S ome like it hot. Some like it cold. Some want it both
ways. The demands of human beings are a plenty. Take
for example the car. At rst we had them in manual
gearbox. Then came the automatic gearbox. Still driv-
ers were not satised. They wanted both and thus we
now have gearboxes than can do both manual and au-
tomatic the likes of Tiptronic gearboxes.

The same goes to shing. We want our shing tackle
to be able to do lots of things. We want our lures to
be able to nd sh. We want rods that can do both
spinning and casting. We want lines to be thinner
than braid but invisible like uorocarbon. We want
a lot but let us take a look at a casting reel that is
also made for jigging.

The Abu Garcia Salty Stage BV8 is a reel designed
for both casting and jigging. More precisely, it is
made for inshore or bay type of shing where wa-
ters are shallow and the shing considered to be
saltwater light tackle shing.
Inshore Fishing
To be able to do both casting and jigging, the Abu
Garcia Salty Stage BV8 reel comes with both a dou-
ble handle and a single power handle. The double
handle with EVA knobs is like most handles you nd
on a baitcasting reel. this handle is 95mm in length
with a 4mm thickness.
Two Handles

The other handle is a single EVA knob power handle
than can be set at a length of either 60mm or 70mm
depending on the user’s preference. Installing this
handle instantly transforms the reel into a jigging
reel.
Power Handle
Why the difference in handle lengths? Well, at cer -
tain angles a longer length gives you leverage al-
lowing you to exert more force on the sh without
adding more strength. A longer handle also quick-
ens the speed of retrieve. 1 turn of a longer handle
equals to more turns of the spool if compared to the
same spool being cranked with a shorter handle.

I am not sure how many of you are fans of Robotech.
The Salty Stage BV8 reminds me of the Mechas
with its sleek somewhat robotic looks. The gunmet-
al grey and chrome parts add to the Mecha outlook.
Remember Robotech?
As with the Mechas, toughness is key. To hold every-
thing steady the Salty Stage BV8 comes with a tough
and robust aluminium alloy frame that supports ev-
erything within it even under heavy pressure. This
allows the reel to continue working smoothly during
the ght with a brute.
Tough Frame

Lightweight Spool
To cast lighter lures the Salty Stage BV8 comes with
a highly ported lightweight shallow spool. That said,
it is capable of taking in enough line for most types
of inshore casting or jigging. The spool is capable of
taking 220 metres of 10lb mono lines or 250 metres
of 10lb braided line.
When a big sh is stripping line out of your spool,
your adrenaline starts running and the excitement
begins. However, most baitcasting reels remain as
quiet as an electric car as lines get stripped away.
This reel screams and thus heightens the excite-
ment level. Screaming reels add on a lot more fun.

When it comes to casting, the Salty Stage BV8 uses
the “Magtrax II” magnetic brake system to control
the spool. Some of you may be wondering if the
magnets actually do what they are supposed to do
since magnets have no effect on aluminium; well
do refer to The Asian Angler January 2013 issue to
learn how they work.
Magnetic Brakes
These days most reels come tted with carbon drag
washers. The Salty Stage BV8 is no different. It
comes with Abu Garcia’s long proven “Carbon Ma-
trix” Drag system that has been powering the Abu
Garcia reels for many years now. The benet is a
strong drag that remains smooth.

Lab TesT Equipment Used Line: Berkley Fireline (fused)Poundage: 20lb
Abu Garcia claims that the Salty Stage BV8 has a
max drag of 7kg. With that in mind we reeled a few
yards of 20lb fused line and secured it directly to the
anchor. We increased the drag to almost full and
pulled. Our meter showed that it exceeded the 7kg
mark while the drag remained smooth. We maxed it
and got it to 18.4lb or 8.3kg with the drag still smooth.
So far we only managed to put it through the lab test
and the results are good. However, we have yet to
see how it performs in the eld. Lookout for our next
issue where we take it to the battle grounds and pit
it against some nned gladiators.

For Te Aquaphobic
Dry bags are super important to anglers especially thoseho love to sh on boats, kayaks, and other watercrafts.
ven to those who love Fishing along jungle streams and
vers.
ecently we tested out the Rodford Aquaphobic Camo
ry Bag. To test the dry bag we drafted a plan. The bag
eeds to be tortured and it need to be drowned. That way
e know for sure that it will be able to handle most situa-
ons not taking into consideration hardcore abuses.
Fooling About
First we took it to a eld, allowed air to ll up, and
we sealed the bag. We then decided to play catch
and threw it about. It ew up high and crashed a
few times. Yes, we were abusing it and I admit to
that. Anyhow, after our fooling about we inspected
the bag and all seemed ne. Of course we do not
recommend that you throw your dry bags about like
we did.

Floating On A Stream
Next we took the dry bag to a stream, threw the
mobile phone of the guy who decided to play ball
with the bag in, and threw it into the stream. Not a
deep one. Just one that is about two feet deep. We
allowed it to oat about while we ate a sandwhich.
Out of nowhere someone’s kid sat on it thinking that
it would make a good boat but of course it didn’t. He
just tumbled and ended up in the water while our
friend who’s mobile phone is in the bag panicked a
little and “accidentally” let out an adult rated word.
Having A Splash
Next the dry bag with the mobile phone inside was
given a splash. Not just a splash. The amount of wa-
ter splashing on it was quite massive. Not as deadly
as the Niagara Falls but it will give anyone standing
beneath it a good massage and a pounding. Need-
less to say, our friend who’s mobile phone is being
tortured in the bag felt like he had a bunch of red
ants his pants.

The Relief
After about 15 minutes of being pounded by lots of
water we decided to end the torture, especially that
of our friend. We wiped the bag dry and handed it to
our tortured friend. He opened the bag, put his hand
in, and took out his mobile phone. That followed with
a smile. The phone survived the torture. Our friend
survived the torture too. So did the Rodford Aqua-
phobic Camo Dry Bag.
Verdict
Personally I like the camo design. It also remaineddry inside despite the massive amounts of water
torture that it went through. Price wise, I nd it to be
decent. One thing to note, before you put your ex-
pensive cameras, mobile phones, and other expen-
sive gadgets, do test out your dry bag rst to ensure
that the one you have is not defective. This goes
especially for waterproof pouches. We tested some
(other brands) and some did leak.

The weighted head of the Swim Shad helps with casting
allowing for greater distances. When it hit the surface
of the water it dives all the way to the bottom wiggling
its paddle tail giving the impression of a swimming sh.
This action has on many occasions generated a reaction
strike from predator shes.

T he Berkley Powerbait Swim Shad is one heck of
a bait. They are great baits for shing snakeheads
especially the powerful and ferocious giant snake-
head (toman). They look like real sh and swim like
a live sh.

Scent And Flavour
Another feature that appeals to the olfactory senses of
predator shes are its scent and avours of which scien-
tist at Berkley has spent more than 25 years researching.
How Powerbaits work is that they attract shes with its
scent and when the shes bite the bait, it releases avour
and that avour is said to make sh hold on longer.

T he NEW Salty Stage Skid Jig was inspired by a
squid’s darting and attacking action. This innovative
motion is achieved by the keel shape on the bottom
of the jig.
It is a completely new style of jigging. While the typi-
cal metal jig catches sh after it touches the bottom
or during retrieve. The Skid Jig is designed to catch
sh even when it is falling by its ‘switch back’ action
imitating squid attacking bait sh.

flueger President Limited Edition
Introducin’ Te Asian Angler

P ueger has been making some really good look-
ing and lightweight reels. The Pueger President
Limited Edition being lighter, better looking, and a
faster reel; brings the President reel series to the
next level.
Presidential Goodness
Black Knight
To me, the Pueger President Limited Edition conjures
up an image of a black knight (not the Dark Knight aka
Batman), the knights that would give King Arthur and
his knights a headache so big he’d wished he had not
pulled out the Excalibur from the rock.

The President Limited Edition comes in a dark me-
tallic black body and rotor, with gun metal grey
chromed on its side (rotor) and at the bottom of the
reel. it has red lines to add character to its design.
The spool in gun metal grey with red linings. Put
them all together and you get a black knight.
Sinisterly Nice Spool
The spool feels light. It is ported with an unusual de-
sign of squares and rounded rectangles. The spool is
braid ready of which means that you can use braided
lines on it with the need of a monolament backing.

Thick Bail Wire
The President comes with a thick bail wire, perhaps a
show of strength and power as with most knights; an
intimidating look helps psychologically. Yes, that ap-
plies to shing too. When an angler uses tough look-
ing and feeling shing tackle, his or her condence is
boosted. This help win battles.
The handle of the President looks really good. It come
in gun metal black with a carbon bre handle. The
knob is made of rosewood. Using rosewood not only
adds elegance to the reel. It also adds to its sinister
character since rosewood has red coloured grains.

Smooth Performer
With 9+1 corrosion resistant ball bearings (6+1 on the
size 20), the President Limited Edition is one sleek
and smooth performer. Cranking feels smooth and
connected. The well balanced rotor certainly adds to
the smoothness.
Main Shaft & Gears
Pueger opted to give the President Limited Edition an
aluminium main shaft and aluminium pinion gear. This
is done to bring down the weight of the reel. Pueger
claims that by doing so they managed to reduce the
weight by 30% on the main shaft and 60% on the pin-
ion gear.

Sealed Drag
To improve the performance of the drag, the President
Limited Edition comes with an advanced sealed drag
system that keeps water and dirt away thus giving op-
timum drag performance. This increases the durabil-
ity of the drag washers.
Thumbs Up
We have not tested the Pueger President Limited
Edition (as of time of writing) out in the eld yet but
so far it looks good and feels good. It has got a rigid
body, reel foot, etc. Well, stay tuned as we will be tak-
ing the President Limited Edition out to the eld soon.

Introducin’ Te Asian Angler
e: Products in this section may have not been tested by Te Asian Angler magazine
Z Craft’s 0 Degree and 30 Degree is an extremely
versatile jig head. They feature Owner SW hooks of
which are very popular with serious game anglers.
The uniquely designed head provides very good
swim action for slow and fast retrieves. Together
with the new “X-Flex Locker”, they hold soft plastic
lures rmly in place.
&0Degree
The 0 Degree jig heads sits on the bottom at. This
allows the soft plastic bait to sit at at the bottom the
way a resting sh would. Giving it a twitch and letting
the soft plastic bait rest again for a few seconds will
attract hits from predators looking for a resting sh to
hit.

The 30 Degree jig heads on the other hand sits atthe bottom with the hook pointed 30 degrees upward.
This allows the soft plastic bait to be at a 30 degree
angle with its head facing the bottom like a feeding
sh or worm. Giving light twitches further enhances
the illusion attracting predators to hit.

Zen Zagan Slow Pitch Rod
By Zen X EA
W hen Zen Zagan started collaborating with Ex-
treme Anglers, there was a disruption in the force.
Zen Zagan rods took a step onto a whole new level
where occupying good rods can no longer just re-
main good. They have got to be better than good.
Here’s why...
The 0 Degree jig heads sits on the bottom at. This
allows the soft plastic bait to sit at at the bottom the
way a resting sh would. Giving it a twitch and letting
the soft plastic bait rest again for a few seconds willattract hits from predators looking for a resting sh to

C u s t o m R o d s
Then comes the folks at MGFA, the creators of Zen
Zagan who have been making quality rods and afford-
able prices for years. They too are anglers rst and
business people second, thus why their rods have a
cult following.

BridgingCustomAndProductionRods
The coming together of MGFA and Extreme Anglers
brings custom rods to the production oor which also
means anglers now get to use custom rods at an af -
fordable price. Oh what fun it is to ride on this train.
BrandConscious?
Of course if you are not brand conscious you would
be jumping for joy when you’ve got a rod that feels
better than one about 8 times the price. For the brand
conscious it would be like racing a Ferrari LaFerarri
on the track and being overtaken by a Nissan GTR
driven by a “Sunday driver.”

The Slow Pitch
That brings us to the Zen Zagan Slow Pitch rod of
which is developed by Extreme Anglers Custom Prod-
ucts and produced by MGFA. With the slow pitch jig-
ging game kicking into gear, this rod has been making
waves around the jigging community.
WellDe signed
The Zen Zagan Slow Pitch rods are well designed
following Japanese rod design cues of which tends
to be the preferred design amongst anglers that pur -
chase rods of this price point. It comes with a split
rear handle section being separated by an X wrapped
carbon blank section.

Spor ty R
eel Se a t
The reel seat is by Fuji which speaks volumes on its
quality. After all why use anything lesser than the best
when you’ve got a world class rod. A good quality reel
seat is not enough; Extreme Anglers “sportied” by
adding a carbon bre wrapped nut to it.
RoundedRearEVA
The rear EVA of the rod is rounded with the entire
thing designed somewhat like a light bulb. Why go
with a rounded rear end? Perhaps it could be anglers
these days being more macho, battling brutes with-
out the need of a ghting belt. A rounded rear end
perhaps reduces the pain although the battle scars
remain. Maybe it is just aesthetics.

Qualit y Blank
Good quality blanks do not have to cost a kidney. The
Zen Zagan Slow Pitch rod comes with a good quality
blank that has a tip with good rebound power and a
butt section that is stiff and capable to taking a beat-
ing by brutes.
Quality Guides
When it comes to building one of the best rods, noth-
ing is left to chance thus the use of high quality Fuji
Guides. Fuji tangle free K Guides System is used on
the Zen Zagan Slow Pitch. This tough and smooth
guides reduces line wear and can take a beating.
They are also light weight of which brings the weight
of the rod down.

Summary
The Zen Zagan Slow Pitch Rod By Zen X EA is no
ordinary rod. It may not have the brand appeal as the
Japanese names such as one that resembles a big
big bass or another one of which reminds us of some-
thing that will be always green; yet the Zen Zagan
Slow Pitch will hold its own and can stand tall with
ease amongst the big boys.

I f you are looking for a lure that swims well in ow-
ing waters or waters with current, or if you are sim-
ply looking for a lure that swims fast, the ORCraft
Spearyu is one to consider.
O R C ra f t S p ea r y u
The Spearyu lure comes in a at and slim body prole
giving it both good aerodynamics and hydrodynamics
which means that you get better casting distance and
you can make it can swim fast. It darts very well too
imitating eeing scared or panicking sh.

Spearyu lures are weighted with magnetic weights.
This helps with casting where the sudden shift in
weight of the of the magnetic weights thrusts the lure
forward giving it the extra push during the launch of
the lure at the beginning of the cast thus driving the
lure further.
Weighted
With the weights together, the lure is well balanced
sitting on the surface of the water. This also allows
for better manipulation of the lure during the retrieve
whether it is darting, twitching, or simply being re-
trieved at a constant speed.

T he Bluewater P163 Rocket Popper is an extreme-
ly versatile lure that can be shed in a number of dif -
ferent ways. The P163 features a special tail-bias
weighting system that serves two main purposes.
The heavy tail weight causes the lure to y straight
and true through the air – meaning the P163 casts
like a rocket.
P o p p e r s
The tail weighting also causes the lure to sit nose-up
in the water during the retrieve. This nose-up position
causes the lure to literally skip and dart along the sur -
face during a straight, high-speed retrieve; perfectly
imitating a eeing surface baitsh.

T here are so many crank baits available. They come
in so many shapes and sizes and with many names giv-
en by various brands. They are called different things
in different places. In general they are designed to look
like sh such as bass, gar sh, ballyhoo, minnows, and
shads. There are also those resembling bugs and frods.
Minnows and Shads are some of the most widely used.

Lure Fishing BasicsC r a n k b a i t s Part 2
Minno ws
In general minnows come in a slimmer body design with
a longish prole. From the basic design, lure design-
ers have created a variety of different body designs de-
pending on the desired swim action of the lures. With
that comes new names and terms such as walkers, jerk
baits, etc.

Shads
In general shads come in a body design that is some -
what taller in the mid towards the 3rd quarter of the
front end; and with a shorter prole. Again designers
have created a variety of body designs based on the
basic shad design.
Frogs
Frog crankbaits are designed to look like a variety of
frogs. They are mainly top water swimmers. From these
designs a few other frog crankbaits varieties are avail-
able with some given a bill or a lip.

With lure designers having to out-design one and oth-

be found such those resembling snakes (head), vari-
ous insects such as cicadas and grasshoppers, gator
heads, etc.
Join ted
While most crankbaits come in one piece, there are
crankbaits that are jointed; meaning that they come in
two or more parts being joint together to make a lure.
This gives the lure a more lifelike swim action.

Crankbaits come with a variety of bills or lips depend-
ing on the desired swim action as well as swim depth.
There are also crankbaits that do not have a bill or lip.
They are called lipless crankbaits. More about these
later.
T o S umm a r i z e
There are many crankbaits out there but these are
amongst the common ones used. We could go deep-
er but then it would be better done in the “Knowledge
Wise” section. Next issue we will look at an important
part of crankbaits; the bill or lip as well as the lipless.

W hen it comes to hooks the choices are a plenty
and can get quite confusing. Hooks come in various
forms or types for a host of different purposes. With
this issue let us take a look at some of the types of
hooks that are available in the market starting off with
the more common ones.

esOne of the most used hooks these days are Chinu hooks.
They are amongst the favourite hooks used by bottom
bait anglers catching shes such as mullets, breams,
tilapia, carp, and a host of many other shes.

Chinu hooks have an eye that faces forward, meaning
that should you place it lying down on a at surface, the
eye will be looking parallel to the at surface. Should
you put a shing line through it will be parallel to the at
surface. The eye is very slightly bent backwards away
from the hook point. This is also known as “tuned up”
eye.
T h e
E y e
Chinu hooks come with a more rounded and offset bend.
An offset bend means that the hook point and the shank
are not aligned. This means that if you were to put the
hook lying down on a at surface the hook will not lie
at. The point is pointed slightly off to the right or the
left of the shank. This is said to allow for better hook up.

Another common hook used by bottom bait anglers is
the Beak hook. These hooks are used for shing an ar -
ray of sh both saltwater and freshwater species. Beak
refers more to the hook point and they come in a vari-
ety of names and types.
Be akhooks
Beak hooks generally have a point that is curved up-
wards towards the shank. It looks somewhat like the
beak of a bird. Beak hooks come in all variety of hook
eyes from tuned up to spade ends (at without hole).
Many of us take hooks for granted but as one get more
intimate with them one will understand more and be
able to choose hooks that are best suited for a certain
type of shing.
