About Us

Letter to the Editor:First, I love your publication. I wasreading in “The Break” about the IPTand the financial woes andspeculation abounding about thetour. I feel that pool is a sport thatcan be enjoyed by everyone and isrightfully loved by millions. What theIPT instigated was a long timecoming. I watched classic pool onESPN faithfully. Seeing nationaltreasures like Willie Mosconi andLuther Lassiter play for ridiculouslylow amounts was a disgrace thenand the money in pool has not beenmuch better until the IPT. I feel thepool community has been let downby poor management and a lack ofbacking by its sponsors. Onecompany in particular can sponsorbowling to the tune of 200,000 pluson every national televised match...but, in the challenge ofchampions.....eight WORLD poolchampions compete for 50,000 total.A few years ago there was a nationalCanadian Club tournament. In thestate finals in Helena, first place won$500 and second place won an Icecooler. Here in Montana as I writethis, the State Championships arethis weekend and the HolidayClassic is coming soon. Both greatevents. I will be playing in arguablythe two biggest tournaments thestate has for an entry fee of $45dollars on one and $50 plus greenfees on another. The most I couldwin in both with Calcutta is still under$1000.If I remember, many of theplayers in the last holiday classic thatplaced in the top ten, barely brokeeven. Spending $75 dollars or moreto win $100 over a weekend isignorant. Chasing a nonexistentpayout happens in every casino inour state at one time or another. Iknow the game is not about themoney, but from the grass roots tothe BCA nationals, we can all dobetter. God bless the IPT and theidea behind it.Thank you , Jack Salveson, Billings, MT

By: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

As I headed out on mydeliveries forNovember, I hadplanned to attendthe WPBANationals thefollowing week.It seemed like ithad rainedevery minuteof everyd a yand bythe end of the month, ithad become the wettestmonth on record for theNorthwest.Chinook Winds CasinoResort in Lincoln City,Oregon for the fourthconsecutive year hosted the WPBACuetec Cues National 9-BallChampionships, November 8-12,2006. The events started off

Wednesday with aPro-Am CelebrityShoot-out with thep r o c e e d s

benefiting MySister’s Place inLincoln City.

W P B Atournament playstarted onT h u r s d a y .S p e c t a t o r scame from allover then o r t h w e s tincluding Wayneand MarilynBoucher, ownersof the Broken

Rack in Emeryville, California.Players were eliminated one by onethroughout the week. I had a chanceto talk to a lot of fans as well as

players, most of the concerns werethe weather and the IPT. There

were eight Brunswick tablesset up for play with spectator

seating on 3 sides. You couldsit and watch most all the tables

with keeping most of your focus on2 or 3 table play. Even JenniferBarretta was there and pregnant. She is teaching her child about thelove of the game. There was also an APA Regionaltournament in the next room. Theladies of the WPBA wouldgenerously spend their time withthe APA players and even play inmany tournaments. As the tournament field whittleddown, play went from a doubleelimination format to a round of

sixteen - single elimination. TheSunday rounds would be televisedby ESPN for a December broadcast(ESPN does not have a budget forbilliards. The WPBA pays ESPN tocome in and film the events. This ispaid for through sponshorships.)See POOL ON TV for the times anddates- page 27.In the final four Allison Fisher faced

while Karen Corr and Ga YoungKim were slated to compete in semi-final #2.Kelly Fisher (ranked #4) advancedto this match with wins over MelissaHerndon 9-3 and Sarah Rousey 9-2to meet Allison Fisher (ranked #1).Allison had easy wins over MeganMinerich 9-1 and Gerda Hoffstatter9-2 to face “the other” Fisher. playing snooker at the age of 13. Shewas introduced to the game by herfather and tutored by Lionel Payneat a local snooker hall.Allison is also from England andstarted playing snooker at the veryyoung age of 7 when she received a

child’s snooker table for Christmas.By the time she was 12 she hadgraduated to a full size snookertable. In the first match, Kelly found herselfat the mercy of Allison when she washaving problems with her breaks. The match ended with Allisonvictorious over Kelly 7-5.The second semi-final match sawKaren Corr (ranked #2) meet up withGa Young Kim (ranked #6)last year’s champion.Karen nicknamed the “Irish Invader”was born in Ballymondy, NorthernIreland. She joined the WPBA tour in1999 after winning her first pro eventin New York the previous July.Ga Young sometimes called “LittleDevil Girl” was born in Seoul, SouthKorea and started her WPBA careerin 2004. This came after she playedin the 2003 BCA Open. She learnedto play in her father’s pool hall PoolTop.Ga Young came out swinging and

took a commanding lead 5-2 overKaren. This did not deter Karenas she won the next three racksbut it was not enough toovercome Ga Youngwho took the match 7-5.

It now came down toAllison Fisher andGa Young Kim. Theshooting wasanything buts p e c t a c u l a rbetween Ms Kimand Ms Fisher. Withtighter pockets youcould see thefrustration level risewhen a shot wasmissed. What wasunusual for MsFisher was stonefaced, unemotionaland focuseddemeanor was

obviously rattled. Both ladies tied at6-6, it seemed like league play a tyour local saloon. Youknew you were going to getanother chance to shoot.Ga Young’s obviousdispleasure at her shootingwas made very clear by heremotional outbursts, whichmay have been acontributing factor that

almost brought her totears after Allison sankthe last 9. The matchended 7-6 and Allisonwas crowned this year’snational champion. On a personal note: Myfirst full day on the beach,I woke up to partial blueskies and the everchanging weatherbecoming nicer. From myperch on a 200 foot cliff, sat my motel

room, as I peeredtowards the

s a n d yb e a c h e s ,noticed ar a i n b o w ,following it to itsend that landedon the beach.Never beforehad I seen theend of arainbow asthe rain &sun became

more predominant. I followed upwardalong the arch and again found theother end of the rainbow some 500or more yards north. I could see thearch of the rainbow, both ends(something I had never seenbefore), yet NO POT OF GOLD!Two chances and I still came upempty, perhaps the pot of gold is notat the end, yet in the seeing of.The WPBA will return again next year.It was a pleasure to meet and seeeverybody and the turnout for theevent has grown steadily. Hope tosee you here next year.

On October 20-21st, the NWPA held its season ending tournament andbanquet at Uncle Jack’s Billiards in Lynnwood, WA. If you haven’t been tothis room recently, you’re missing out. It was completely refurbished andnow has a full service bar with leather couches, fireplace, big screenplasmas and five 7 foot tables to complement its huge pool room.

During the banquet there was a new item, the First Annual TournamentDirector’s Award was given away. This recognizes sportsmanship, attitude, volunteerism and professionalism. It is awarded by the non-playervolunteers who work so hard behind the scenes. In a unanimous vote, wecongratulate Elaine Eberly on her deserved recognition. The action started Saturday with 33 players fighting for final rankings and aWPBA Qualifying spot for 2007. The added money for this event wasprovided by Uncle Jack’s with Electronic Gaming and the NWPA providingthe WPBA Spot. This was partially due to the generosity of Jim Lebold ofThe Cue Ball. Linda Carter donated a vacation cruise which we were thenable to raffle off to help raise money for our 2007 season. Congratulationsto those winners.By Sunday, the point finals matched Joanne Ashton, who beat RachaelAbbink, a WPBA regular in 2006 playing in her 1st, but not last, NWPAtourney 7-6, Kim Jones 7-5, Linda Dick 7-3, Mary Hopkin 7-6 and CrystalOpoka, herself playing in her 1st NWPA event, who beat Susan Gray 7-1,Kathy Iwata 7-2, Jo Woodward 7-2 and rallied from a 6-3 deficit to beatDeby Welfringer 7-6. This momentum continued for Crystal and she wonthe point 7-5.On the B side, Kim Jones and Deby Welfringer beat Mary Hopkin andRachael Abbink 7-4 respectively and Kim then lost to Deby 7-4 to faceJoanne. Upset by her loss to Crystal, Joanne was on fire and won 7-2, butrevenge was not to be and in a back and forth match, Crystal prevailed 9-7 to win in her first NWPA appearance. This hasn’t happened since HsinHuang did it in 2003 and then went on to be the 2005 WPBA Rookie of theYear. (No pressure Crystal). Ok, it may have happened another time. The final standings became important later when a last minute cancellationin Lincoln City had the WPBA asking us for our highest ranked player withindriving distance that could be there in a matter of a few hours. Our #2finisher was Kim Jones and she threw all her stuff in a suitcase to join uslate on Wednesday, November 8th. One of four (4) NWPA players in thefield, she started Thursday by squeaking out a 9-8 win against the #32ranked player and then demolishing the #16 player, Julie Kelly 9-3. At 10pmFriday, her reward was Allison Fisher, who ran every available rack winning9-1. Saturday morning, Kim played what should have been an evenlymatched opponent, but the hundreds of spectators, the spotlight (she wasthe talk of the tournament) and nerves were a tougher opponent. She lost9-2. However, congrats and thanks to Kim, winning two matches againsthighly ranked players in her 1st event brings greater respectability and prideto all of us in the Northwest.

Arlo Walsman played and won hisfirst Sam’s 14-1 Tournament,November 5. After edging ChrisCulligan in the first match of the finals50 to 46, Arlo the new kid beat NortonJohnson the old timer in the finalmatch 50 to 17. Akio Nakashimacame in thrid.Arlo marched through the dayundefeated and took the high-runprize with a modest run of 22. A highrun of 22 is clearly a bad day for thistop notch shooter. Having had theopportunity of being waxed with a 45-ball run by Arlo a few weeks ago, Ican assure you we are going to seegreat things from this young man. Many thanks to Sam Rabito forrunning the tournament in myabsence. This month’s Artistic Shot is from the prop/novelty/special arts disciplineand has a Degree of Difficulty,(DOD)of 8. You may choose either C or F pocket on this shot. To set the shot upplace an object ball on the foot spot. The cue ball is in hand anywherebehind the head string. The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball

one handed jacked up (no rail or bridge allowed)to the object ball on the footspot. Make the object ball in either pocket C or F. Unless obvious from cueball placement, shooter must designate which pocket the object ball will bemade in. There is no penalty for scratching. Here are a couple of tips to aidyou in making this shot. Hold your cue very close to the balance point so itstays level as you come down to shot this shot. Align the tip on the cue ballto hit the cue ball along it’s vertical axis, (no English), and use one tip ofhigh. Don’t stoke this shot in mid air, just come forward with your cue. When practicing this shot, align the cue ball to the object ball for a half ballaim. To do this put a ghost ball where the cue ball will be upon contact ofthe ball on the foot spot.Of course align the ghost ball and object ball to be made in the full openingof the pocket. With your cue ball aligned for a half ball aim you now can usethe center of your shaft as an aiming device. Aim the center of your shaft tothe farthest outside edge of the object ball opposite the side of the pocketyou wish to cut the ball into. This shot takes steady nerves. I made this shot on my first attempt at the 2003 U.S. Open Artistic PoolChampionship at Accu-Billiards in New Bedford, Mass. Stefano Pelingawon the event and Mike Massey finished second. Good Luck on this one!

Try Some One PocketBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

Bob Jewett

San Francisco Billiard Academy

December 2006www.onthebreaknews.comPage 8

I’m a firm believer in trying different games. Eachnew game will make you work on specific aspectsof your fundamentals, strategy or techniques, andthose improvements will carry over to the gamesyou usually play. Besides, the other games can bea lot of fun.In a past article, I urged you to try some straightpool. It is one of the great games at pool. Thismonth I’m promoting the pool game for movers andthinkers: one pocket. The rules are fairly simple. Each player gets apocket. The first player to get eight balls into hispocket wins the game.If you foul, no ball pocketed on the shot counts, andyou have to put up one of the balls you made as apenalty. If you make a ball in your pocket on a shot, you go on shooting, even if you have also made a

ball in your opponent’s pocket or elsewhere. Balls that come back onto thetable for fouls or being pocketed in extraneous pockets are spotted on thelong string.Deciding pockets is more or less automatic. It is nearly always obviouswhich pocket the breaker is going for, and that is his pocket. The opponentgets the other foot pocket. There are rare “trick” breaks that are not soobvious, and for those the breaker should designate his pocket.

The breaker willbreak the rack softlytoward a cornerpocket and try toleave the cue ball onhis opponent’s sideof the table. Thestandard break shotis shown in thediagram. The shot isplayed with insideEnglish (left in thiscase) to just skim thehead ball and caromonto the ball behindit. The cue ball thenhits the end rail, theinside Englishremoves somespeed andstraightens out theangle and the cueball ends at aboutpoint A.If you are luckyenough on the breakto get some of theballs to stop nearyour pocket, youropponent will behidden behind thenearly full rack. Onevery standardresponse for thesecond shot is to play the cue ball off a ball at about B to end in the jaws ofthe pocket at C.There is a lot of tradition at one pocket, and if you are just starting out, it’sgood for you to know about it so you don’t offend the old-timers. You alternatebreaks, because the break is a very important and potentially productiveshot, like the first move at chess. Usually both players will break to thesame pocket as it is easier or the table rolls a little into that pocket comparedto the other corner. If you foul and have no balls to spot, put a coin on thecushion by your pocket to mark the debt. Those balls are spotted asavailable at the end of your turn.It is considered really impolite to touch your opponent’s balls. (That shouldn’tbe hard to remember.) If he fouls, let him do the spotting. If you are playingon a table with a ball return, let him put his balls in the ball slot in the front ofthe table at the end of his turn. I think this unwritten rule comes from thoseplayers who “accidentally” put balls into the wrong slot.If you owe balls (coins are on the rail) and you make some balls on yourturn but forget to spot them at the end, there are a couple of ways to play.Petty crooks prefer the “you snooze, you lose” rule which says that if youforget to make your opponent spot the balls he owes, the debt is forgiven. The right way to play is to spot the balls one full turn after the mistake isnoted. The wait is needed because spotting the forgotten ball immediatelymight ruin a good safety by the sudden appearance of a ball to shoot at.

Our Women’s Masters Team is a thirdof the way into the new fall leaguesession. This year, we picked up a fifthplayer for the league. He won’t beplaying with us in Vegas, but we needfive players on league night. As an APA6 in 8 ball, this is his first time playingVNEA or BCA. I’m proud of him forstepping outside the APA box.During league a couple weeks ago, hemissed a shot and his opponent beganrunning the table. With each ball made,I watched in frustration as my newteammate became antsy and anxious.

He paced around and finally set his cue down and mumbled, “Its over. I’msorry. He’s out. It’s over.” I could’ve strangled him…There are plenty of bad habits I could write about. In fact, I have. I wrote anentire book about them. Some of the worst habits are anything that takesyou away from being fully and completely prepared to kill. This is a perfectexample. To verbalize the fact that your opponent is out and that the gameis over is simply giving up and I refuse to give up. Although he didn’t breakdown his cue, he may as well have in my eyes. It’s understandable to be disappointed when you miss a shot or don’t dowhat you intended to, but I found his display of quitting behavior to beunacceptable. We spoke about it after his match and he tried to explainthat he was “being realistic” and knew his opponent was going to get out.I explained that while his opponent is at the table, he has thoughts of losingto them and what the score will be versus what it should’ve been. And,while my opponent is at the table, I’m planning my next move and expectingthem to make a mistake (whether it happens or not). I’m hoping they willmiss, scratch, miscue, or even trip and bump into the table and land on thecue ball so I can have ball in hand. The point is that no matter how good things look for my opponent and not-so-good they may look for me, I refuse to give up. If you’re just going to giveup whether it’s mentally or physically, then why play at all? If you’re notgoing to give 100% whether you’re at the table or not, then you can’t expect100% in return. Do your best and expect the best! The holidays are just around the corner. Don’t Give upUnless You’re Giving up a Bad Habit

When racking, put light or contrasting balls in the front of the rack. It’sconsidered an insult to put two dark balls up front, as it makes it harder toaim the thin hit you need for the break. (Personally, I don’t care which ballsare in front, but I try to be careful when racking.)Also on the rack, the balls need to be as tight as possible, especially infront. If they are loose, funny things start to happen, like the corner ballnear your opponent’s pocket moving too far and giving up a shot.If a ball is in the jaws of your opponent’s pocket, the best move is usually tosink it for him. He keeps it, but he has no way play position from it. Also, ifyou leave the cue ball right by his pocket, he will usually have no good shot.If you scratch on the shot that makes your opponent’s ball, it doesn’t countfor him, and spots up.Try playing some one pocket for the next month, and in the January issue,I’ll discuss some special moves and strategies. If you haven’t tried thegame yet, I think you are in for a treat.

Last month we discussed the big changes thathappened after World War II ended. The flatrail and oversize slate on the Anniversary,Centennial, Modern and Sport King tables. TheAnniversary and Sport King continued from1945 to the mid sixties but Brunswick hadbeen designing a new look for the bowlinglanes that were now springing up all over theworld. Lots of what was then the hot colors.White, a light grey called classic white,Tangerine, Blue and Gold. This line of bowlinglane equipment was called the “Gold Crown look” and they designed a lineof billiard tables to go with it. Lots of formed plastics, shinny castings andextrusions and a round foot on a very shapely leg. My Aunt Olive, whoowned Wayne’s Billiards in downtown Portland described it well as a fatlady in a tight skirt. The look was very commercial and it stuck on for 40 years and still is thehot item of the 21st century. The Gold Crown was and is, the look of pool. There have been four major changes in the tables. The 6100 Series knownas the Gold Crown I had a lot to be desired. The feet were attached with a#12 screw and the hole was pre-drilled too large so the foot would fall off ifthe frame was lifted too far and was not adjustable. The company sentround veneer shims, but a lot of the floors were so far out of level that therewas never enough. It didn’t take long to discover that you could shim betweenthe leg and the frame so that the shims were not required and they nolonger skidded out from the foot. The biggest problem came with the aprons. The first Gold Crown Dad and I encountered was in Lewiston, Idaho.Brunswick had sent us to install two tables at the bowling lanes there. Theshipping cartons were not the same as we were used to seeing and as weopened them out came a brand new table and of course we were a longway from home. Everything went well for a while. The frame was the sameas the Anniversary; the slate was the same and the rails were no problem;but the aprons were a b——. The extrusions to hold them on were so stiffthat the corners did not want to close. The closer clips to fasten the cornerdid not want to go on and when you got them on you couldn’t get more than1/4 of the 3/8 head on the bolt. We placed a collect call to the factory and Ihad my first chance to talk to a new friend Miles Unteed, the engineer whohad designed the table. He told us to put paste wax on the extrusion andhead to the nearest Sears store for an R4343 ratcheting wrench that lookedlike a regular open end but had a bite taken out of one of the jaws. Problemsolved. The natural slate from Pennsylvania was a real problem on the first modelsshaled within 90 days as the last of the Anniversary tables, and the companyswitched to Blue Stone. It was much more dependable and stable. Thosetops still survive while very few of the slate tops are still on their tables.Sam Chapman discovered that the company was advertising natural slate, but sold him Blue Stone and sued Brunswick and won. Years later two ofthe table tops failed. The only slate tops he had been shipped. As I mentioned in last month’s article, the movie “The Hustler” changedeverything in the world of pool. Overnight the demand for pool tables wentoff the charts. Brunswick was not ready for the demand and a 90 day waitwas the rule. Since bowling and billiards were hot, financing was easy. Itonly required 10% down and a lifetime to pay so the monthly paymentswere easy. Bowling lanes were opening everywhere and the proprietorswere also able to open freestanding billiard rooms. The first of these was inBeaverton, then Forest Grove, Hillsboro and finally Eugene. Play wasimmediate and heavy, but management was not, and that chain failed verysoon. The cash vanished faster than the payments could be made andthey closed one by one. We took the tables out of the Beaverton locationloaded them into a truck ready to go back to Brunswick. The next day wegot a call from Dick Arney, the Brunswick foreman, “Go back to the samelocation and set them back up.”

Double and TripleThere doesn’t seem to be any way to make the 4-ball in the lower-left corner, but it can be triple-banked. Use rightsidespin and cutthe 4-ball justenough to theright to avoid thekiss. At the right, the 5-ball can bebanked to a pointbeyond the lowerside pocket andinto the upper side pocket. Align the balls by laying your cue on the table onthe dashed line. Use a hard stroke and maximum left English

Triple BanksAt the left, the 3-ball and the cueball are both a ball width from the rail.

Nevertheless, the3-ball can betriple-banked intothe lower-left-hand corner, which might bedesirable if theupper-left-cornerpocket is blocked.Use a hardstroke, cut the 3slightly to theright, and use

plenty of right English. It’s easier to miss an immediate kiss if you place the3-ball a half inch farther from the rail than the cueball. The triple bank at the right is even more surprising. Note the line of centersof the combination. By shooting the cueball into the left side of the 1-ball,the 2-ball is not only thrown to the right, it is given a little right sidespin.

Conventional wisdom holds that the harder you shoot a bank shot, the“shorter” it goes, yet many teachers and instructional books state that theangle of a ball going into a rail is the same as the angle coming out. Youcan’t have it both ways. In fact, the angle of incidence is seldom exactlyequal to the angle of reflection (as physicists would put it). When a naturally rolling ball rebounds from a cushion, the topspin bendsits path forward and it banks “long”. Any sidespin the ball has when it hitsthe cushion also, of course, affects the rebound angle.

November 25-26By: Curt Watts, tournament directorThe 7th Annual Thanksgivingweekend Bozeman HolidayClassic ended with a bang Sundayas Jana Montour from Edmonton,AB bested Denver-based BonniePlowman in the women’s finals, while on the other side, representing Vancouver, BC,Stan Tourangeau beat Tony Ruhlfrom Idaho Falls, ID. Bothmatches were decided on smallmistakes amidst flurries ofrunouts; the tables that were notrun out due to these errors wentto the other side and determinedthe matches. The field itself wasthe largest ever for the classicwith 44 women and 121 men, bothrecords. These fields were pareddown to 8 women and 16 men forSunday’s finals. Tourangeau won$1610 from the purse and Calcuttaof $2215, while Montour received

$1000 along with the Calcuttaof $1140. Men finishing 17ththrough 24th got $100 fortheir efforts. Saturday was abloodbath in some bracketswith the likes of Jeff Boucher,Kevin Cardinal, Ace Brown,Dwayne Bjornstad, RickJohn, Pete Sky, JeremySmith, Mark Vinogradov,Tony Weert, Merv White, T ROlson and Bob Floresfalling in the mayhem.Including in thehighlights of Sunday’splay were a 3rd and4th placem a t c hbetweenStan Tourangeau(pronounced torango) and hisbrother Phil Tourangeau(pronounced toronjo) fromVancouver. Don’t ask. I forget

any details of the match; both aregreat players and the crowd was sotransfixed by the matchup that wemainly were just watching runoutswaiting to see which sibling wouldprevail. I was urging the loser to haveto change his name. Theircredentials are about even;Stan is a pro and Phil is aMountie in the RCMP. skill. The pool level inBozeman, Montana is goingto go a lot higher thanks toyour inspiration. You are

definitely welcome inthe future and will

never have to payfor lodginghere. On thewomen’s sidewere alsosome greatm a t c h u p s ,but the funones arealways theo n e s

b e t w e e npeople who

drove up a long ways together. Goodfriends and car mates BonniePlowman and Julie Schultz met at apoint where the loser finished 5th.

Bonnie prevailed but mentioned theride home might be a little cold.Bonnie is the original grandmaster designation in Las Vegas,

given when the masters hadbitched long enough about having toplay her. Julie, I just met at thistournament and liked immediately. You tow also are great examples ofthe class top players should show.

Page 15December 2006 www.onthebreaknews.com

Another player new to thistournament is Jana Montour, thewinner. Jana, it was nice to meet you;you’re another great example toaspiring players. To wrap this up Iwould like to mention a local playerwho finished 4th for the second time.

It’s only amatter of timeuntil LoreenCarey winsit; she’s a

championin themak ing

and her showing in this field shouldgive her that final bit of confidenceand determination she needs to getthere. This tournament, althoughequal in status of luminaries, actuallywas not as strong a field as last year.I count the Vegas masters from APA,VNEA, and BCA each year. I think itshows the strength of the body of thefield. This year the men included 23masters and 5 intermediates, compared to 33 masters last year.On the other hand thewomen’s field was ourstrongest ever by far with10 masters and 7intermediates. Out of 44total players that’s anincredible density.Stan Tourangeau( r e m e m b e r ,torango) and ShaneVan Boening areboth on the IPT protour. I would like tosingle out somepeople withoutwhom we couldn’tsucceed. Ourtournamentcommittee of AimeeNeel, Candace Evans, country singer starAshlee Akey and BeckaLarkin ran the women’sSaturday and JennPavlovick, Cat Hansen,Chris Ballinger and CindyBarbula helped with thebracket drawing and

prelim work. As always, the manbehind the scenes, the Phantom ofthe Opera who scurries aroundmaking the food appear, all thearrangements exist, the drawing andrules, and most noticeably to theguests, the person who greets themat the door, prompting many timesthe question “... and who is that guywho always tells me how glad he isthat I came? ...” Dick Jones, themanager of the Eagles Club. I wouldalso like to thank the other bars

involved. TheCrossroads, Scoop Bar, Cat’s Paw,Crystal, Pour House and singling outAllison and the Molly Brown. Thanks,we couldn’t do it without you. Oursponsors, Spas and HomeRecreation has given us a generousgift certificate for four years now. TheLewis and Clark Motel and on theother side of town, the WesternHeritage Inn are ouraccommodations. A huge thanks toour main sponsors, Shawn and theboys at Ressler Chevrolet and JeffFlatness at Rocky Mountain Vending. Thanks, this is your tournament. Iwould also like to thank a friend ofmine, Cheese Akerlow, and take thisopportunity to kiss up to him. Cheesewas the inspiration for this piece, giving me an opportunity for somepublicity for this tournament. Ourminds seem to click togetherwhen we brainstorm (with what

we have left in brain cells). The Classic was not alwaysa tournament of 165 players. We started in t h e

y e a r2000 with

49 players. I hadbeen told by literally

everyone that a tournamentcould not draw 40-someplayers in Bozeman, especially a $50 one. They

might have been right. I alsowanted to hold it on Thanksgivingweekend, contending that realpool players would come indroves. We didn’t have awomen’s side because it wasobvious that women are tied upat that time and would never

come.My primary motivationwas to bring world-classplayers to Bozeman for my

entertainment, the excitement itwould bring, and to show localplayers how the game could beplayed. This would continue theeducation started by Helena playersJeff Boucherand DanHamper, whoc a m ereligiously oncea week in the90’s to take ourmoney andagain, showus how thegame could be

played. Thesetwo playersraised the level of local pool andinspired the achievements recentlygained by so many of our players. Afriend of mine who owns the CrystalBar going only by the name ofGrunch (THE Grunch) agreed to add$50 a week so I could charge locals$10 and get each into the Classic at$50. What few know is in that firstClassic, 42 of the 49 players werelocals who got in by way of theCrystal qualifiers. We drew exactly7 players from out of town and threebig names, Bob Flores, StanTourangeau and the eventual winnerJeff Boucher. Three women playedin the tournament with Jane BartramPlant finishing the highest.I was immediately besieged bywomen demanding to know why Ihadn’t held a women’s field. Startingin 2001 we held men and women. The winner of Classic 2 was Edwin

Montal of Calgary and Jane wonthe first official women’s

bracket. She wonagain in 2002. I

wouldn’t wantyou to get theidea she wonbecause ofweak fields; in

1993 she wonboth the VNEA

Nationals 8-ball and9-ball in Las Vegas. Each year our sizeand strength of fieldincreased, withmany interesting

entries from afar. I alwaystry to get some spectacularnames to come. This year three-timeJunior National Champion JustinBergman was supposed to come, but the 19-year-old was busy inAustralia in a championship event. Iwould like to thank local cue-maker

(2006 Results continued on page 33)

Keith Erickson, who gives us a cueeach year. The winner this year ofthe free $1,000 cue is Kevin Davisof Idaho Falls. People have finallystarted to recognize Keith’s fine cues

and jump cues. Our statechampion uses a previousClassic cue by Erickson. Ourtotal money was $19,635($18,635 cash+ $1,000 cue

stick). The second chancetournaments were won

by Kevin Cardinaland Jenn

Pavlovick. Next year we hope toincrease the added money and bringin an even more spectacular field, but we also need to address theproblem of how large a field we canhandle. Hope many of you readingthis will come next year. It’s alwaysthe weekend of Thanksgiving in theStates ... you know, when no one inhis right mind would come.

A TOUCH OF CLASS - WESTERN BCA’S NINTH ANNUAL REGIONAL 9-BALL TOURNAMENT

I have ever seen at the tournaments. The referees were a seasoned crewand the best we have ever had.Probably the biggest change was thelayout of the tables and everyoneseemed to be happy with thechange. By putting the brackets inthe hallway, a lot of the congestionwas eliminated and it made it somuch easier to get around the room.Although I am not a great fan of adress code, I have to admit that itdid make the room look a lotclassier. I hope we can always havetournaments where the class, styleand skill of the players are the talkof the tournament. And let’s notforget the weather, except for onerainy morning the days at the beachwere sunny, warm and wonderful.Congratulations to the winners andto the non-winners like me. Just

Just

A Tournament was ran last Saturday the 18th atJR’s Steakhouse in Marysville, WA.We had a Memorial Tournament for a guy who

has beenan icon inthe poolcommunityfor over 30years. Theman I amspeakingof wasRay Lundew h op a s s e daway onJune 19th,2006.Ray was ag r e a t

ambassador of billiards. He was very involved inthe APA and the BCA, reaching the Nationals withseveral teams. Ray was well known by most poolplayers in the West Coast. We had 32 playersshow up for this tournament as most of them werespecial invites. We wanted to have most of Ray’sclosest friends (Pool Players) be involved in this1st Annual Tournament. We shared the companyof some great pool players like Mike Stephens andLarry Nelson. It was a great turnout as we cut thefield to 32 players. We had several other playerswho wanted to play and we just did not have thetime to run more than a 32 bracket board in oneday. We will most likely have a two day tourneynext year. Ray’s Family showed up for the eventand talked with all ray’s friends, which broughttears to their eye’s more than once. For the mostpart the family was all smiles knowing that Raywas so appreciated by all. It was my honor to run

this tournament in Ray’s name along with mypartner Alisha Rogers. Alisha was close to thefamily and did a large part of organizing this event. The tournament was 8-ball Vegas rules race to 2on both sides. The tournament started at 1:00 pmand was finished at 9:00pm. We had some really

good matchesas MikeStephens andLarry Nelsonwere onopposite sidesof the board.Everyone wasthinking thatthey wouldmeet in thefinals as theybothwere winningmatches 2-0. Itseamed like

they were breaking and running most of theirracks. As most tournaments proceed forward youalways have someone playing great and lookingfor an upset. There were two people on this daywho were looking to win, Frank McMurtry and BradHornshaw. Once we were down to the final 8players we had Larry Nelson get upset by JobyWilliams 2-1 and then Frank McMurtry beat JobyWilliams 2-1 to face the looser of the point match.Mike Stephens and Brad Hornshaw played forthe point as Brad beat Mike 2-1. Mike Stephenstook out Frank 2-0 as it looked like he really wantedanother chance at Brad. The final match wastense as Mike Stephenstook the first set 2-1. The final set was a battle ofsafe play as they ended up 1-1 and Mike had achance to close out the match when he got

hooked and played a safe. Brad had a shot andmade a 90 degree cut on the 8-ball to the sidepocket for the win. Itwas an awesomeshot with thetourney on the line,if he missed, itwould have beenMike’s game. Onthis day it was allBrad Hornshaw. Henever lost amatch!!!The tournament feewas a $10.00 entryfee with half going towards a donation to Ray’s

family as they werein need of somemoney to purchaseRay’s Headstone. We felt it would begreat if we couldhelp out with thecost. We haddonation jars aroundthe bar and peopledonated in largeamounts. Weraised over $800.00

for Ray’s family. The APA donated a very niceMcDermott pool cue for our raffle and Chuck fromJR’s Steakhouse chipped in $200.00. I would liketo thank all who played and donated to a greatman.1st $150 Brad Hornshaw2nd $75 Mike Stephens3rd $40 Frank McMurtry4th $30 Joby Williams5th $30 Robert Synder

Joan Stroud, owner of the Log CabinPub & Eatery in Sumner, WA,passed away on October 26th froma heart attack. For many people that play pool in theAmerican Poolplayers Association(APA) and Billiard Congress ofAmerica (BCA), this face will besorely missed.

A kind andunselfish person, she was always

Story by: Mike Jensen

Young gun Arlo Walsman “shot em down” at the monthly tournament inLongview. It was just a matter of time before the twenty-year-old Walsman got to thetop of the winner circle. Arlo is a new, young talent that we will be seeing atthe top of tournaments for years to come. He plays in our nine balltournaments on Friday night and many times has had to leave with thirdplace money because of the age laws. Everyone under twenty-one mustleave the pool hall at eleven PM. because alcohol is served. Arlo has had toleave more than once and take a lesser spot than he probably would haveif he were able to finish to the end. He is a nice young man who plays bythe rules and treats everyone with respect. He is gracious in winning andlosing and the type of person that everyone wants in their establishment. The Cadillac Island Casino congratulates Arlo on his 1st place finish.Arlo and James Davee were the last two on the winner side, with Arlopulling out the win over James. James then defeated Glenn Atwell in a hillhill win to play Arlo again. James would have to beat Arlo twice in a race tonine, but Arlo had other ideas and won the first set to take the tournament.James Davee had wins over Bob Ohashi, Eddie Lau, Eddie Carrido, TroyVanWinkle and Glenn Atwell for a strong second place finish. Thank youJames for coming to Longview.
