The PENN Squall Level Wind reel is the sucessor to the GT series reels which have been around for decades and proven themselves on big fish. The Squall LW has all of the proven featurs of the GT series, with the addition of improved gear ratios and an Instant Anti-Reverse bearing, in a more compact package. Left hand sizes available in the 20 and 30 sizes.

PENN SQUALL LEVEL WIND

THE PENN ADVANTAGE

The PENN GT family of reels is one of the most recognizable on the market and perhaps the most capable all-around level wind reel available. The GT reels are available in models capable of everything from light-duty inshore bottom fishing to heavy-duty halibut models and that is why they are the standard reel of choice on charter and private boats throughout the country.

My fellow anglers and friends,

The rainy seasons (I mean really, really wet season) has passed and these days we get more sun a day than what we got in half a month during the rainy seasons. So what are you waiting for? Looks like a good time to teach some of your lures to swim and attract fish. Oh wait... We’ve got some interesting new fishing tackle you may want to get for your new adventures.

For starters, beginning this issue you have the opportunity to win some fabu-lous prizes the likes of the Accurate Boss Fury reel, Pflueger Arbor reel, and Pflueger President reel. How cool is that? Go to page 340 for more details.

Having issues with the missus nagging you on spending too much money on fishing tackle? Check out these rods that we recently tested such as the new Viper Sting, new Rod Ford Halfmoon, and the monster killing Berkley River Monster. These rods are truly forgiving on the pocket and they are good rods.

We also tested this mind blowing, amazingly effective, and incredibly tough lure; the Salmo Hornet Black Tiger. Picking up this lure is like choosing a Fiat Panda over the Ferrari Scuderia but this time the Panda wins the race. The Hornet beat the freaking daylights out of every other lure we had that day.

Another thing we did is to take the newly launched Abu Garcia Revo Beast into battle. Just imagine this... a killer reel, killer rods, and a killer lure... this time it certainly is overkill.

Well, I hope you enjoy this issue.

Thank you for your support and happy reading.

Cheers,PhilEditor In Chief

Abu Garcia Revo BeastThe Mark Of The Beast

Beauty and the beast, a well known fairy tale of love between a beautiful princess and an ugly beast. Well, that’s fairy tale. This here is the Abu Garcia Revo Beast, a very real fishing reel with both beauty and the beast built into one.

Test InformationModel Tested

Series: Revo Beast

Model: RVO3 Beast-L

Testing Grounds: Jugra

Opponents: Groupers

21

Page 22: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 23: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Recognizably Revo

One look at the Beast and you instant-ly know of its heritage, the Revo heri-tage. It carries with it the mark of Revo reels past of which are a slender body with a large and muscular gearbox.

23

Page 24: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 25: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Dark Beauty

The Beast looks exotic with beautiful curves and colours that fall on the side of darkness. Darkness is not always bad. With chromed gun metal grey titanium coated sideplates, thumbar, matte black frame, and black spool, knobs, and handle bars, the Beast looks ravishing.

25

Page 26: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Mark Of The Beast

Look closer at the side plate where the brake control sits and you will notice three dark golden coloured lines that look like scratch marks. Well, this reels comes “scratched” and these marks were done on purpose. Whether you like it or not this is the mark of the Beast.

Page 27: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

27

Page 28: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 29: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Chunky Handle Knobs

The EVA handle knobs that comes with the Beast are chunky and ergo-nomically designed. They offer a com-fortable and confident grip which is great when fishing long hours and battling monsters of which the Beast is designed to do.

29

Page 30: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 31: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Deep Spool

The Beast is not reel for finesse fishing. It is a reel made to take on monsters and to do this well it comes with a deep spool that can take up to 130 yards of 17lb monofilament lines. Imagine that with braided lines. It takes more line than the earlier flagships such as the MGX, MGXtreme, Rocket, Premier.

31

Page 32: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 33: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Drag Strength Of The Toro WinchThe Revo Toro is another beast. Toro is Spanish for bull and the Revo Toro Winch comes with one of the most powerful drags in low profile reels. However it doesn’t look as good as the later flagship Revo reels. The Beast comes with the good looks and drag muscle of the Revo Toro Winch of which is 22lb.

Lab TestRod: Abu Garcia Vendetta

Model: VTC662MH A

Power: Medium Heavy

Line Wt.: 10-30lb

Line: Spiderwire Invisi-Braid

Poundage: 30lb

Before heading out to do some fishing with the Beast we put it through our lab test (also due to uncertain weath-er). We want to see how much drag it take and if it meets its specified 22lb. The drag remained smooth until just over 20lb and then it started deterio-rating (feeling sticky). It maxed out at almost 26lb.

35

Page 36: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 37: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Field TestWe took the Beast to Jugra (coastal town off Selangor) to pit it against the groupers that call a certain commer-cial fishing pond home.

PerformanceThe Beast is a smooth performer. Not so smooth to the point where one feels disengaged to the reel or gears, but smooth enough to know that the gears are connected somehow and they are working together.

37

Page 38: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 39: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Good Casting Ability

The Beast is an easy reel to cast with and for that you can thank its Infini™ brake system. This brake system uses a combination of both a magnetic brake system and a centrifugal brake system. The centrifugal brakes here is the old-er proven system of which I person-ally prefer.

39

Page 40: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

I was casting soft plastic of different models and of various sizes with jig-heads of various weights (mainly 1/2 oz. and 1/4 oz.), and 1/4 oz. lures in windy conditions. This wasn’t an is-sue as the Beast comes with more than enough ways to control the spool against birds nesting. I got really good distances too when the wind stopped.

Page 45: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Brute Management

The drag of the Beast is both smooth and powerful. The Beast had no qualms in showing the groupers who the boss is. It has more than enough cranking power to drag the brutes back with-out hesitation especially when there is a need to drag fish away from snags. At this pond the Beast is simply an overkill. It is like fishing in God Mode (cheat mode).

45

Page 46: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 47: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Little ConcernsWhile chromed side plates look awesome they have one disadvantage. They smudge especially when one’s hands are wet with saltwater, fish slime, grime, etc. most of which are unavoidable when one fishes. Still, looks blardy good and I will still go on buying chromed reels anyway. Oh, be care-ful with them if you use suntan lotion aka chrome killer.

An issue that I faced with the Revo Beast that I was handed is automatic disengage-ment of the free spool / thumbar during the cast. It automatically disengaged intermit-tently but often. I took it back to Pure Fish-ing and was told that it is a sample reel and they had the same issue too, and handed me another unit of which is from their in-ventory. The second unit has been problem free till now.

47

Page 48: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 49: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

ConclusionThe Abu Garcia Revo Beast is a pow-erhouse of a baitcasting reel and call-ing it the Beast certainly fits. Going out to battle monsters? Bring along the Beast.

Ihave been walking about mindless-ly ever the little Salmo Hornet Black Tiger lure blew my mind. It has been a long time since a hard plastic lure im-pressed me this much (hands extend-ed out both sides and trying to stretch as far as I can). Imagine racing a Volk-swagen Golf STi (not even GTi) in a F1 race and winning. Wouldn’t one go cuckoo?

The Black Horse

Page 59: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Black Horse

Every now and then we meet a black horse, the one that is usu-ally given a miss because we think that it can never win or in this case, not catch a fish. The Salmo Hornet Black Tiger is indeed a black horse. It comes in black with dark golden stripes, and eyes that are so 2D (two dimensional) one would wonder if it would be able to fool anything.

59

Page 60: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Well Built

Page 61: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Well Built

Taking a closer look one can see that the Salmo Hornet lure is well built. It feels solid, somewhat like it’s made of balsa wood but it is in fact made of high density aerospace foam. This perhaps attributed to the Salmo Hornet’s toughness and good balance.

61

Page 62: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Tight Swimming Vibrator

Page 63: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Ahem... are you thinking some-thing else? Back to fishing... The Salmo Hornet is a tight swimmer and as it is being retrieved it vi-brates with a well controlled vibra-tion. It turned the rod into a little massager massaging my hand as the lure was being retrieved. Reju-venate while in battle; genius.

Tight Swimming Vibrator

Mind Blown

I had some fishing tackle to test and in-vited a friend to come along. I was casting out some new baits of which I was sure the fishes would take. My friend on the other hand was casting a lure he wasn’t sure any fish would take (the Salmo Hornet) but he just wanted to give the lure a go.

He caught and landed three groupers (2 greasy groupers and a dragon grouper) within the first 10 minutes of our fishing. I had not landed anything yet. I changed baits. He landed another 4 more groupers, and I still had not caught anything (al-though I missed two fishes). He decided to go fish elsewhere.

65

Page 66: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Must Be Magic

Page 67: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

After two hours of nothingness and having tried various baits my hands began itch-ing for a fight. It was my turn to give the Salmo Hornet a go. The Salmo Hornet de-livered. On my second cast I hooked up a greasy grouper. Within the next five min-utes I landed another grouper. From than onwards I was on a roll.

67

Page 68: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

How Did it fair ?

There were 7 anglers fishing that day within a period of 3 hours. Only two anglers caught fish. The Salmo Hornet Black Tiger caught 12 fishes (all groupers). 5 other lures (three hard plastic lures and two soft baits) caught 6 more fishes (2 barramundis, 1 Giant Trevally, 1 red drum, and 2 groupers). So how did it fair? It beat proven lures (proven for that pond) 10 fish to 1.

How Tough Is The Salmo Hornet?

After seeing the inside of 12 grouper’s mouths and being bitten by 12 groupers all of which have sharp teeth, the Salmo Hor-net only suffered minor scratches and is in good condition. This Lure is indeed tough.

VerdictI am walking about in a daze with my mind blown. I have a new favourite lure, a black horse, a lure that I will never go fishing without.

Tackle Shop BluesThese days when you walk into a tackle shop to buy a fishing rod you are bombarded by the array of choices avail-able. Perhaps it would be better to look at some lures, and some reels, and some lines,... first just to clear your mind. Then you wander back to the rods section and decide to look at some accessories this time. Who knows when you will need a larger tackle box.

Before you know it you’ve filled your basket up with plenty of goodies and noticed that you’ve got a another bunch of stuffs already waiting for you at the counter. All of a sudden your budget for a new fishing rod has just dropped. You still want to buy a rod, a good rod, and also a good excuse to tell the missus.

Page 79: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

79

Page 80: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

This brings me to the new Viper Sting rod. This rod is said to contain mysti-cal powers and the dark aura of a slith-ery creature, the viper. Perhaps I have been stung. I am feeling a little woozy. This dark fishing rod in my hand bal-ances so well I believe China acrobats, world renown for their balancing acts, played a part in the designing of the Viper Sting. That balance includes good value for money.

Magic Of The Viper

81

Page 82: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 83: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Good Weight

Which weighs more, a viper or a py-thon assuming both are 6 feet in length? We anglers consider weight too when choosing a fishing rod. We want the lightest and the best for a rod at a certain price range. The Viper Sting is certainly a strong contender here. It is light weight for that price range.

83

Page 84: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 85: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Quality Components

The Viper Sting will not burn a hole in your pocket and it certainly lights a warm fuzzy in one’s head. A rod with good feel, light weight, well balanced, and also comes with good quality com-ponents the likes of high quality EVA, Fuji reel seats, and quality guides al-though not branded (can’t expect Fuji guides at this price).

We tested the Viper Sting at a commercial fishing pond in Jugra (small coastal town of Selangor Malaysia) known to harbour groupers, barramundis, red drums, and trevallies. We targeted the groupers and proceeded to fish the pond.

Casting Ability

We cast out soft plastic of different models and of various sizes with jig-heads of various weights (mainly 1/2 oz. and 1/4 oz.), and 1/4 oz. lures. The Viper Sting cast pretty well giving good distances attributed to a tip that flicked out these lures well.

89

Page 90: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

One will not be able to feel one’s heart-beat with the Viper Sting but its sensitivi-ty is pretty decent. Bumps and knocks are transmitted to the hands as I dragged the soft baits, and lures at the bottom, good enough to generate an idea of things that these lures are knocking into as well as when to strike to set the hook.

Sensitivity

Page 91: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

91

Page 92: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Have you grabbed onto the horns of a bull and dragged it across a field? Neither have I but one will need a lot of power and strength to do so. With a good back-bone giving good amounts of power, set-ting the hook is not an issue, after that the all out battle begins.

These groupers do not have the weight or strength of bulls (duh... obviously) but being able to stop them from wrapping around pipes and then dragging them out of the danger zone says a good deal about the Viper Sting’s power.

Back at our lab we put the Viper Sting through the pressure test. This is where we test to see if it does what it says it does. Well, it says line wt.: of 8-17lb so it should at least be able to take 17lb of pressure. We tight-ened the drag slowly while the pres-sure mounts. After a while the blank started to scream. It was scary but it managed to surpass 17lb without breaking.

Looks Plain

There is one thing that didn’t hit the mark and honestly this is more of a personal preference but I find the Viper Sting a bit too plain. With this I mean design wise. It is primarily black in colour, of which is okay if there are things to help it stand out. Some black rods look elegant. Some look exotic. This looks rather plain. Then again one can’t buy Toyota Corolla and expect it to look like a Ferrari.

99

Verdict

The new Viper Sting is an awesome rod for its price. It is good value for money and should the missus com-plain, at least this time you can ac-tually show her the receipt.

The Berkley River Monster fishing rods certainly look like military arsenal. They come in green (pearl green perhaps) coloured blank that changes co-lour depending on the reflection of lights, and camouflage EVA + a tad of black EVA at the end. Should there be a fishing squadron in the military, this would very well be what they will be carrying.

Ever heard of the saying, “fight fire with fire?” Well this here is fight monster with monster. Berkley River Monster rod is indeed a rod made to battle monsters. Picking up the rod alone gives you an idea of what the River Monster can do. Flex the rod and you will feel its powers.

Assault Fishing Rod

The River Monster is no pistol. I would class it along the lines of the M16 and AK47 aka assault rifles and in this case; fishing rod. It is not a light weight rod. Not heavy either. Somewhat like the M4 Carbine of which is derived from the M16 but lighter.

The River Monster rod is made to drag monsters out of cover and to beat them into submission. At least that is how the Medium Heavy powered rod that we tested per-form.

The River Monster comes with high quality EVA handles that are ergo-nomically designed to sit comfortable in one’s hands. It comes with K-guides (non Fuji) that provides for tangle free fishing of which is great especially when one is battling monsters.

Page 113: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Rubber Works BestThe River Monster comes with a rub-ber piece at the end of its rear EVA handle. This makes a lot of sense espe-cially since this rod is made for river fishing of which also include jungle fishing, having a rubber piece for it to stand on keeps it safe from the en-vironment as well as soaking up dirt (should the area be EVA or cork). Rub-ber piece also stops the rod from slid-ing.

Back at our lab we tortured the River Monster to see how much pressure it can handle. It is said that it can take up to 30lb (14-30lb) so secured the River Monster, put on our safety gear, took out our torture kit, and do what we had to. We easily managed up to 24lb and there after it resisted torture. However, we re-lentlessly got it to touch just over 30lb.

The River Monster rod that we had is made to cast out heavier lures (3/8 - 1 1/4 oz). We were casting an 18g Abu Is-land II spoon for this test and the dis-tance gained is quite good. Casting a 1/4oz. lure still gave us acceptable dis-tances although it is below the rod’s lure weight rating.

* The line plays a role too and it will fare better with braided line of the same poundage (smaller diameter).

Mind Blown

The groupers that had to battle the River Monster... wait a minute... there was no real battle. The groupers were dragged to the side splashing, leaping, and screaming for help. The River Monster needed a much more powerful opponent, one worthy of its powers. None of the groupers could do it.

Rod Ford Halfmoon By Philemon Foo

If you believe in werewolves and vampires, this rod is certainly for you. You know that you will never ever en-counter any of these minions during a halfmoon. Jokes aside, the Rod Ford Halfmoon looks sleek and expensive. If I were to buy a Mercedes Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series, this will be one of my colour choices.

127

Page 128: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 129: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Elegent Sporty Design

The Halfmoon comes in a mixture of piano black (ebony perhaps), and a lighter shade of black with some 3D kind of a design. It looks really good. It goes well too with the split EVA section divided by a yellowish black carbon fibre wrap. There are also gun metal silver rings that adds to the aestethics. The Fuji ACM (CSS for spinning models) reel seat completes the package.

129

Page 130: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 131: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

As with most sports cars, weight and balance plays a role in its performance. The sporty Halfmoon is a lightweight rod especially when compared to rods around its price range, and it is very well balanced achieving almost a 50:50 weight ratio with reel on.

24Ton Graphite

Page 133: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Halfmoon comes with a 24TON graphite blank that is enhanced with a carbon veil or wrap. This gives it the sexy 3D effect but more important is the added toughness that the carbon veil provides. There’s more... the handle section is wrapped with Kevlar for added stiffness.

Note: There’s a lot of confusion with it comes to graphite blank ton-nage. To understand better check out the January 2014 issue or click the link below.

When it comes to components the Halfmoon with high quality EVA handles that are ergo-nomically designed that fits nicely in my hands. It comes with Fuji reel seat of which is already well known for its quality. As for the guides they are SiC guides but not by Fuji. They may not be as famous as Fuji but they are reliable and cost less.

Before taking it out for field testing we wanted to know if it will do what it says it can do. The rod that I have with me is rated 6-12lb. We put it through the pressure test with a target of touching 12lb. It took a lot of effort and courage as the rod felt like it was going to burst but still we managed to get it to 12.4lb without incident.

When it comes to casting, the Half-moon does it well. It has a moderate tip that helps cast out lures really well. Lures of various weights were used in this test ranging from 1/4 oz. to 1/2 oz. Having such a tip also allows for vari-ous methods of casting with ease.

Casting Ability

139

When it comes to fish management, setting the hook will take a little more effort due to its shorter backbone but once the hook is set, the fun begins. It does a decent job with controlling the groupers while not being over em-powering. The blank bends to section and sort of holds the position giving you rigidity to pump up the fish or to turn the fish... simply loads of fun.

When it comes to sensitivity the Half-moon seems to transmit vibrations at a lesser level. It could be perhaps due to the extra Kevlar wrap at the handle, I am not sure. Not to say that I totally did not feel anything. I did but just not as much.

Lower Sensitivty

145

Sharp Jigging Hooks

When it comes to our sport we take seriously the tools that we use. Hooks being one of them is the di-rect link between us and the fish. Thus we need to ensure that our hooks are sharp and strong. Recently we were given a pack of Sharp Jigging Hooks to test.

Sharp Jigging Hooks

149

Page 150: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 151: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The Sharp Jigging Hooks are both sharp and tough. We tested a few of them with our “spoon test” and most of them (7 out of 9) latched on easily while the other 2 of which are sharp but just not as sharp.

Sharpness Test

151

Page 152: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 153: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Being made for jigging and since most jigging is done in saltwater we wanted to see how the Sharp Jigging Hooks will fair having spent 24 hours in salt-water. To do so we drowned a Sharp Jigging Hook in saltwater at 8.17pm on the 1st of February for a little over 24hours. At 10.41pm 2nd February we removed the hook for inspection.

Saltwater Test

153

Page 154: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 155: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

It faired really well with no visible signs of rust. However, being a high carbon hook, this saltwater tortured hook lost its sharpness a little as expected. It was again tested on the spoon and this time it didn’t latch on. However, feeling the point with my finger it still felt sharp.

Pressure Test

Page 157: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

157

Page 158: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Another test that we just had to do is the pressure test to see how much pressure these hooks can handle. Forc-ing them open we average a reading of about 36lb (above our scale’s marking) of which is about 16kg. More than enough to handle most catches.

Page 159: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

159

Page 160: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 161: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

When it comes to our tools we cer-tainly must ensure that they are good and when it comes to hooks the Sharp Jigging Hooks are worth considering.

Note: We did not get to field test them. Perhaps in the future.

Many a times we buy pliers for our fishing but they do not come with a pouch or a holder. Most of the time these pliers end up sitting inside our tackle boxes. One problem with that is that the pliers may damage items that are in the tackle box.

The VFOX Pliers Pouch VC-306 comes with two slots. The bigger one could be used to hold a set of long nose pli-ers while the smaller slot up front can be used to store smaller item such as a scis-sors for cutting lines. All these are held in place by a Velcro strap

Of the reel’s seven sealed stainless steel ball bearings, five are positioned in the spool and two in the reel handle. Because the dual-drag design reduces side load, these bearings consequently receive less side pressure, allowing them to perform smoother and last longer. Once you’ve leaned on a big bruiser with our Platinum TwinDrag™ you won’t want to fish with any other reel.

Fishing With Spoons, The Basics: Part 2

Fishing With Spoons, The Basics: Part 2

Spoons, one of my favourite lures not only for fishing but for humour as well. I like the look of confusion or bewilder-ment when I tell non-anglers that the fish was caught using a spoon. “Hmm, makes sense. Like us, fish use spoons to eat too right?” I think is the funniest re-sponse I’ve gotten.

Last issue we discussed spoons in gen-eral, types of spoons, and why fish take them. In this article we’ll take a step further discussing choosing spoons for your fishing trips in general.

By Philemon Foo

289

Page 290: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 291: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Trip ExpectationsAs anglers we normally have an idea of what to ex-pect on most of our planned fishing trips. I don’t mean whether fish would be caught or not. What meant real-ly is the basic information with regards to the place(s) we will be fishing during the planned trip.

Information such as:

a. Targeted fish species.

b. Water type as in saltwater or freshwater.

c. Water conditions such as clear, murky, tannin, etc.

d. Temperature of water (rain = cool or sunny = warm)

e. Type of fishing such as casting or trolling.

291

Page 292: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 293: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

C ho osing Spoons

It is easy to choose what spoons to take for places that we are familiar with. Of course some things are not in our con-trol such a weather or environmental factors, etc. and it is wise to prepare for them too. For places we’ve not been to before, like a detective we will have to create a picture with the information (or intelligence) gathered.

293

Page 294: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 295: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Spoon Colours

Spoons come in many colours for a vari-ety of factors such as those stated earlier. Most anglers will have a few favourite or must have colours for a certain fishing hole and fish type. These are colours that have been proven to work all the time at that particular lake or river, etc. for vari-ous fish species.

295

Page 296: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 297: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Let us take for example Temenggor Lake (in the state of Perak, Malaysia) target-ing sebaraus (Hampala macrolepidota). One of my favourite must have colours for this fish species and lake will be or-ange with silver or copper.

297

Page 298: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 299: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Water Conditions And ColourWater conditions play a part too in de-termining spoon colour choices. This has got to do with the amount of light penetrating the water. Clear water will have more light penetration (goes deep-er) as compared to tannin or stained wa-ter. Murky water on the other hand will have the least.

As a general colour choice; brighter co-lours such as red, yellow, orange, and white do well in clearer waters where penetration of light is the highest. Of course natural colours (look like real fish) work best in clear waters.

299

Page 300: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 301: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Darker colours and also those with lumi-nous colours that glow in the dark work well in deeper waters where light pen-etration is very low. These are amongst the last colours t disappear the deeper the lure goes or spoon goes.

When it comes to silver and gold co-loured spoons, this will depend very much on the fish species. Some fish spe-cies are attracted by bright flashes. Some actually get spooked and go into hiding. Silver and gold gives out high levels of flash. In general they work well in clear and slightly stained waters.

301

Page 302: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 303: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

As for stained or murkier waters. The opposite happens. Colours like green, purple, blue, maroon, black, etc. tend to disappear first with brighter colours dis-appearing deeper. However, if the wa-ter is really murky bright coloured lures or spoons will look more shadows the deeper they go while the darker colours blend into the darkness.

303

Page 304: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 305: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Spoon Sizes When it comes to sizes there is no hard and fast rule. The norm is to match the spoon size with the targeted fish species (or average fish sizes). Exam-ple would be larger spoons for giant snakeheads (toman), mackerels, etc., and smaller spoons for smaller fishes such as tarpons (Indo-Pacific tar-pon), permits, etc.

This is not to say that larger fish will not take small spoons and small fishes do not take larger spoons.

Things to take note are:-

a. The larger the spoon, the more flash it emits.

b. The larger the spoon the better it is seen.

c. The larger the spoon, the higher the resistance underwater.

305

Page 306: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 307: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

All these can play both ways. They will either help you catch more fish or scare away the fish depending on the circum-stances. On a bright sun shiny day, a large flashy spoon may spook fishes. A larger spoon will be more visible in murky wa-ters but in clear waters it too may spook fishes.

So generally, in clear waters I would go with a larger spoon at dusk and dawn where the level of lights is low. When the sun climbs higher and there is more light I will scale down to smaller spoons only if the fishes stop biting. Again this depends on the targeted fish species.

307

Page 308: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 309: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

SpoonTypesThe type of spoons to bring will depend on the type of fishing you will be doing. If you will be doing only casting then almost all spoon types are okay. Add weedless spoons if you will be fishing around weedy areas. Use spoons that swim right at the bottom for bottom feeders like marble goby, and groupers.

Should you be doing some trolling, you will want to bring along some slimmer spoons that are ideal for trolling. This is not to say that usual spoons used for cast-ing cannot be trolled. They can and they do, but still I will recommend bringing spoons that are designed for trolling.

Try Them Out

So what spoons should you choose? De-pending on the factors and circumstanc-es mentioned earlier choose spoons that will match and cover these circumstanc-es. Try out what you’ve learnt here on your next fishing trip and who knows, you could be smiling next to a whopper.

Fishing With Colours Knowledge Wise

Page 313: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Fishing With ColoursBy Philemon Foo

Ever wondered why on earth are there so many different coloured lures out there in the market? Do all these colours really make any dif-ference? Do fishes actually see co-lours or are all these colours paint-ed or printed or sprayed onto lures merely to attract us anglers?

313

Page 314: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 315: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

It Is A Colourful World

Lures come in a large variety of colours because we all like colours and we all like choices. Isn’t it more exciting to walk into a tackle shop and see a whole range of colourful lures on a wall as op-posed to see only, say white coloured lures on the same wall? So yes, colours are there to attract us. If we are not at-tracted, lures would not be purchased and certainly not be used.

315

Page 316: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 317: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Do Fish See Colours?Go ask any fish and it’ll tell you that they too can see colours. Should you do that, don’t talk to fishes in front of friends who do not fish. You will look rather weird. Seriously, they do see co-lours or at least most of them do. There are fish species (not many) that cannot see colours.

If our targeted fishes cannot see colours then how does one explain why two lures of the same design, model, brand, weight, look, but in dif-ferent colours fair so differently with one catch-ing all the fish and the other catching nothing? They do see colours.

The eye of a fish is quite similar to that of us humans in a sense that they too have cells called cones that can see colour. Both humans and fishes have retinas in our eyes. Within the retina are photosensitive cells called cones and rods that converts light into signals (somewhat like an old film camera) and sends it to the brains. While cones see well during the day and in co-lour, rods helps us see at night.

Colours Underwater One thing about water is that it absorbs light. This simply means that the deeper one goes the darker things get as light decreases with depth and with that too colours get distorted and then vanishes. In sci-entific terms, water absorbs different wavelengths of light. Red, orange, and yellow gets absorbed first which means that they are the first colours to disap-pear the deeper we go with red being the first to go. This is followed by darker colours such as green, blue, etc.

Question: What happens when you use red coloured lure (metal jig) and fish it really deep in clear waters?

Answer: The red colour disappears and the lure will look either black to the fishes down there or they do not see your lure. Vibration will then be of help.

321

Page 322: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 323: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Water Conditions And Colour

Red is the first colour to disappear in deep water, one of the reasons why deep sea anglers like red coloured lines (well at least I do). This however is not the case with murkier or turbid waters. Dark colours such as blue, followed by green disappears first with red be-ing visible deeper underwater thus a red lure will be a better choice in such waters.

323

Page 324: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 325: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Climate Conditions And Colours

The sky has an effect on colours too. On a bright sun-ny day light penetrates deeper as there is more light but as clouds block out the sun’s rays or as the sun sets, the penetration of light becomes lower. This goes to say that the colour of your lures will be effected by weather.

When there is not enough light say like on a cloudy day or at dusk and dawn, bright colours are first to fade beginning with red. As it gets dark fish can no longer distinguish colours. This is where light co-loured lures like bright silver, white, and luminous colours come into play.

325

Page 326: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 327: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Choosing Lures Based On Colours

If you are fishing top water or the upper column of any lake, river, pond, or sea where the water is clear or with a little tint, bright coloured lures with will gener-ally be a good choice or course natural coloured lures that look like real fish would the best choice.

If you are fishing deep like with deep divers in the same said water conditions, the lure colours to go with will be those with darker colours. But if the wa-ter is murky or turbid, consider doing the opposite. When there is no sun or in low light conditions go with bright shiny, white, and/or luminous colours.

Piece Them Together

Now you know that lures come in many colours to capture both the minds of an-glers and the eyes of the fish. Spare some thought to the colours of your lures the next time you go fishing. Put all the pieces learnt here together when you choose what lures to use on your next trip.

* Note that this article is based on general scenarios. There are also certain colours that work better in certain lakes and expe-rience wins most of the time.

Penn No. 155

Page 331: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

By Philemon Foo

Penn No. 155

Penn has been making fishing tackle beginning with reels since 1932. Today when we talk about big game saltwater fishing, Penn comes to mind. Having been around for so long they certainly have lots of vintage reels. This here is the Penn No. 155 of which it its day was known as “the light tackle surf reel.”

Product Of The 40s

Hunting for information I stum-bled across a collection of some very old Penn Catalogues. The Penn No. 155 reel goes back as far as 1940 (didn’t see it in the 1939 and 1938 catalogues). The catalogue describes the 155 as a small light-weight reel especially designed for light tackle fishing. Looking at the reel, small fishes those days must be averaging 10kg.

333

Outlook

Page 335: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Outlook

The 155 comes with black side plates and spool, and silver frame, star drag, spool control, reel foot, eccentric lever (lever that engages and disengages the spool), and handle. It comes with a cream co-loured marbleized torpedo handle knob.

On the front end plate (side plate) sits an embossed early days Penn logo with the model number No. 155 above the Made in USA claim. On the other end plate or back end plate sits the spool control knob and line out alarm.

Back In Its Day

Page 337: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Back In Its Day

Back in the 1940s Penn called the 155 a “light tackle casting reel” and that changed in the 1950s, presumable mid 50s where it was then called the Beachmaster reel of which is part of the Beachmaster series of which consisted the 155 (largest size), 160, and 165 mod-els. There could be a 156 but no one seems to be able to confirm.

It was one of the popular beach casting reels during its hay day as it was small (considered small those days), light weight, with stream-lined side plates. It also cast well as it comes with a light spool made of reinforced plastic. One issue with the plastic spools is that they tend to break. There are models that comes with metal spools (155M, 160M, 165M).

To Conclude

Being one of the earlier beach cast-ing reels the Penn No. 155 may not be the most famous amongst the Penn range of reels, but it surely deserves a mention. It certainly looks good too, in a showcase.

Get Your Kids FishingAn Initiative By The Asian Angler Magazine

Fishing is a very healthy sport. As anglers we enjoy fresh air, we experience nature, we improve our analytical skills, we absorb vitamins from the sun, we expend our minds, we learn about the environment, etc.

There are so many benefits to fishing and we should reduce our kids addiction to video games, computer games, playing with mobile devices, etc. We should get them to interact more with our environment and teach them a thing or two about life and living life.

With this in mind we hope to encourage you to take your kid(s) fishing and have dedicated a sec-tion of our magazine to Junior Anglers.

Weekend Heroes

Weekend Heroes

School has started , and my fishing activities are now limited to the weekends. Anyway,I’m glad to say I started this year with some good catches.

355

Page 356: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 357: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

A decent Striped Snakehead at 36cm caught on the Rapala Skitterpop 7 Firetiger. Good start. I cast the popper towards some commotion and started my retrieve by slowly twitch-ing it beside a grassy area, and sure enough it was hit. There’s something about the colour ‘Firetiger’ that catches my eye, and it even catches fish.

357

Page 358: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 359: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The next day,I decided to try a swamp I found last year, while trek-king a stream in search of Hampala Barbs. The stream has a small popu-lation of juvenile fishes such as juve-nile Hampala Barbs.

359

Page 360: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 361: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

This is the swamp. I did not fish it last year because I did not think that fish could live in such an iso-lated place. I was wrong. Time to be a bit more open minded. Watching a fishing VCD from a fishing maga-zine I bought recently reminded me of the spot, so the next day after hooking the Striped Snakehead on the Rapala Skitterpop, I had to try this spot.

361

Page 362: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 363: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

I fished with my friend and younger brother. They were using topwater frog imitation baits. My younger brother had the first hit on an opening of the heavy cover of the swamp. The frog came fly-ing back, so I made a cast with my trusty Berkley Powerbait Kasumi Craw. I was also on the phone, telling my dad I would be there for a while trying to get the culprit that hit my younger brother’s frog.

363

Page 364: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 365: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

With the phone in my left hand and my trusty Kasumi Craw in the water, I did not expect anything. As the craw slowly sank down, I felt a thump. I waited for a few seconds and set the hook with my right hand, and fought the fish with my right hand. Finally, I caught my first Forest Snakehead, a dream species I did not think I could catch.

Here is my friend, Idlan trying to hook his first Peacock Bass. He’s getting better with a baitcaster now. He has scored some really good fish since December.

Some Hedgehog Studio bearings I received from the good people at Lightspeed Lures. They have been reading my articles and I am thankful for that. These bearings are currently resting on my book shelf because I don’t have the right equipment for chang-ing bearings.

Heavy cover Striped Snakehead on the Rod Ford Creations rubber frog. My first fish on a rubber froggy, after a few months of failing. My silver-max’s original bearings are already good for long casts and I cannot imagine how the Hedge-hog Studio bearings would perform.

371

Page 372: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 373: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Not sure how this happened, maybe a dolphin dive? I missed a larger Striped Snakehead be-fore this, I did not notice the take in the heavy cover. The next thing I knew was my frog was flying and the fish was also fly-ing, maybe it was hooked a little bit.

373

Being small and light does have an advantage in the flooded grasslands. My two buddies here are not so lucky.

375

Page 376: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 377: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Starting to turn into a frog head now. Lost the green froggy the next day after losing a few fish. Currently working on sharpening my rubber frog skills. I have been successful with spinnerbaits, crankbaits, pop-per and other baits .I’m doing this to prepare myself for any situation as different fish in different locations require different ways of presentation.

Juvenile Giant Snakehead on the Berkley Havoc 4” Pitboss in Scupper-nong rigged on a 4/O Weightless EWG Hook. I rigged the Pitboss and fished it like a buzzbait. Hooked this Juve-nile Giant Snakehead on the first cast. My mission to catch a Giant Snake-head for 6 years is finally completed.

379

A few months ago I released some Juvenile Giant Snakeheads into the pond I regularly fish a.k.a the ‘Ste-roid Pond’. There’s a few reasons for the name. Here is Idlan, feeling a bit disappointed to lose his first Giant Snakehead right before he could lift it up. I will continue to release more juvenile Giant Snakeheads, as the cur-rent ones don’t seem to be thriving.

381

First fish of the year for Idlan, on his Firetiger Seahawk popper. It was hooked on his first cast! I know there is some-thing good about the colour ‘Firetiger’.

383

Page 384: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 385: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

On the first cast after releasing the fish above, Idlan hooked a larger specimen at 39cm.It was caught at the same spot,a drop off with some good ambush points. Bait-fish were congregating around that area and Idlan hit the jackpot.

385

Page 386: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 387: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

My younger brother made a swift cast towards the drop off, and another fish was hooked. The commotion around the area indicated that there were a few snakeheads feasting on the baitfish. Look at the colour of the DUO Realis Crank 48SR,similar to Firetiger.

387

Page 388: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 389: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

Be careful when handling fish. I man-aged to unhook the fish quickly to avoid any further damage. My younger broth-er had to be taken to the hospital to en-sure the wound didn’t get infected.

389

I ended the session with a juvenile on this Eupro minnow I borrowed from Idlan. Notice anything odd? This little haruan was very aggressive and gave a good fight despite its size.

391

Page 392: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English
Page 393: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

After hitting my popper a few times, I switched to this minnow and it was hooked. I had to take it home to unhook it, and released it at dusk. Strong glue fixed the lure.

393

Page 394: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The next morning I caught this Striped Snakehead on the Rapala Skitterpop 7 in chrome. This popper is a present I received from a friend in Brunei last year for my birthday. I used a few lures and did not have any success with the snakeheads hanging in a grassy area. I switched to the Skitterpop and had a fish trail behind it, finally slamming it in open water.

395

Idlan fighting a good fish on his trusty Se-ahawk Big Strike Firetiger Popper. I think the high visibility colours and the intense shades of the colour make it easier for predator’s to spot it. ’Firetiger’ is one of my favourite and best performing co-lours.

397

Finally landed. Some of my other friends have been ‘poisoned’ by the weekend’s topwater action, and there is only one similar popper left in JIMS Pro Tackle, our regular shopping place.

399

The end of a weekend. I broke my rod tip in an accident while transporting it. It is now a 6 foot rod, as I put a guide on the broken end. It should be enough for the upcoming holidays and until I can get a replacement top piece.

401

As usual, catch and release. All the fish in this article were released back to where they belong. I am planning to debarb my hooks and catch and release every sport-fish I can hook.

Tight lines & Happy fishing.

ROD FORD SINISTER EBEK SPECIAL

Rod Ford first ever collaboration with Azahar MJ, a fishing guide and boat captain of Pekan, Pahang. Greatly known for his prowess in hunting the Ebeks with metal jigs and wild mackerel chase, Rod Ford built coastal class saltwater jigging rods to Azahar’s own specification preference.

Each of the Sinister Ebek Special models come in dual handles. The extended with split rear end for jigging and a shorter full EVA handle for lure casting in estuaries, bay, coastal lines or around islands.

The perfection is in which each model is equally well balance with both handles.

Page 412: The Asian Angler - February 2015 Digital Issue - Malaysia - English

The 7’3” model is made to execute long fall technique with fluttering metal jigs on a spin outfit. Though contradictory to what the native Japanese suggest to using a multiplier reel for this option; our local shallow waters of South China Sea allows the different setup combi-nation.

Constructed from 24TON + 30TON Carbon and equipped with stan-dard K SiC guides and Fuji ACM/VSS reel seats.

Comes in two section models with butt joint and dual handles.

ROD FORD HALFMOON ULTIMATE

A revival of a hit from 2010, the Halfmoon was a favorite among snakehead lure anglers then for its moderate action which cleverly impart better swimming action to deep diving minnows and a tough blank you can push to its limit during a do or die tussle.

Rod Ford designs the new Halfmoon with Carbon Veil concept; layer-ing the outer blank with additional carbon scrim to increase strength and toughness. This is visually evident with the wavy carbon pat-terns throughout the blank’s surface. A concept adopted by the older model too; difference lies in the finer finishing on the latter. Handle section is further wrapped with Aramid (Kevlar) for stiffness and cool factor.
