Test Drives Philemon Foo

W e tested the Abu Garcia Veracity Pro rods in ourlab back in January 2016. The casting one managed totake up to 20.7lb of pressure, of which is slightly aboveits rated 20lb test. Unfortunately we could not test it inthe eld as we had to return it in exchange for a spin -ning one.

Having a different rod in our hands we had no choicebut to get back to our lab and put it through the pres-sure test. The target this time is 30lb, as claimed onthe rod. So we secured a reel to it and secured theline to a ground anchor.

We took the Veracity Pro to our usual eld testingsite and had a go with the gladiators there. Thesebig dirty ghters would make minced meat or in thiscase “ berized” graphite out of lesser rods. There isno mercy once the bait is taken.

Field TestStart The Torture

We pushed the Veracity Pro up all the way to about24lb with a lot of worry as it was bending quite dan-gerously. We continued to push it until it touchedabout 26lb and then we decided to stop in fear itmay just break. It was 4lb shy of the targeted 30lb.

Not long later the Veracity Pro started to do a bendand the reel starting screaming. We were in for a

ght. I palmed the spool and proceeded to dragthe gladiator out away from the pillars, right into theopen space. The Veracity Pro has just enough pow-er to turn the heads of these gladiators.

Fish Management

For bait we used half a bait sh and cast it out intothe middle of the pond near the pillars of a restau-rant that is built out into the pond. The Veracity Procast pretty well allowing us to land our baits into thezone (where the gladiators hang out) over and overagain.

The Abu Garcia Veracity Pro looks sinisterly goodin blood red but what’s more important is that it is acapable rod. It may not be the lightest rod not themost sensitive rod, nor is it a hard ghting brute rod;but with the Fuji components and the price it comesin, it certainly is good value for money.

Test Thus Far

The Veracity Pro is not made to handle the bar-baric brute force type of shing. It is made for themore gentle sporty angler where the sh will haveits chance to run. While we managed to turn a fewheads, we did end up in the snags (pillars) too. Luck-ily we managed to get back out with sh intact.

Powerful Drag

The drag system on the Revo Toro S would give hardghting brutes a run for their money. It comes with a

Power stack Carbon Matrix drag system rated witha 25lb max drag. To see if it meets what it claims wetook it to our lab for a bit of torture.

Lab Test

Back at our lab we put it through the pressure test.Securing the line to a ground anchor we started toapply force. We got it easily to 20lb with the dragrunning smooth. We continued on to a high dragpressure almost maxing out the drag and we got itto 26.5lb with the drag still smooth.

Field Test

To see how it will performed we took it to Pulau Ja-rak (Jarak Island) for a test drive. The Revo TOROS is a reel for big things.

The Revo Toro S come with a magnetic braking sys-tem that has 8 magnets to help control the spool.Casting big lures or jigs are thus its forte. That beingsaid the Revo Toro S is a decent reel to cast withgiving decent distances with very good spool con-trol.

Fighting Abilities

We managed to bully a few shes dragging them outof their hiding place with relative ease. The largerround knob makes cranking and ghting more com -fortable. Although the shes caught are of decentweight, none of them managed to provide a ghtworthy of the Revo Toro S. The reel has proven it-self to be an overkill in this instance.

If you are in the market for a saltwater low pro lepowerhouse, the Abu Garcia Revo Toro S is one ofthe reels to consider. It is a good performer with lotsof power allowing you to do battle with con dence.

L ast issue we were mesmerized by the looksof the Abu Garcia Salty Stage BV8 baitcastingreel. We also took it to the lab and tortured it withthe pressure test where it did well reaching 8.3kg(1.3kg above the 7kg mark). It did so with a smoothdrag. This time let us see how it performed on thefeld.

Added Excitement

The Salty Stage BV8 comes with a line out alarm whichprovides for added excitement especially during the ght.We have often heard of the term screaming reels. TheSalty Stage BV8 screams during the ght (although notloud) and this is simply one of the best sounds to an an-gler. Few low pro le baitcasting reels come with this fea -ture.

Smooth Performer

Battle after battle went on smoothly with the Salty StageBV8 performing very well. We landed a few tough ghtinggladiators; mainly the red tail Amazon cat sh. The powerhandle and the bigger round made ghting these gladia -tors more comfortable with better grip. Before long theywere posing for a shot.

Verdict

The Abu Garcia Salty Stage BV8 baitcasting reel is a highperformance reel with lots to offer. It looks good, ghtswell, and the line out alarm is nice when the shes try tomake off with one’s bait. Good reel to think about shouldyou be considering low pro le baitcasting reel.

W hen it comes to shing for snakeheads bothbrown snakeheads (haruan) and giant snakeheads(toman), one of the lures frequently used a frogtype lures. A few months ago the Minnows Inc BeitoOriginal King Frog reached our shores.

The King Frog comes with skirts and two swimming ap-pendages that look like frog legs. This gives the illusionof an actual frog swimming making it more attractive topredator shes and thus getting them to strike.

When it comes to frog type lures, there are two types. Thehard bodied and the soft. The King Frog comes with ahard plastic body. The bene t of being hard bodied is thatit will not take in water like some of the soft bodied ones(except soft plastic baits) that will have to be squeezedout after a few cast of risk losing balance.

The King Frog comes equipped with strong Owner Dou-ble hooks that dangle at the back in between the ap-pendages and the skirt. These hooks are of high quality.The skirt and the appendages provide some “weedless-

ess” to it.

To test the effectiveness of the King Frog we gave a fewout to various feld testers to have them tested in vari -ous places in different parts of the country. As for us, weheaded out to a few nearby ponds and had a go withthem.

The King Frog cast well. It is well weighted, and beingompact it goes to good distances with an easy cast. Its one of those lures that are fun to cast. It is like you getatisfaction from a good cast almost all the time.

T h e Ac t i o n

The King Frog is a oating type lure. When twitched itmoves like a real frog moving in the water. When pausedit sits with its back underwater pointed downwards and itshead pointed upwards. Both its appendages hang aboutunderwater in a weird indecent sort of way while the skirtspoint upwards. Looks more like a dead frog oating.

Unfortunately I did not catch any sh shing in a heav -ly pressured pond near my place. I had two strikes but

unfortunately they didn’t stick. The other eld testers didbetter. Quite a few brown snakeheads and giant snake-heads were caught and landed.

A L o w P o i n t

While the King Frog did well in attracting shes and get -ting them to strike, one issue we noticed is that the hooksare a little thick and thus there were quite a number offailed hook-ups. Changing them to thinner hooks madethe difference.

Sum m a r y

Overall the Minnows Inc Beito Original King Frog is agood frog lure that shes nd attractive. Should you de -cide to add them to your lure collection do note that wehighly recommend changing the hooks to thinner diam-eter hooks for improved hook-ups.

D ecoy makes very good hooks and they haveproven themselves over and over. Still we wantedto know how good they are. Naturally the best thingto do will be to bring them to our lab and have themtested. We decided to test the Decoy Tracin’ Single31 OP lure hooks.

Before we did anything to these hooks we needed toknow if they are sharp to begin with. We ran it on ourplastic spoon to see if it will catch on. The Tracin’ Single31 hooks caught on easily proving that they are sharp.

Next we drowned them in freshwater for 24 hours. Mostf us would not leave our hooks in water for 24 hour

when we sh thus this test will be more than suf ciento see if they will rust in freshwater for the duration ofur shing. After 24 hours in the freshwater we foundo sign of rust. We ran it on our plastic spoon and theyaught on which means that the hooks are still sharp.

Next we drowned them in saltwater for 24 hours to see if

they would be able to go on for at least 24 hours withoutrusting in this corrosive solution. After 24 hours we re-moved them from the saltwater solution and inspectedthem. No signs of rust.

Next we just had to run them on our plastic spoon to seeif they are still sharp. No point shing with a blunt hookright? These hooks caught onto the plastic spoon whichmeans that they remained sharp even after drowningthem in saltwater for 24 hours.

We have found the Decoy Tracin’ Single Hooks to begood hooks. They are indeed quality hooks and theyhave proven themselves in our lab in both salt and fresh-water environments as well as the sharpness test. If youare in the market for quality lure hooks, the Decoy Tra-cin’ Single Hooks can be considered.

O ver the past 3 issues we discussed about hardlures, mainly crankbaits and their characteristics, aswell as how they work. Before we actually go into sh -ing them (lure playing techniques), let us rst look intopreparing them.

Before Casting

Before you cast out your lure, the rst thing that youshould do is to ensure that your lure swims right. Withthis I mean the direction of which it swims to. You wantyour lure to be swimming in a straight line. It will wobbleor shimmer while it is being cranked but you want itcoming back in a straight line.

Another thing you will notice is that certain lures comewith the bill set at a different angle. Some are set hori-zontal to the lure. Some are set somewhat at a 45 de-grees angle. and some are about 90 degrees. Changingthe angle affects the direction of which the downwardforce comes from. This in turn helps with stabilizing thelure, and gives the desired action.

Testing Your Lures

Test your lure by casting it out and cranking it back in.If it swims off in one direction (left or right), it needs tobe adjusted. A lure that swims off in one direction otherthan in a straight line will prove to be dif cult to manipu -late. They are pretty darn ineffective and very seldomcatch sh.

Adjusting The Lure

You can adjust your lure’s swim direction by adjustingthe towing point (the loop where your line is securedto). All you need is a pair of pliers. My recommendationis to use a square type pliers instead of the long noseones. The square type offers a better more con dentgrip, to me at least.

The wobble of the lure can be adjusted but rst, a noteof caution. With plastic lures, doing such adjustmentsmay not work and could damage the lure if you are notcareful. Thus I do not recommend doing so on plasticlures. They work on wooden lures.

Be Careful

If your lure swims to the right, bend the towing pointvery slightly to the left. If it swims to the left, bend thetowing point to the right slightly. Cast your lure out andcrank it back again. If it still does not swim right, adjustthe towing point again very slightly. Cast the lure outagain and crank it back. Adjust the towing point untilyou get the lure swimming back to you in a straight line.

Adjusting TheAction

Most modern lures will not require such adjustmentsto their action as they are well adjusted in the factoriesbefore they are packed. These lures have been tunedfor a certain action and will swim well (most of the time).Doing adjustments to them may very well damage them.

The action of the lure can be tuned by bending the tow-ing point upwards or downwards. Bending the towingpoint upwards gives the lure a shimmy type action.Bending downwards gives it a slow wobble.

Some lures seem to be un-adjustable. No matter howyou adjust them they will not swim right. Well, somelures are just plain lousy. They came manufacturedbadly. Best thing to do with these lures is to remove thehooks, attached a key chain ring to the towing point andyou’ve got yourself a new key chain that tells everyoneyou’re an angler.

Te Asian Angler

T reble hooks are basically three hooks attached toone. Some people call them triple hooks but the actualterm for it is treble hooks or trebles for short. The rea-son why some call them triple hooks could be becausethey are actually three hooks attached to one.

Treble hooks are generally used with lures, jigs, spoons,spinners, etc. The use of treble hooks stems from thebelieve that they increase the chance of hooking up afsh thus why they are popular. Well, they do but theyalso do come with a few disadvantages especially withfshes that have tough jaws.

When it comes to lures, most of them come with treblehooks. These days more anglers are opting for singlehooks, exchanging them with the trebles that originallycomes with the lures that they buy. The normal singlehooks used for bottom shing are not recommended tobe used with lures. For lures there are the single lurehooks.

Treble hooks come in various designs. There are theshort shank and long shank ones. They also come withvarious types of bends including the usual roundedbend, the limerick bend, inline bend, etc. There are alsothe wide gape and narrow gape types.

Single hooks made for lures come with a larger hookeye. Some come with hook eyes that are not only largerbut also opened, allowing one to just slot the lure’s ringinto it, and then clamping the eye close. Bottom shingsingle hooks have smaller eyes that will t too rigidly onthe ring.

For one they do causemore damage to a shes mouth, and they can be bentopened as well as crushed by the powerful jaws ofcertain shes. Single hooks do not have such issues.Single hooks have a lower chance of getting snaggedwhen shing around snags as compared to trebles.

Fishing Fun January

H ello everyone!

hope the month of January has been a good start for ev-ryone. For me,it has been a bit tough, because of the hot

weather. Fish were very passive throughout the day andhe only chance to get a decent bite is shing at rst light.his snakehead is my rst catch of 2016,on a pop frogopped slowly beside some grass.

This is my second snakehead for 2016.It hit this 7cm cloneof the Rapala Shallow Shad Rap on my last cast. Look atthe size of the lure compared to its head. This sh wasvery aggressive and fought hard.

The Redhead colour seems to be effective for haruanshere, probably because they haven’t seen it before.

This snakehead also came on the same clone lure inthe evening. I saw this snakehead resting on a weedbed, and a slow retrieve with a long pause managed toget the attention of this snakehead and another one aswell. Both of them tried to take the lure, but this one gotit rst. The Surecatch D-Legend rod helped to lift the

sh out of the water quickly before it made it to somestructure.

Here is a juvenile snakehead caught on a Zman 3”Minnowz by my younger brother. This little snake-head was very greedy and it fought very hard aswell.

Here is another juvenile caught on a spinnerbait with a2” Berkley Powerbait Powergrub as a trailer. The ashand vibration managed to trigger bites from juvenilesnakeheads.

This juvenile snakehead was caught on the 3.8” BerkleyPowerbait Saltwater Slinky Shad. I saw it rising in front ofme with another snakehead, and I tried fshing it slowly.This fsh hit the Slinky Shad so hard that I thought it was abig snakehead.

The 2” Berkley Powerbait Swim Shad in Shad colour.Perfect colour to match the hatch at my favourite spot.I’m sure it will match natural colours in other locationsas well. I had a few misses from juvenile snakeheadson this little swimbait.

Here is a juvenile Tinfoil Barb/Lampam, taken on a popperwith some bread on the trebles .The Tinfoil Barbs in thearea were very sensitive, and chumming with some breadto create a feeding frenzy was the only way to get them tohit my popper with bread. For the lure purist, this may notsit well but sometimes one need to be creative.

This Striped Snakehead is protecting it’s fry. I spotteda few snakeheads hanging around this shallow areawhich is packed with weeds. It is a good spot to targetwith small soft plastics.

I hope 2016 will continue to go on very well for every-one.
