WHY USE SUPERLINES?

SUPER STRONG, THIN AND SENSITIVE!

In their search for the best fishing line, many anglers have discovered the benefits of amazingly thin, super-strong superlines.

What Are Superlines?

Berkley-branded lines are made from the highest grade Dyneema™ in the industry, a gel-spun polyethylene that is 15 times stronger than steel by weight. As a result, Berkley superlines offer zero stretch at typical fishing loads, plus low memory and, thanks to incredibly high tensile strength, remarkably thin line diameters.

Superlines

Manufacturers use a variety of techniques to join Dyneema fibers to form polyethylene fishing line. For example, Berkley FireLine is thermally bonded into a tough, smooth-casting line; Berkley Trilene Braid is woven into an extremely strong braid through a proprietary method giving it the very best radial construction; and Berkley NanoFil is molecularly linked to form a unifilament that’s thinner and stronger than any other superline.

Benefits

Sensitivity—Thanks to its zero stretch, superline transmits information from your lure better than any other type of fishing line. You can feel light bites, when your lure ticks bottom, and tell if weeds or other debris has fouled your presentation.

Thin Diameter—This is undeniably the best fishing line in terms of tensile strength, which refers to breakload per diameter. Since a 30-pound superline may have the same diameter as 12-pound premium nylon monofilament, you can downsize diameter without sacrificing strength. Alternately, you may also choose to put the odds in your favor by using a heavier pound line without sacrificing your ability to cast long distances.

Thinner line diameter offers multiple benefits. Because there’s less drag in the water, it allows lures like crankbaits to run deeper on the same breakstrength superline as mono, with less letback. This also allows medium-diving lures to become deep runners, without the hard-to-reel resistance of an oversize lip—a key consideration during marathon casting sessions. This same principle of less drag also lends itself well to current applications as there is minimal resistance against the line allowing for more natural presentations. Second, super-thin fishing line allows a stealthier presentation when fish are finicky or inactive. Finally, thin lines fuel longer casts—and a thin, round superline like Berkley NanoFil casts a country mile, even with light lures. Longer casts also work in the shore anglers favor allowing virtually unreachable areas to be fished.

Fighting Abilities—Superline slices through vegetation like a knife, which is a big benefit when you’re hauling big bass and other trophy fish from heavy cover. Its zero stretch and amazing strength also help horse fish from harm’s way in a hurry.

Abrasion Resistance—Due to their exceptionally thin diameter, not all superlines stand up as well to abrasion. But some are exceptionally tough, such as Berkley FireLine and Trilene Braid.

Flotation—Unlike slow-sinking mono and fast-falling fluoro, superline floats. This makes it a great choice for topwater lures such as artificial frogs.

Tradeoffs

Shock Strength—Nylon monofilament offers superb shock strength, while fluorocarbon ranks in the middle and superlines have the poorest ability to absorb sudden impacts such as a hard hookset or violent headshake. The good news is, you can compensate by loosening your drag setting, using a softer rod, or adding a mono shock leader to the end of the mainline.

High Visibility—With the exception of translucent Berkley FireLine Fused Crystal, superlines lack the hard-to-see qualities of low-vis nylon monofilament and fluorocarbon. However, adding a mono or nearly invisible fluoro leader to superline mainline can provide the best of both worlds.

Knot Issues—Not every knot holds superline like they do monofilament. Trusted knots like the Palomar Knot work well, but it’s best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. For connecting superline to leader material, a three-turn Surgeon’s Knot or uni to uni knot are great options.

Ease Of Use—Superline has very little to no spool memory and does not untwist like mono, which makes lines like NanoFil and FireLine fantastic for spinning reels. However, it’s not forgiving in terms of stretch or haphazard knot-tying, and when you get a backlash, it’s really a backlash. But by making adjustments such as loosening your drag, tempering your hooksets and tying carefully, superline is a great tool for presentations where strength and sensitivity are paramount.

Fading Out—Colored superlines suffered fading issues in the past, but improved manufacturing has helped many lines keep their color longer. Berkley is leading this charge utilizing research and testing to provide better color retention properties than ever before.

Which Superline, When?

Berkley FireLine Fused Crystal—The best fishing line when you need the stealth of a translucent mainline (like mono) plus the benefits of superline.

Berkley FireLine Fused Original—Recent improvements have made this thermally fused powerhouse stronger, more abrasion resistant, smoother handling and longer casting. Ideal for spinning tackle.

Berkley NanoFil—The thinnest, strongest, longest-casting superline on the block. Perfect for a variety of presentations on spinning gear, especially when long-range casts are key.

DID YOU KNOW?Rod selection is important with any fishing line, and superline is no exception. Unless you need to horse big fish out of nasty cover, fast, choosing a softer action rod when fishing superline will help avoid tearing the hooks out of the fish’s mouth, or breaking fluoro or monofilament leaders.

My fellow anglers and friends,

Being a magazine owner and editor I get asked all sorts of questi-ons. One of them is why I do most of my field tests at commerci-al fishing ponds instead as they don’t represent the real world of fishing. Valid question this is and this is why.

Field testing products out at sea or in a natural lake may be the real deal but we may not get accurate results since not all trips that cost a lot money yield results. Being a free magazine we do not have the liberty to spend and not get results of which simply means catching sizable fishes and have the tackle (being tested) tortured.

This is why we field test often at commercial fishing ponds where fishes are large enough to put products through the test. What we basically want to find out is how these products react depending on the various specifications that the manufacturer or brands advertise as well as to see if the general basic conditions are met. Thus it makes more sense to test them at commercial fishing ponds.

This is not to say that we do not test products in natural environments. We do and we do often as well but there are trips that end up without results or even the opportunity to test products as the fishes may not be cooperative or may not be large enough to give any form of challenge.

Well, in the motoring industry while cars are tested on public roads they are tested at test tracks too such as the famous Nürburgring in Germany. The reason is that the real world may not present enough opportunities to test certain things and thus a test track is needed. The same thing goes to fishing.

Welcome to the world of Major Stix rods, a series of rods that marches in the light of the military. The Major Stix rods carry a logo that I would associate to the air forces, with models following mili-tary ranks. This time round we tested a model called The Colonel.

The Colonel follows the styling of American bass rods with mus-cular butt sections tapering down towards the tip with a 65%-70% backbone. It has loads of power stored up in its blank of which gives superb fish battling control over to the angler.

Camo HandlesThe Colonel comes battle ready with orange camouflage handles. Take a closer look and you will two metallic red rings one of which comes with the brand (series) on it for a little bit of subtle bling. The rear EVA handles are contoured to give one a better grip.

Should you need to stop a fish from swim-ming into the snags The Colonel will do that for you. Should you need to yank fish out of cover The Colonel will do that for you. Should you want a rod that is light-weight, oh well, The Colonel is not the lightest rod around but it certainly is not heavy. Let’s just say that it is like the Ford Mustang in the world of cars and not the Ferraris.

When it comes to balance, The Colonel is quite well balanced with slightly more weight up front at the tip section. Being a lure casting the rod The Colonel is per-haps made that way as we have our rod tips pointed towards the water most of the time while we manipulate our lures.

The Colonel comes with Fuji compo-nents and my favourite Fuji Component here would be its semi micro guides. Us-ing semi micro guides on an American bass rod styled fishing rod makes it look slimmer. Well, it’s most likely an illusion but it works and that adds appeal.

Back at our lab we put The Colonel through the pressure test to see how much it will take. The Colonel is rated 10-16lb. 10lb is no issue for The Colo-nel. During our test we managed to get it passed the 16lb rating. It took a lot of effort and with safety measures in place The Colonel touched close to 16.5lb at our lab of which is about 0.5lb above rating.

Field Test

For the field test we took The Colo-nel through air and land to a foreign coliseum where gladiator giant snake-heads roam. When it comes to casting, The Colonel does it well. But when it comes to battling the brutes, it cer-tainly earns a Medal of Valor.

The EVA offers a reasonably good grip while the reel seat holds on to the reel well. Its Fuji guides manages the braided line well while the rod man-ages load after load of pressure from the hard fighting brutes and exudes its own brand of power subduing fish af-ter fish.

When it comes to looks, The Colonel may not earn many points but since when do the military pay attention to high fashion? The Colonel’s focus is on practicality and getting the job done well and that is where it excels in.

If you find yourself staring blank-ly, with mouth ajar swooning over the Abu Garcia Xrossfield rod, note that many have done so before you. The Xrossfield is one incredible rod that looks really good but not as good as it feels.

The X Factor

The X on the Xrossfield reminds me of the X-men, a team of mutants with special abili-ties. Which X-men would the Xrossfield be best suited to? It is an elegant rod wrapped with Abu Garcia’s proprietary X carbon wrap and adorned with gold rings thus I feel that it is best suited to the insanely powerful tele-path and scientific genius, Professor Charles Xavier also called Professor X.

Made for the Japanese market, the Xross-field looks simply amazing with carbon fibre sportiness and the carbon X wrapped that Abu Garcia designed (more on this later). Its black high quality EVA and gold rings adds to the elegance of the Xrossfield. The Semi Micro guides by Fuji further enhances the sexiness of this rod thus why it commands stares and complete mindlessness.

Built To Perform

The Abu Garcia Xrossfield is well bal-ance and incredibly light of which is attributed to Abu Garcia’s X Carbon Wrap, a performance type of wrap-ping that allow the blank to remain light while enhancing its power and strength. The X Carbon Wrap im-proves torque and reduces twist to a significant level.

When it comes to sensitivity, the Xrossfield certainly takes the cake with its ultra sensitive blank. The semi mi-cro guides further enhances the Xross-field’s sensitivity telegraphing vibra-tions from the lure, through the blank, and on to the hands of the angler. Every bump at the bottom is felt with much clarity.

Fuji QualityBlank StatsThe Xrossfield comes with a 60% backbone and it has good recoil power that helps with fighting the fish. It also cast really well with a tip that flexes well and shoots lures or in my case, soft baits to very good distances.

Abu Garcia made sure that ev-erything good went into the Xrossfield. They come with Fuji SIC New Concept Semi Mi-cro Guide System of which are lighter, tough, and proven to be able to manage braided lines. It also comes with Fuji reel seat of which holds reels secure it place.

Under Pressure

The Xrossfield has a rating of 5-12lb. Since this isn’t our rod we were extra careful. We managed to get it up to about 7.6lb before calling it quits. It could probably touch 12lb but that would be inflicting the Xrossfield with serious amounts of torture especially for a Medium Light powered rod.

Field Test

.

Since Professor X wasn’t around to do the test we decided to take the Xrossfield to the Saltwater commercial fishing pond in Ju-gra (small coastal town off Selan-gor, Malaysia). There the Xross-field subdued some hard fighting dragon groupers and red drums.

Impressive Fighter

The Xrossfield is a joy to fish with. Being light weight and feeling good in one’s hands the Xrossfield certainly enhances the fun in fish-ing. It is like having a powerful and refined weapon in one’s hand. It cast really good dis-tances allowing us to cover more ground fast especially while targeting the lazy grouper that usually sits in wait for a passing meal. Every bump is felt during the retrieve.

When the brutes decide to hit, the Xrossfield goes into fighting mode instantly. It shows forth its powers and manages fight after fight really well. It has enough power to stop and turn various hard fighting brutes that were heading towards the water wheel. Impressive for a Medium Light rod.

Verdict

The Abu Garcia Xrossfield is certainly a high performance fi-nesse rod that looks really good and is amazing out in the field. It is lightweight and very well bal-anced. Needless to say, I like it a lot and I want one.

Brave Bold DesignHave you heard of the term, “beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder?” Using green even of different tones as the main colour of a fishing rod is like staring a bull in its angry bloodshot eyes before giving it a kick in its kahunas and then running for your life. A rod’s cos-metics play an important role. It means getting picked up or getting left behind.

The Berkley Trout Dough come heavily in green being mainly mosaic design light green and dark metallic green threads, and metallic orange winding check. Its handles (split rear handles) are made of natural cork, ending with a rubber butt cap that sits a Berkley logo. A very bold design and a risky one.

As the buyer you will either love it or hate it. For the designer, if the rods do not fly off the shelves due to its design the hunt for a job will be on his or her to do list. It is a risk and I sincerely hope that whoever who de-signed the Trout Dough series rods grabbed the bull by its horns, gave it the daring kick, and survived the dash of a lifetime.

Rod Construction

The Berkley Trout Dough series rod that we tested comes with a high glass content blank. It feels whippy and somewhat droopy towards the tip. It has a 30% backbone of which simply means that it will bend close to the fore handle. This means that the Trout Dough rod takes loads of absorption thus making it a good ultra light fishing rod.

Weight And Balance

Being built with higher glass content one would expect weight to be an issue but the Berkley Trout Dough series rod feels lighter than expected. Without a reel on the rod feels clumsy and tip heavy. However, securing a reel to it balances things and the weight diminishes (fishing po-sition). If only the same can be done to humans then weight loss will be easy.

Pressure Test

How much pressure would the Berkley Trout Dough rod take? Back at our lab we managed to get it up to 5.5lb but it will most certainly do more. It takes a lot of effort to get it to 5.5lb due to its shorter backbone and we de-cided to stop. It felt as if we had just pumped our arms in the gym.

Field Test

Nothing beats a field test and we decided to have fun at a com-mercial saltwater fishing pond in Jugra (small coastal town off Selangor, Malaysia). There we threw it into the ring where dragon groupers and red drums awaited to unleash some torture.

The dragon groupers obliged and in no time battles upon battles ensued. The Berkley Trough Dough rod took the sudden dashes of these groupers really well as expected with softer tip rods. It took more effort to con-trol these finned brutes but rod fought well and gladiators were landed.

Bad Hook Setting

We did lose some fish due to bad hook-up. One of the disadvan-tages of having a softer tip is that it will take a lot more effort to set the hook. While the tip absorbed the sudden dashes of the fish it also absorbs the force of the angler’s strike thus some fishes were lost.

Verdict

Being green The Berkley Trout Dough series rod certainly stands out from the crowd however some may and some may not like the way it looks. Looks aside, it is a good ul-tra light (the model we tested). How-ever, being an ultra light rod one has to expect it to have lower amounts of power and will need more effort setting the hook. Fighting brutes will require the use of more strength and effort as well.

The 2015 Rod Ford Ryojin reel is one good looking reel. When the curtains parted I thought I was looking at a Van Staal reel. The spools caught my eye. They look like solid brushed aluminium spools one with cut out honey-comb design and the other with cut out rhombus designs. Superb rugged designs that turn heads.

Sporty And Tough

The 2015 Ryojin will come with a toughen body and stem. Being a full metal reel the body feel solid and the stem is rigid. Be-ing a prototype reel there are certain things about it that are not confirmed and one of it is the colour of the body.

For the handle knob, the 2015 Ryojin will come with a carbon fibre chestnut de-signed handle knob. This adds to the out-look (cosmetics) of the reel. It also spins smoothly on this reel that I had the oppor-tunity to play with.

Smooth And Strong Drag

Turn the handle and the rotor starts ro-tating. The rotation is smooth with very minimal friction felt. Such a feel is mostly found in high end, high priced reel. Well, I don’t know how much this new Ryojin will retail for as this is just a prototype reel and no one has the liberty to share such info.

Unfortunately I do not have permission to bring this reel to our lab for further tests. What I can tell you is based on tests done at the location. The 2015 Ryojin has a pow-erful and smooth drag. We tested it by dragging a 5kg dumbbell weight / disc on the carpeted floor. It worked well.

While this unit is only a prototype I be-lieve that the production models will be even better. So far the spools, drag, rotors, bail-arm and wire (of which are tough), handle and handle knob have been confirmed to be on the production models. I certainly want one.

We will furnish you more information when the production reels have been confirmed.

The Devil Spear looks like nothing found in this world. If it were alive it would like the slug from hell. Anyhow, it is designed to attract and aggravate fish to attack. The ribbed body is designed to stay sturdy and create vibrations while the larger / deeper ribs at the spear or tail makes the tail swim like crazy.

Field Test

We tested the Devil Spear at the commercial fishing ponds in Jugra (coastal town just off Selangor, Malay-sia). Because of its weight and streamlined design the Devil Spear cast really well. Of course the rods helped too.

The dragon groupers loved the Devil Spear. We caught a few of them within a short time dragging them slowly at the bottom. The Devil Spear also proved to be tough and are able to withstand the bites of these groupers thus they can be reused over and over again.

Verdict

The Devil Spear may look like an alien from some other planet but what’s more important is its ability to catch fish. What’s even better is that they are tough and can handle the bites of most fishes really well (in this case the dragon groupers) allowing them to be used over and over again.

During our field test we landed a dragon grouper and a barramundi (missed one red drum due to a busted line). It was the last soft bait we tested and didn’t have much time no thanks to the change in weather. The T-Tail Shad not only catches fish, it proved itself to be tough having caught both dragon grouper and barramundi on the same bait (in that order).

Minnow Design

The Ofmer Bolt Lures are minnow designed with holographic laser colours that reflects light really well attracting predators. They do look realistic (and quite pissed off ) as they come with 3D eyes in blood red.

Weight Transfering System

Within the Bolt are ball bearings that help transfer weight to the back dur-ing the cast of which allows the bolt of glide tail first towards its destination. This gives better distance as the Bolt is slices through air with its streamlined design flying rear first. It also elimi-nates the dreaded line getting caught in the hook issue.

Field Test

During our test we did some trolling during the times when we didn’t see any surface activities. The Ofmer Bolt swims really tight and well making it a superb trolling lure. We also managed to hook up a few large giant snake-heads. Even the guide was impressed I think as he said something in his native language of which I don’t understand, giving the Bolt a thumbs up.

Weakness

Unfortunately the hooks that came with the Bolt couldn’t manage the power of the monster size giant snakeheads and thus I lost my first fish of the day due to an open hook. Lucky for me I had lures with 3x strong hooks on them and changes were in place.

Verdict

The Ofmer Bolt 250SP cast well and they swim really tight making them great for both trolling and casting. However, my recommendation of which goes for most lures will be to upgrade the hooks to stronger ones.

It’s safe to In the last issue we discussed square bill crank baits. I hope you gave them a try and have been on to fish. Let us jump into part 2.

Once summer hits rising water temps usually follow close behind and with that causes larger bass to become lazier. When the sun’s rays heat up the water’s surface temperature some bass will stage up on deep ledges and drop-offs where the water is cool and oxygenated. It can be difficult to locate and track down bass in deep water like this and very few tac-tics and fishing methods prevail.

In this case one specific type of crankbait that poses a threat to these lazy summer largemouth is deep diving crankbaits. Deep diving crank-baits rang anywhere from depths to 8ft-20ft and sometimes even deeper. These baits are designed to target fish that lurk in the depths. Fishing deep diving cranks in and around deep rocking flats, drop-offs, ledges, and any places where fish seem to stack up in deep water is key to catching slug-gish fish.

When fishing deep cranks it is important to cov-er as much water as possible by making long cast. It is important that the angler is equipped with a long glass or composite rod ranging from 7’ 6”-7’ 11” in order to launch their bait in the designat-ed area. The other important factor when fishing deep cranks is to use light lines. Lines that are too heavy and too thick in diameter will not allow a deep diving crank to sink to its full potential. 12lb.-14lb. test fluorocarbon is the perfect fish-ing line to have spooled onto your 5.4:1 gear ra-tio casting reel when chucking and winding deep diving cranks.

An important crankbait that should be in-cluded in every bass angler’s arsenal is a lipless crank. Like the squarebill the lipless crank is another versatile lure in a sense that it can be fished at any depth that the angler chooses. While this type of crank may not have a bill it has the similar action of most other crankbaits but with a tighter, more ac-tive side to side wobble.

Lipless cranks tend to come into play dur-ing the cold fall months when water tem-peratures drop and the warm summer air is replaced with the cool breeze of fall. Fall fish will go to great measures to nab an ex-tra meal to stock up before the winter freeze and the lipless crank is just the bait to throw when big fall bass are on the prowl. Since lipless cranks have no bill the angler can control the depth in which they believe the fish are biting thus making the lipless crank a deep and shallow water bass weapon.

One attribute that the lipless crank brings to the table when it comes to reaction style bait is its ability to be ripped through sparse grass and not get hung up. Since the lipless crank has such an erratic action cranking one of these strange looking lures around and above grass beds is a breeze and can al-low the angler to stay in the strike zone.

Casting a lipless on windy points to imitate a schooling baitfish is one way to land some nice fish along with slowly crawling one near the bottom of a rocky shoal to imitate a swimming craw. There are so many different variations and styles to fish the lipless crank making it such a popular lure for bass an-glers all over the globe.

Before tying one of these bad boys on be sure you have a 7’ casting rod that is medium to medium heavy actions with a nice soft tip. It is important to fish these baits with a cast-ings reel that is equipped with a fast gear ratio anywhere between 6.4:1 or 7.1:, this gear ratio is perfect because it will allow the angler reel the lipless crank at a fast pace if need be. Since the lipless has no bill its up the angler to choose what pound test line to use in a specific situation.

While there are so many other crankbaits and hardbaits that exist in the bass fishing world these three seem to have an extremely high productivity rate when out on the wa-ter. Whether it be summer, fall, or spring these three have their niche in the bass fish-ing industry and will aid in landing more bass next time you’re out on the water.

Last issue with discussed about scent, what they are, why they sometimes catch lots of fish and why they sometimes don’t, how they work, etc. Let us now go fur-ther taking a look at how scent can be used with the various types of fishing. We’ll start out with bottom fishing in this issue.

The Scent TrailScent works very well for bottom fishing. The reason scent works well for bottom fishing is because the bait does not move much. Once the bait reaches the bottom chances are that it will stay there for a few minutes (if not more). Scent creates a trail that aims to lead fishes lurk-ing around to the bait sitting at the bottom.

An Enhancer

All baits used for bottom fishing such as various meats, insects, worms, dough, fruits, etc. already come with some form of scent. The use of scent here is to act as an enhancer to the original scent and attract fishes within the scent trail to check out the bait. Of course if the scent used is unsuitable for the said lake or pond, the opposite ef-fect will happen.

Encourages Fish To Bite

Sometimes you may have your bait sit-ting at the bottom for awhile and you know that the fishes are there. For some reason they do not seem to want to take the bait. They know that the bait is there and something seems off. Using scent here can help trigger a bite if the right scent is used.

Adding Scent To Baits

One of the most common methods of using scent is to add them to baits. This is common with anglers that fish using dough bait. Some anglers use powdered scent and some pour liquid scent or es-sence into their dough mix. I have done it and it makes a difference. Of course the same can be used for natural baits such as meats, worms, etc.

Okay, this is not a general term but some-thing I made up during my time design-ing products for one of the world’s largest fishing tackle companies. A scent bomb is something you cast out and allow it to drop to the bottom of the area you intend to fish. The scent leaks out slowly creating trails to what we call the fishing zone.

What I used to do was to use a little plas-tic bottle, make holes in it, and place lots of cotton in it until it is quite compact. I then slowly fill it up with scent (at the pond) and cast it out to where I am fishing.

The scent will be released slowly creating a trail to your fishing zone. This in turn at-tracts fishes to your zone and then to your bait. This has worked well for me.

Do note that the scent will run out sooner or later and you will have to reload your bait as well as scent bomb with more scent. Also try not to break the scent trail.

This article is a follow up to my article ‘Soft Plastic Adventures 2’.The adventure con-tinues with my favourite style of fishing. Re-cently Pure Fishing Malaysia sent me some awesome baits fresh from Japan. Limited stocks are available at http://eco-sports.com.my/. I was stoked to try the baits, and the results were great. Some of these baits have been featured in the November Issue of The Asian Angler magazine.

I planned to fish a monsoon drain, with some small and finicky striped snakeheads. The Berkley Hollow Baby 3” in Maroko seemed to be the perfect bait because of its small pro-file and natural colour, mimicking the food source of the haruans in the monsoon drain which consist of small baitfish, shrimps and insects

Success! After a few seconds of slowly twitch-ing the bait, this little striped snakehead was fooled. Actually two striped snakeheads tried to gobble up the bait, but this little one was greedier. After snapping a few pics it was re-leased to fight another day.

Some of the striped snakeheads that lurk in the monsoon drain may seem like an easy game but one wrong cast and they are gone. Getting the bait to drop in slowly like real food triggered some aggressive reaction bites.

I continued fishing with the Berkley Power-bait Inch Hawg in Cinnamon Purple Fleck. I rigged it on the Jazz RHead D-Type jighead. The Inch Hawg is 1.5” in length which makes it look absolutely like real forage. I fished it fast with some twitches, and the jighead darted around and triggered another reaction bite. Fish on!

I noticed a damaged spinner bait in my tackle box and I knew I could put it to good use. I rigged a Berkley 3” Powergrub in firetiger on the bait, and I hooked my first spinnerbait fish. This little striped snakehead couldn’t re-sist the tasty looking bait.

I continued fishing with the same bait and 5 minutes later, the sec-ond fish was on. I saw some com-motion in a shallow weedy area and made a cast. I did not notice that this fish was on because of the weeds.

A few days later I decided to fish in the monsoon drain. The water was a bit murky and the fishing was slow. I tried the Berkley Powerbait Saltwater Shrug Minnow in the white glow pattern because it looks like a shrimp or a small minnow. After a few casts this little striped snakehead obliged.

I never had confidence in spinnerbaits, so I decided to fish them more. Mr.Juan Wei of Sport Fishin’ Asia once told me that confidence plays a crucial role in lure fishing. He suggested that I try some spinner-baits for striped snakeheads, as they can produce fish despite the weird look. I hooked 3 snakeheads that evening on the same spinnerbait with the Berkley 3” Powergrub as a trailer.

The next day I fished a new spinnerbait, but the fish-ing was really slow. I added the Berkley 3” Powergrub in hopes of triggering more bites. I hooked a solid striped snakehead, but after an acrobatic flip and a dive into weeds, it was off. I did not give up and con-tinued casting. I received a consolation in form of this healthy striped snakehead, which ambushed the spinnerbait during the fall.

One gloomy Saturday morning I decided to fish with some bud-dies. The Berkley Powerbait Kasumi Craw produced this flying striped snakehead. I made a cast and the soft plastic went over a tree branch .I decided to twitch it in the wa-ter, and out of the blue comes this ferocious little striped snakehead.

It started to rain and after some quick pictures this cute striped snakehead was released. I went back home with some buddies and played some ping pong while waiting for the rain to stop.

The water was calm and clear after the rain. I fished a popper beside a small grass island and it was ambushed by this beautiful striped snakehead. Sec-ond half of the morning session is going good. This beautiful fish was released to grow bigger and badder.

We continued fishing until the sun was high above our heads. The fish were hiding in weeds since it was hot so we changed tactics. We used the Berkley Kasumi Craw, without the claws. The smaller profile triggered some good bites from both big striped snake-heads and small ones. These 2 striped snakeheads were released as usual.

Berkley Powerbait Kasumi Craw 3” in black orange worked great to get this haruan out of grass. I fished the craw fast as a top water bait, and the kasumi craw was viciously hit. The orange claws and orange eyes of the striped snakehead seem to fit together nicely.

The Double Hawg proving it’s worth again. The sun was up and the striped snakeheads in the pond shunned almost every lure I tried that morn-ing. My Double Hawg happened to cross an opening in between some weeds at the right time. The fish shot out of the water like a mis-sile and was immediately hooked. Catch and release is the way to go.

Here’s a decent striped snakehead on the Berkley Powerbait 3” Ka-sumi Craw in green pumpkin char-treuse. There’s something about the kasumi craw that triggers aggressive hits both topwater and underwa-ter. One of my deadliest baits be-sides the Powerbait Double Hawg.

This picture proves that the Kasumi Craw is one bait you must have for snakeheads. Despite the murky wa-ter and the heavy rain, I hooked this striped snakehead after losing another 3 small ones. The last month of 2014 is here and I am hoping to end it with some more quality fish.

After I drew Rotation 5 the night before, my partner and I were keen to get started. We did some last min-ute preparations late into the night and got everything ready for an early start the next day. All that is left is to load up the van and brew our tea in the morning!

Regret having my thermals on.

Day 1 and I drew Church on peg 11, Kevin dropped me off and I got set up straightaway. Had Dave Brettle on my left and Mike Kirby, another first timer to Ire-land, on my right. The starting whistle blew everyone got down to business. Everyone was on the tip and I caught some early hybrids. Didn’t expect pike would heavily ‘tax’ your catches though! I stayed on the feed-er throughout the match but things didn’t quite go my way. Every time I turned to Dave and Mike they were reeling in fish! After my first day of Irish match fishing it was evident there still was plenty for me to learn. Had a low 2.340kg, but it was a good experience and at least it wasn’t the lowest weight in my section. Kevin went through some tactics with me later on the way back so had to remember a few things!

Day 3 and I drew Peg 3 and Kiltybardan, handy cause I had a practise just at the next peg so was somewhat familiar with it. With ‘ 3 red maggots’ and ’50 turns’ drilled into me head the night before, I was attacking my swim with plenty of feed on the tip and pole lines. I swapped between tip and pole to get the bites com-ing and caught some hybrids and skimmers. Heard Killadeas was fishing hard and wondering how Kevin got on. Certainly felt a little bit more confident in this match and caught better than the first two days. Guess I managed to repay some of Kevins’ and Steve’s trust in me by weighing in at 6.860kg for a second in the sec-tion with Frances again coming up tops with 8.00kg. Went back to the cottage to some high fives from Steve and plenty of cheering in the pub that night!

Misty and muddy.

Day 4

Up on a cold, misty morning, I drew peg 1 at Ross Lough, the poor guys on the higher numbered pegs though had to lug it all the way to the peg through the mud. There was a small discussion going on as to how far anglers are allowed to wade out due to the mud and low water level. Can’t believe how shallow it was! Set up on the rushes and caught early hybrids on the tip. I thought the fishing was really good with some early hybrids, at least until all the mist cleared and the sun came out which made bites really hard to come by. The resident pikes where there and they were no help eating some of my precious catches. The sun was out too and the old watch indicated 33 degrees Cel-cius. I’m getting a nice tan from all this fishing! At the end of the day I managed a measly 3.600kg and Carl at peg 2 weighed 3.800kg, guess not the best pegs on Ross. Still enjoying the fishing and the scenery with warm weather all around. and will be looking forward to section 4 tomorrow.

With so many options on the market, choosing the best fishing line can seem a bit overwhelming. But it’s actually a simple matter of finding a line with performance characteristics that fit your style of fishing.

What Is Mono?

As its name implies, monofilament fishing line—or "mono" for short—is a single strand of material, as opposed to multi-filament lines, which are strung from multiple strands that are fused, braided or bundled together.

Monofilament can be extruded from different materials, but nylon is by far the most common and popular medium. Often, different varieties of nylon are blended together into co- and multi-polymers to produce varying degrees of stretch, strength, abrasion resistance and other important attributes.

Benefits of Mono

Easy To Handle - Thanks to its flexible nature, monofilament is easy to use and works well for many fishing situations. This flexibility often described as limpness makes mono more manageable and easier to cast than stiffer lines.

Stretch - Mono stretches more than superlines and more easily than fluorocarbon, which gives it a forgiveness factor other lines can’t match. If your drag sticks or you set the hook too hard, mono compensates by stretching up to 25 percent or more.

By stretching under pressure, mono also helps prevent your hook from tearing a hole in a fish’s mouth, which can make it easier for the fish to come unbuttoned. This is a factor both on the hookset and during the fight, especially when you’re dealing with big fish in close quarters. For example, many top bass pros and gamefish anglers (Marlin & Sailfish) prefer a beefy mono like Berkley Big Game over superline for pitching jigs.

Shock Strength - Stretch should not be confused with shock strength, which is a fishing line’s ability to absorb energy—and an equally important consideration. Shock strength comes into play when your line has to withstand the sudden impact of a hard hookset or a big fish thrashing violently at boatside.

Diameter - Mono is admittedly prone to larger diameters than fluorocarbon or superlines. While the added circumference can be a limiting factor in how deep your lures dive, you can use the extra breadth to your advantage—such as slowing the fall of a Berkley Gulp! or PowerBait softbait, or when threading a bait through cover as the thicker line makes it more abrasion resistant.

Sink Rate—Thanks to its near-neutral buoyancy, mono sinks slowly, making it a great choice for topwater lures and suspended subsurface presentations where you don’t want to accelerate the bait’s downward movement.

Color Palette—Mono is easier for manufacturers to tint than other types of line, so it’s available in a wider range of colors. You can choose from stealthy, low-visibility options such as green, blue or clear—or spin the color wheel the opposite direction and spool with high-vis shades perfect for line-watching presentations. Some monos, like Berkley Trilene TransOptic, offer the best of both worlds by changing color from bright gold in sunlight to low-vis clear below the surface.

Tying The Knot—Mono is knot-friendly. You can use a variety of strong, easy-to-tie knots without sacrificing the strength of the line. In fact, a Trilene Knot or Palomar Knot offers nearly 100 percent knot strength when tied with premium mono.

Inexpensive—The most affordable of all line choices, mono is definitely easy on the pocketbook. Considering the critical role line plays in your quest to catch fish, it ranks among the sport’s best investments.

Ease Of Use—Thanks to a combination of manageability, stretch, easy knot tying and other fishing-friendly features, mono is the best fishing line if ease of use is your main concern. This makes it a great choice for everyone from first-time anglers to looking to simplify their presentations or seasoned veterans utilizing the lines characteristics for specific techniques.

Tradeoffs

While mono has many benefits, there are tradeoffs. For example, because of its stretchiness, it’s not overly sensitive. If you need to detect ultra-light bites, discern subtle changes in bottom composition or feel what your lure is doing at all times—especially at long distances—a superline or fluorocarbon is a better choice.

Mono also has a lower tensile strength than either of these options, which means it has a thicker diameter at a given breakstrength. This can be a benefit in slowing sink rate, but it also means lures won’t run as deep on mono as superline or fluoro.

Also, prolonged exposure to UV light can weaken mono, although it may take hundreds of hours to incur appreciable damage. We recommend changing nylon monofilament lines at least once a year.

Which Mono, When?

As with other types of line, monos are designed for specific performance characteristics. Here are a few top picks to consider when choosing the best fishing line for your particular needs:

Berkley Big Game - Offers excellent shock strength and is built for battling trophy sailfish, cobia, barramundi, giant snakehead (Toman), jungle perch (Sebarau) and other big fish.

Berkley Trilene XT - An abrasion-resistant workhorse ideal for fishing in and around rocks or cover.

Berkley Trilene XL - More manageable and castable, and is a fine all-around choice for general fishing away from line-abrading snags.

Berkley Trilene Sensation - Extremely strong for its diameter, yet also sensitive and manageable, offering professional-grade performance in a monofilament package.

DID YOU KNOW?

Monofilament fishing lines absorb water, which means they behave differently beneath the surface than when you’re testing them in the tackle shop.

The degree varies. Some are sponges, sopping up 8 percent or more of their weight in water. Premium blends absorb less, but still soak up some.

In general, water absorption makes mono "looser," or more relaxed than when the line is dry. It stretches more, handles better and casts farther. On the flip side, abrasion resistance tends to suffer, along with both tensile and shock strength.

BenefitsSensitivity—Thanks to its zero stretch, superline transmits information from your lure better than any other type of fishing line. You can feel light bites, when your lure ticks bottom, and tell if weeds or other debris has fouled your presentation.

Thin Diameter—This is undeniably the best fishing line in terms of tensile strength, which refers to breakload per diameter. Since a 30-pound super-line may have the same diameter as 12-pound premium nylon monofila-ment, you can downsize diameter without sacrificing strength. Alternately, you may also choose to put the odds in your favor by using a heavier pound line without sacrificing your ability to cast long distances.

Thinner line diameter offers multiple benefits. Because there’s less drag in the water, it allows lures like crankbaits to run deeper on the same break-strength superline as mono, with less letback. This also allows medium-diving lures to become deep runners, without the hard-to-reel resistance of an oversize lip—a key consideration during marathon casting sessions.

This same principle of less drag also lends itself well to current applications as there is minimal resistance against the line allowing for more natural presentations. Second, super-thin fishing line allows a stealthier presenta-tion when fish are finicky or inactive. Finally, thin lines fuel longer casts—and a thin, round superline like Berkley NanoFil casts a country mile, even with light lures. Longer casts also work in the shore anglers favor allowing virtually unreachable areas to be fished.


Abrasion Resistance—Due to their exceptionally thin diameter, not all su-perlines stand up as well to abrasion. But some are exceptionally tough, such as Berkley FireLine and Trilene Braid.

The good news is, you can compensate by loosening your drag setting, using a softer rod, or adding a mono shock leader to the end of the main-line.

High Visibility—With the exception of translucent Berkley FireLine Fused Crystal, superlines lack the hard-to-see qualities of low-vis nylon monofilament and fluorocarbon. However, adding a mono or nearly in-visible fluoro leader to superline mainline can provide the best of both worlds.

Knot Issues—Not every knot holds superline like they do monofilament. Trusted knots like the Palomar Knot work well, but it’s best to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations. For connecting superline to leader ma-terial, a three-turn Surgeon’s Knot or uni to uni knot are great options.

Ease Of Use—Superline has very little to no spool memory and does not untwist like mono, which makes lines like NanoFil and FireLine fantas-tic for spinning reels. However, it’s not forgiving in terms of stretch or haphazard knot-tying, and when you get a backlash, it’s really a backlash. But by making adjustments such as loosening your drag, tempering your hooksets and tying carefully, superline is a great tool for presentations where strength and sensitivity are paramount.
