him.

Carter, he said, remember when I said one day they would startcoming to you?

Nod.He sighed and said, I think the time has come.My eyes snapped around and held his gaze.Youre using your head, Carter. Your games reached another

level and people are watching. His eyes moved subtly up and staredacross the room.

Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell had hopped in the door and was leaningagainst the corner of the wall, watching.

Charleys words were like a sudden infusion of energy into mysystem. On the next break, I caught all of the one ball and exploded therack beautifully. The nine, like a shot out of a cannon, flew out of therack, got bumped by the seven, scooted down the table, got kissed bythe three, then the four, and strolled straight into the lower right cornerpocket.

Hells Bells! Wakefield hissed, then rose from his chair and fishedout a ten spot and put it on the rail. I picked up the greenback andstuffed it into my jeans.

Time, Eddy! Wakefield screamed across the room, then lookedat me and added. Enough, Carter. Youre hittem too good tonight. Hepaused. Gettin to be a habit.

Without expression, I leaned my hips against the rail and eyedCharley Sturgis. He was smiling. It was a smile that no one else wouldhave recognized but flowed slightly out of the corner of his mouth justbarely enough for me to see.

Hey Thin Man, Jimmy, the Stick, Gadwell roared across the room.Russell, the Thin Man Case looked up immediately. Surrounded

by friends, he leaned to his right, craned his neck and searched for thevoice. Seeing Gadwell, he barked back, Yeah, Stick, whaddaya need?

Gadwell pointed with his chin to the table where Wakefield and Ihad just finished playing. Bout some nine ball? Fifty a game, hechallenged.

Case, his face blotched from aging, blinked his eyes and thoughtabout the challenge. Then, as though he had figured it all out in his headin a moments time, turned and said. Hey, Carter, that stick youve beenusing, how about letting me take a look at it?

Sure, Mr. Case, I said youthfully, and crossed around the tableand handed him the cue. His high cheekbones swelled and drew me tohis eyes.

He studied it, felt the shaft and ran it through his fingers and said, pretty good cue stick, huh?

Yes, sir, I said, its a Palmer. Won it in an eight ball match aboutsix months ago. Can use it if you like, Mr. Case.

He pursed his lips and stared at the cue without expression, thenhe shoved it right back into my hands and said suddenly, How bout youuse it?

Me? I said, leaning back.Yeah, he declared, then leaned over and yelled across the room,

Gadwell, bout playing the kid some nine ball. Ill back him.- But Mr. Case -The kid? Gadwell replied, Keating?Yep.Gadwell lit up like a light bulb. Still fifty a game? he baited. That okay with you, kid?I shrugged. Geez, me against Jimmy the Stick Gadwell for fifty a

game.Well split the winnings fifty, fifty. You lose n Ill take the heat.Charley Sturgis nodded barely enough for me to see. I paused,

let out a sigh, then glanced back to the Thin Man and said, Sure, Mr.Case.

The Thin Man swung around and yelled to Eddy Cooksey.Rackem on table five, Eddy! Looks like were gonna play some pool!

Ears perked up quickly and the packed room surged toward tablefive. Chairs flew into position and arms reached for greenbacks wantingto wager the outcome. Others headed for the bar, and doubled up ontheir drinks.

I took in a deep breath and slowly exhaled. No one was laughing. And for a moment, my thoughts went back three years to that first night inWillies.

TAKING A CUE FROM POOLKIDS RACK-UP SUCCESS IN SCHOOL

From: Amy Long , Director of Marketing & Business DevelopmentColorado Springs, CO School is back in session. Time to put away thetoys of summer and pick up the tools of learning, such as books, pencils, paper, pool cues. Pool cues? Yes, pool cues! A unique school program inSacramento, Calif., takes high school students from the classroom to thepoolroom to learn skills that will help them at school and throughout life. The program, part of Del Campo High Schools physical educationcurriculum, just may set the standard for schools nationwide. The course,Billiards I: A Lifetime Sport, was started by a high school physicaleducation teacher and a billiard instructor. According to PE instructorMarcie Davis, it came about one day when she was teaching a classoutside and it started to rain. One of the students suggested they shootpool. She searched for a place to play as well as an instructor and foundboth at Hard Times Billiards. She teamed up with Barton Mahoney, acertified Billiard Congress of America (BCA) billiard instructor who teachesthe techniques established by the nonprofit World Billiard InstructorsAssociation. I was looking for a place to teach pool and he was lookingfor a medium to teach it, Davis says.Besides going off campus to play pool and write about it, what else doesthe course teach these young people? Pool is a game that deals with thefundamentals of geometry and physics and requires hand-eyecoordination. It also teaches socialization, and students dont have to beathletes to play. Mahoney couldnt agree more, Young people appreciatethe fact that the playing field is equal with no social, physical or genderbarriers. Learning the physical geometry (of the body) through theapplication of visual geometry (of the game) is how the intricacies of poolare discovered, he concludes.Since starting the course in 1999, more than 700 students have takenthe class. Marcie thinks that what sets it apart is the fact that the classhas a reading and writing component. All classes at Del Campo requirenotebooks, and in this class, students must do peer analysis and self-analysis. The students also have assignments in which they read abouta billiard personality and write an essay. Davis sets high standards forher students in reading, writing and behavior. If a student misbehavesthey are kicked out of the class, she says. This has happened only oncesince the programs inception three years ago.BCA Hall of Fame member and author Robert Byrne loves to sing thepraises of the positive attributes of cue sports and what young peoplecan learn from the game. It teaches advance planning; choosing theshot that gives you the chance to make additional shots before youropponent does, not the one that gives you immediate gratification, hestates. It also demonstrates the concept of risk versus reward and is anexercise in discipline, in which the player learns the value of emotionalcontrol. There has been so much interest in the school program that Davis andMahoney are collaborating on a Physical Education curriculum guide.Bart is doing the writing and Im doing the collaborating, laughs Marcie.Im not a billiard player, so I play teacher. They plan to present it toeducation groups around the country. Mahoney says, The program couldgrow to be a solid curriculum on the state and national levels. Educationis a great way to bring significance to our sport and I plan to encourageother certified billiard instructors to join me in this quest. If our sport is toflourish, we must pave the way for these students they are billiardsbest ambassadors.

Its whatI call, Everybodys Got One -EGODo you know how road players make their living? Some make a stableliving off of the weak. This is soundmanagement and I see nothing wrongwith it as a conscious choice, and tosucceed at it takes a fine mixture ofskill and management. And there isthe road player, that some of you thinkyou are, the kind that comes to townand gets all of the money in the room.Money that the aforementioned playercant get. The roadie Im talking about makes his living off of other playersegos. And do you know who Mark and Vic are? They are local champions. And some of you say but those local champions went on the road. Theyare not road players. They are local champions who havent lost their caryet. True road players make their living off of the fact that players oftenplay to make a statement rather than to make money. When you seecalm on a road player you may be able to stick with her/him. Its not likely. When you see that stroke, and you will know it when you see it, you maybe able to hang with that player although it is still not likely. When yousee calm and that stroke on the same body- I am being kind enough totell you that you cannot beat that player. That is a certain way to identifyand eliminate one of your losses. And all that noise youre making inresponse to this is the reason why we get paid. Ego will get you broke.

The biggest mistake ego makes is in raising the bet after a loss. You are putting more weight on the downswing. Large downswings havesmall beginnings. Gambling has turns and surges. To succeed you willhave to master the rhythm of that particular encounter. That is theadvanced form of money management when gambling. Most of the gamblers in pool say that they love pool and what they reallylove is the action. Then they wind up going to horses, cards, dice and so

on. Fortunes can be made fromgambling. For that to be true, fortuneshave to be lost. Remember that. Whatmakes a gambler successful is not thewinning. Its what they do betweenwinnings! Im givin you gold here andI gotta go. Again please email me formore every email gets answered.I just got back from a trip to the east

coast. While I was there I realized that they were loving and using mylanguage. From that I decided to include one or two mcgillisms in eacharticle: when I was ready to play a young man in Easton and he said hecould only play for $20.00 I said to him We cant play, your papers arentin order. He was laughing to tears and ran around telling everyone didyou hear what he told me!!? Later his friend asked if he could get aclass before I left for Oregon. I asked if he had his learners permit withhim. He asked sincerely what is that? I described for him a hundreddollar bill. The last one was when I asked the musician if he wanted toplay some jackson five. [$100.00 in twenties]Thank you. See you next month and do the work. Lance E McGill

A FEW SHORT WORDS ABOUT A FRIENDBy: J M Sherman

He was the kind of man who always had a friendly smile. He was genuinelyinterested in how you felt and if things were okay with you. You wouldalways feel comfortable approaching him knowing he would be happy totalk with you. He had a charm about him. He liked to spend countlesshours a day, just shooting and practicing on his game by himself. If asked,he would eagerly accept a challenge of a game or two for fun. For manyyears he would frequent Hot Shots Billiards in Beaverton, sometimes fiveto seven times a week. For about a year, he even worked the counter asa salesperson bringing his knowledge of the game to many newcustomers. His most endearing qualities though was his spirit, alwaysupbeat, optimistic, both gentle and enthusiastic. After learning of hisdemise, many customers who knew of him were badly shaken andshocked in disbelief to hear of his passing. We will always remember hissmiling face and comfort of his friendship. He will be missed. Rest inPeace, Barry. Good Bye.

get there. The W.S.P.L. Titleholders presently starts withDivision Playoffs one week before the weekendevent. There are 24 teams involved, includingthe Wild Card Draws (6 Wild Card Draws). Bythe time we make it to the first Saturday matchthere are only 12 teams left in the tournament. On Saturday, September 7th, 2002, the SummerTitleholders brought to the table 12 of the best-matched teams that the W.S.P.L. has seen sofar and there were many records and scenariosin ACTION!!!Before the weekend was over some skill levelswould be increased on some teams (as theplayers have voted on) and one team from TheTime OutTa v e r nw o u l dplay ar e c o r dsetting 4SuddenD e a t hMatchesin orderto make it to a 3rd place finish. The Time OutStrokers Captained by Paul Thompson from theSea/Fed/Div. in Federal Way, received a crashcourse on how to play under pressure by takingevery team match to a 6th and final SuddenDeath Match Playoff. They won every match butthe last one. It was a very exciting weekend forthe players of the Time Out Strokers, as theyalmost pulled off the 4th Sudden Death Matchto make it to the final 2 teams. Not bad for thefirst season team. Im sure that they will do verywell in the State Tournament in February!!!But the most interesting stories of thetournament would come out of the cities ofSumner and Tacoma, where the final 2 teams

in the championship would rise!Oh Gallaghers, Tequila Shooters the reigningTitleholders Champions, would have theirchance to defend their Title, and retire the 1st

Titleholders Trophy! WOW, what a stage to setfor the Final Match!!As fate would have it Oh Gallaghers struggledthrough their next session (point wise), leadingup to their next chance to defend their title. Butwith leadership and a new D.C. on their team, they would make it to the Summer Titleholdersby drawing (1) of the (6) Wild Card Draws.Dave Hagedorn, Captain and Ron Gates Co-Captain-D.C. managed to beat the #1 team inpoints in theS u n r i s eDivision in thefirst week ofPlayoffs, tomake it backto theS u m m e rTitleholders!!The stagewas set, bytheir teamwinning theirfirst 4m a t c h e s !They hadsuccessfully made it back to their secondconsecutive Titleholders Match! The most interesting team story though, comesout of the city of Sumner, where the GrandCentral team, The Automatiks will probablynever have quite the same inspiration as theydid for this tournament!! WHO KNOWS WHYSOMETHINGS HAPPEN? I truly believe this isa great Theme for the W.S.P.L.s SummerTitleholders, Friendship, Love and a True Desireto win for the most profound reason (forsomeone else and not YOURSELF). Thefollowing story is truly dedicated to ChrisButenko, who we nearly lost during the courseof this session, to a motorcycle accident.Having become a Division Rep during thecourse of the session; Chris was riding homelate one night during league, and lost tractionon gravel. At the time he seemed to damagehis motorcycle more than himself. Over a periodof time he would end up in the hospital. Hiscondition would change many times, and wouldfinally get worse before the Titleholders. So, withthe help of his teammates, friends, wife and theW.S.P.L.s Survival Rule, his team, who finishedfirst in points in their division would start itscourse through the playoffs, and Inspired theywere!!!With their new name (THE AUTOMATIKS) theymanaged to win their first match on Saturdaymorning by playing a Sudden Death Matchagainst Qz Sofa Kings, who I might add wouldend up becoming the Best Sportsmanship Teamof the tournament!!

Your tournament is coming! After that Sudden Death Match it seems thatFate dealt the Automatiks a great hand. Theyreceived a Bye after the second match, whichthey won in four straight matches, and hadSunday morning off. This set the stage for the final 2-team match! The AUTOMATIKS against THE TEQUILASHOOTERS!! This time in the tournament theOh Gallaghers team was worn down, and theGrand Central Automatiks managed to beatthem four straight!! WOW!! WHAT A FINISH!Id like to take this time to THANK ALL OF THEOFFICIALS, AND Rick Carlson for their supportin making this tournament run so smooth!
