S o, you want to drive through the woods fast and get

to your friends at you secret shing hole somewhere in

the forest. Forget the pickup truck. A horse would have

done better. Take the rally ready Volkswagen Golf GTi

instead. Oh... ok. My bad. This is not a car magazine.

Series: Veracity Pro

Model: VERPC 602 MH A

Length: 6’

Lure Wt.: 1/4-1oz.

Line Wt.: 10-20lb

Confguration: 2 piecesWhat I am getting at is this; while it may be ne

and dandy to bring the old favourite tough looking,

thick, muscular, but oppy breglass rod to battle

the 10kg plus giant snakeheads (toman), a 30 ton

carbon graphite rod will do much better as it is stiff-

er with better rebound power. One of them is the

 Abu Garcia Veracity Pro.

The Veracity Pro comes in red. Not just any normal

kind of red. It comes in blood red. It looks like a long

vial of blood, perhaps making in the perfect rod for

vampires. For those of you who faint at the sight of

blood, this rod may very well be your kryptonite.

Sinister In Red

Jokes aside, the Veracity Pro looks good. Not to

ashy. Not too much bling. Just nice in my opinion.

It comes with good quality EVA grips, black metal

(not a music genre) butt end cap, blood red painted

reel seat, with black and silver thread windings.

Completing the package are high quality compo-

nents from Fuji. They include Fuji’s tangle free guide

system of which allows for better casting distances

and provides less friction between line and guides

thus reducing line wear.

Quality Components

Another important component is the reel seat. The

Veracity Pro comes tted with Fuji reel seat that

holds the reel securely in place. If you have encoun-

tered reels going loose mid way through a ght with

a big sh you will understand the need for a high

quality reel seat.

Reel: Abu Garcia Revo STX

Line: Berkley Fireline

Poundage: 20lb

Leader: Berkley Trilene Big Game 40lb

Back at our lab we put the Veracity Pro through the

pressure test with 20lb being the target. Securing

the line to an anchor, we pulled the rod backwards

keeping the angle at about 45 degrees, tightening

the drag, reeling in line, and pulling again until we

thing got scary. The rod touched 20.7lb.

Lab Test

Thus far the Veracity Pro has proven to hit the marks.

It does come with good quality Fuji components, it

looks sinisterly nice, and it has decent power. How-

ever, we were unable to have it tested in the eld for

now. We’ll stay tuned for part 2 in the next issue.

OR Craft Code Lures

Test Drives Philemon Foo

When it comes to catching sh, the lure you use and

how you use it is important. You may have good rods,

uper smooth reels, tough and almost invisible lines, and

your sh nder is beeping like a cheap broken car alarm;

but without a good lure, your chances of catching any sh

would be really low.

Replicating Good Lures

Good lures catch sh and it is no secret that they

get replicated. Makes sense right? Who on earth

would want to replicate a lure that does not catch

sh? Thus comes the OR Craft Code lures. The OR

Craft Code lures are a replica of the M Blue Code

lures (or could it be M Blues Code).

Nice Swimmer

With a few Code lures in our hands we decided to

take them swimming at a nearby pond. Using light

tackle we got the code ying out to very good dis-

tances. They cast easy and well. They swim really

well to with a tight wiggle.

Would Fish Eat Them?

We may like the way it swims but what about the

sh? Twitching them just outside some underwater

weeds did the trick. Pissed of peacock bass had a

eld day hitting the Code. Or was it the Code hav -

ing a eld day taking hits from the peacock bass...

Hmm, whatever. The code still won.

Summary

Yes, we all want lures that catch sh and good

branded lures cost a bomb. Well, if you don’t mind

using replicas then the OR Craft Code is a lure to

consider. It swims well. It has proven itself to be a

lure that shes can’t stand and want to hit. And it is

“pocket safe.”

The Classic Bluewater F120 lures are well built with good

cosmetics. The body is heavy walled and they are double

welded together for extra strength. They are tted with a

T he Classic Bluewater F120 lures were launched

last month here in Malaysia. These Australian lures

are made for saltwater shing being famed straight

swimming high speed trolling lures. Yippee! since it

is a proven saltwater lure we decided to take it out of

its environment.

Quality Components

The Classic Bluewater F120 lures are tted with 3X strong

Permasteel treble hooks by VMC. These hooks ensure

durability and the much needed strength especially since

it is a saltwater trolling lure of which is targeted to catch

hard ghting shes. They also come with Superex HD

Stainless steel split rings.

Field Test

Since it was monsoon we decided to test it with fresh-

water predators. These lures are made for trolling and

thus they do not score high points for casting. However,

they swim really well holding tight and straight. Yes, they

catch sh too.

Verdict

The Classic Bluewater F120 lures are good performers.

They swim fast and tight when trolled. They swim straight

too. Although they are made for saltwater trolling, fresh-

water predators take them too.

E ver handled a power tool such as drill? A normal

drill can only do so much. For more power a ham-

mer drill will make the DIY guy drool. The Revo Toro

S is more like a jack hammer. What’s the difference

you may ask. Well, drill make holes. Jack hammers

demolishes surfaces.

The Revo Toro S could very well get featured in Star

Wars. It looks like a reel the Storm Troopers would use. It

comes with pearly white side plates and black, well, ev-

erything else. It is larger than your average bait casting

reel and when it sits on your hands, it looks somewhat

like a big robotic frog (meant in a nice way).

Pearly White

It may look cute (hence the big robotic frog state-

ment). When you turn the handle it feels smooth.

But when you put it into battle mode, the jack ham-

mer sleeping inside comes to life and you feel like

you’re riding one heck of a bull. The drag is power-

ful. Abu Garcia claims 25lb.

Power House

Low prole reels do have limits. And when anglers

want low prole reels to do more, something has got

to change. Abu Garcia did so by increasing the size

of the reel and everything else inside. This gives us

a reel with line capacity and power of larger round

reels but in a smaller package.

Why Such A Reel?

What kind of a monster would you want to battle with?

Well, for freshwater application the giant snakehead

comes to mind. No I am not talking about those lit-

tle 10kg brutes. I am talking perhaps 18kg upwards

nuclear submarine types that could easily drag you

into the snags or bust your low prole baitcasting

reel.

Looking For A Fight?

It certainly would work well with saltwater brutes the

likes of sailsh, trevallies, etc. I wouldn’t call this

reel a gladiator slayer. No, not this. For that, it has

a brother. However, the Revo Toro S certainly can

and will subdue many a gladiator.

Salty Gladiators?

nected together either through sewing, gluing, or hot

pressing. Whichever method chosen, it is essential

for the seams to be sealed in order to be waterproofed.

The RodFord RFC dry bags come with sealed seams.

W hen it comes to Pueger, I feel that if a reel

manufacturer were to make a reel lighter than theirs,

they get pissed off and get down to making another

lighter reel in the said reel class. Here comes the

new Pueger Supreme XT and it is the lightest reel in

its class.

The new Supreme XT is certainly a good looking reel.

It comes in a dark grey body and rotor that looks some-

what metallic. Maybe it is. My eyesight has wasn’t

what it was. It also has gun metal chromed rotor cov-

ers on its rotor, and areas of the body.

Good Looking

The spool comes ported and has nice looking me-

tallic orange lining that gives it a somewhat futuris-

tic look. The spool is also braid ready which means

that backing line need not be used with braided lines.

The spool comes with three rubber linings that allows

braided lines to be held in place.

Nice Orange Lining

The handle comes with a sporty carbon bre shaft

that looks good and saves on weight. The handle it-

self is EVA supported by metallic orange washer and

screw cover. While the design may not be new it still

looks good especially with the metallic orange lining

and gun metal colours.

The magnesium body of the new Supreme XT is rigid

especially at the reel foot area. No one likes a reel that

exes during the battle with a brute. Reel foot exing

not only makes ghting the sh uncomfortable. It also

reduces one’s condence; not what you want during

the ght of your life.

The rotor is made of magnesium too just like the body,

of which helps with the weight reduction. Unlike the

body, the rotor does have a little bit of ex. In terms

of smoothness, the rotor rotates smoothly and is well

balanced.

Well DEsigned Ro Tor

The new Supreme XT comes with sealed carbon bre

drag. Sealed drags protects the drag from dirt that are

in the water such as little particles from wood, vegeta-

tion, etc. It also gives protection from corrosive salt-

water. They come with a max drag of 8lb, 10lb, 12lb,

and 14 lb depending on model.

C rankbaits come either with a bill of which is also

called a lip, or they come without one. In this article

we will discuss about the bill or the lip of which plays a

very signicant role in the action if the lure..

Lure Fishing BasicsB i l l O r L i p Part 3

M anip ul a tin g H ydr od yn ami c s

One of the reasons for lures to have a bill is to use

the resistance of water to manipulate the lure’s actions.

Imagine standing in a pool and with your palm open

and ngers close, push the water with your hands. At

certain angles the resistance become either lighter or

higher. This helps manipulate the lure’s actions.

93

Page 48: The Asian Angler - January 2016 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

B i g O r  S ma l l

You’ll notice that lures come with bills of various sizes.

Some a big almost half the size of the lure and some

are smaller. The bigger the surface of the bill the higher

the resistance to water. Why the difference in sizes?

When the lure is being cranked, a downward force is

created. This force brings the lure down (called dive).

The bigger the bill the deeper the dive.

 B i l l  A n g l e s

Another thing you will notice is that certain lures come

with the bill set at a different angle. Some are set hori-

zontal to the lure. Some are set somewhat at a 45 de-

grees angle. and some are about 90 degrees. Changing

the angle affects the direction of which the downward

force comes from. This in turn helps with stabilizing the

lure, and gives the desired action.

95

Page 49: The Asian Angler - January 2016 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

S h a p e s

These bills come in various shapes. However, in gen-

eral there are two main shapes and they are the round

bill and the square bill.

R ounded

Bills

One of the more common bill shapes is the rounded bill.

They have a larger surface and a thus a higher down

force. They are mainly used with deep diving lures.

These lures scrap the bottom creating commotion and

thus gets a whacked by a pissed off predator. There are

also round bills for shallow swimming lures.

97

Page 50: The Asian Angler - January 2016 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

7/25/2019 The Asian Angler - January 2016 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/the-asian-angler-january-2016-digital-issue-malaysia-english 50/80

S q u a r e  B i l l s

Another type of bill is the square bill. Square bills have a

smaller surface and they normally run shallow. Square

bills are good at deecting snags but this does not mean

that it is snag free. When they hit a snag they sort of

bounce off it or get deected off it.

 O t h e r  S h a p e s

Other bills are the cofn bill. While Square bills have

2 edges, cofn bills have 4 edges resembling cofns

used by vampires as shown in vampire movies. They

work pretty much the same as square bills. And there

is the triangular bill which allows the lure to be shed

slowly somewhat like smaller round bills.

99

Page 51: The Asian Angler - January 2016 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

T o  N o t e

What bill size, length, or design you choose to use is

generally determined by how deep or shallow you want

to sh. The action will mainly be determined by the de-

sign of the lure. So the next time you shop for lures

or choose lures for a trip, do give these words a little

thought. Cheers...

W hen it comes to hooks the choices are a plenty

and can get quite confusing. Hooks come in various

forms or types for a host of different purposes. With

this issue let us take a look at some of the types of

hooks that are used with soft baits.

Al l   Ab o u t  H

o o k s :

P  ar t  3

HOokTyp

esUnlike what the name suggests, worm hooks are not

really made to hook real worms. You could but they are

designed to rig soft plastic worm baits. They can also

be used to rig soft plastic sh such as minnows that are

slim but still mainly used for worms.

Worm hook

The shank of the worm hook is bent somewhat like the

hand crank of a car jack. They are bent that way to rig

soft plastic worms properly without deforming the them.

T h e  B e n t

Sh  an k

This is done by inserting the hook into the soft plastic

worm somewhat the length of the shank before the rst

bent of which is right after the eye of the hook. The hook

exits the bottom front of the worm and is reinserted into

the worm again at the body section the length of the

hook shank.

The soft plastic worms and worm hooks are used in

quite a few types of rigs such as Texas Rig, Tex-posed

Rig (with hook point exposed), and Carolina Rig.

The design of the general soft bait hooks or Carolina Rig

hooks are somewhat like the worm hooks with the bent

sank of which looks like the hand crank of a car jack.

The difference between the general soft bait hooks and

worm hooks is that the width of the gap. The gap of the

general soft bait hooks is wider.

H o o k s   /

R i g  H o o k s

The shank of the general soft bait hook is rounded after

the bent section at the eye of the hook. The shank then

curves into the bent and goes all the way to the point.

Due to the rounded or curved shank the gap between

the hook point and the shank is wider.

The general soft bait hooks are used for all sorts of soft

baits from worms to shes to frogs, etc. The way of us-

ing them is similar to that of the worm hook but they can

be used to rig up thicker soft baits. The soft baits are

usually rigged weedless.

Well, if you are new to soft bait shing, you now know

what hooks to get and how to use them. So go out there

and catch lots of sh.

Get Your Kids FishingAn Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine

F ishing is a very healthy sport. As anglers we enjoy resh air, weexperience nature, we improveour analytical skills, we absorb

vitamins rom the sun, we expendour minds, we learn about theenvironment, etc.

Tere are so many benefits tofishing and we should reduce ourkids addiction to video games,

computer games, playing withmobile devices, etc. We should getthem to interact more with ourenvironment and teach them athing or two about lie and livinglie.

With this in mind we hope toencourage you to take your kid(s)fishing and have dedicated a sec-tion o our magazine to JuniorAnglers.

Year End Fishing

H ello everyone!

ime really ies. In the blink of an eye, the end of 2015

omes and 2016 arrives. 2015 has been great for me. I

roke my personal Striped Snakehead record 3 times this

ear. Here is my second personal record snakehead that

ook the 2.4” Berkley Powerbait Saltwater Slinky Shad.

By Amirul Iran

It took me around 20 minutes to fool this sh with mul-

tiple lures. After switching to the Slinky Shad, it was nally

fooled and landed. This sh was hanging around the same

area for about 2 weeks. As the monsoon season iss begin-

ning, snakeheads will start to hang in grass for breeding.

125

This juvenile snakehead was caught on a rubber frog.

Just a few minutes earlier I lost a bigger one because I

did not pay attention to my frog. Paying attention to your

frog is important when shing with rubber frogs to en-

sure perfect hookset.

Here is my younger brother with a solid snakehead

on the Zman MinnowZ in space guppy. The akes

really work well for snakeheads especially when it is

sunny. From our experimenting we have found out

that lures with akes tend to get more bites as com-

pared to lures without akes.

Here is my youngest brother with a juvenile Striped

Snakehead on a 2” black Berkley Powergrub. We

searched for snakeheads by observing scattering

groups of baitsh and concentrating casts in areas

where baitsh congregate.

Here is a snakehead caught by my younger brother on the

Zman MinnowZ. Notice the emerald blue ventral ns. The

colours of the snakeheads are beautiful now as it is their

breeding season.

The Berkley Powerbait T-Tail Minnow rigged on an un-

der spin worked well to fool this little snakehead and a

few more that managed to shake the hook. The blade

adds ash and vibration, perfect to get snakeheads to

bite when conditions are tough.

Here is my latest personal record snakehead at 46cm and

780 grams. It gave a powerful ght but I managed to coun-

ter it with the Surecatch D-Legend rod and the new Abu

Garcia Promax 3.The Promax 3 handled long casts and it’s

high ratio helped to get the sh out of cover quickly.

Released to grow and I hope I will be able to catch

it again. 2015 has been an awesome year. I have

achieved most of my goals, except catching a Peacock

Bass. I am also happy to see more junior anglers on

social media. I know that there are many more junior

anglers out there. If you are a junior angler, keep up the

good work, never give up and always remember, safety

rst.

Bring Your Kids Fishing

Every child needs to spend time out-

doors. Fishing in a safe and educationalsport that both your child and you can

bond with..

Put away those tabs, iPhones, Androids,

and pick up a reel, rod, line, hook, and

sinker... Don’t forget some bait.

Happy Fishing.
